1970 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien Top Pick!
1970 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien

94 points John Gilman: "I have been a big fan of the 1970 Ducru-Beaucaillou, but in the past I have always found it just a half step behind the superb 1966. However, the most recent tasting seemed to indicate that the wine is showing more structural integrity and greater depth than it did for the last decade and a half, and it may well be that the wine has simply remained a bit young and I have been underestimating it in the past. This most recent bottle offers up a stunning and still youthful nose of cassis, black cherries, a touch of red currant, cigar ...Read More »

1970 Taylor Vintage Port (cracked capsules)

Now fully mature and sublime, the 1970 Taylor is a lovely port to drink now. 98 points Wine Spectator: "Clearly lives up to Taylor's superb reputation. Deep ruby, with intense violet and chocolate aromas, full-bodied, with gorgeous fruit flavors, full but well-integrated tannins and an extremely long finish. Amazing balance and finesse." (1989) 96 points Robert Parker: "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time ...Read More »

1970 Cheval Blanc, St-Emilion

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at Cheval Blanc dinner at The Ledbury. This has always been a great 1970 Saint Emilion. It has a noticeable deep hue. The nose is unashamedly rustic with mulberry, crushed flowers, wild heather and a touch of chlorophyll. Great definition and vibrancy: a wine wallowing in its secondary aromas. The palate has fine definition and demonstrated much more backbone than the Cheval ’78 tasted alongside. Here, the Merlot is undaunted by the Cabernet Franc and lends it a beguiling fleshiness, especially towards the ...Read More »

1970 Gazin, Pomerol

Robert Parker writes: "Readers may have forgotten (or never knew) that a chunk of this vineyard was sold to Petrus in the early 1970s, but what remains is still a superb terroir and incredibly well-placed on the plateau of Pomerol, adjacent to Petrus and across the road from Lafleur."

1970 Bodegas Bilbainas Pomal Reserva Rioja

A terrific, classic Rioja, from a winery whose top older bottlings can rival some much more famous (and more expensive) names.

1970 Poujeaux, Moulis (6L) 1-pack OWC

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1970 Poujeaux was proffered by current proprietor Mathieu Cuvelier when I was over on the Right Bank. Old vintages of this Moulis can be a surprise. This 46-year-old wine was a little faded, but still yielded pleasure, the nose earthy, a little bony perhaps but still with vestiges of tart red cherries. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins, light in the mouth but balanced and fresh, leafy and herbaceous towards the finish. It held up for 30-40 minutes in the glass before taking its final breaths and oxidizing. O ...Read More »

1970 Rieussec, Sauternes (very high to high shoulder fill, some soiled/torn labels)

*** From Michael Broadbent: "Surprisingly pale, sweet, spearmint nose, medium sweetness and body, nice rich flavour, good acidity." Neil Martin: "A medium-bodied palate, good acidity, a little ephemeral and very floral. Quite sharp but good delineation. A pretty Sauternes with an attractive pineapple finish."

1970 CVNE "Viña Real" Gran Reserva Rioja (5cm fills, bin soiled labels)

94 points John Gilman: "The 1970 Viña Real Gran Reserva is a beautiful bottle of Rioja that has still not reached its apogee of peak maturity- even at age forty-four! The excellent nose still has more development to come with further bottle age, but offers up a pure and still fairly primary blend of cassis, dark berries, cigar smoke, nutskin, just a whisper of barnyard, Rioja spice tones and a beautiful base of dark soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with tangy acids, still a bit of backend tannin and outs ...Read More »

1970 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien (1.5L)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine has been fully mature and delicious for many years, so I was not surprised by how stunning this bottle was. It has always been an outstanding wine for the vintage - complex, rich, savory, and the quintessentially elegant Bordeaux. This beauty continues to reveal the fragrance and finesse that one expects from Lafite-Rothschild but so rarely finds. A fragrant, complex bouquet of cedar, herbs, vanillin, fruitcake, and coffee is followed by a soft, gentle, graciously-constructed wine with sweet layers of f ...Read More »

1970 Bodegas Bilbainas "Viña Pomal" Reserva Rioja (3cm fill)

Undoubtedly an underrated, traditional Rioja, Viña Pomal is a bottling which has been made for 100 years. It comes from a single vineyard in Haro (in fact, the vineyard borders Lopez de Heredia's Viña Tondonia). Composed of 100% Tempranillo, this classically styled Rioja is aged for 18 months in American oak followed by additional time in bottle.

