Port

Port

Port is a fortified wine made by stopping the fermentation with brandy. The result is a heavy sweet wine, most often red, that is dense, rich and high in alcohol. Port is made all over the world with some great results in Australia and South Africa, but the most famous of these dessert wines come from Portugal. The great port houses (or lodges) below are located along the Duoro River on the steep slate slopes high above the valley floor. There are several styles of port, including Ruby, Tawny, Vintage Character, Late Bottle Vintage, Colheita, and Single Quinta. Vintage ports are made in special years that the houses declare. 1997 Dow's Vintage Port

95 points Wine Spectator: "Warm and inviting, with a worn leather feel to the mix of dried anise, espresso, bittersweet cocoa, steeped fig and mulled currant notes, which move seamlessly together through the buckwheat-edged finish. There's plenty here to like now, but this has ample energy for additional development. (JM, Web Only-2017)" 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Mouthfilling and round, without any sharp edges, but this wine remains extremely firm and dense, with several decades of life ahead of it. Dried fig, chocolate and black licorice flavors only ...

1977 Dow's Vintage Port

97 points James Suckling: "This is really glorious and refined, offering a polished and creamy texture. Complex aromas and flavors with cream, dried fruit and nuts. Medium body. Very beautiful. A refined and glorious 1977 now. Real deal. " (01/2017) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is an extraordinary house that seems to have been particularly successful with its vintage port since 1977. The 1977, still a baby, is fabulously scented, very rich and concentrated, and has a potential longevity of at least another 30-50 years. (RP)" (01/1989) ...

1977 Graham's Vintage Port

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. (RP)" (01/1989) 91 points Wine Spectator: "This was never a great Graham, but it's outstanding quality nonetheless. Medium ruby-red. Aromas of milk chocolate, plum, m ...

1985 Graham's Vintage Port

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Graham is the undisputed star and kingpin of the 1985 vintage ports. Yes, it is made in a sweeter style than the other ports, but it is a fabulous wine because of a dazzling level of black-cherry fruit, an enormous structure, and staggering depth, dimension, and length. (RP)" (01/1989) 96 points Wine Spectator: "Dark color, with intense aromas of blackberry, licorice and hints of flowers. Full-bodied, lightly sweet, with superrefined tannins. Long and caressing. Very youthful. Will improve for a long time. This ...

1977 Taylor Vintage Port

98 points Vinous: "The 1977 Taylor's Vintage Port is initially tight and conservative on the nose: strawberry, baked cherry, tobacco and wild hedgerow notes emerging but remaining tight-lipped. This needs a good decant! The palate is endowed with depth and concentration, very well balanced with an attractive crispness. Perhaps you could argue that it is a "linear" and more "correct" Taylor's compared to the 1970 and lacks some charm. But there is immense complexity here so it is more a case of a Port demanding a very long maturation in bottle. Tasted in ...

Croft "430th anniversary" Port

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV 430th Anniversary Ruby Reserve Port is a blend of various grapes and field blends to reach an average age of 2.5 years old. It comes in with 90 grams of residual sugar. Although a non-vintage wine, this is a one-off, a single bottling for the 430th anniversary. This is chock-full of lifted fruit and flavor. Bright, fresh and pretty delicious, it is an easy drinker that nonetheless has some structure, although that is not the point. It is, of course, lighter styled, perhaps even a bit lighter than a Fonseca Bin 27. T ...

1977 Fonseca Vintage Port

100 points James Suckling: "Vintage Port doesn't seem like the right wine in the middle of the summer but I had an Amarone producer for dinner the other night in Tuscany and he had never drunk a wine from his birth year. He was lucky enough to have been born in 1977 - a great Port year! I found a bottle of 1977 Fonseca in my cellar - probably my last. It was absolutely gorgeous. I gave this fortified wine a perfect score in its youth and I think it has finally evolved into its perfection as a mature vintage Port. Here is the tasting note. 1977 Fonseca Vi ...

