Cognac

Cognac

Cognac is named after the town of Cognac in France. It's a brandy produced in the region surrounding the town and among our favorite spirits. Three grape varieties are used in making Cognac: Ugni Blanc, Colombard, and Folle Blanche. Charente is divided into different districts with different geological and physical characteristics. A worthy but less famous brother of Cognac, Armagnac is actually much older than Cognac. The first document mentioning it dates from the fifteenth century (1461). It is produced in the region of Gascony. Find Armagnac here.

The vineyards of Ragnaud-Sabourin stretch far over the hills in Grand Champage, 33 hectares of Ugni Blanc with a bit of Folle Blanche as far as the eye can see. This estate is known throughout France for having the goods and we couldn't have been more impressed after visiting the property this past spring. Today the estate is run by Annie Sabourin, who is the daughter of the late Marcel Ragnaud, and she makes sure every drop lives up to the property's reputation. The collection of Ragnaud-Sabourin selections we tasted were spellbinding and easily one of ...

Perhaps our biggest folly from this year's visit to Cognac was the idea that we could treat brandy like Scotch. Single barrel Cognac is not the rage in the France, but we figured that there must be some potential given the success we've had with whisky and Bourbon. Cognac, however, is simply not a spirit that stands on its own. It's the result of various processes, the most important of which is the marriage or blending of different casks. This was the case at every producer we visited - except for one. Enter Jacques Esteve - a small farmer with som...

Dudognon Heritage 40 year Cognac (750ml)
Top Pick!
93 points Vinous: "A fascinating 40-year-old spirit – Speyside by way of the tropics. Expressive aromas and flavors of both fleshy exotic fruit and salty sea air reminiscent of Scotch, plus a healthy dose of rancio. On the palate, it’s expansive and amiable, but followed by a long, serious, very dry finish full of astringent grilled walnut. Unique, but possibly a little confounding. (41% abv) (JW)" (09/2019) K&L Notes: There is not a single cognac producer that exemplifies the importance of terroir more than the line up from Dudognon. Grand champagne, ...

Dudognon "Vieille Reserve" Cognac (750ml)
Top Pick!
95 points Vinous: "Age makes all the difference in Grande Champagne, and at 20 years old, this Cognac has begun to show its elegance and depth. Pronounced aromas of dried rose, peach jam, marmalade, toasted nuts and the beginning of rancio glide softly on to a palate of baked, spiced pear, warm pastry, and a savory note on the finish. My favorite of the Dudognon collection. (40% abv) (JW)" (09/2019) K&L Notes: The Dudognon Family has another winner with their Vielle Reserve 20-year-old cognac. It is exclusively from Ugni Blanc grapes grown in Grande Ch...

91 points Vinous: "Solid, good-value 10-year-old from Grande Champagne. Golden in color, offering bright, warm notes of apricot, plum and orange peel, with toasted oak, baking spice and bit of toffee coming on the palate. But the overall effect is light and lean. (40% abv) (JW) " (09/2019) Wine Spectator: "Cognac Dudognon Réserve Grande Champagne reflects the very core of Grande Champagne's potential in its silky, layered glory. " (12/2014) K&L Notes: The Dudognon family has produced Cognac in the small town of Lignieres-Sonneville since 1776. This r...

For over 15 generations Pierre Gourry and his family have been dedicated to the production of traditional Cognac made entirely by manual means. The small family estate in Segonzac (one of the epicenters of Cognac production) was officially founded in 1619 and still stands today as the oldest estate in the region. This special Overproof three year old was created with cocktails in mind but with zero additives, caramel, or boise, etc. It's incredible to see how pure and well made this spirit is on its own. Notes include vine flowers, honeysuckle, fresh chu...

The Beau family is one of the oldest artisanal Cognac distillers in the Segonzac, the heart of the Grande Champagne region. Samuel Beau started distilling in 1895, bottling and selling his brandies under his own name, which at that time was unusual. To this day, the Beau family still takes meticulous care of their 200 plus acres of Grande Champagne fruit, most of which is Ugni Blanc with a tiny fraction of Colombard. The Hor d' Age is an average of 30 years old. It was rated one of the 130 best spirits in the world from Paul Pacult's Spirits Journal, whi...

In response to growing demand for a cocktail-friendly cognac, Eric Forget, Hine's cellar master, collaborated with the French Bartenders Association to create H by Hine. The selection is a harmonious blend of 20 Cognacs from grapes grown in the Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne, all aged a minimum of four years.

Bach Gabrielsen Tre Kors is a lovely blend of Grande and Petite Champagne (25%) and Fins Bois (75%) grapes. Aged in Limousin oak for a minimum of 2 years, this Cognac takes on a remarkable amber hue despite the minimal usage of caramel and boise additions. The inclusion of young Grande Champagne fruit keeps the spirit extremely bright and fresh providing a lively acidity without sacrificing the rich, round, and soft palate. This combination of little sugar, fruit forward flavors, rich texture, and extraordinarily affordable price, makes this the perfect ...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Light, crisp and mixable if so desired, this brandy is scented with aromas of golden raisin and honey. On the palate, a flash of vanilla sweetness gives way to notes of oak, tea, allspice, leather and cocoa. (KN)" (12/2013) 91 points Vinous: "Pierre Ferrand doesn’t use VS, VSOP, or XO on its labels, but this flagship bottling from Grande Champagne has an average age of around 10 years and is about 10% Colombard along with the Ugni Blanc. Golden honey in color, with a floral nose of violet and rose and a bit of fresh-cut flow...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This pours a bright amber color, with restrained but beautiful aromas of white flowers, orange, peach and honey. On the palate, it's full-bodied, with bitter orange peel and stone fruit flavors, with lingering vanilla and oak. The alcohol feels relatively balanced, but it creeps up on you. This needs dilution, so use it in punches as intended and you'll be fine. *Best Buy* (KN)" (12/2013) K&L Notes: 94 points, "Highly Recommended," from the 2012 Ultimate Spirit Challenge.

