1964 Bodegas Bilbainas Vendimia Especial Rioja (top shoulder fills) (Previously $150)

Founded in the 1859 by a group of Bordelais to export to the wine-starved French market after phylloxera had ravaged its vineyards, the bodega's original name was Savignon Frères & Cie, but was changed to Bilbaínas after being purchased by a group of Bilbao businessmen. The Spanish royal family, Winston Churchill, and Salvador Dalí were among the wine's ardent admirers. The wines represent classic Rioja in both history and character. They are based in Haro, as are other iconic bodegas such as Muga, La Rioja Alta, CVNE, Lopez de Herédia.

Bilbainas was founded in 1859 by a group of Bordelais who exported back to wine-starved France where phylloxera had ravaged its vineyards. 1964 Berberana Reserva Rioja (top shoulder, some stained labels) (Previously $200)

Berberana was known back in the day for the quality of their wines - we're talking pre 1970's vineyard expansion and grubbing of older vines for more productive clones. 1964 is a magical vintage in Rioja, undoubtedly the best post second world war vintage for the region. Others such as 2001 may prove to be its equal, but for now, '64 reigns supreme.

1964 La Rioja Alta "904" Rioja Reserva
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1964 La Rioja Alta "904" Rioja Reserva (97RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1964 Gran Reserva 904 is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Graciano and 10% Viura that was raised for one year in an 18,000-liter vat and then six year in old barrels with nine rackings. It has a brick core with a tawny rim. The nose is very fragrant and sensual with crushed flowers, small dark cherry, minerals and a mature Musigny-like aroma. It is very pure and beautifully defined. It is less coarse than the ‘73 Gran Reserva 890 tasted alongside, the tannins finer and more supple, with wonderful cohesion and harmony, plus a silky smooth texture that glides across the palate. It does taste like a great old Burgundy, but the harmony, freshness and complexity is one of the finest I have encountered on any Spanish wine. This is a wine made of dreams. (NM)" (08/2012)

1964 Lopez de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" Rioja
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1964 Lopez de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" Rioja. Lopez de Heredia makes some of the most traditional wines in Rioja. Wines that are elegant, lithe, ageworthy (and often ageless), ethereal, and must haves for any serious cellar. If the Bosconia gran reservas mimic very good, aged Burgundy, Tondonia would be the Bordeaux counterpart. As the cellar keeps an extensive library, in their constantly cool, humid, mold covered cellar, the provenance of these bottles is typically first rate. Lopez de Heredia: true artisans, keepers of the flame, and if you ask us, a Spanish national treasure.
