94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The star of the show, the 2010 Isosceles Reserve (90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Merlot aged 21 months in 100% new French oak) is a deep, rich and muscular effort that still has some oak and tannin to integrate. Graphite, smoked dark fruits, exotic spice and sweet oak all emerge from this brilliant effort, and it hits the palate with a full-bodied, concentrated profile that carries layers of sweet tannin, solid mid-palate depth and a great finish. The tannin quality here is exceptiona...

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A notch up on the richness scale, yet still impeccably balanced and light on the palate, the 2011 Estate Cuvee is 48% Syrah, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Petit Verdot. Deep, rich and layered, with thrilling cassis, blackberry, lead pencil, spice, spring flowers and smoke, it flows onto the palate with awesome purity, a straight focused profile and sweet tannin that emerge through the mid-palate and finish. This is not a blowsy, overdone effort, and is seamless and incredibly drinkable. It needs 2-3 years of bot...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 The Ripper (Grenache) is up with some of the greatest expressions of this variety in California. Aged in a combination of concrete and neutral demi-muids, it offers truly spectacular notes of kirsch, black berries, rose petals, licorice and herbes de Provence as well as a full-bodied, rich, voluptuous and unctuously textured feel on the palate. Possessing thrilling purity of fruit, tons of glycerin, superb concentration and a blockbuster finish, drink this hedonistic and sexy Grenache anytime over the co...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Syrah James Berry Vineyard Bone Rock opens in the glass with complex aromas of ripe black fruits, rich spice, cracked pepper, licorice and savory notions of grilled meats. On the palate, it's full-bodied, fine-grained and intensely concentrated, with a firm, tight-knit core and unusual energy. The finish is long, precise and penetrating. While the 2011 vintage tends to be tainted by association with the challenges producers faced on California's North Coast, conditions were not so adverse in Paso Robles:...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A blend of 48% Syrah, 35% Grenache and 37% Mourvèdre, the 2015 Vertigo is another blockbuster 2015 from Jensen. It’s deep ruby color is followed by a sweet bouquet of crème de cassis, black raspberries, strawberries, violets, and chocolaty oak. It’s a round, supple, incredibly sexy GSM that has full-bodied richness, loads of power and depth, yet also shows the more charming, forward style of the 2015 vintage in Paso Robles. Drink it anytime over the coming decade." (08/2017) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Comprised of...

94-97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Not yet bottled and tasted out of barrel, the 2010 Booker Vineyard Syrah Fracture is possibly the most impressive vintage of this to date. A blend of 100% Syrah that’s aged all in French oak, it delivers a stunning bouquet of smoked black fruits, toast, chocolate, roasted meats, and crushed flowers that gives way to a full-bodied, structured, and elegantly put together palate. Chewy, ripe tannin frames the finish beautifully, and this is impressive. It should benefit from short term cellaring on release, and have a fairly broad...

97-99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Hold onto your hats with this one, the 2014 My Favorite Neighbor Proprietary Blend will see 24 months in barrel, and there will only be a single cuvee in 2014. This insanely good barrel sample gives up serious, inky, yet pure notes of violets, licorice, black raspberries, creme de cassis and graphite to go with building tannin, a stacked mid-palate and blockbuster length. I'd like to have a case of it in the cellar. (JD)" (08/2016)
Price: $169.99

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "More dense and rich, the 2010 Heart Stone Vineyard is a co-fermented blend of 51% Syrah and 49% Grenache that comes from a small 7-acre, south-facing vineyard located on the western side of Paso Robles. Aged mostly in large oak puncheons for 20-28 months, it offers up a savory, complex bouquet of kirsch and blackberry-like fruit, meat juice, Provencal herbs, dried licorice, and dusty minerality. Gorgeous on the palate as well, with a deft, elegant texture, building richness, and layers of chewy tannin, this beaut...

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2014 Lorraine offers more black fruits than normal, with plenty of Reva-like iodine, sagebrush, melted licorice, and smoked earth notes as well as more black olive and cassis with time in the glass. It has the classic silk and elegance on the palate, however, and offers a full-bodied, layered, voluptuous texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a blockbuster finish. As always, it’s the most seamless and elegant in the lineup. Drink it any time over the coming 20 years or more. Drink now-2038." (11/2018) 96 points Vinous: "Lurid viol...

