Composed of Tempranillo from Pedrosa de Duero, and then aged in all French oak barrels (1/3 new, 1/3 one year-old, 1/3 two year-old), this Ribera shows dark cherry and red plum fruited aromas. Approachable now, it is also serious enough to age a while in your cellar. Pago de los Capellanes is one of the most consistent producers in all of Ribera del Duero. They always seem to make very good quality, fresh, nicely structured wine, with tasty fruit, bright acidity and well balanced oak. This is a very solid Ribera del Duero for the money.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This project, from a large estate in Ribera del Duero, has the gifted Danish winemaker, Peter Sisseck (of Pingus fame), as the winemaker. Produced from extremely low yields (15-20 hectoliters per hectare), this offering is a blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. This wine is a sexy, exotic wine that could be called Spanish Pomerol. The 1995 Crianza (14.6% alcohol) presents a saturated plum color, followed by a knock-out nose of melted chocolate and blackberry fruit, a lush, voluptuous texture, low acidity, and gobs of glycerin and fruit. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1994 Vega Sicilia "Unico" Ribera del Duero (96DC, 96RP, 96WS, 95ST, 95WE, 94JG). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1994 Unico is a blend of 80% Tinto Fino, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot (presumably 2% is unknown varieties) that was picked from September 28. It is very intense with notes of raspberry, wild strawberry and mulberry with sensational minerality and vigor. There is a Margaux-like florality to the 1994 that blossom with aeration. The palate is rounded and supple on the entry with great weight and backbone. There is real substance here, similar to the 1996. It expands in the mouth with ravishing notes of blackberry, strawberry, citrus lemon, orange peel and a touch of cedar. There is enormous weight on the finish, a behemoth of a Unico. This is very potent, but it still requires several years in bottle. (NM)" (08/2012)
