Monica Larner writes: "One of the oldest estates in the Langhe, Fratelli Barale was founded in 1870, shortly after the Barolo denomination was created with the help of Marchesi Falletti and founding father of modern Italy, Count of Cavour, Camillo Benso. Sergio Barale and his daughters manage the estate today. The various expressions of Barolo are all aged from two to three years in botte grande."

2018 Luigi Pira Barbera d'Alba Superiore
Top Pick!
91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Luigi Pira 2018 Barbera d'Alba Superiore offers a lush and rich bouquet with lots of dark fruit and blackberry. Background aromas include tilled earth, crushed stone and some blue flower or lilac. This is a pretty, mid-weight wine with vivid freshness. Fermentation finishes in stainless steel, and the wine ages in large oak casks made with Slavonian oak. Some 10,000 bottles were released. (ML)" (07/2020)

Poderi Luigi Einaudi dates back to 1897 and is one of the most historic producers in Dogliani. This bottling of Vigna Tecc was first introduced in 2005, and while the focus is on Barolo, their other wines, such as this Dolcetto, receive the same care and attention. The Vigna Tecc Dogliani Superiore is aged in large oak and cement and is typically quite dark-fruited in character and bold in body.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Gianpaolo Pira runs the Luigi Pira winery today. His 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo (with 6,000 bottles made) shows some ripeness with cherry skin, wild berry, pressed rose and some iron-rich soil. These results are simple and sharp, rendering an authentic and naked expression of the Nebbiolo grape. (ML)" (07/2020) Vinous: "The 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo is an attractive entry-level offering from Pira. Crushed flowers, mint, dried cherry, iron and leather add nuance to a Langhe Nebbiolo that has quite a bit of muscle. Then again, we are...

Situated around the commune of Treiso, the vineyards that supply the fruit for this wine are young, hence the wine's declassification from Barbaresco to Langhe Nebbiolo. Producer's notes: "Wine obtained from young Barbaresco Nebbiolo vineyards and harvested by hand in small hampers during October. The grapes, once in the cellar, are delicately pressed; the fermentation starts with the use of indigenous yeasts and takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, with daily pumping over for 20 days. After racking, the wine is put in large S...

92 points Vinous: " The 2018 Maggiorina is fresh, vibrant and perfumed. Bright red cherry fruit and a whole range of floral and savory notes give the wine its striking aromatic presence. Medium in body and vibrant, the 2018 has a ton of energy as well as personality, with a certain wildness that is quite appealing. Christophe Künzli, a Swiss importer with an enviable roster of producers, fell in love with the area in the 1990s. Künzli bought a small 0.5 hectare vineyard from Antonio Cerri, one of historic figures in Boca, and founded Le Piane, where...

From the importer:"The quality of Dolcetto from the village of Dogliani has been skyrocketing in the last few years, and Anna Maria's work is a good example of this. Her oldest vines were planted by her grandfather in the thirties, and the vineyards are steep and perfectly exposed. More recently she has become a convert to the doctrine of low yields, and she has joined the elite of Dogliani. DOLCETTO DI DOGLIANI 'SORI DIJ BUT' 'Sori' is Piedmontese dialect for the sunny south face of a hill. 'But' or Butti is the name of the hamlet where Anna Maria and...

This classic vermouth type is based on Piedmontese white wines, including some Moscato, and infused with more than thirty different botanicals, many of them grown in the Occitan Alps near the winery. The flavor of this vermouth is complex and vivid, with an excellent balance of sweetness and bitterness. Some vermouths taste strongly of a single botanical, but the interplay of components here is distinctive and delicious. All of the herbal infusions are done individually and in-house. Add it to your favorite cocktail, but not before you try it on the rock...

Lighter in style than the other Italian rosso vermouths we carry, the Bordiga Rosso di Torino is based on Piedmontese white wines, including some Moscato, and infused with more than thirty different botanicals, many of them grown in the Occitan Alps near the winery. A tinge of cola sweetness on the finish accents the pureness of the bitterness and spice.

Muscat grapes, being particularly aromatic, require a special winemaking technique in order to preserve the fruit's potent fragrance and to create a wine that is light on its feet and a fine accompaniment to fruit and nut-based desserts. The gently pressed grape juice is kept in refrigerated tanks until it is processed into the autoclave to obtain a sparkling wine by means of a fermentation at controlled temperature, using selected yeasts. 7.10% alcohol, with 95.20 g/l residual sugar. Importer's notes: "La Selvatica is the Dogliotti family's Asti Spuman...

Bricco or bric, in the Piedmontese dialect, stands for the highest point of a hill: a fitting name for Mauro Gaudio's splendidly positioned winery and grounds, 300 meters above sea level and offering a glorious view of rolling, vine-veined Monferrato. The Gaudios belong to Monferrato, as deeply rooted as the oldest rootstock on their estate. This was founded over three hundred years ago, and from the very beginning, wine was made and a tradition of quality passed on. It was not until Mauro's father Amilcare, however, that the wine of Bricco Mondalino was...

The Bordiga extra dry takes all the herbal complexity and concentration of the classic bianco and simply removes the sweetness. Based on Piedmontese white wines, including some Moscato, and infused with more than thirty different botanicals, many of them grown in the Occitan Alps near the winery, the macerations are done individually and in-house.

Vinous: "The 2018 Barbera d'Asti is fresh, fruity and very easy to like. Sweet red plum, spice and wild flowers are full of energy in this vinous, mid-weight Barbera done mostly in steel with some oak. " (08/2019)

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Berry-hued and bright, this is a champ for cocktail mixing and pleasing to sip straight. Red fruit leads the nose and palate, suggesting juicy raspberry and ripe cherry, enlivened by a hint of rosewater and finishing slightly drying and mildly bitter. Think of this as a refreshing alternative to sweet vermouth. *Best Buy* (KN)" (04/2019) K&L Notes: From the people who brought you Cocchi Americano and Cocchi Vermouth di Torino, comes the brand new rose colored, quinine-flavored, aperitif wine you've been anxiously waiting for...
