2016 Chanin "Sanford & Benedict Vineyard" Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir (Elsewhere $60) (Elsewhere $60)
Top Pick!
94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict Vineyard, from a site on the southern edge of the Sta. Rita Hills, is the flagship Pinot Noir of the estate and saw the standard 17 months in 15% new barrels. It's beautifully concentrated (which is a trait of this vineyard) with ample red currants, red cherries, spice box, forest floor, and crushed rock aromas and flavors. With medium to full body, a ripe, layered texture, good acidity, and sound underlying structure, it's going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for 10-15 year...

It has a brilliant bouquet of crisp white peach, tart pineapple, salty minerality, and white flowers. This carries to a medium-bodied Chardonnay that has a silky, elegant texture, integrated acidity, and fabulous balance. This terrific effort will keep for upwards of a decade." 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Crisp aromas of raspberry sorbet and cherry-mint glaze meet with a touch of green herbs and menthol on the nose of this bottling, which enlivens the senses. Fresh strawberry and blistered tomato flavors arise on the sip, backed by eucalyptus and pine-needle touches, making for a glass that’s guzzled quickly. (MK)" (12/2019) 94 points Vinous: "The 2017 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard is bright, energetic and full of character. Sans Liege founder and winemaker Curt Schalchlin, who also produces wine under the Groundwork label, balances a reverence for the traditions of the Rhône Valley with the freedom of making wine in California’s Central Coast. The 2018 vintage of “The Offering” is 39% Grenache, 36% Syrah, and 25% Mourvèdre. With a nod to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Curt ably pulls this one off. It’s no wonder that his wines are so popular around here.

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Candied red cherries, concentrated rosewater and riper cola aromas show on the nose of this bottling, which is quite young and needs time to evolve. The palate's tannic edge is really firm right now, but will keep the flavors of plump red fruit and star anise fresh for a long time. (MK)" (08/2019) K&L Notes: Over 20 years ago, founding partner Thomas Stolpman discovered what they believe to be one of the greatest viticultural sites on earth. 96 points Vinous: "The 2016 Pinot Noir Isabelle is essentially a barrel selection from Au Bon Climat. Racy, perfumed and beautifully layered, the 2016 caresses the palate with stunning depth. Orange peel, tobacco, blood orange, spice, star anise and new oak add shades of exoticism throughout. A wine of exquisite beauty, the Isabelle is flat-out stunning in 2016. It got only a modest amount of stems (15%) and was aged in 100% new oak. (AG)" (09/2019) 94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Pinot Noir Isabelle comes mostly from the Bien Nacido Vineyard yet is f...

2018 Sandhi "Patterson Vineyard" Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay
New!
95 points Vinous: "The 2018 Chardonnay Patterson is dazzling from the very first taste. The aromatics alone are breathtaking. Beautifully layered and so articulate, the Patterson will make its case as one of the Chardonnays of the vintage. Lemon confit, marzipan and light tropical accents all add to its allure. I usually avoid comparisons with French wines, as I think that suggests a subservient relationship, but I will make an exception here, as I can think of no better way to describe the Patterson, which at times reminds of a Chablis from the Grand Cr...

2018 Sandhi "Bentrock Vineyard" Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay
New!
94 points Vinous: "The 2018 Chardonnay Bentrock is gracious and ethereal in the glass, with all of the translucent finesse that is so typical of this site. White flowers, mint, white pepper and crushed rocks lend vibrancy and a real feeling of cut. This is an especially minerally, savory Chardonnay that captures the essence of the western side of the Sta. Rita Hills so eloquently. (AG)" (08/2020)

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "One of the larger production single vineyards as well as the only one to go out to distribution, the 2017 Chardonnay 3D comes from a more easterly site that was planted in 2007. It's a richer Chardonnay and offers an ethereal, gorgeously pure bouquet of caramelized citrus, white flowers, pineapple, honeysuckle, and toasted bread. Beautifully layered, seamless, and polished, with medium to full-bodied richness, it's another rocking effort. This was another thrilling lineup from Greg Brewer, and I consistently rate these wines as s...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The finest wine in the lineup is the 2016 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyards and this beauty comes from a cool, ocean-influenced site just to the east of Santa Maria. Aged 19 months in 80% new French oak, it offers a fabulous perfume of blackberries, black and white pepper, cedar, and subtle marine and iodine notes, which is a classic Bien Nacido character. Medium to full-bodied, impeccably balanced, and with a layered, multi-dimensional texture, it’s going to keep for a decade." (11/2018) 95 points Vinous: "The 2016 Syrah Bien Nacido ...

There is a great grip to the tense palate, where a chalky texture delivers flavors of toast, white peach and a light brush of butter. It's clean and crisp yet consequential. (MK)" (03/2020) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard comes from own rooted, 45-year-old vines planted in shale. Richer orchard fruits, orange blossom, spice, crushed rocks, and brioche notes define the bouquet of this classic Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay, which offers bright acidity and good concentration. It's certainly the richest of the three Chardonnays and is going to evolve for at least 7-8 years." (08/2020) 94 points Vinous: "The 2018 Chardonnay So...

Crushed flowers, cedar, tobacco and leather notes give the 2016 striking earthy undertones to play off the dark red/purplish berry fruit. The 50% whole clusters are not especially evident in this fleshy, wonderfully inviting Pinot Noir from Louisa Sawyer and Bob Lindquist. 2016 Bien Nacido "Estate" Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir

Weightless and yet full of flavor, the 2018 is positively stellar. It is yet another fabulous white in this range of new releases from Ojai and a terrific example of the far western edge of Santa Barbara County that is outside of the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. Flavors of crisp apple and lemon channel those mineral notes toward a brisk, taut finish. For plank-roasted trout." (10/2019) 92 points Vinous: "The 2016 Chardonnay Estate (Sta. 2016 Bien Nacido "Estate" Santa Maria Valley Syrah (Elsewhere $60) (Elsewhere $60)
Top Pick!
95 points Vinous: "The 2016 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard is fabulous and also shows just how well suited parts of this site are to Syrah. Dense and pliant, with tremendous character, the 2016 has so much to say. Inky dark fruit, leather, licorice, menthol, spice and tobacco add aromatic nuance, but the 2017 is really a wine of depth, texture and resonance. A dollop of Viognier rounds out the blend. Scents of tangerine oil, mint, dried flowers and apricot envelop the palate as this gracious, alluring Chardonnay gradually opens in the glass. Dried rose petal, sweet red cherry and mint are all beautifully lifted in this very pretty and expressive Pinot Noir. The 2017 is exotic, beguiling and loaded with character. Winery notes: Rajat Parr and Pete Stolpman's esoteric collaboration is labeled "Combe" referring to the French word for a small sheltered valley within a vineyard. This is 100% Trousseau raised in neutral 500L French Oak puncheons. Fermented 2/3 of the Trousseau de-stemmed and 1/3 whole cluster. Lots were kept separate to taste the result of each and we decided the two complimented each other. The whole cluster portion granted a bit of structure and delicate savory notes to the pure juiciness of the de-stemmed wine.

94 points Vinous: "The 2014 Nebbiolo Bricco Buon Natale is bright, precise and beautifully lifted. Kirsch, white pepper, cedar, mint and floral notes give the 2014 a super-classic profile redolent of Nebbiolo character. Medium in body and sinewy, the 2014 is a classically built, austere (in the best sense of the word) wine that offers tremendous varietal character. That's pretty much all there is to it.
