91-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Once again prominent wood stops just short of dominating the overtly spicy nose of cassis, black cherry, lavender and warm earth scents. There is excellent power and volume to the concentrated, intense and mouth coating mineral-driven flavors that culminate in an impressively long and balanced finish. This is a bigger wine than the Grèves and should amply reward mid-term cellaring. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding*" (04/2016) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 V...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Frémiets exhibits lovely aromas of raspberries and cherries mingled with orange rind, spice and raw cocoa. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and fine-boned, from more calcium-rich soils than Les Chevrets and built around bright acids and fine, chalky tannins. (WK)" (01/2020) 91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A restrained if clearly ripe nose is comprised by notes of cassis, black cherry, violet and pretty rose petal hints. The sleeker and more refined is perhaps not q...

91-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is more discreet and reserved with wonderfully pure notes of red, black and blue fruits plus a lovely hint of violets that sit atop dusty, refined and gorgeously delineated flavors supported by an almost pungent minerality on the textured, long and explosive finish. This is more concentrated and structured than usual and should live for a very long time. *Outstanding*" (04/2007) 92 points John Gilman: "The 2005 Fremiets is also showing atypically black fruity in character, but also offers simply striking fo...

90-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Once again there an elevated level of ripeness to the still fresh nose of cassis, black cherry and poached plum. The slightly more elegant and more concentrated medium-bodied flavors possess fine richness; indeed the texture is quite seductive, all wrapped in a complex, long and balanced finale where a hint of bitter pit fruit arises. *Outstanding*" (04/2020) 91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As usual, the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Angles is the most immediate and seductive wine in the cellar, burs...

92-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An intensely spicy and strikingly fresh red and blue Pinot fruit nose enjoys added breadth in the form of plum, earth and wet stone nuances. There is excellent detail and plenty of punch to the medium-bodied flavors that are brimming with a cool minerality, all wrapped in a balanced, linear and hugely persistent finish. This too is just terrific but be prepared to be patient. *Outstanding, Sweet Spot*" (04/2013) 92-94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good medium bright red. Aromas of black che...

90-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is compositionally similar to the Taillepieds but even riper and with just a bit more spice elements. There is good intensity and minerality on the delicious middle weight flavors that also coat the palate on the youthfully austere and slightly warm finish that delivers fine length. *Outstanding*" (04/2020) 93 points James Suckling: "Blueberry, plum and flower aromas with some new leather. It’s full-bodied with lots of fruit and density. Flavorful and stylish at the finish. A little tight now. " (08/2020) ...

93-95 points Vinous: "The 2018 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has an outgoing bouquet similar to the Taillepieds, albeit one with more intellectual weight and gravitas behind it. Black cherries, blueberry and light cassis aromas reveal crushed stone and undergrowth notes, all delivered with intensity and superb delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly firmer, stockier tannins than the Taillepieds, darker fruit and grainier texture toward the persistent finish. I see this has having real long-term potential. Excellent. (NM)" (10/2019) 92-94 p...

89-91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An appealingly layered nose is also admirably fresh and bright with its mix of various red and dark berries that also display hints of spice and earth. The rich and attractively textured medium weight flavors manage to retain equally good detail on the softly mineral-inflected finish that it at once finer, more complex, longer and better balanced." (04/2019) 91 points John Gilman: "The 2017 Volnay villages from the Lafarges adds yet more sappiness to the mid-palate in comparison to the wines that preceded it in ...

92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet unwinds in the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet mingling raspberries and blood orange with savory bass notes of woo smoke, loamy soil, espresso roast and raw cocoa. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and lively, with a deep and tight-knit core, bright acids and a long finish. (WK) " (01/2020) 91-93 points Vinous: "The 2018 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru, which underwent replanting up until 1999, has an appealing bouquet of wild strawberry, raspberry prese...

89-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Volnay is a soft, caressing wine. The bouquet is open and expressive, while the fruit reveals considerable nuance. There is a hint of firmness to the tannins, but there is enough fruit to provide balance. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. (NM)" (05/2011) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium red. Pretty, floral aromas of red raspberry and cherry. Smooth, pure and fruit-driven, with good lift and underlying spiciness. Not particularly sweet or fleshy but juicy and bright, with a firm, pe...