97 points Vinous: "Opaque ruby. Powerful, deeply pitched black and blue fruit, candied licorice, violet pastille and fruitcake flavors are braced by a spine of juicy acidity and a hint of smoky minerals. Stains the palate with densely packed cassis, bitter cherry and blueberry flavors that pick up exotic spice, cola and dark chocolate on the back half. This deeply concentrated wine shows remarkable clarity and litheness for its richness and finishes extremely long and spicy, with a resonating floral note and chewy, steadily building tannins. 98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The flagship 2017 Estate Cuvée (49% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 21% Petit Verdot) spent 15 months in 90% new French oak, and I certainly blew the barrel review on this wine. It offers a brilliant bouquet of crème de cassis, crushed violets, lead pencil, chocolate, and a rocking sense of minerality. Deep, full-bodied, concentrated, and seamless on the palate, it's about as polished and sexy as they come in the vintage." (10/2019)

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Surprisingly tannic and structured for a wine that’s normally the most approachable and sexy, the 2012 Paderewski Vineyard checks in as a blend of 45% Zinfandel, 36% Mourvedre, 12% Tempranillo and 7% Petite Sirah. It possesses the classic chalky minerality of the vineyard to go with exotic perfumed notes of black raspberry, plums, brambly underbrush and assorted background meatiness. This all flows to a full-bodied, elegant and polished wine that has solid mid-palate depth and chewy, firm tannin on the finish. Gi...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Starting out the tasting and absolutely rocking, the 2011 The Ripper checks in as a blend of 100% Grenache that was brought up in equal parts concrete and neutral barrel. Offering up layers of kirsch, dried underbrush, white pepper and hints of spring flowers, it flows onto the palate with a medium to full-bodied, vibrant profile that gains richness and depth with air. Leaning towards the more focused, elegant side of the spectrum, this beauty doesn’t lack for texture or length. Give it a year or three and enjoy ...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Kicking off the 2011s and about as seductive and sexy as they come in the vintage, the 2011 Paderewski Vineyard is an eclectic blend of 34% Zinfandel, 31% Mourvedre, 16% Tempranillo, 10% Syrah and 9% Petite Sirah that comes from a warmer terroir of chalky, calcareous soils. Full-bodied, seamless and perfectly balanced, it offers brilliant aromas and flavors of black raspberry, rose petal, bramble and violets that are to die for. A big wine to be sure, yet it stays remarkably elegant, poised and fresh on the palat...

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A similar blend to the 2015, the 2014 Terry Hoage Vineyard (48% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 22% Mourvèdre) is a deeper, richer wine that offers sensational notes of blackberries, currants, pepper, crushed violets and hints of graphite. Deep, rich and layered, yet light on its feet as well as elegant and graceful, this sensational 2014 has sweet tannin, good acidity and a big finish. A multi-vineyard blend of 63% Syrah, 19% Mourvedre, 15% Grenache, and 3% Petite Sirah that was aged mostly in new French oak, it offers up a gorgeously pure array of black raspberry, charcoal, licorice, lavender, and assorted floral qualities on the nose. This flows to a full-bodied, deft, and elegant palate that has no hard edges, a weightless feel, and masses of fine, yet firm tannin on the finish. Give bottles another y...

Less gamey than when tasted from barrel, it offers up a pure, beautifully fresh bouquet of red and black fruits, spring flowers, ground pepper, leather, and wet stone-like minerality that flows to a rich, fabulously concentrated, and textured palate. Showing the savory, mineral characteristics of the vintage, as well as noticeable underlying tannin, this gorgeo...

Giving up phenomenal notes of creme de cassis, jammy blackberries, licorice, toasted spice and liquid violets, this insanely pure Syrah offers full-bodied richness, an unctuous, seamless, sexy texture, sweet tannin and a killer finish. It's the greatest Syrah I've tasted fr...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A new cuvée that Stephan created for his wife (Pour Elle is French of For Her), the 2013 Pour Elle is a cofermented blend of 72% Syrah, 23% Mourvedre and the rest Viognier that was raised in 50% new French oak and 50% once used barrels. Beautiful on all counts, it has terrific notes of black and blue fruits, graphite, vanilla bean, peach pit and hints of violets on the nose. Full-bodied, fresh and still focused and structured on the palate, it has the expected density and ripeness of the estate paired with excell...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 James Berry Vineyard Proprietary Red is made from 45% Grenache, 29% Mourvedre, 18% Syrah and 8% Counoise (which Justin commented was a blend that was put together relatively late). It saw a big chunk of whole cluster (the Grenache was mostly destemmed though) and was brought up all in puncheons and foudre (the normal concrete component went to the Rocket Block). It offers up gorgeous notes of black raspberries, cherries, cassis, ground herbs and flowers. This beauty hits the palate with incredible purity...

100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2007 James Berry Vineyard has been incredibly consistent for me and was as good as it gets on this occasion. More seamless, silky and elegant than the Heartstone, it has sensational notes of kirsch, black cherries, garrigue, dried herbs and licorice in a seamless, ultra-elegant, polished profile. Incredible in every sense, and a reference point wine both for the estate and the region, it has opened up beautifully since release and is drinking gorgeously today. This is one of those wines I wish I could pour for every reader." ...

