92 points Wine Spectator: "Incredibly concentrated, with phenomenal amounts of fruit extract. Needs time to show it all, but the plum, tobacco and black cherry aromas and flavors stay with you for a long time on the firm finish. " (12/1992)
Price: $119.99

90-92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here too the nose is cool, elegant, airy and high-toned with its pretty array of red cherry, spice and rose petal-suffused aromas. The intense and well-detailed bigger-bodied flavors possess a lovely sense of underlying tension before culminating in a stony, youthfully austere and balanced finale. Like the Pommard villages, this is not particularly concentrated yet the overall sense of harmony makes this quite attractive." (04/2019)

92-95 points Vinous: "Bright, dark red-ruby. Medicinal blueberry and licorice aromas are lifted by a minty high note; less showy and more restrained on the nose than the Taillepieds and Caillerets today. Then wonderfully dense, primary and pure on the palate, but more vertical and less opulent than the Taillepieds and Caillerets. Strong mineral energy accentuates the impression of vibrancy. A bit less open to inspection today owing to its firm tannic spine. (ST)" (01/2018) 95 points Wine Spectator: "Pure and intense, featuring cherry, black currant and...

90-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A background note of menthol sits atop the spicy combination of floral and the pure essence of dark pinot fruit. The highly energetic and equally pure middle weight flavors brim with minerality on the beautifully refined, saline and even firmer finish that also exhibits a trace of youthful austerity. This well-balanced effort is really quite lovely and very Frémiets in character. *Outstanding*" (04/2018) 91-93 points Vinous: "Bright medium ruby. Brooding aromas of black cherry, blueberry and violet. Dense, sappy...

Paul Pernot has run the domaine since 1955 and now his three sons are assisting him. They own 19 hectares of fantastic vineyards in the Cote de Beaune, but sell a vast majority of it to negociants, including Drouhin. The 20% or so that they bottle themselves are pure, elegant, and delicious representations of their best parcels. While most wines see some new oak and they only use barrels for three years, he bottles early in order to preserve freshness and avoid any noticeable oakiness.
Price: $49.99

92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A more restrained nose reluctantly offers up a bit more deeply pitched nose of violet, plum and anise hints. The sleek, delicious and beguilingly vibrant medium weight flavors culminate in a dusty, complex and sneaky long finish. While this is labeled as a villages, it performs at a 1er level." (04/2019) 92 points Decanter: "Dominique Lafon uses his young-vine fruit from Santenots and En Champans to make this delightfully drinkable village Volnay. Crunchy, fresh and vibrant, it has pomegranate and wild strawberry f...

93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here the nose offers a step up in aromatic depth with its very spicy nose of both red and blue pinot fruit that is trimmed in plenty of warm earth and floral character. There is an almost pungent minerality to the broad-shouldered and palate staining medium weight flavors that are utterly delicious before culminating in an explosively long but focused, balanced, chalky and mouth coating finish. A knockout." (04/2013) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-les-Milieu comes from a...

2012 Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils Volnay 1er Cru "Les Caillerets - Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
New!
92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. Maybe I underestimated the 2012 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets Ancienne Cuvee Carnot from Bouchard Père & Fils? Certainly seems so, judging by this gorgeous example. Here, it has a conservative and tightly-controlled bouquet with a touch of soy mixed in with the red berry fruit that does not quite deliver the harmony and poise of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied and bitter on the entry. There is plenty of sour cherry and juniper berry here, edgy and tensil...

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs has a very complex and introverted, but captivating bouquet that draws you in, full of blackberry, briary, cold limestone and just a hint of baking powder in the background lending sweetness. The palate is sensual on the entry. There is roundness and depth here, coupled with very good substance, a hint of white pepper perhaps, and as always, with immense precision on the finish. There is nothing flamboyant here -- just a very aristocratic Volnay for long term aging. (NM)" ...

2017 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
New!
89-91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An appealingly layered nose is also admirably fresh and bright with its mix of various red and dark berries that also display hints of spice and earth. The rich and attractively textured medium weight flavors manage to retain equally good detail on the softly mineral-inflected finish that it at once finer, more complex, longer and better balanced." (04/2019) 91 points John Gilman: "The 2017 Volnay villages from the Lafarges adds yet more sappiness to the mid-palate in comparison to the wines that preceded it in ...

92-93 points Vinous: "(just 12 barrels made from 2.1 hectares, compared to 51 in 2017): Deep, bright ruby-red. Huge, sappy aromas of kirsch and black raspberry are almost liqueur-like but maintain good energy. Incredibly thick yet tangy on entry, then densely packed and extremely concentrated, in more of a 2015 style. And yet the silky, very deep dark fruit and chocolate flavors avoid coming off as heavy. Offers an uncanny combination of solidity and lift. Rossignol told me he destemmed this wine from rocky, iron-rich soil "because it's already massive a...

