Wine Enthusiast: "Broad aromas of caramelized red cherry and dried herbs make for a pleasantly savory entry to this bottling from the historic estate. There is a solid amount of herbal expression on the palate, where the dried oregano sets off the tangy black-plum flavors. (MK)" (04/2019)

Vinous: "The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles shows just how appealing the vintage is. Aging in steel and bottling early brings out the aromatic, juicy side of Cabernet. The 2016 is not exactly complex, but it is absolutely delicious. It will make a terrific house pour over the next few years. (AG)" (09/2019) K&L Notes: Wine Advocate: "Readers looking for killer values need look no further than this Foxglove releases from Jim and Bob Varner." (JD, 10/2016) Great wines at very good prices. That is what you get from Foxglove. This is a side project fr...

91 points Vinous: "Pale gold. Mineral-accented orange, pear and white flowers on the perfumed nose, along with a gingery nuance that adds spicy lift. Taut citrus and orchard fruit flavors unfurl slowly and show hints of bitter quinine and anise that build slowly with air. Shows very good depth as well as energy on the finish, which echoes the mineral and citrus fruit notes. (JR)" (09/2018) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Patelin de Tablas Blanc wafts from the glass with notes of rose water, preserved citrus and Provence herbs. On the...

90-92 points Vinous: "Glass-staining ruby. Perfumed aromas of ripe, spice-tinged dark berries and candied flowers pick up an exotic suggestion of apricot as the wine opens up. Silky and energetic in style, offering sappy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a suave touch of Asian spices. Takes a sweet turn on the gently tannic, persistent finish and leaves a note of candied flowers behind. (JR)" (09/2018) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "There is a great core of black plum and dark berry to the nose of this blend of 48% Syrah, 32% Grenache, 16% Mou...

From winemaker Andrew Jones comes this esoteric delight, a lightly sparkling (and lightly colored) rosé of Cabernet Franc made in the pétillant naturel style. Timing is everything with this wine as it must be bottled and capped with just the right amount of remaining natural sugars to continue fermentation (thus, creating captured carbonation). It's not an easy trick to pull off, but when it goes right, it really goes right.

Andrew Jones learned to make wine from the ground up. He started as a vine nursery fieldman, planting and planning vineyards for wineries all over California. This gave him firsthand knowledge of nearly every vineyard on the Central Coast and a knack for finding "diamonds in the rough." Meanwhile, he was building friendships with some great California growers, who'd often offer him small lots of their best grapes on the side. From these beginnings he has built a catalog of delicious, affordable wines that hum with personality.

Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Foxglove Zinfandel (which includes 14% Petite Sirah) has a fruit-forward, ripe, textured style as well as classic notes of plums, leafy herbs, and Asian spices. It's another solid, enjoyable effort from this estate." (10/2019) Vinous: "The 2016 Zinfandel is a fresh, fruity wine to drink now and over the next few years. Juicy black cherry, leather, spice, menthol and cedar add character to this exuberant, racy Zinfandel. This is an especially floral, mid-weight style. (AG)" (09/2019) K&L Notes: At the core of Foxglove is Bob Var...

This 100% Zinfandel is sourced from the Riverstar, Rancho Arroyo Grande, and Hinterland Vineyards in Paso Robles. The wine is aged in American oak barrels (20% new) for nine months. ABV is 14.4%. The winery says of the vintage: "Black cherry and cinnamon on the nose with images of sugar plum fairies dancing through your head. Winery notes: The 2017 Merlot opens with dusty aromas of boysenberry, black cherry, vanilla and toasted oak. A soft, rounded texture delivers mouthfilling flavors of blueberry, blackberry, cinnamon, dark chocolate and cola. Velvety tannins are finely integrated into a rich, chewy finish. The wine is aged in a combination of French (60%) and American (40%) oak barrels, 25% of which are new. A small lot of Zinfandel (7%) was incorporated into the final blend to amplify mid-palate fruitiness. Recommended pairings include beef tenderloin, pasta with lamb r...

About this producer: "Opolo’s estate vineyards were established from 1994-1996, with sites on both the west and east side of Paso Robles. The topographically diverse, coastal landscape of the westside vineyards provides for an intense and unique flavor profile. The heat and dryness of the east side vineyard make it an ideal microclimate for growing Bordeaux varietals. Home to a wide range of varietals, the estate vineyards help allow the team at Opolo to create many unique single varietals as well as award winning blends."

Winemaker's notes: "This is one of my favorite wines to make each year, because I believe that producing a truly stunning Pinot Gris is actually quite difficult. Modeled after an Alsatian style of PG, its focused on texture and elegance, with the perfect combination of richness and ultra bright acidity. My block at Spanish Springs is all very low yielding hillside fruit that grows in about 80% sand. 12 hours of skin contact precedes a very gentle pressing, followed by a slow fermentation in neutral oak barrels. Twice weekly lees stirring helps to build s...

90 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is a terrific value and is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot, and the rest Petite Sirah. It has a Bordeaux-ish bouquet of new saddle leather, cedarwood, tobacco leaf, and smoky black fruits as well as medium body, plenty of fruit, sweet tannins, and a good finish." (11/2018) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Floral aromas of violet and cherry blossom drop into rich black-cherry and cocoa tones on the nose of this widely available bottling. The palate is juicy in black cherry and blackberry flavors, w...

Connoisseurs Guide: "As is the case with its siblings from Opolo, this is a Zinfandel little concerned with subtlety and constraint. It runs straightway to heady, late-harvest ripeness with a sweep of chocolate to its juicy and jammy, berry-like fruit, yet that fruit holds its ground against tannin and heat, and its balancing acidity keeps it away from heavy-footed softness. It is a wine of a style, and not one to pour with milder foods, but those who like their Zins big and ripe will have no complaints. *One Star*" (01/2019) Wine Enthusiast: "This is ...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This unabashedly powerful and jammy wine shows black-cherry candy, sweet roses, vanilla, black rocks and black pepper on the nose. The soft tannins carry forth waves of vanilla, coconut, caramel and blueberry jelly, perfect to please those seeking a whopper of a wine. (MK)" (11/2017) Vinous: "Opaque ruby. Dark fruits, vanilla and licorice on the deeply perfumed nose. Sweet and energetic in the mouth; a peppery note adds spicy lift and cut to sweet cassis and black raspberry flavors. Supple tannins come in late, adding shape ...
