1970 Bodegas Bilbainas "Viña Zaco" Gran Reserva Rioja (base neck fills) (Previously $150)

Founded in 1859 by a group of Bordelais to export to the wine-starved French market after phylloxera had ravaged its vineyards. Its original name was Savignon Frères & Cie, but was changed to Bilbaínas after being purchased by a group of Bilbao businessmen. The Spanish royal family, Winston Churchill, and Salvador Dalí were among the wine's ardent admirers. The wines represent classic Rioja in both history and character. They are based in Haro, as are other iconic bodegas such as Muga, La Rioja Alta, Cune, Lopez de Heredia.

1970 Fonseca Vintage Port (3.5cm fill)

96 points Wine Spectator: "Some people may enjoy this wine's rather fat, rich and powerful fruit now, but I still find it too young for drinking. Deeply colored, with smoky mint, tar and fruit aromas, full-bodied, with concentrated fruit flavors and plenty of tannins. (JS, Web only-1989)" 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Vintners Company’s 650th anniversary celebration at Vintners Hall, the Fonseca 1970 was the finest bottle I have encountered. 1970 Graham's Vintage Port

94 points John Gilman: "I drank quite a bit of the 1970 Graham’s over the course of the 1990s, but had not crossed paths with a bottle in several years until this most recent example. The wine is superb in 1970, as it displays a bouquet of voluptuous complexity, offering up scents of black cherry, plum, cedar, fresh mint, chocolate, a bit of tobacco leaf, and lovely, estery floral topnotes. On the palate the wine is focused and opulent, with fine framing acidity adding a note of precision to the attack, and with excellent freshness and balance on the sof ...Read More »

1970 Phélan Ségur, St-Estephe (Very High Shoulder Fill)

One of a few notable Bordeaux chateaux established by an Irish immigrant, Chateau Phelan-Segur was formed in the early 1800s by wine merchant Bernard O’Phelan of Tipperary. The estate grew to be one of the largest in St-Estèphe before being sold in 1883 to the Delon family that held it until 1984. The estate's proximity to the estuary of the Gironde and soils of alluvial gravel over sandy clay have produced several vintages of exceptional wines.

1970 Taylor Vintage Port (Morgan Furze & Co)

99 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine's dark garnet color with minimal bricking suggests a relatively youthful wine and this certainly could age longer, although it's also delicious now. Wonderfully complex floral and herbal scents easily move into deep, rich flavors of chocolate and cherries, sprinkled with a healthy dose of Douro minerality and spice. Drink or hold. (JC)" (02/2007) 98 points Wine Spectator: "Clearly lives up to Taylor's superb reputation. 1970 Taylor Vintage Port (cracked capsules)

Now fully mature and sublime, the 1970 Taylor is a lovely port to drink now. 98 points Wine Spectator: "Clearly lives up to Taylor's superb reputation. Deep ruby, with intense violet and chocolate aromas, full-bodied, with gorgeous fruit flavors, full but well-integrated tannins and an extremely long finish. Amazing balance and finesse." (1989) 96 points Robert Parker: "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time ...Read More »

1970 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien (1.5L)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine has been fully mature and delicious for many years, so I was not surprised by how stunning this bottle was. It has always been an outstanding wine for the vintage - complex, rich, savory, and the quintessentially elegant Bordeaux. This beauty continues to reveal the fragrance and finesse that one expects from Lafite-Rothschild but so rarely finds. A fragrant, complex bouquet of cedar, herbs, vanillin, fruitcake, and coffee is followed by a soft, gentle, graciously-constructed wine with sweet layers of f ...Read More »

*** From Michael Broadbent: "Surprisingly pale, sweet, spearmint nose, medium sweetness and body, nice rich flavour, good acidity." 1970 Cheval Blanc, St-Emilion

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at Cheval Blanc dinner at The Ledbury. This has always been a great 1970 Saint Emilion. It has a noticeable deep hue. The nose is unashamedly rustic with mulberry, crushed flowers, wild heather and a touch of chlorophyll. Great definition and vibrancy: a wine wallowing in its secondary aromas. The palate has fine definition and demonstrated much more backbone than the Cheval ’78 tasted alongside. Here, the Merlot is undaunted by the Cabernet Franc and lends it a beguiling fleshiness, especially towards the ...Read More »

1970 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien Top Pick!
1970 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien

94 points John Gilman: "I have been a big fan of the 1970 Ducru-Beaucaillou, but in the past I have always found it just a half step behind the superb 1966. However, the most recent tasting seemed to indicate that the wine is showing more structural integrity and greater depth than it did for the last decade and a half, and it may well be that the wine has simply remained a bit young and I have been underestimating it in the past. This most recent bottle offers up a stunning and still youthful nose of cassis, black cherries, a touch of red currant, cigar ...Read More »

1970 Cockburn Vintage Port

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Ruby color, with just a hint of brick at the rim. Mouthfilling red berries and plums, finishing with chocolate and peppery spice. Overall, it’s a bit austere, but pretty, and capable of another decade or two of further aging. Drink or hold. (JC)" (03/2004) Jancis Robinson: "Very dark ruby. (Darker than 1977.) A burnt, rather simple quality to this nose. Not much subtlety. Thick on the palate with very marked sweetness. Hot finish. Thick, sweet and almost New World! 175./20 points. (JR)" (09/2012)

1970 Bodegas Bilbainas "Viña Pomal" Reserva Rioja (3cm fill)

Undoubtedly an underrated, traditional Rioja, Viña Pomal is a bottling which has been made for 100 years. It comes from a single vineyard in Haro (in fact, the vineyard borders Lopez de Heredia's Viña Tondonia). Composed of 100% Tempranillo, this classically styled Rioja is aged for 18 months in American oak followed by additional time in bottle.

1970 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1970 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the 'First Growth' lunch in London. Nice clear colour. The bouquet definitely has more vigour then previous bottles encountered, with sandalwood, cigar box and cedar to the fore. Not a complex nose, but nicely defined and unashamedly 'classic' in style. The palate is medium-bodied and well-balanced, good level of ripeness, elegant; harmonious but aloof. The second half is conservative but still fresh with just a touch of piquancy right on the finish. This Lafite is not going to go anywhere, but this shows that good bottles can still be pleasurable. 1970 Latour, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1970 Latour, Pauillac (96JG, 96RP, 94JS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at dinner at Domaine de Chevalier. The Latour ’70 can be such a variable beast. This is certainly one of the better, more representative bottles. Deep garnet in colour, nice limpidity in the glass. It has a beautiful nose that to be honest, sweeps aside the respectable Domaine de Chevalier ’70 poured alongside, like a lord dismissing his servant with a swish of his hand. Graphite, wild black fruit, freshly rolled tobacco and a faint hint of truffle. The palate is medium-bodied and after forty years, still quite austere but the balance is nailed. Masculine and foursquare, a Latour with a lot of horsepower…but not necessarily revving in top gear…at least not after four decades. Lovely cedar and mint on the long, long finish. Wonderful. I do not think this wine will get any better, but a divine vinous experience now. (NM-Wine Journal)" (11/2010)
