Port

Port

Port is a fortified wine made by stopping the fermentation with brandy. The result is a heavy sweet wine, most often red, that is dense, rich and high in alcohol. Port is made all over the world with some great results in Australia and South Africa, but the most famous of these dessert wines come from Portugal. The great port houses (or lodges) below are located along the Duoro River on the steep slate slopes high above the valley floor. There are several styles of port, including Ruby, Tawny, Vintage Character, Late Bottle Vintage, Colheita, and Single Quinta. Vintage ports are made in special years that the houses declare. 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. (RP)" (01/1989) 91 points Wine Spectator: "This was never a great Graham, but it's outstanding quality nonetheless. Medium ruby-red. Aromas of milk chocolate, plum, m...

1994 Taylor Vintage Port
Top Pick!
100 points James Suckling: "This is, to date, the greatest Vintage Port ever from here. It overwhelmed me years ago when I tasted it from barrel, but only now is it crossing gradually into its drinking window. The intensity is still mind-boggling here, with sweet-and-sour notes as well as mounds of clay. There are violets lurking somewhere too. A full-bodied, medium sweet and sublime Vintage Port, showing forest fruits and freshly picked blackberries on the palate in the form of a creamy, focused and tannic texture." (10/2014) 100 points Wine Spectator...

93 points John Gilman: "I have had this wine a number of times out of half bottle over the last few years, and it is a lovely drink in the smaller-sized format. However, in 750 ml. it is not even remotely near ready. The nose is deep and still rather reticent in this size, reluctantly offering up a fine mix of cassis, black cherry, tobacco, a bit of tar, violets, smoke and spicy wood. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and very well-delineated, with a rock solid core of fruit currently buttoned up tight behind a wall of ripe tannin. The finish is long...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Graham is the undisputed star and kingpin of the 1985 vintage ports. Yes, it is made in a sweeter style than the other ports, but it is a fabulous wine because of a dazzling level of black-cherry fruit, an enormous structure, and staggering depth, dimension, and length. (RP)" (01/1989) 96 points Wine Spectator: "Dark color, with intense aromas of blackberry, licorice and hints of flowers. Full-bodied, lightly sweet, with superrefined tannins. Long and caressing. Very youthful. Will improve for a long time. This...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV 10 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in 2014 with 105.23 grams per liter of residual sugar. Easily the 10 with the most weight in the Fladgate group's lineup this issue, it is a rather powerful 10 year old Tawny with plenty of pop, the biggest and baddest of the trio (Fonseca, Croft and this). There is very fine concentration of flavor for a 10 year old Tawny. If I had a quibble, the alcohol shows at times, especially early on and rather notably when drunk a little too warm. (Around 60 degrees Fahrenheit is ...

90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Opaque deep black colour. The nose is sweet and raisiny, quite fragrant and perfumed. The palate is spicy, peppery, quite "bullish" in a way. The Niepport shows more restraint and balance. Slightly dry on the finish - bit this is still an excellent port that should last another decade at least. (NM)" (06/2004) Wine Spectator: "Refined and well crafted. Dark purple, with fresh floral and grapey aromas and flavors. Medium body, medium sweetness and firm tannins. (JS)" (07/1994) K&L Notes: 93 points, Roy Hers...

99 points Wine Spectator: "Powerful, refined and luscious, with a surplus of dark plum, kirsch and cassis flavors that are unctuous and long. Shows plenty of grip, presenting a long, full finish, filled with Asian spice and raspberry tart accents. Rich and chocolaty. One for the ages. Best from 2030 through 2060. *Wine of the Year 2014, Collectibles* (KM)" (02/2014) 96-98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Dow Vintage Port was made from no less than 44 separate ferments from finest fruit sourced from Quinta do Bomfim (35% of the blend), Qu...

94 points Wine Spectator: "Dark ruby. Subtle and rich aromas of prune, spice, juniper berry and leaves. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with big round tannins. Lasts for minutes on the palate. Still very young. It's lost its youthful toughness, but give it a little more time. (JM, Web Only-2008)" 90 points Vinous: "Medium ruby. Enticing aromas of cassis, lilac, licorice and mint. Rich, sweet and nicely concentrated; floral and dark berry flavors are fresh and pure. Stylish and seamless. Finishes with even, fine tannins and very good persistence. (ST)" (05...