Warre's "Otima" 10 Year Old Tawny Port (500ml)

91 points Wine & Spirits: "Light amber-tawny in color, this wine is delicately balanced between freshness and age. There’s brisk, tart peach flavor along with more mature tones of pale berries and woodsy mushrooms. Hints of tobacco smoke add to the wine’s elegance." (12/2015) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Racy and fresh, with detailed green fig, dried cherry, incense and hazelnut notes. Offers a long, focused finish. (JM)" (06/2018) Wine Enthusiast: "This hits the sweet spot between fruit and wood-aging flavors. The red fruit tones have just begun to ra ...

Kopke 10-year-old Tawny Port

92 points Wine Spectator: "Subtle, with a perfumy profile of cinnamon, powdered ginger, hazelnut husk and toasted sesame notes leading the way, backed by mouthwatering date and dried fig details and a lengthy finish. Drink now. (JM)" (06/2018) K&L Notes: Sweet, woody, spicy fruitcake and cinnamon reveal themselves on the nose. On the palate, the flavors are wonderfully balanced, no surprise given that the average age of the wine here is actually 15 years and not 10. Since there is no category for 15 year tawnies, Kopke simply chooses to label it as a 1 ...

1985 Taylor Vintage Port

93 points John Gilman: "I have had this wine a number of times out of half bottle over the last few years, and it is a lovely drink in the smaller-sized format. However, in 750 ml. it is not even remotely near ready. The nose is deep and still rather reticent in this size, reluctantly offering up a fine mix of cassis, black cherry, tobacco, a bit of tar, violets, smoke and spicy wood. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and very well-delineated, with a rock solid core of fruit currently buttoned up tight behind a wall of ripe tannin. The finish is long ...

The intensity is still mind-boggling here, with sweet-and-sour notes as well as mounds of clay. There are violets lurking somewhere too. 2011 Warre's Vintage Port (375ml)

97 points Wine & Spirits: "Half of the lot for this wine comes from the Quinta da Cavadinha, Warre’s property on the western bank of the Pinhão River, a relatively cool site facing east. The balance is from Retiro, in the Rio Torto and Telhada, a property in the Douro Superior the Symingtons purchased in 2006. Old-vine mixed plantings make up 40 percent of the blend, lending it the kind of co-fermented complexity that makes this compellingly drinkable, delicious right now, as it will be for at least the next 20 or 30 years. Taylor 20 Year Old Tawny Port

That freshness arrives in bold scents of orange zest and juicy citrus flavors, while the maturity mellows those flavors into layers of Marcona almond, date and sweet oak-smoke notes. It finishes with a hint of schist in the tannins. For fruit and cheese at the end of the meal." Taylor 10 Year Old Tawny Port

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV 10 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in 2014 with 105.23 grams per liter of residual sugar. Easily the 10 with the most weight in the Fladgate group's lineup this issue, it is a rather powerful 10 year old Tawny with plenty of pop, the biggest and baddest of the trio (Fonseca, Croft and this). There is very fine concentration of flavor for a 10 year old Tawny. If I had a quibble, the alcohol shows at times, especially early on and rather notably when drunk a little too warm. 1992 Quinta do Infantado "Estate Bottled" Vintage Port

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There were only 1,000 cases produced of the 1992 Vintage Port, and they are not likely to languish on retailers' shelves. A saturated, black/purple color is followed by a huge, ripe, pure nose of jammy blackberry and cassis fruit that is vaguely reminiscent of such great 1990 Hermitages as Chapoutier's Le Pavillon, Jaboulet's La Chapelle, or Chave's red label Cuvee Cathelin. Awesome concentration, massive body, an unctuous texture oozing with fruit, glycerin, and extract, and a blockbuster finish all suggest this ...

1994 Graham's Vintage Port

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1994 Vintage Port is going to be re-released. It has about 100 grams per liter of residual sugar. With a big eucalyptus note up front, this is elegant in the mid-palate with controlled tannins. Sweet and easy in some ways, this is readily approachable now, perhaps not at peak, but more expressive than the relatively brooding Dow's, also reviewed. The hint of caramel and raisins mixed with sugar makes this irresistible. It is sexy and intriguing. (MS)" (10/2016) 95 points Vinous: "The 1994 Graham’s Vintage P ...