1970 Kirwan, Margaux (High shoulder)

Jancis Robinson: "Lovely mellow, glowing colour. Much drier and tighter than the 1975. Intense, dry and sturdy -- less obviously Margaux than the 1975. Much more marked by 1970's firm, not to say rather uncompromising backbone than the mellower 1975. 17.5/20 points (JR)" (02/2009) Wine Spectator: "Medium garnet; ripe black truffle nose, with a tarry note; round, ripe and slightly lean, but elegant; a bit dry." 1970 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1970 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac (91RP, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the few wines that was not purchased in the early 1970s (I made a trade - and a good one, for this bottle), this deep, dark ruby-colored wine exhibits good liveliness in its color. The wine reveals the classic cassis, mineral, weedy tobacco, spicy nose of a top Pauillac. Full-bodied, concentrated, and close to full maturity, it is a flavorful, expansive, chewy wine. Although it has been distressingly inconsistent in previous tastings, I am convinced the off bottles had been cooked - undoubtedly by exposure to high temperatures. In this tasting, it was a delicious, outstanding example of the vintage that should continue to drink well for another decade. (RP)" (06/1996)

1970 Haut-Brion, Graves
Bid on this bottle of 1970 Haut-Brion, Graves (92RP, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1970 Château Haut-Brion is a First Growth that has probably been over-shadowed by the Latour 1970 during its lifetime. However, this bottle proves that it is not to be underestimated; it highlights the glaring gap that exists between itself and another First Growth, the 1970 Château Margaux that I tasted alongside. There is plenty of vigor on the nose with dashing red berry fruit, cedar and black olive - just very Haut-Brion.The palate is medium-bodied, well balanced and fresh, nothing over-ambitious, just a Claret in the traditional sense of the word that gently builds towards a sous-bois dominated finish. This is an excellent showing, stout and a little austere, and you could argue an Haut-Brion with its peak in its wing-mirrors. Yet good bottles such as this will continue to offer pleasure for another decade. (NM)" (07/2016)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1970 Chappellet Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (96RP, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1970 Chappellet Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is pale brick in color with a very pretty nose of dried roses, kirsch and incense with nuances of crushed rocks, cigar box and new leather. This is quite an elegant vintage, featuring a medium body and very soft, powdery tannins framing the fragrant cigar box and earthy layers, finishing with epic persistence and on a compelling meaty note. 1970 La Mission Haut-Brion, Graves
Bid on this bottle of 1970 La Mission Haut-Brion, Graves (91JG, 90WS). John Gilman: "The 1970 La Mission is fully mature and drinking beautifully today. The nose offers up a complex blend of saddle leather, black fruit (that became more raspberry-like as it got air), singed cigar tobacco, black truffles, earth and gamey tones. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, complex and resolved, with a certain sturdy rusticity to it that has been typical of the ’70 La Mission since day one, but with excellent focus and depth, a sweet core of black fruit, and fine length on the finish. Structurally this wine is wide open and ready to go, with no rough edges. Drink now-2025." (02/2015)

1970 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1970 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the 'First Growth' lunch in London. Nice clear colour. The bouquet definitely has more vigour then previous bottles encountered, with sandalwood, cigar box and cedar to the fore. Not a complex nose, but nicely defined and unashamedly 'classic' in style. The palate is medium-bodied and well-balanced, good level of ripeness, elegant; harmonious but aloof. The second half is conservative but still fresh with just a touch of piquancy right on the finish. This Lafite is not going to go anywhere, but this shows that good bottles can still be pleasurable. 1970 Angelus, St-Emilion
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1970 Angelus, St-Emilion. With an untraditional cépage, and a reputation that--in recent years--has placed it at a quality level above its already enviable Premier Grand Cru Classé status, Angelus is now on fire. The 1970 is a rare chance to sample an earlier venture from this esteemed St-Emilion estate. Roughly 50% Cabernet Franc, 45% Merlot and 5% Cabernet, this is an example of the château's early farmhouse style. No lavish oak and flashiness in evidence here.

1970 Suduiraut, Sauternes (375ml)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A deep amber colour and a Beerensauslese-lite nose that is well defined, although lacking some botrytis. There are scents of Satsuma, beeswax and just a little chlorine. The palate is commendable, well balanced, a little ginger on the entry leading to a balanced palate with orange rind, Seville orange marmalade, almost Barsac-like on the finish. (Previously - Suduiraut can make powerful, rich wines that are often rustic and excessively alcoholic and hot when young. I am told they become more civilized with age, and certain ...Read More »

1970 Latour, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1970 Latour, Pauillac (96JG, 96RP, 94JS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at dinner at Domaine de Chevalier. The Latour ’70 can be such a variable beast. This is certainly one of the better, more representative bottles. Deep garnet in colour, nice limpidity in the glass. It has a beautiful nose that to be honest, sweeps aside the respectable Domaine de Chevalier ’70 poured alongside, like a lord dismissing his servant with a swish of his hand. Graphite, wild black fruit, freshly rolled tobacco and a faint hint of truffle. The palate is medium-bodied and after forty years, still quite austere but the balance is nailed. Masculine and foursquare, a Latour with a lot of horsepower…but not necessarily revving in top gear…at least not after four decades. Lovely cedar and mint on the long, long finish. Wonderful. I do not think this wine will get any better, but a divine vinous experience now. (NM-Wine Journal)" (11/2010)
