Mas Codina Brut Rosé Cava Penedes
Top Pick!
Mas Codina is a 40-hectare estate in Penedès which dates back to 1681. This Brut Rosé consists of Pinot Noir grown in their own vineyards in the middle Penedès region. Here the Garriga brothers are quite pleased with the results they see from the Pinot Noir grown in chalky-clay soils. They have been working organically for the past several years, and their first harvest doing so with certification was 2017. We direct import this delicious Cava, and it is arguably one of our best values in rosé bubbly right now. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)

From the producer: "Loxarel is happy to experiment with wine making and this 100% Garnacha wine is matured in 720 ltr clay amphoras for 4 months. Ops is the Roman goddess of fertility and plenty though Taurus the Bull features on the label as this constellation in biodynamic lore is said to influence growing. Loxarel is the brand name of the 4th generation family owned estate which, under the vision of Josep Mitjans, converted to organic production in 2002 then biodynamic in 2005."

Luis Gutierrez writes: "Loxarel produces still and sparkling wines from their 40 hectares of vineyards in Penedès, including a most amazing sparkling wine sold with the lees (without disgorgement), no less than 109 months after it's put in bottle! A total of 250,000 bottles per vintage are spread over a very wide portfolio that can be confusing and seems to be ever changing."

90 points Wine & Spirits: "Planted on clay and lime soils in the mountains of Catalonia, this sumoll has a tannic tension that immediately suggests grilled meat. Even so, there‚Äôs lovely depth of cherry flavor in this fresh, summery red for vacations under the sun." (10/2018) K&L Notes: 100% Sumoll an extremely rare black grape native to Penedès. Grown in Calcareous Clay soils. Vines are planted at over 500 meters (1650 feet). Hand-selected berries undergo a cold soak maceration and fermentation on the skins in 1500L fudres using indigenous yeast. The w...