Crème de cassis, black currants, smoked meats, licorice and roasted herb characteristics give way to a full-bodied, opulent, incredibly hedonistic Syrah that has a layered, silky texture, sweet tannin and a forward style that’s still going to surprise in the cellar give its balance and richness." 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Paderewski Vineyard is a new bottling from a site Smith developed for Bill and Liz Armstrong, the owners of Epoch. Zinfandel, Syrah, Petit Sirah and Mourvedre are planted in separate plots but co-fermented. Layers of dark fruit meld into flowers, mint, sweet spices, menthol, eucalyptus and plums, with marvelous density and harmony. This shows superb aromatic complexity and tons of nuance to match its absolutely striking personality. It is a dazzling effort, especially for a young vineyard in just its thi...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Just bottled five weeks ago, the 2012 Terry Hoage Vineyard (330 cases) is a thrilling blend of 51% Syrah, 31% Grenache and 18 % Mourvedre. It has an up front approachable and sexy feel in its cherry blossom and black raspberry fruit, crushed flowers and spice aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, concentrated and with sweet tannin, it’s the most ready-to-go in the lineup, yet will still have 10-12 years of longevity. 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted out of bottle, the 2014 Fracture is another incredible wine that flirts with perfection. Its saturated ruby color is followed by an awesome bouquet of creme de cassis, graphite, spring flowers, licorice and hints of minerality. A big, full-bodied, concentrated effort, it has building tannin, no hard edges, thrilling depth and a finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. And despite the overall richness level, it stays light, graceful and lively on the palate. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy through 2...

Full-bodied, seamless and silky, with no hard edges and terrific purity, it's another 2013 from Smith that will open up with another year in bottle. (JD)" (08/2016) 95 points Vinous: "Vibrant purple. Fermented with 40% whole clusters, it’s a big, burly effort that has beautiful creme de cassis, black raspberry, crushed violets, vanilla bean and exotic flower-like qualities all emerging from the glass. It too has a structured feel, with high, yet ripe tannin, so short-term cellaring is also advised here. (JD)" (08/2014) 92...

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "I had previously reviewed the 2008 Saxum James Berry Vineyard from a tasting at the winery, so it was enlightening to get to sit down, and drink through a full bottle. A blend of 52% Grenache, 31% Mourvèdre, and 17% Syrah, aged for 19 months in puncheons and smaller barrels, it presents an unabashedly Californian profile that oozes sweet fruit and flesh, but balances it with a seamless, weightless texture and perfect balance. Notes of sweet crème de cassis, raspberry, smoked meats, and flowers all soar from the glass and are follo...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A classic Paso Robles Syrah (57% Syrah, 24% Grenache and the rest Mourvedre) that delivers on all accounts, the 2014 Heart Stone Vineyard is a big, rich, decadently styled beauty that offers tons of upfront spice, dark fruits, licorice and smoked earth aromatics, with more floral, violets and sappy underbrush notes coming through with air that keep it far for simple or straightforward. Utterly seamless on the palate, with full-bodied richness, a big, rich mid-palate and the chalky tannin that's the hallmark of th...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I was blown away by the 2010 Ripper, a 100% Grenache done in concrete for the first time. It boasts captivating aromatic complexity, layers of sweet, refined fruit and fabulous overall balance. Vivid red fruit, flowers, mint and spices linger on the sublime finish. The Ripper boasts extraordinary varietal expression. Making pure Grenache in Paso Robles is not easy, but this is a model of what can be achieved here. Although impeccably restrained, the sheer glycerin and richness are pure California. The 2010 Ripper...

Incorporating more Mourvedre than normal, it’s made from 43% Grenache, 29% Mourvedre, 18% Syrah and 10% Counoise that’s aged in a combination of concrete and barrel. Rock star stuff, with fabulous black raspberry, cassis, spring flowers and charred meat aromas and flavors, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness and depth, yet stays lively, incredibly pure a...

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Simply put, the 2009 James Berry Vineyard is one of the greatest young wines I have ever tasted from California, or anywhere for that matter. Bright, floral aromatics lead to expressive red fruit in this impossibly elegant, dazzling wine. A melange of rose petals, mint and licorice follows as the James Berry shows off its breathtaking clarity and finesse. Fine-grained, chalky tannins frame the exceptional finish. Frankly, I am surprised this is the first wine of the tasting. Where does one go from here? (AG)" (08...

