92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This delicious white shows the surprising potential of native grape Catarratto when grown and vinified with care and precision. Opening with delicate scents of spring blossom and grapefruit along with an inviting whiff of bread dough, the savory palate features white peach, green melon and a note of white almond. Crisp acidity and a tangy mineral note suggesting oyster shell give it a bright, mouthwatering close. *Editors’ Choice* (KO)" (09/2020) K&L Notes: Fruity, dry, saline refresher from Sicily. When wine critic Neal Mar...

Aged in stainless steel for six months prior to release, the Ibidini Nero d'Avola is a classic example of the no-nonsense, broad appeal of this varietal. Fresh and vibrant red fruits form the profile, making this an ideal pairing with simple meat dishes and a variety of charcuterie.

From the importer: "Graci, situated on the north slope of Mount Etna at Passopisciaro, is found in an area where viticulture dates back several thousand years. Their vineyards sit at an altitude between 600 and 1,000 meters above sea level. Planting density ranges from 6,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare. Many of the vines are still on original rootstock, ungrafted, having never been affected by the phylloxera scourge thanks to the unique nature of the volcanic soils. At Graci, young Alberto Aiello Graci remains steadfast in his respect for local traditio...

92 points James Suckling: "There’s some lovely fresh-sage character to complement notes of blueberry compote and citrus, together with crushed violets and lavender. Medium to full body, some bright acidity, firm tannins and a bright finish. Always excellent. From organically grown grapes. " (08/2018) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 SP68 is a terrific rendition of this special wine. This was not an easy growing season, but Arianna Occhipinti has harnessed the scorching heat to produce an elegantly open and accessible wine. The wine of...

The Mothia winery is in the most westerly portion of Sicily in the city of Marsala. This 100% Nero d'Avola comes from a vineyard whose toes touch the Mediterranean, giving it a bit of saline character. The winery produces both whites and reds as well as Marsala.

94 points Vinous: "Bright red-ruby. Perfumed aromas of violet, red cherry, raspberry, Mediterranean herbs and thyme. Then dense but juicy, with harmonious acidity nicely lifting and extending the juicy, very pure, superripe red cherry and berry flavors on the long, mineral-tinged finish. Despite its ripeness, the wine comes across as rather sleek and truly beautiful (the 2015 vintage was much less hot in Pachino than in the rest of Sicily). To be sure of my assessment, I tasted this specific wine four different times, scoring it 95, 90, 93 and 94, and so...

Paolo Caciorgna is a Tuscan winemaker working with some fascinating parcels on the slopes of Mount Etna. This Nerello Mascalese from volcanic soils is pure Sicilian delight, with bright cherry fruit and a smoky minerality. It offers exceptional value for the price and is incredibly food friendly — we also love to put just a slight chill on it for enjoying during the summer months.

93 points James Suckling: "Pretty strawberries, rose petals, fruit tea, redcurrants and hibiscus. Subtly tannic with finely tuned acidity and bright fruit throughout, this is a very endearing style of Etna red that will please if drunk now." (11/2019) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Graci 2017 Etna Rosso shows those distinctive volcanic notes that you always find in the best wines from the Sicilian volcano. That volcanic signature permeates this wine and appears beside wildflower, forest berry, grilled herb and dried cranberry. The wine s...

93 points Vinous: "Bright red. Inviting, perfumed aromas of violet, pomegranate, nutmeg and cilantro. Then lovely and lively in the mouth too, with similar flavors to the aromas. Finishes long and clean, with a vibrant peppery quality. Very different from the 2017 Frappato, but I can see how both will have their respective fans, so I’ll be magnanimous and won’t pick sides. (ID)" (08/2019)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico is a very nice wine that shows a smooth texture and a delicate approach that grows in intensity. There are small-berry aromas with cassis, wild raspberry and dried blueberry, which would spruce up any pasta like a Sicilian pasta alla Norma. A blend of 40% Frappato and 60% Nero d'Avola aged in oak barrels for 12 months, the wine is delicate and smooth, with tiny steps that go the long haul. The tannins are well integrated and give the wine a firm, upstanding backbone. (ML)" ...

A flagship Etna Bianco bottling, Monica Larner writes of Benanti for Wine Advocate: "Giuseppe Benanti's sons Antonio and Salvino have increasingly taken on managerial roles at the family winery and have done so with a powerful sense of charge and purpose. The generational shift at Benanti is impressive and I was very happy to visit with both father and sons during my last trip to Etna. They have streamlined production, removing some lesser-performing wines. At the same time, they restructured their vineyard holdings, selling off property and buying two h...

The Amara Amaro d'Arancia Rossa is easily the best amaro we have in stock, bringing new life to a category that was just beginning to get a bit saturated. Made in Sicily from blood oranges grown near the volcanic slopes of Mt. Etna, it's a citrus-dominated liqueur with only a slight bitterness that marries well with hints of baking spice. The finish is like the purest expression of citrus peel in a spirit, giving the Amara a versatility that is simply off the charts. You can sip it after dinner as a digestivo, add soda water to make a spritz, mix it into...