94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs is a terrific wine in the making, unfurling in the glass with a complex bouquet of rose petals, ripe red berries, orange rind, raw cocoa, grilled squab and sweet soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and succulent, its vibrant core of fruit framed by fine, powdery tannins. The finish is long and perfumed. (WK)" (01/2020) 93-95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A distinctly cooler nose is composed by aromas of red currant, cherry and a broad array o...

91-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is the first wine to exhibit any appreciable wood influence and even here it is a background element on the markedly ripe aromas of cassis plum liqueur and exotic tea-scented nose. The strikingly refined middle weight flavors brim with minerality on the rich but lilting finale where the only reproach is a subtle touch of warmth. Lovely stuff though make no mistake, it should amply reward extended cellaring. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding*" (04/2020) 92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Aromas of red berri...

92-95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Perfumed, airy and more high-toned aromas derive more from the red side of the fruit spectrum while displaying pretty touch of spice and exotic tea. The cool and gorgeously textured medium-bodied flavors also brim with minerality on the focused, powerful and particularly firm finale that goes on and on. This is wonderful and I very much like the style and sheer class of this built-to-age Taillepieds. *Outstanding, Don't Miss!*" (04/2020) 93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "More muscular than the more et...

91-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here the nose is appreciably fresher and also displays notes of red currant though the minerality now extends to the aromas and in hallmark Frémiets style, also suffuses the rich, supple and refined middle weight flavors blessed with ample amounts of dry extract that buffer the moderately firm tannins on the impressively long finish. The minerality is so strong that there is a Chablis-like saline character. A classy effort of finesse. " (05/2011) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Volnay Fremiet ...

95 points Decanter: "Deeper in colour than some of the d'Angerville wines in 2017, although that is no indication of quality, this comes from the high part of the premier cru close to the Clos des Chênes. Dense yet focussed with stylish, scented oak and a sturdy tannic backbone, this is another classy red from François Duvivier. Drinking Window 2024 - 2032. (TA)" (10/2018) 91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is one of the more ethereal wines in the cellar, exhibiting classy aromas of red cherries, spices,...

94 points Decanter: "This 1.6ha parcel is in the middle of the slope, two metres above the Clos des Angles on poor, stony soils over a limestone base. Crunchy, elegant and refined, it has lovely texture, raspberry sweetness and fine-boned tannins, finishing with a saline, mineral bite. (TA)" (10/2018) 92-94 points Vinous: "The 2017 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has an expressive bouquet with veins of blue fruit that strafe the vibrant raspberry and crushed strawberry. Here there is fine mineralité tucked just underneath. The palate is vibrant, almost efferves...

97 points Decanter: "This superb 2.15ha monopole, located on white clay soils just behind the winery and high on the slopes above Volnay, has made one of the great wines of the vintage in 2017. It's powerful, structured and complex, with layers of red cherry, raspberry and pomegranate fruit, sinewy tannins and pools of concentration. A stylishly oaked wine that's long, mineral and satisfying. Drinking Window 2025 - 2035. (TA) " (10/2018) 94-96 points Vinous: "The 2017 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru is the famous crown jewel monopole of the domaine, ost...

95 points Decanter: "Fermented with 40% whole bunches for the first time in 2017 as an experiment, this has to be considered a success, adding a layer of Asian spices to the wine. Precise and refined, with lots of sappy, refreshing fruit, this is one of a series of delightful Lafarge wines this year. (TA) " (10/2018) 91-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Once again the elegant nose is cool, airy and restrained with its gorgeous aromas of rose petal, lavender and freshly crushed cherry and raspberry scents that are liberally laced with spice hints....

91-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Moderate amounts of wood and menthol elements frame the prominently ripe aromas of black pinot fruit liqueur aromas that are trimmed in an abundance of pretty spice nuances. The opulently, even lavishly rich medium weight flavors saturate the palate with sappy dry extract which also serves to buffer the more evidently mineral-inflected finish that is both firm and youthfully austere. Patience definitely required here." (04/2017) 90-93 points Vinous: "Full ruby-red. Musky black cherry and chocolate on the nose. S...

