1971 Palmer, Margaux

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1971 Palmer is a wine that I had enjoyed on several occasions and it remains one of the unheralded surprise packages on the Left Bank. This bottle reinforced that view so I will repeat my acclaim from my previous encounters...what an outstanding Margaux! Even after 45 years there is impressive fruit concentration on the nose, this example perhaps less Pauillac-like than the one in 2012, more rounded and generous with black fruit, sous-bois, bay leaf and thyme emerging from the glass. 1971 Brane-Cantenac, Margaux
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1971 Brane-Cantenac, Margaux. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Opened at home on my 40th birthday and shared between two…what a lovely Margaux! A touch of dustiness soon dissipates on the nose, opening up nicely to reveal a slightly rustic yet fresh bouquet of blackberry, cedar, graphite and smoke all well defined and remaining intense from start to finish. The palate is medium-bodied, certainly not a powerful Brane-Cantenac and the tannins are slightly coarse. Yet there is ample freshness and focus here, just sufficient dark berry fruit though now overcome with secondary flavours such as sandalwood and leather. Not a profound wine, but no regrets opening this such a special day. Drink now. Tasted February 2011. (NM)" (05/2011)

1971 Grimaldi Barolo
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1971 Grimaldi Barolo. Nearly 50 years on, 1971 is now viewed by most cognoscenti as the vintage of the decade in the 1970s for Barolo and Barbaresco. A frigid winter lasted well into April, while hail in May and June left a dramatically reduced crop size. However, a perfectly clear growing season through the summer gave way to a warm, dry October in which harvest took place under ideal conditions. With impeccable sugar levels, tannins, and acidity, the wines have withstood the test of time. The Grimaldi estate is one of 20th century Barolo's great success stories. According to Jancis Robinson, 1971 was a "classic vintage. Rare but worth seeking out the big names." Begun by Ernesto Grimaldi in 1930, the Grimaldi estate now bears the name of his son, Giacomo, to whom Ernesto passed the reins in the mid-1980s. Ernesto's grandson, Ferrucio, has been making the wines since 1996. This 1971 vintage is a stunning example of the maestro Grimaldi at the pinnacle of hi
