1974 Clos du Bois "Proprietor's Reserve" Dry Creek Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1974 Clos du Bois "Proprietor's Reserve" Dry Creek Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. John Gilman: " The bouquet is good, but not great, offering up scents of cassis, cigar ash, dark soil tones and a bit of chipotle pepper in the upper register. On the palate the wine is still full-bodied and tangy, with a bit more complexity in the mouth than the rather straightforward nose suggests, with melted tannins, tangy acids and a long, nicely focused finish. One of my chief complaints with this wine is that the tartaric acids are not that well blended into the wine and are now sticking out just a bit on the backend. It is certainly quite potable and has plenty of life ahead of it, but despite it offering up good, solid quality, it is not exciting. The winery had clearly moved up a notch in precision and complexity by the time the next great vintage rolled around in 1978. (Drink between 2017-2030)" (10/2017)

1974 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1974 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (93VN, 92JG). Vinous: "Medium red. Sexy ripe aromas of plum, prune and dates are accented by cedar, eucalyptus and caraway seed. At once penetrating and suave on the palate, conveying a fine-grained texture and terrific energy for a 42-year-old Cabernet. Finishes with perfectly integrated, ripe tannins and lovely length and verve. Very sexy juice with considerable class. It strikes me that a bottle of this wine could not possibly cause a hangover. 1974 Clos du Val Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum of 1974 Clos du Val Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L) (90JG). John Gilman: "The fruit for this bottling came from vineyards in the Stag’s Leap district and was first released by the winery in October of 1976 for $7.50 per bottle. This was only the third vintage for Bernard Portet at Clos du Val, as the inaugural vintage here was the 1972, so this was still very early days in the history of this estate. At our tasting, the 1974 Clos du Val was not as suave and refined in profile as the superb 1978 bottlings I wrote about a few months back, with a slight coarseness to the tannins on the backend that have reportedly been part of the profile of this wine since it was released, and which remain to this day. The winemaking is just not as fine-tuned here in ’74 as would be the case a few years later, and one has to assume Monsieur Portet was still feeling his way with fruit from the Stag’s Leap district, after having been born and raised in Bordeaux. That said, this is

1974 Silver Oak North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this bottle of 1974 Silver Oak North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This was a strong showing for a wine that was drinkable on the day it was released. It reveals plenty of ripe, jammy, curranty fruit aromas intertwined with scents of melted road tar, herbs, and toast. There is fine fruit, glycerin, and richness, as well as a spicy, alcoholic finish in this fleshy, corpulent wine. At twenty years of age it reveals the Silver Oak style and confirms that these wines, even though delicious young, can age more gracefully than some wine critics (myself included) have suggested. 1974 Charles Krug "Vintage Selection Lot F1" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1974 Charles Krug "Vintage Selection Lot F1" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (92JG). John Gilman: "The Lot F-1 'Vintage Select' is the last Krug wine made from Fay Vineyard fruit by the winery, and may well be the last of the great Charles Krug cabernet sauvignons that had ranked right up at the very pinnacle of California cabernet during the decades of the 1940s and 1950s. The 1974 Lot F-1 has been fully mature for many years but remains in full bloom on both the nose and palate, as it offers up a superb bouquet of dark berries, chipotle peppers, woodsmoke, herb tones, lovely soil nuances, tobacco, a touch of nutskin and a fantastic spice box of Indian spices in the upper register that just become more and more complex and vibrant with extended aeration. On the palate the wine is fullish, complex and velvety, with very little remaining tannins, but such fine balance that it will have no difficulty continuing to drink at a very high level for at least anothe
