2016 Smithereens (Skinner) El Dorado White Blend (Previously $20)

Skinner Vineyards & Winery is owned by Mike and Carey Skinner who, during a trip through the area, stumbled upon Skinner Ranch, which was one of the first commercial distilleries in California, owned by Kevin's great, great, great grandfather. They were inspired by the old family connection to buy land in the area and found the current-day winery. Winemaker's Notes: "54% Grenache Blanc, 13% Viognier, 30% Roussane, 3% Marsanne. The 2016 Smithereens is a balanced, medium-bodied expression of a blend, with just the right amount of structure, acid, and fruit ...Read More »

2017 Arnot-Roberts "El Dorado" Gamay Noir

Former Pax assistant winemaker Duncan Arnot Meyers and cooper Nathan Roberts produce beautiful, terroir-driven, varietally pure small production wines. They launched in 2003 and have been slowly, steadily gaining cult status. From the producer: "The Gamay Noir vines at the Barsotti and Witters vineyards in El Dorado are maturing, and we feel the wine we are making from these two sites is getting better every year. The high elevation, decomposed granite soils and impeccable farming by the Mansfield family create a magic combination for this variety."

2015 Sobon Estate "Cougar Hill" Amador County Zinfandel

Wine Enthusiast: "A distinctive cedar and smoke character makes this medium-bodied wine interesting to taste, and the herb and ripe black-cherry flavors underneath give it a substantial fruit component. It's light on tannins but big on flavor. (JG)" (11/2017)

2015 Windchaser El Dorado County Grenache (Previously $30)

Wine Enthusiast: "Savory, earthy aromas set the stage for flavors that are lean, meaty and tea-like, while the texture is smooth and just lightly tannic. Interesting that the color is quite light and brownish, but that's not too unusual for a Grenache, and goes along with the maverick nature of this envelope-pushing wine. (JG)" (08/2018) K&L Notes: Winemaker's notes: "Hand picked, hand sorted. Fermented with native yeast in open top fermenters. 100% whole berry, 15% whole cluster, 15 days on the skins. I love doing a little whole cluster fermentation w ...Read More »

2016 Donkey & Goat "Eliza - Barsotti Vineyard" El Dorado County White Blend

93 points Wine & Spirits: "Working with Ron Mansfield, the Brandts planted a range of white Rhône varieties in 2010, using cuttings from Tablas Creek. They make this blend from clairette, picpoul, vermentino, roussanne and grenache blanc, allowing it to ferment without additions, then aging it in neutral French oak barrels. Initially focused on earthiness, this develops complex layers of flavor that keep giving nuances of pear skin, ramen broth and smoke. The texture feels supple, the flavors clean and rich. This is a fascinating wine to drink now with a ...Read More »

91 points Vinous: "Light youthful violet. Primary cherry and cassis scents along with hints of pungent flowers licorice and smoky minerals. In a lithe style but not at all lacking for depth displaying juicy red and blue fruit flavors and building herb and violet pastille qualities. Silky tannins frame the incisive persistent finish which echoes the floral and blue fruit notes. This comes from an importer and winemaker in the little Sierra Foothills town of Murphys. 2016 Dirty & Rowdy "Shake Ridge Vineyard" Amador County Mourvèdre

Planted in 2003 with additional vines in 2009, Shake Ridge Ranch is carefully maintained by the Kraemer family in Amador County, and they are well-regarded in the region for their meticulous vineyard care. It's exciting to see varieties such as Mourvèdre thrive on the unique hillsides of Amador County, and Shake Ridge Ranch's decomposed granite and quartz soils are seemingly ideal for the variety. 2016 Wilson Foreigner "Rorick Vineyard" Albariño Sierra Foothills (Previously $30)

Winery Notes: "Citrus blossom aromatics, with lemon oil, pineapple, lemongrass, minerality, and viscosity on palate. The Albariño comes from a beautiful vineyard site in Calaveras County, owned and managed by Matthew Rorick and family. The fruit was harvested pre-dawn in mid August at 22.5 deg brix., and promptly hauled "down the hill" to the winery. Whole cluster pressed and fermented in neutral Hungarian oak barrels, there were no additions made to the wine aside from a moderate amount of sulfur dioxide to prevent oxidation. 2015 Two Mile Wines "Tanner Vineyard" Sierra Foothills Mourvèdre

Winemaker's Notes: "This is one of the more elusive of the 13 allowed red Rhone varietals. We used ours mostly for blending--like the French do--but the small amount we held back for its own bottling was constantly in maturation flux. It was super, soaking morel mushroom funky, for a while then tightened up and was full of black fruit. It's in a really good place now but will continue to evolve in a more linear fashion for the next 2-3 years. It's like a darker, more rustic Pinot Noir with more granular textured tannins. 105 cases, 13.6%, TA 6.7g/L, 25 n ...Read More »

2016 Cruse Wine Co. "Rorick Vineyard" Sierra Foothills Chardonnay

Winery Notes: "This wine comes from a completely unique site high in the Sierra Foothills just outside of the town of Murphys. The vines are own-rooted and planted in 1974 in schist soils over a limestone bedrock and was recently purchased by Matthew Rorick and his family. The vine age, elevation, and insanely, rocky soils create incredibly low yielding vines with the tiniest of clusters. Winemaking: The grapes received a short overnight soak on skins, then were gently pressed using a long Champagne press cycle. Juice was transferred to neutral barrels ...Read More »

2011 Keplinger "Lithic" Amador County Rhône Blend

94 points Wine Spectator: "Edgy and rustic, with a dense, potent core of road tar, dark berry, black licorice and raspberry, this is a vital young wine that begs for cellaring, delivering purity, complexity and density. (JL)" (03/2014) 92 points Vinous: "Dark red cherries, menthol, tobacco and savory herbs are some of the many notes that flesh out in the 2011 Lithic. Even with all of its early appeal, the Lithic boasts tremendous depth and has the pedigree to develop beautifully for a number of years. The polished finish is striking, but today, the Lit ...Read More »