93 points Wine Spectator: "Ultraconcentrated fruit in this fantastic '01. Impressive full texture, rich and ripe, but also racy and elegant, a bit oaky on the nose but absolutely packed with black fruit and sweet tannins on the palate. Lovely, balanced finish. Should improve with age. *Highly Recommended* (PM)" (05/2004) Vinous: "Medium red. Smoke and meat on the nose, with autumnal notes of underbrush and mushroom. Fatter, richer and sweeter than the Fremiets, with lovely mid-palate shape. Finishes with dusty, even, sweeter tannins. Showing very well ...

95 points Decanter: "Deeper in colour than some of the d'Angerville wines in 2017, although that is no indication of quality, this comes from the high part of the premier cru close to the Clos des Chênes. Dense yet focussed with stylish, scented oak and a sturdy tannic backbone, this is another classy red from François Duvivier. Drinking Window 2024 - 2032. (TA)" (10/2018) 91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is one of the more ethereal wines in the cellar, exhibiting classy aromas of red cherries, spices,...

2017 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay "Vendanges Sélectionnées" (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
New!
93 points Decanter: "A super village cuvée sourced from four different parcels, all of them next to the premiers crus that dominate the centre of the appellation. This has more colour than Lafarge's entry point Volnay, as well as more concentration, grip and texture. It still has the balance that's the hallmark of the domaine's wine, but also more weight. Drinking Window 2022 - 2029. (TA) " (10/2018) 92 points John Gilman: "he 2017 Volnay “Vendanges Selectionées” is even a touch deeper and sappier than the straight villages bottling, delivering fine ...

94 points Decanter: "This 1.6ha parcel is in the middle of the slope, two metres above the Clos des Angles on poor, stony soils over a limestone base. Crunchy, elegant and refined, it has lovely texture, raspberry sweetness and fine-boned tannins, finishing with a saline, mineral bite. Drinking Window 2023 - 2030. (TA)" (10/2018) 92-94 points Vinous: "The 2017 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has an expressive bouquet with veins of blue fruit that strafe the vibrant raspberry and crushed strawberry. Here there is fine mineralité tucked just underneath. The palat...

2017 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru "Mitans" (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
New!
95 points Decanter: "Fermented with 40% whole bunches for the first time in 2017 as an experiment, this has to be considered a success, adding a layer of Asian spices to the wine. Precise and refined, with lots of sappy, refreshing fruit, this is one of a series of delightful Lafarge wines this year. Drinking Window 2023 - 2030. (TA) " (10/2018) 91-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Once again the elegant nose is cool, airy and restrained with its gorgeous aromas of rose petal, lavender and freshly crushed cherry and raspberry scents that are liber...

97 points Decanter: "This superb 2.15ha monopole, located on white clay soils just behind the winery and high on the slopes above Volnay, has made one of the great wines of the vintage in 2017. It's powerful, structured and complex, with layers of red cherry, raspberry and pomegranate fruit, sinewy tannins and pools of concentration. A stylishly oaked wine that's long, mineral and satisfying. Drinking Window 2025 - 2035. (TA) " (10/2018) 94-96 points Vinous: "The 2017 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru is the famous crown jewel monopole of the domaine, ost...

91-93 points Vinous: "The 2017 Volnay Les Chevrets 1er Cru, not the most commonly seen Premier Cru (Nicolas Rossignol also bottles this), has an attractive bouquet with violet petals littered over bright black cherry fruit. The palate is well balanced with grippy tannin, the 30% new oak nicely integrated here, sorbet-fresh with orange zest, tangy marmalade and Indian spices surfacing towards the vibrant finish. Very fine. (NM)" (01/2019) 90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Wafting from the glass with aromas of small red berries, raw cocoa and...

96 points Decanter: "Living up to Taillepieds' reputation as one of Volnay's very best premiers crus, this old-vine cuvée from a steep 1.05ha parcel on white clay and limestone soils is a revelation. Amazingly fresh and vibrant, it's a Pinot lover's Pinot Noir, with the texture, brightness and sense of wonder that make Burgundy so special. Drinking Window 2025 - 2032. (TA) " (10/2018) 92-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "from a 1.07 ha parcel of 35+ year old vines). Here the reticent nose is at once ripe yet cool with a lovely layered quality to t...

93 points Decanter: "A ripe, briary nose of blackberry and blueberry, complemented by some meaty bass notes, presents a striking contrast to the Ronceret’s taut and vibrant, even edgy, palate impression, where chalky tannins and vibrant acids assert themselves. This year, Rossignol produced only one barrel of this distinctive wine. (WK)" (10/2017) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Ronceret was 100% destemmed. Living up to its name there is plenty of blackberry and wild hedgerow on the nose although I would like to see more vigor d...

