Bid on this bottle of 1958 Charles Krug Vintage Selection Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Charles Krug Winery was the first winery founded in the Napa Valley, in 1861 by Prussian immigrant Charles Krug. He carefully selected rootstocks, varietals and vineyard sites; this was a novel concept in late 19th Century America. The winery was purchased by Cesare and Rosa Mondavi in 1943 (for $75,000, and what an investment that turned out to be!). Cesare Mondavi soon spearheaded a dramatic renaissance in the decade that followed. Wine historian Charles Sullivan writes in his book, Napa Wine, "By the early 1950's it was irrefutable that the Valley's Big Four had been augmented by one... the Charles Krug Winery." This nearly 50-year-old Cabernet was fashioned in a classic style, later emulated by legions of mere copies. The winemaking criteria for the Krug Vintage Selection Cabernet was established in 1944: 100% Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon aged in oak. Now, do you dare open it?
Starting Bid: $400.00