96 points Decanter: "Living up to Taillepieds' reputation as one of Volnay's very best premiers crus, this old-vine cuvée from a steep 1.05ha parcel on white clay and limestone soils is a revelation. Amazingly fresh and vibrant, it's a Pinot lover's Pinot Noir, with the texture, brightness and sense of wonder that make Burgundy so special. Drinking Window 2025 - 2032. (TA) " (10/2018) 92-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "from a 1.07 ha parcel of 35+ year old vines). Here the reticent nose is at once ripe yet cool with a lovely layered quality to t...

Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 2013 Domaine Clos de la Chapelle Volnay 1er Cru "Taillepieds" (93JG, 91WS). John Gilman: "The new addition of Taillepieds in the Clos de la Chapelle cellars hails from a parcel of forty to fifty year-old vines that lie between the rows of Domaines de Montille and Marquis d’Angerville, so very well-placed indeed. With the hail damage, there were only three casks of this wine this year, with one barrel being new oak. The wine is excellent and sappy on both the nose and palate, offering up a deep and complex nose of red and black cherries, gamebird, a complex base of soil, woodsmoke, fresh herbs and a deft framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, elegant and nicely reserved out of the blocks, with a fien core of fruit, ripe tannins and a long, nascently complex and very classy finish. This was one of the 2013s where the malo was late to finish and the wine had only been bottled a month prior to my visit. A superb new source for top

Bid on this 7-bottle lot of 2013 Domaine Vincent Girardin Volnay 1er Cru "Les Pitures" ((88-91BH), 91VN). Vinous: "Good bright red. Elegant aromas of redcurrant, flowers and minerals. Silky and fine-grained, conveying a restrained sweetness to its redcurrant and spice flavors. Not a fleshy wine but not thin either. Lovely violet lift gives it a light touch. This needs time in bottle but the tannins are very well integrated and not at all dry. (ST)" (03/2016)

2012 Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils Volnay 1er Cru "Les Caillerets - Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" 6-Pack (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
New!
92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. Maybe I underestimated the 2012 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets Ancienne Cuvee Carnot from Bouchard Père & Fils? Certainly seems so, judging by this gorgeous example. Here, it has a conservative and tightly-controlled bouquet with a touch of soy mixed in with the red berry fruit that does not quite deliver the harmony and poise of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied and bitter on the entry. There is plenty of sour cherry and juniper berry here, edgy and tensil...

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2015 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru "Les Santenots du Milieu" ((92-95BH), 94DC, 94JG, 93RP, 93VN). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is also brilliantly spicy with its ultra-pure and pretty essence of black raspberry, floral and warm-earth suffused aromas. Like the Champans there is excellent underlying tension supporting the broad-shouldered flavors that are even more mineral-driven on the muscular, taut and driving finish. This wine always ages well and typically needs quite a bit of it and this terrific effort will be no exception. This could well rival the 1999, 2005 and 2010 versions in time. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding*" (04/2017)

2012 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru "Champans" 6-Pack (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
New!
94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here too there is a touch of reduction that is again just enough to shave the top notes off the otherwise pure and elegant nose so I would also suggest decanting this if you're tempted to try a bottle young. There is very good phenolic maturity to the supporting and well-integrated structure that shapes the sleekly muscular medium weight plus flavors that exude a fine minerality on the seductively textured finish. This robust effort is clearly built for the very long haul and other than perhaps trying a bottle young ...

2015 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Pommard 1er Cru "Combe Dessus" 6-Pack (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
New!
90-92 points Vinous: "Dark ruby-red. Complex nose melds black cherry, licorice, violet, cocoa powder and spices, along with a faint leathery nuance. Very ripe but not at all roasted, conveying an impression of purity to its fruit-driven flavors of black cherry and blackberry. Lovely acidity draws out the long, positively tart finish. This wine smells like a Volnay, but that's hardly surprising as it's made by a producer in Volnay from vines in Les Combes Dessus, on Pommard's border with Volnay. (ST)" (01/2017) 89-91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A...