Possessing perfect integration of its fruit, alcohol, tannin and acidity, it's full-bodied and incredibly seamless, with terrific concentration, a full, layered mid-palate and a blockbuster finish. It's a classic expression of the vineyard and offers up lots of smoked meats, cracked pepper, wild herbs and tons of dark fruit. Big, full-bodied, thick and chewy, it has gorgeous purity and sweetness of fruit. 94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Estate Ext 24 is the, you guessed it, the extended aged version of the Estate cuvee. This was previously called the Alchemist and in 2014 is made from 51% Tempranillo, 28% Syrah, 13% Petit Verdot and 8% Grenache. Getting a few expletives in my rough notes, this beauty sports a deep purple color as well as thrilling aromatics, full-bodied richness, building, firm tannin and straight up awesome purity. The Tempranillo structure is front and center, so I suspect short term cellaring will be the name of t...

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2014 Booker "RLF" Paso Robles Pinot Noir (95RP, 92VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A change up from the 100% Grenache cuvees of the past, the 2014 RLF is 100% Pinot Noir, and it's a damn good one as well. Sporting a deeper ruby color and offering up overflowing notes of black raspberries, toasted spice, sweet oak, forest floor and a touch of marine-like saltiness, this beauty is medium to full-bodied, sexy, seamless and layered on the palate, with a terrific finish. Hats off to winemaker Eric Jensen, who's known as a Syrah and Grenache guy, for this smokin' effort. It should drink nicely through 2024 (although there's no need to hold off). As I've commented in the past, the wines from Eric Jensen at Booker are some of the most impressive releases coming out of California. While in the past, they relied on pure fruit and texture to impress, today they possess layered, elegant and complex characters paired with serious depth, richness and structure. While

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2014 Saxum "James Berry Vineyard" Paso Robles Rhône Blend (98RP, 97WS, 96VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The sensationally pure and seamless 2014 James Berry Vineyard Proprietary Red (42% Grenache, 24% Mourvèdre, 21% Syrah, 8% Counoise and 5% Roussanne) was brought up in a mix of barrels and foudre, followed by six months in concrete tanks. The wine offers incredibly rich and layered notes of black raspberries, creme de cassis, crushed flowers, melted licorice and peppery herbs in its full-bodied, impeccably balanced profile. Showing the more upfront, hedonistic style of the vintage, this full-bodied beauty still has ample underlying tannin, beautiful mid-palate depth and a killer finish that keeps you coming back for more. Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2010 Torrin "The Maven" Paso Robles Grenache (95RP, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the top Grenache-dominated efforts produced in the vintage, the 2010 Mavin is comprised of 82% Grenache and 18% Syrah that was aged in 30% new 500-liter barrels. It offers up spectacular notes of red and black fruits, dried licorice, roasted meats, toast and subtle chocolate nuances on the nose. On the palate, this full-bodied effort is brilliantly concentrated and rich, yet stays remarkably graceful and balanced, with nothing out of place and fantastic overall depth. It still has some oak to integrate, so give it another year or two in bottle; it will age effortlessly for 10-15 years. (JD)" (08/2013)

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2006 Turley "Pesenti" Paso Robles Zinfandel ((91-94RP), 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From the limestone soils of Paso Robles, the 2006 Zinfandel Pesenti is a beauty. The limestone seems to give Zinfandels in that area acidity, vibrancy, and aromatic personalities, but without sacrificing the intrinsic richness and intensity from low yields. This wine boasts fabulous briery, blackberry, and cherry fruit, a crushed rock note, and a long, heady finish. (RP)" (12/2007)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2016 Saxum "James Berry Vineyard" Paso Robles Rhône Blend (100JD, (95-97RP), 96VN). Jeb Dunnuck: "One of the greatest GSM blends to ever come out of California is the 2016 James Berry Vineyard, which is 55% Grenache, 24% Mourvèdre, 13% Syrah, and 8% Counoise. This sensational wine reminds me of the 2016 Mon Aïeul from Pierre Usseglio with its awesome perfume of sweet blackberry and cassis fruits, smoke meats, exotic spice, licorice, and garrigue-like aromas and flavors. Deep, rich and layered on the palate, with a massive core of sweet fruit, this beauty builds with time in the glass and has incredible purity of fruit, a mix of richness and elegance that's hard to describe, sweet tannins, and a huge finish. It's every bit as impressive as the 2007 was on release. It needs a decant if drinking any time soon and should be at its best from 2020-2035. Hats off to Justin Smith for this incredible wine! I finished my note with “the greatest GSM blend from Californ

Of the 2012 Saxum "Terry Hoage" Paso Robles Rhône Blend,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "Just bottled five weeks ago, the 2012 Terry Hoage Vineyard (330 cases) is a thrilling blend of 51% Syrah, 31% Grenache and 18 % Mourvedre. (JD)" (08/2014)
