Cognac

Cognac

Cognac is named after the town of Cognac in France. It's a brandy produced in the region surrounding the town and among our favorite spirits. Three grape varieties are used in making Cognac: Ugni Blanc, Colombard, and Folle Blanche. Charente is divided into different districts with different geological and physical characteristics. A worthy but less famous brother of Cognac, Armagnac is actually much older than Cognac. The first document mentioning it dates from the fifteenth century (1461). It is produced in the region of Gascony. Find Armagnac here.

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "The complex bouquet features scents of holiday spice, vanilla bean, marzipan, candied almond, honey, old sweet oak, and dark toffee. The palate entry is fruity and spirity warm; the midpalate includes tastes of honey, orange peel, baked pear, cinnamon, vanilla, cocoa, and rancio. Finishes as elegantly and assertively as it began." (11/2006) K&L Notes: Delamain Cognac: "This blend of extremely old Grande Champagne cognacs has benefited from maximum barrel ageing. It expresses all the nobility of the truly great eaux-de-vie w...

95 points Vinous: "Age makes all the difference in Grande Champagne, and at 20 years old, this Cognac has begun to show its elegance and depth. Pronounced aromas of dried rose, peach jam, marmalade, toasted nuts and the beginning of rancio glide softly on to a palate of baked, spiced pear, warm pastry, and a savory note on the finish. My favorite of the Dudognon collection. (40% abv) (JW)" (09/2019) K&L Notes: The Dudognon Family has another winner with their Vielle Reserve 20-year-old cognac. It is exclusively from Ugni Blanc grapes grown in Grande Ch...

96-100 points Wine Enthusiast: "The nosing passes find an oaky/nut paste aroma with fruity notes of berries, dried fruit, plums, pears and soft cheese. The palate entry is composed, succulent and honeyed; by midpalate the flavors deepen to include caramel, rancio and orange rind. Finishes beautifully with depth, finesse and maturity." (12/2006) 98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Tesseron family (currently the proprietors of St.-Estèphe’s Lafon-Rochet and Pauillac’s Pontet-Canet) made its fortune in the Cognac business, and it is one of the f...

1992 Comandon Borderies Single Barrel #151 Dry Cellar Cask Strength Cognac (750ml)
Top Pick!
We've discovered a tiny remaining allotment of rare single cask Borderies Cognacs. Barrel #22 and #151 present a particularly interesting comparison. Both were distilled in 1992 and separated at birth. Barrel #22 found its way into a very humid cellar while barrel #151 was aged in a dry cellar. 22 years later they were bottled at cask strength and without chill filtration or coloring/sugar. The result is an incredible study in how Cognac ages and the effects of the aging environment. Barrel #151, aged in a dry environment, shows much more sweet wood infl...

94 points Vinous: "It’s rare to find a VSOP made solely from Borderies, and the limited-release Camus Family Reserve is a unique bottling. The nose is lively and complex, offering dried fruit, candied citrus and even notes of pineapple cake, but there’s also a fascinating hint of almost rhum-agricole-like grassiness and burnt sugarcane. Delicate on the palate, featuring dried apricot, orange peel and cinnamon, and notes of struck stone and flint throughout. Beautiful, intriguing VSOP and good value. (JW)" (09/2019) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This limi...

Bach Gabrielsen Tre Kors is a lovely blend of Grande and Petite Champagne (25%) and Fins Bois (75%) grapes. Aged in Limousin oak for a minimum of 2 years, this Cognac takes on a remarkable amber hue despite the minimal usage of caramel and boise additions. The inclusion of young Grande Champagne fruit keeps the spirit extremely bright and fresh providing a lively acidity without sacrificing the rich, round, and soft palate. This combination of little sugar, fruit forward flavors, rich texture, and extraordinarily affordable price, makes this the perfect ...

The Beau family is one of the oldest artisanal Cognac distillers in the Segonzac, the heart of the Grande Champagne region. Samuel Beau started distilling in 1895, bottling and selling his brandies under his own name, which at that time was unusual. To this day, the Beau family still takes meticulous care of their 200 plus acres of Grande Champagne fruit, most of which is Ugni Blanc with a tiny fraction of Colombard. The Hor d' Age is an average of 30 years old. It was rated one of the 130 best spirits in the world from Paul Pacult's Spirits Journal, whi...

91 points Vinous: "Solid, good-value 10-year-old from Grande Champagne. Golden in color, offering bright, warm notes of apricot, plum and orange peel, with toasted oak, baking spice and bit of toffee coming on the palate. But the overall effect is light and lean. (40% abv) (JW) " (09/2019) Wine Spectator: "Cognac Dudognon Réserve Grande Champagne reflects the very core of Grande Champagne's potential in its silky, layered glory. " (12/2014) K&L Notes: The Dudognon family has produced Cognac in the small town of Lignieres-Sonneville since 1776. This r...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Light, crisp and mixable if so desired, this brandy is scented with aromas of golden raisin and honey. On the palate, a flash of vanilla sweetness gives way to notes of oak, tea, allspice, leather and cocoa. (KN)" (12/2013) 91 points Vinous: "Pierre Ferrand doesn’t use VS, VSOP, or XO on its labels, but this flagship bottling from Grande Champagne has an average age of around 10 years and is about 10% Colombard along with the Ugni Blanc. Golden honey in color, with a floral nose of violet and rose and a bit of fresh-cut flow...