92-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A restrained yet perfumed nose is the essence of wet stone and ripe Pinot, all trimmed in dried floral notes. Like the Mitans, this is also positively crystalline as the flavors seem to be composed from liquid rock and deliver positively huge length along with the hallmark finishing austerity of a young Taillepieds. A highly impressive effort of impeccable balance. *Sweet Spot. Outstanding* " (05/2011) 91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Volnay Taillepieds is all about minerality and sheer ener...

91-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "More moderate reduction masks the fruit but not the underlying spice and floral hints. There is more volume to the mouth coating medium weight flavors that brim with both dry extract and minerality, all wrapped in a beautifully persistent finish that is shaped by admirably fine-grained but dense tannins. This elegant and sophisticated effort is class in a glass though make no mistake, it will need ample time to realize its full potential. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding*" (04/2018) 92-94 points Vinous: "(100% destemmed...

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A bright, fresh and moderately fruity nose combines notes of red berries with those of dark cherry and earth. There is both good energy and detail to the barely medium weight flavors that offer fine length on the utterly delicious if mildly rustic finish." (04/2018)
Price: $29.99

92-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A strikingly pretty nose features notes of super-fresh aromas of plum, violet, dark currant and pretty spice nuances. The wonderfully sleek and almost painfully intense medium-bodied flavors are also blessed with an abundance of both minerality and sappy dry extract that buffers the very firm tannins on the driving and gorgeously persistent finish that is quite youthfully austere. This is textbook Taillepieds and highly recommended. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding*" (04/2018)

91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Frémiets displays appealing aromas of smoked meats, plums, wild berries, dark chocolate and rich soil. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad-shouldered and velvety, with fine-boned structuring tannins cloaked in sapid and succulent fruit. (WK)" (01/2019) 90-92 points Vinous: "The 2017 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru has a generous, slightly gamey bouquet that unfolds in the glass. The palate is well balanced with sappy red and black fruit infused with liquorish and light tobacc...

Bid on this 2-magnum lot of 2015 Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay ''Le Caillerets-Ancienne Cuvee Carnot'' 1er Cru (1.5L) (92BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here the generous wood treatment presently fights somewhat with the menthol, cassis, spice and essence of black cherry liqueur-suffused nose. There is a beguiling texture to the vibrant, detailed and intensely mineral-driven medium weight flavors that coat the palate with dry extract while delivering marvelous persistence on the very firmly structured finish. This is very definitely built-to-age and it's going to need it. I would add that this is unlikely to make an especially good candidate for early consumption so patience absolutely required. *Don't Miss, Outstanding"" (04/2017)
Starting Bid: $240.00

2002 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru "Champans" 12-Pack (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
New!
92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A still relatively primary nose of perfumed red fruit aromas of simply superb elegance complement precise, pure and firm middle weight flavors that offer excellent depth and outstanding length on the intensely mineral-suffused finish. This is quintessential Champans and a first rate example of the vineyard. Note however that it remains very young and will still need the better part of a decade to reach full maturity." (04/2010) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Rich in cherry flavor, with hints of earth and spice. Firm an...

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2008 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru "Taillepieds" ((91-93BH), 93ST, 92RP, 91WS). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "From 35+ year old vines. his is a classic Taillepieds with is very cool and restrained nose of chalk, stone and airy red berry fruit aromas that are very much in keeping with the wispy, lacy and dancing medium-bodied flavors that possess a superb sense of underlying tension on the gorgeously precise, explosive and mineral suffused finish, which is, in the fashion of a fine Taillepieds, notably austere. This will require time. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding* " (04/2010)

2015 Lucien Le Moine Volnay 1er Cru "Caillerets" 6-Pack (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
New!
92-95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Reduction. The intensely mineral-driven, powerful, focused and explosive flavors remain supremely elegant and refined, all wrapped in an impeccably well-balanced and gorgeously long finale. This is textbook Caillerets though pretty as it is, the very fine but very dense tannins guarantee that this is going to require extended bottle age before it arrives at its peak." (04/2017) 92-95 points Vinous: "Bright dark red; not as saturated as some of these 2015s. Reduced aromas of strawberry, mocha and smoky minerality...

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils Volnay 1er Cru "Les Caillerets - Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" (93BH, 92W&S, 91ST, 90WS). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Mild reduction knocks down the nose and renders it difficult to properly assess. The ripe yet cool, detailed and intensely mineral-driven flavors possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract that imparts a sappy texture to the impeccably well-balanced and explosive finish. The Clos des Chênes is excellent but there is simply another dimension of depth present here. *Don't miss, Outstanding* " (04/2012)