This wonderful VS is a benchmark for the category. Open, fresh and fragrant we're definitely on the more fruity and floral side of things, but a tiny hint of stewed apricots and oak spice poke through to give this lovely affordable Grand Champagne cognac the perfect balance. Voyer have owned 1er Cru vineyards in the most prestigious parts of Grand Champagne, Verriere and Ambleville, for 5 generations. While they're known for old ultra rare cognac, they're not ignoring the entry level like so many other producers in the region. They could sell this same E...

99 points Vinous: "One of the prized expressions in Grande Champagne — indeed, in all of Cognac. Aged 35 to 50 years, yet light amber in color. The incredibly complex nose is at first warm and affable, presenting pretty dried flowers, rose petals and roasted walnuts, but as you return to the glass, the aromas open up with a tropical explosion of pineapple, mango and guava. Wows the palate with so much going on at once, both profound and hedonistic. Lots of fiery spice and pepper at first, which is then balanced and rounded out by more opulent tropical fr...

Camus has completely revamped their lineup. This is not just a packaging change, but an actual change in the Cognac itself. In addition to now distilling everything on the lees, they've incorporated a unique technique they've developed over the last two decades in which they take what would be the heads cuts, split it into 20 tiny batches, and then evaluate and add back in the 10 most intensely aromatic portions before barreling. The result is a stunninglly intense aromatic Cognac that is leaps and bounds more complex and enjoyable. The VSOP is elegant a...

94 points Vinous: "It’s rare to find a VSOP made solely from Borderies, and the limited-release Camus Family Reserve is a unique bottling. The nose is lively and complex, offering dried fruit, candied citrus and even notes of pineapple cake, but there’s also a fascinating hint of almost rhum-agricole-like grassiness and burnt sugarcane. Delicate on the palate, featuring dried apricot, orange peel and cinnamon, and notes of struck stone and flint throughout. Beautiful, intriguing VSOP and good value. The Dudognon name is royalty in Cognac. The family began growing grapes in 1776 in the heart of the Grand Champagne zone, and the estate was brought to global prominence after WWII by the legendary Raymond Dudognon. Today his daughter and her husband have capably managed the estate and the spirits to the exacting standards that befit her family's tradition. This bottling made from 100% Folle Blanche is a recent reintroduction to the line. Producer's notes: "Dudognon Folle Blanche Cognac is made from 100% Folle Blanche grapes. We have reintroduced this an...

96 points Vinous: "Delamain’s youngest offering, at 20 to 25 years old, is also one of the standard-bearers of Grande Champagne (the blend was created in the 1920s and hasn’t changed). Light amber, with a delightful nose full of pear, marmalade, quince and orange blossom. The pear and quince carry onto the palate, where a distinctive membrillo-like flavor emerges — a unique note I find in a number of Delamain expressions. There’s gentle spice and warm citrus on the palate, gliding to a long, delicate finish. The definition of elegance. (40% abv) (JW)" (0...

Distillation of eau de vie at Chateau Ravignan dates back officially to at least 1791 during the French Revolution, but by historical account back to 1731. That’s when the ancestor of Josselin de Ravignan purchased the estate and declared on an official record that some of wine made from the property’s grapes would be used for distillation. At that time, however, it wasn’t known as Armagnac. Distilled spirits were used for a number of medicinal purposes, poured into wine for fortification, and given to sailors to help disinfect their water supplies durin...

The house of A. Edmond Audry was founded in 1878 by the great-great-grandfather of the current owner. In the early 1950s, the Audry Company stopped selling cognac. However, some very old stocks were held back in reserve in the hopes that Audry would one day rise again to the fore. That day came in 1978 when Bernard Boisson, a lawyer by training, decided to resurrect the family tradition that had remained dormant for four decades. The family stopped distilling in 1974, so Audry is made from blends of the original reserve and a few lots bought from a small...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Showing bright topaz in the glass, this Cognac entices with rich, concentrated caramel and toffee aromas. Fleetingly sweet on the palate, vanilla, mocha and hazelnut lead into a rounded brown-sugar finish punctuated by clove and orange peel. This easy sipper would be welcome at any dessert table. Made with a blend of Cognacs aged 11–25 years. *Top 100 Spirits of 2017* (KN)" (12/2017)

93 points Vinous: "This experimental blend of seven- to 20-year-old Grande Champagne is finished for 12 to 18 months in Banyuls casks. Light copper in color, it’s bright and fruity, with flavors and aromas of fresh citrus and stone fruit, but there’s significant rancio throughout. Banyuls is all about rancio, so that it makes sense, but the palate is very unique, almost the opposite of what’s expected: the spice and rancio come up front, followed by a finish of raisins and dates. A fascinating and tasty experiment. (42.3% abv) (JW)" (09/2019) K&L Notes...

Finishes elegantly, warm, smooth and more oaky than fruity succulent. Only minor rancio." Right from palate entry the fruit concentration is perfectly balanced by a resiny, cheesy oakiness that blossoms at midpalate along with succulent tastes of raisins, vanilla and butterscotch.