Delamain Pale & Dry XO Grande Champagne Cognac 750ml (Elsewhere $100) (Elsewhere $100)
Back In Stock!
96 points Vinous: "Delamain’s youngest offering, at 20 to 25 years old, is also one of the standard-bearers of Grande Champagne (the blend was created in the 1920s and hasn’t changed). Light amber, with a delightful nose full of pear, marmalade, quince and orange blossom. The pear and quince carry onto the palate, where a distinctive membrillo-like flavor emerges — a unique note I find in a number of Delamain expressions. There’s gentle spice and warm citrus on the palate, gliding to a long, delicate finish. The definition of elegance. (40% abv) (JW)" (0...

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Tesseron family, who made their fortune in Cognac (but are probably best known by wine lovers as the proprietor of Pontet Canet and Lafon Rochet) released tiny quantities of single vintage Cognacs. Although French law does not permit a vintage date to be used, this is all from 1929, and is very limited in availability. I'm not an expert on Cognac, but anything this smooth, silky, potent, and aromatic, is truly great stuff. It is about as ethereal Cognac as anyone could ever hope to drink. (Hedonist's Gazette...

96 points Vinous: "Slightly older than Delamain Pale & Dry, at 30 to 35 years old, this copper-colored XO is even more complex. There’s still orchard fruit, but also beautiful aromas of fresh wildflowers and wet earth. On the palate, it’s richer, rounder and expansive, offering more intense saline and spice notes, but there’s still the delicious note of quince and membrillo at the core, and a finish that goes on forever. 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This pours a bright amber color, with restrained but beautiful aromas of white flowers, orange, peach and honey. On the palate, it's full-bodied, with bitter orange peel and stone fruit flavors, with lingering vanilla and oak. The alcohol feels relatively balanced, but it creeps up on you. This needs dilution, so use it in punches as intended and you'll be fine. *Best Buy* (KN)" (12/2013) K&L Notes: 94 points, "Highly Recommended," from the 2012 Ultimate Spirit Challenge.

96-100 points Wine Enthusiast: "Aromas are ripe and melony, then turn deep with subtle hints of walnut, butter cream, oak and marzipan—a sensational bouquet. Right from palate entry the fruit concentration is perfectly balanced by a resiny, cheesy oakiness that blossoms at midpalate along with succulent tastes of raisins, vanilla and butterscotch. Finishes stately, almost chunky. The touch of rancio in the aftertaste puts it over the top. Gorgeous. (PP)" (06/2006) K&L Notes: Special Order Only! This single barrel of eau-de-vie was acquired by Nicolas Palazzi over 10 years ago. It was already at least 10 years of age at the time with some eau-de-vie slightly older, around 15 years old, all distilled at a renowned single estate. With the help of the incredibly knowledgable Jean-Noel Pelletan, a local artisanal cooper, Nicolas spent the next ten years researching age old techniques to bring the most out of this cask. Pelletan has an encyclopedic knowledge of all things cognac and a vast collection of historic technical manuscripts. It's the secret...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Showing bright topaz in the glass, this Cognac entices with rich, concentrated caramel and toffee aromas. Fleetingly sweet on the palate, vanilla, mocha and hazelnut lead into a rounded brown-sugar finish punctuated by clove and orange peel. This easy sipper would be welcome at any dessert table. Made with a blend of Cognacs aged 11–25 years. *Top 100 Spirits of 2017* (KN)" (12/2017)

In response to growing demand for a cocktail-friendly cognac, Eric Forget, Hine's cellar master, collaborated with the French Bartenders Association to create H by Hine. 93 points Vinous: "This experimental blend of seven- to 20-year-old Grande Champagne is finished for 12 to 18 months in Banyuls casks. Light copper in color, it’s bright and fruity, with flavors and aromas of fresh citrus and stone fruit, but there’s significant rancio throughout. Banyuls is all about rancio, so that it makes sense, but the palate is very unique, almost the opposite of what’s expected: the spice and rancio come up front, followed by a finish of raisins and dates. A fascinating and tasty experiment. (42.3% abv) (JW)" (09/2019) K&L Notes...

The new bottling from Maison Ferrand celebrates the 10 generations of artisans and viticulturalists who have devoted their lives to the great brandy of the Charentes. Inspired by Mademoiselle Henriette, who was one of the few surviving members of the Ferrand family when Alexander Gabrielle (owner of Maison Ferrand) met her in 2014. The Ferrand's are renowned for making cognac around the town of Segonzac and Mademoiselle Henriette was the aged owner of one of the family's venerable estates. Maison Ferrand, with her blessing, purchased the estate after her...

The house of A. Edmond Audry was founded in 1878 by the great-great-grandfather of the current owner. In the early 1950s, the Audry Company stopped selling cognac. However, some very old stocks were held back in reserve in the hopes that Audry would one day rise again to the fore. That day came in 1978 when Bernard Boisson, a lawyer by training, decided to resurrect the family tradition that had remained dormant for four decades. The family stopped distilling in 1974, so Audry is made from blends of the original reserve and a few lots bought from a small...

Finishes elegantly, warm, smooth and more oaky than fruity succulent. Only minor rancio."