94 points Vinous: "Deep red. Perfumed violet, rose and red cherry. Profoundly rich and round but still very young, with chewy, slightly tough tannins and lots of vibrant acidity extending the mineral red cherry flavors on the back end. Made from the south-eastern slope of Mount Etna from very old vines planted at about 500 meters above sea level. Well done; this is potentially very great. (ID) 94+" (08/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Etna Rosso Serra della Contessa (made with 90% Nerello Mascalese and 10% Nerello Cappuccio) com...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Etna Rosso Arcurìa shows rich textural fiber and a compact core of red and purple fruits. Those fruit-driven elements are enhanced by flint, crushed stone, spice, tar and powdered licorice. I notice that Alberto Graci's wines from the not-always-easy 2017 vintage show better balance and tannic harmony that most. The wine is ready to drink straight out of the gate, but it could also be put aside for more aging. (ML)" (10/2019) 93 points James Suckling: "Lots of dried cherries, red plums, walnuts and lig...

95 points Vinous: "Deep vivid red. Brooding aromas and flavors hint at pencil shavings, red currant jelly, red cherry nectar, yellow flowers, coffee and herbs. Dense and tactile but also very fruity in the mouth, expressing a noteworthy steely quality. In fact, much more steely than the 2014 Serra della Contessa, and so less immediately juicy/fruity but rather more taut and classically austere at this present time of development. Ought to age splendidly. From very old vines grown at 750 meters above sea level on the northern slopes of Etna. (ID) 95+" (08...

92 points Vinous: "Moderately saturated red. Musky, flinty aromas and flavors of red cherry, cherry skin, flowers and aromatic herbs; you can really smell and taste the Frappato. Rich and full, offering considerable minerality to its precise mouthfeel that finishes with round tannins, a hint of mint and very good length. A blend of 60% Nero d’Avola and 40% Frappato, but this utterly lovely, charming and very floral wine tastes like it has more than that. 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Riserva Don Antonio delivers an explosive bouquet that is comprised of equal parts dark fruit, spice and savory tobacco. This wine sees 20 days of fermentation on the skins and finishes up with malolactic fermentation in steel vats. It then ages in French barrique for 12 months. It's a standard winemaking approach for an exceptional expression of Sicily's most important red grape. This is a medium to full-bodied red with ample texture and roundness on the finish. Do you feel that 15%...

93 points James Suckling: "Aromas of dried fruit, orange peel and stems with some flowers. Full body. Round, juicy tannins and a flavorful finish with just a hint of vanilla. Needs time to come together. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink now, but better after 2020." (11/2019)

Azienda COS on the extreme southeastern tip of Sicily is an estate with an undisputed mastery of the Sicilian Cerasuolo style. The "normale" Cerasuolo routinely lands high marks and praise from the leading wine press each vintage, but the Delle Fontane takes this obsession with quality a step further. The estate employs a "natural winemaking" philosophy with this wine and it's produced in exceedingly small numbers, usually on the order of less than 5,000 bottles. Composed of 40% Frappato and 60% Nero d'Avola.

93 points James Suckling: "Intense aromas of sliced lemons, spices and minerals. Full body. Dense palate. Focused and poised. Solid balance and energy. Drink now." (11/2017) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is a blend of 90% Carricante that has been enhanced with 10% Riesling. It is amazing how much range, dimension, depth and overall definition that small percentage of Riesling brings to the table. These two grapes find remarkable harmony in the 2017 Sicilia Carricante Eruzione 1614. The clarity and precise nature of those linear and alm...

2017 Donnafugata "Ben Ryè" Passito di Pantelleria (375ml)
Back In Stock!
Ian D'Agata writes: "A huge estate, Donnafugata manages to combine quantity with quality in a way that very few (and I mean very few) other Italian estates are capable of. Donnafugata currently produces 2.5 million bottles, 1.3 million of which are their highly successful entry-level wines, such as Damarino, Anthilia and Sedara; the other 1.2 million bottles are divided up among 17 different labels, some of which are at the top of Italy’s wine quality hierarchy. And interestingly enough, the estate continues to launch new wines made from different grapes...

Monica Larner writes: "Over the many years I have tasted the wines of COS, I don’t remember a lineup with as many stunning, standout wines as what is available now. COS was founded in 1980 by three friends whose last name initials spell out C-O-S: Giambattista Cilia, Giusto Occhipinti and Cirino Strano. Giusto is the face of the winery today. From the start, COS sparked a revolution on two fronts. First, the quality of the wines produced lent untold credibility to the Cerasuolo di Vittoria appellation in southern Sicily and to the Frappato grape. Today, ...

The Pellegrino company was founded in 1880, and remains in the family to this day (seven generations), proving it one of the great families of Sicilian wine. Known for their long history in and deep knowledge of making Marsala, the base of Amaro Pellegrino. The amaro is produced from a blend of Sicilian herbs, and blended with distilled wine sourced exclusively from grapes grown in the Marsala DOC. It's then aged more than five years in Slovenian oak casks ranging in size form 1,300-2,100 gallons.

95 points Decanter: "These pre-phylloxera vines are up to 100 years old and grown at 900m. Raspberry aromas infuse the nose, which is rich yet lifted and elegant, with great purity of fruit. It’s suave and very concentrated with imposing tannins, but not too extracted. Structured and still a bit severe, it has potential. Long. (SB)" (05/2019) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Here is a wine I always look forward to tasting. The 2015 Etna Rosso Barbagalli is made with extraordinary pre-phylloxera vines that range up to 120 years old. You definit...