A wonderfully delicious Dry White Port that has a spicy, nutty character that perfectly complements its roasted fruit flavors. While its nice with dessert, we think it makes an excellent aperitif as well.
Price: $18.99

Wine Spectator: "Great nutty aromas come from the glass and follow into the palate of this sweeter style of white Port. It is rich, packed with almonds and a tangy orange zest edge." (08/2010)

Barros is a deservedly popular brand in Portugal, known for all of their fine ports, but as is the case for most Portuguese owned houses, most especially for their tawnies and colheitas. They also make this wonderful white port, a drier style compared to others such as Ramos Pinto. There are yellow fruits and a bit of sweetness to be sure, but also an interesting savory component that would make this a crisp, nicely balanced fortified aperitif, or even an interesting Port to play around with for mixing cocktails.

93 points Wine Spectator: "A superb achievement from a very underrated year. Deep dark ruby-purple, with rich floral and violet aromas, full-bodied, with masses of strawberry flavors, full tannins and a long finish. 100 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is going to be a major, impressive wine. All the elements are there: ripe blackberry fruit, powerful acidity, dense tannins and spice. It has the structure to live on for decades. Drink from 2030. (RV)" (12/2019) 95 points Wine Spectator: "Warm and lush in style, featuring blueberry and açaí berry reduction flavors that glide over melted licorice and melted chocolate notes, revealing a seductive fruitcake hint on the rich finish. The grip of the vintage hangs in the background, resulting in a showy, fruit-bomb style. T...

Jancis Robinson: "Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz from Vinha da Pisca, Vale do Pinhão and Ferrão. Vines more than 70 years old. A difficult vintage with lower sugar levels in the grapes at harvest. Aged 4–6 years in large wooden vats. Deep crimson. Intense dark-red fruit with deep spice, almost Christmassy in cinnamon and nutmeg. Cherries and celery salt. Finest of dry tannins, so elegant and harmonious. This is a great way to enjoy a vintage-style port without having to wait forever. Gent...

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Colheita Tawny Port was bottled in 2018 with a long cork and approximately 90 grams of residual sugar. Showing a bit more firmness than the 2007 but not quite its seductive texture, this an easy tawny that is slightly deeper than a typical 10 but not really approaching a 20 in quality. Which you like better is mostly a matter of taste, but I liked the little bit of extra concentration here, as compared to the 2007. (MS)" (07/2018) Jancis Robinson: "Winter 2003/04 was very dry but fears about lack of su...

(RM)" 90 points Wine & Spirits: "A finely blended Port, this has a bristle of tannins up front, melding their chocolate richness with dried fruit flavors, ending clean and sweet. The wine’s lasting spice places it with a savory pumpkin pie." (12/2017) Wine Enthusiast: "This familiar brand exhibits the lush Fonseca style. Tannins ...

95 points James Suckling: "The aromas to this beautiful tawny port are saturated with burnt orange peel, caramel, candied fruit and hints of honey-coated nuts. Full-bodied, very fruity and dense with intense nut and mahogany flavors. Hints of sultanas, chocolate and coffee. Extremely creamy, long and flavorful. Delicious all the way. Better served slightly chilled. " (06/2019) 94 points Wine & Spirits: "A complex and satisfying Tawny, this sits on the cusp of maturity with freshness continuing to infuse its deepening flavors. That freshness arrives in ...

91 points Wine & Spirits: "Light amber-tawny in color, this wine is delicately balanced between freshness and age. There’s brisk, tart peach flavor along with more mature tones of pale berries and woodsy mushrooms. Hints of tobacco smoke add to the wine’s elegance." (12/2015) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Racy and fresh, with detailed green fig, dried cherry, incense and hazelnut notes. Offers a long, focused finish. (JM)" (06/2018) Wine Enthusiast: "This hits the sweet spot between fruit and wood-aging flavors. The red fruit tones have just begun to ra...

92 points Wine & Spirits: "The Amorim family purchased this quinta in 1999, a prime site on the north bank of the Douro, just downriver from Pinhão. Having made their fortune in the cork business, they were in a position to hold this stock back and are now releasing a fully mature Vintage Port at a price that belies its age. The texture of the tannins brings to mind polished leather while the fruit feels more like supple velvet. Plummy and relatively light bodied, even as it’s chocolate-rich, this wine still has freshness and power, mellowed into strawbe...

