The Mothia winery is in the most westerly portion of Sicily in the city of Marsala. This 100% Nero d'Avola comes from a vineyard whose toes touch the Mediterranean, giving it a bit of saline character. The winery produces both whites and reds as well as Marsala.

2017 Paolo Caciorgna "Guardoilvento" Etna Rosso
Top Pick!
97 points James Suckling: "Aromas of currants, smoke, orange peel, geraniums and hints of eucalyptus. It’s medium-bodied and juicy with lots of gently bitter citrus zest and spice. Sleek, refined tannins. Complex, yet so easy to drink." (12/2020)

The Amara Amaro d'Arancia Rossa is easily the best amaro we have in stock, bringing new life to a category that was just beginning to get a bit saturated. Made in Sicily from blood oranges grown near the volcanic slopes of Mt. Etna, it's a citrus-dominated liqueur with only a slight bitterness that marries well with hints of baking spice. The finish is like the purest expression of citrus peel in a spirit, giving the Amara a versatility that is simply off the charts. You can sip it after dinner as a digestivo, add soda water to make a spritz, mix it into...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Etna Rosso Arcurìa shows rich textural fiber and a compact core of red and purple fruits. Those fruit-driven elements are enhanced by flint, crushed stone, spice, tar and powdered licorice. I notice that Alberto Graci's wines from the not-always-easy 2017 vintage show better balance and tannic harmony that most. The wine is ready to drink straight out of the gate, but it could also be put aside for more aging. (ML)" (10/2019) 93 points James Suckling: "Lots of dried cherries, red plums, walnuts and lig...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Riserva Don Antonio delivers an explosive bouquet that is comprised of equal parts dark fruit, spice and savory tobacco. This wine sees 20 days of fermentation on the skins and finishes up with malolactic fermentation in steel vats. It then ages in French barrique for 12 months. It's a standard winemaking approach for an exceptional expression of Sicily's most important red grape. This is a medium to full-bodied red with ample texture and roundness on the finish. Do you feel that 15%...

A flagship Etna Bianco bottling, Monica Larner writes of Benanti for Wine Advocate: "Giuseppe Benanti's sons Antonio and Salvino have increasingly taken on managerial roles at the family winery and have done so with a powerful sense of charge and purpose. The generational shift at Benanti is impressive and I was very happy to visit with both father and sons during my last trip to Etna. They have streamlined production, removing some lesser-performing wines. At the same time, they restructured their vineyard holdings, selling off property and buying two h...

93 points James Suckling: "Aromas of dried fruit, orange peel and stems with some flowers. Full body. Round, juicy tannins and a flavorful finish with just a hint of vanilla. Needs time to come together. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink now, but better after 2020." (11/2019)

94 points Vinous: "Deep red. Perfumed violet, rose and red cherry. Profoundly rich and round but still very young, with chewy, slightly tough tannins and lots of vibrant acidity extending the mineral red cherry flavors on the back end. Made from the south-eastern slope of Mount Etna from very old vines planted at about 500 meters above sea level. Well done; this is potentially very great. (ID) 94+" (08/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Etna Rosso Serra della Contessa (made with 90% Nerello Mascalese and 10% Nerello Cappuccio) com...

92 points Vinous: "Moderately saturated red. Musky, flinty aromas and flavors of red cherry, cherry skin, flowers and aromatic herbs; you can really smell and taste the Frappato. Rich and full, offering considerable minerality to its precise mouthfeel that finishes with round tannins, a hint of mint and very good length. A blend of 60% Nero d’Avola and 40% Frappato, but this utterly lovely, charming and very floral wine tastes like it has more than that. (ID)" (08/2019) 91 points James Suckling: "Aromas of bright berries and orange peel with some ash u...

Monica Larner writes: "Over the many years I have tasted the wines of COS, I don’t remember a lineup with as many stunning, standout wines as what is available now. COS was founded in 1980 by three friends whose last name initials spell out C-O-S: Giambattista Cilia, Giusto Occhipinti and Cirino Strano. Giusto is the face of the winery today. From the start, COS sparked a revolution on two fronts. First, the quality of the wines produced lent untold credibility to the Cerasuolo di Vittoria appellation in southern Sicily and to the Frappato grape. Today, ...

93 points James Suckling: "Intense aromas of sliced lemons, spices and minerals. Full body. Dense palate. Focused and poised. Solid balance and energy. Drink now." (11/2017) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is a blend of 90% Carricante that has been enhanced with 10% Riesling. It is amazing how much range, dimension, depth and overall definition that small percentage of Riesling brings to the table. These two grapes find remarkable harmony in the 2017 Sicilia Carricante Eruzione 1614. The clarity and precise nature of those linear and alm...

Azienda COS on the extreme southeastern tip of Sicily is an estate with an undisputed mastery of the Sicilian Cerasuolo style. The "normale" Cerasuolo routinely lands high marks and praise from the leading wine press each vintage, but the Delle Fontane takes this obsession with quality a step further. The estate employs a "natural winemaking" philosophy with this wine and it's produced in exceedingly small numbers, usually on the order of less than 5,000 bottles. Composed of 40% Frappato and 60% Nero d'Avola.