Cedary cigar box aromas, savoury scents of wild herbs and a discreet aura of fresh mint add a further layer of complexity. 1992 Taylor Vintage Port

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Taylor's 1992 Vintage Port is unquestionably the greatest young port I have ever tasted. It represents the essence of what vintage port can achieve. The color is an opaque black/purple, and the nose offers up fabulously intense aromas of minerals, cassis, blackberries, licorice, and spices, as well as extraordinary purity and penetration. Yet this is still an unformed and infantile wine. If Chateau Latour made a late-harvest Cabernet Sauvignon, I suspect it might smell like this. In the mouth, the wine is out of ...

One of the more austere wines in the Melville range, the Block M is much less expressive today than the other 2011s. Ideally, the Block M is best cellared for another year or two. Kopke 10-year-old White Tawny Port (375ml)

What is a white Tawny Port? Good question. Produced from white grapes grown in the Douro, this beautiful Tawny is elaborated over time in wood barrels in a similar way to traditional Tawnies. However, the similarity stops there, as this unique product actually averages 15 years of age (it just does not state so because 15 year-old Tawny is not a recognized category). 1991 Graham's Vintage Port

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Graham's 1991 Vintage Port gets my nod as the port of the vintage. While keeping in mind that Graham's aims for a sweeter-styled port, there is no doubting the opaque purple/black color, or the explosive nose of black fruits, licorice, spring flowers, and tar. Thick and full-bodied, with a satiny texture and a blockbuster, alcoholic finish, this is a top-notch vintage port. (RP)" (02/1995) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Lovely plum and coffee aromas open to a full-bodied palate, with sweet, decadent fruit. Velvety, ...

1995 Taylor "Quinta de Vargellas" Vintage Port

94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby. Brooding blueberry, cassis, licorice and mineral nose complicated by a whiff of smoked meat; easy to pick out as Taylor in a blind grouping. Very concentrated, palate-saturating black cherry and black raspberry flavor. Thick and round but vibrant and delineated. Impressive extract. Explosive finishing fruit goes on and on. A very powerful port, but much more accessible early than a classic vintage Taylor. (ST)" (04/1998) 92 points Wine Spectator: "*#10 of the Top 100 Wines of 1998*A ...

2011 Dow's Vintage Port (375ml)

99 points Wine Spectator: "Powerful, refined and luscious, with a surplus of dark plum, kirsch and cassis flavors that are unctuous and long. Shows plenty of grip, presenting a long, full finish, filled with Asian spice and raspberry tart accents. Rich and chocolaty. One for the ages. Best from 2030 through 2060. *#1 Wine of the Year 2014 - Highly Recommended - Collectibles* (KM)" (02/2014) 96-98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Dow Vintage Port was made from no less than 44 separate ferments from finest fruit sourced from Quinta do Bom ...

1985 Warre's Vintage Port

91 points Wine Spectator: "Ruby-colored, with grape, dark chocolate and plum. Full and chewy. Tannins are still there and need to mellow. Medium-sweet and grapey. A little one-dimensional still, but impressive. '77/'85/'97 blind Port retrospective. (JS, Web Only-2008)" 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop... they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1 ...

1966 Taylor Vintage Port (cracked capsules/signs of past seepage)

97 points Vinous: "The 1966 Taylor's Vintage Port is a hugely overlooked Port. The bouquet is typical 1966 and oddly mirrors a Left Bank Bordeaux: conservative and masculine, yet detailed and offering attractive scents of cigar box, mahogany bureau, sandalwood and ripe cherry. The palate is foursquare with wonderful structure, spicier and more vigorous than the 1963 with greater persistence and focus. There is a wonderful bead of acidity and it feels virile and fresh on the finish that has beguiling symmetry. Later it reveals wild strawberry, cigar box, ...