100 points James Suckling: "The is a phenomenal young port that showcases flowers, stones, black olives and dried mushrooms on the nose. The polished and finesse are second to none. Full yet so refined and dense with a compact and gorgeous mouthfeel. Goes on for minutes. Hard not to drink now, but this will seemingly live forever." (01/2017) 100 points Wine Spectator: "Amazing aromas of lilac, violet, crushed blueberry and mineral that turn to black pepper and spices follow through to a full-bodied, medium-sweet palate, with a long, chewy finish. 100 points Wine Spectator: "Hold on to your hat. This is the best Fonseca since 1977, and it's probably even better than that classic vintage--more like the breathtaking 1948. Mind-blowing, with masses of color, aroma and fruit flavor. Smells like fermenting berries, boasting loads of crushed grape, violet and berry character. Big, full-bodied and very sweet, with tons of tannins and a sweet finish. Tannic and huge, it's a long-term, great Port. *No. 1 Top 100 Wines of 1997, Cellar Selection* (JS)" (04/1997) 98 points Decanter: "Tight knit – not giving...

2017 Fonseca Vintage Port (375ml)
Back In Stock!
96-98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Vintage Port, not quite bottled when seen but the final blend, is a field blend (with typical grapes like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca) aged for approximately 20 months in used French oak. It comes in with 98 grams of residual sugar, a little drier on paper than its Taylor sibling this year. Sappy and sensational in flavor and fruit, this seemingly has moderate tannins around the edges on first taste, velvety texture and a long finish. Despite the first...

93 points Wine Spectator: "Pretty, with bergamot, date, fig and caramelized peach flavors gliding through, framed by a caramel note that lingers on the polished finish. This gains intensity as it opens in the glass. Lovely. (JM)" (04/2018)

Peppery, spicy aromas, and a huge mid-palate rich with dark, concentrated fruit. Excellent value! 97 points Robert Parker: "This colossal vintage port reveals a nearly opaque black/purple color, and an explosive nose of jammy black fruits, licorice, chocolate, and spices. Extremely full-bodied and unctuously-textured, this multi-layered, enormously-endowed port reveals a finish that lasts for over a minute. It is a magnificent port that will age well for 30-40 years." From the importer: "Built by a family of winemakers from the Douro, in 1751, Ferreira possessed a rich tradition and a prominent role in the history of Porto Wine. A legendary woman with a unique personality, who became a myth and a symbol of strength, facing the adversities of nineteenth-century Douro."

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. Superripe, exotic aromas of cassis and woodsmoke. Incredibly sweet and viscous on the palate; very concentrated, deep and strong in extract. A fruit bomb of a single-quinta port. Extremely long and powerful. This can't stand comparison with the great '94 Graham, but on its own it's a compelling and more easily approachable young port. (ST)" (04/1998) Wine Spectator: "Plenty of plummy, grapey aromas and flavors in this young vintage Port. Medium- to full-bodied, with medium, fine tannins ...

95-96 points James Suckling: "This shows first class structure and length. It's full-bodied and lightly sweet with fabulous length and power. It starts off slowly and builds on the palate with great blackberry, mineral and slate character." (09/2014) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Guimaraens Vintage Port was bottled in 2014. It comes in at 103 grams per liter of residual sugar. Surprisingly powerful, this opens as a brooding Port. It isn't so appealing just now, admittedly, as the astringency comes to the fore pretty quickly and som...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An under-rated producer, Smith-Woodhouse has turned out a port with an impressively saturated dark ruby/purple color. This powerful port is moderately sweet, forward, rich, and full-bodied, with nicely integrated alcohol and tannin. While it is not one of the vintage's blockbusters, it should be ready to drink in 3-5 years and keep for 15-20. Anticipated maturity: 1999-2018. This lush, medium to full-bodied, juicy, succulent effort will last for 15+ years. (RP)" (10/2002) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Full medium ruby. 100 points James Suckling: "OMG. This is really the most amazing young Taylor's I have ever tasted. Full-bodied and lightly sweet with super power and intensity. So racy and focused. Yet this has such muscle and intensity. Needs at least eight years to show you everything it has to offer. Drink in 2025." (05/2018) 98 points Wine Enthusiast: "Ripe, structured while also fruity, this intense, perfumed Port is opulent while also elegant. Its tannins and great fruit are finely integrated and are rich with potential. Black fruits, berries and a juicy aftert...
