1964 Bodegas Bilbainas Vendimia Especial Rioja (top shoulder fills)

Founded in the 1859 by a group of Bordelais to export to the wine-starved French market after phyloxera had ravaged its vineyards. Its original name was Savignon Frères & Cie, but was changed to Bilbaínas after being purchased by a group of Bilbao businessmen. The Spanish royal family, Winston Churchill, and Salvador Dalí were among the wine's ardent admirers. The wines represent classic Rioja in both history and character. They are based in Haro, as are other iconic bodegas such as Muga, La Rioja Alta, Cune, Lopez de Heredia.

1964 Bodegas Franco Españolas "Royal Tete de Cuvee" Gran Reserva Rioja

Bodegas Franco-Espanolas is an incredibly beautiful winery, dating back to the 1890s, in the heart of Logroño, Rioja's largest city. The winery has been wonderfully and thoughtfully restored. The winemaker, Carlos Estecha, who has been making the wines for 24 years -- and who also serves as the winemaker for Franco-Española's sister winery, Federico Paternina -- is an accomplished artist as well as a winemaker, and a fascinating person to listen to. And the wines are exceptional -- from the good quality, fresh young wines, to the Reservas and Gran Reserv ...Read More »

1964 Berberana Reserva Rioja (top shoulder, some stained labels) (Previously $200)

Berberana was known back in the day for the quality of their wines - we're talking pre 1970's vineyard expansion and grubbing of older vines for more productive clones. 1964 is a magical vintage in Rioja, undoubtedly the best post second world war vintage for the region. Others such as 2001 may prove to be its equal, but for now, '64 reigns supreme.

1964 Haut-Brion, Graves
Bid on this bottle of 1964 Haut-Brion, Graves (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "1964, while a mixed vintage for the wines of the Medoc as a result of many properties being caught by the heavy rains, was a very good year for the Graves chateaux. Haut-Brion's 1964 is fully mature as evidenced by the amber edge to its color, and has a splendidly rich, earthy, tobacco-and-mineral-scented bouquet. Ripe, deep, supple, voluptuous flavors are present on the palate. (RP)" (01/1998)

1964 Latour, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1964 Latour, Pauillac (97JG, 96VN, 92RP). John Gilman: "As I mentioned back in 2007, in my article on this vintage, the ’64 Latour is the finest wine made in the Médoc in this year, as the grapes were all picked before the rains arrived in October. Back in the day, this was one of the vintages of Latour that I used to drink with quite a bit of frequency, as this fact was generally not known, so the Latour was often lumped together with the other ’64 Médoc wines and not priced particularly high. Sadly, those days are now long, long gone down the road. In any event, this most recent magnum of 1964 Latour was utterly brilliant and even better than a regular-sized bottle served at the same event, offering up a lovely veneer of red fruit tones to go along with the classic smoky, black fruity Latour signature nose. The bouquet is a deep and complex blend of cherries, red and black currants, a nice touch of meatiness, walnuts, a brilliantly complex base of gravelly soil

1964 Brane-Cantenac, Margaux
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1964 Brane-Cantenac, Margaux. Belonging to the Lurton family since 1920, Chateau Brane-Cantenac owes its fame to an exceptional soil of deep "graves" from the quaternary era. Brane Cantenac's well drained gravel vineyards stress the vines, forcing deep roots and producing small berries that further concentrate the expression of this unique terroir. The finished wine gains aromatic qualities that have been considered unique since the 19th century. Long recognized as one of the premier vineyards in the Bordeaux, Brane Cantenac has produced an elegant and yet powerful wine capable of improving over many years.
