Bid on this bottle of 1970 Gaja Barbaresco. This Barbaresco is from the region's earlier beginnings as a serious red wine appellation. For the most part, Barbaresco was pretty much living in near total obscurity until the 1960s, when Giovanni Gaja (Angelo's father) began proving what could come of these vineyards. In the '70s, his son Angelo introduced single-vineyard offerings, and the rest is Italian wine history!

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1970 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo. Marchesi di Barolo (which used to be known as Opera Pia Barolo) is one of the region's most historic wineries. Marchesi Falletti was a former proprietor of the estate in the early 1800s and is widely considered to be the creator of what is now known as Barolo. The wines made here were and continue to be Nebbiolos of great breed and complexity. Monica Larner of The Wine Advocate writes: "Centrally located in Barolo village, Marchesi di Barolo is a reliable producer of consistent, traditional red wines."

Bid on this bottle of 1970 Louis Martini "Special Selection" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The story of Louis Martini is a key chapter in Napa's winemaking history. Genovese immigrant Louis Martini established his first business in 1922, smack in the middle of Prohibition (in force in the US from 1919 until 1933). He was therefore limited to making "sacramental and medicinal" wines at first. With the end of prohibition, Martini became one the first winemakers in California to produce vintage varietal table wines in quantity, and at reasonable prices. Sourced from prime vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, including Monte Rosso in the mountains above Sonoma Valley and La Loma in the cool Carneros district south of Napa, and made with care and expertise, Louis Martini wines have aged exceptionally well. With their hallmark of impeccable balance, older Louis Martini Cabs are known to age extremely well.

The nose offers up a complex blend of saddle leather, black fruit (that became more raspberry-like as it got air), singed cigar tobacco, black truffles, earth and gamey tones. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, complex and resolved, with a certain sturdy rusticity to it that has been typical of the ’70 La Mission since day one, but with excellent focus and depth, a sweet core of black fruit, and fine length on the finish.
