Rare Wine Company Historic Series "New York" Malmsey Madeira

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "The sweetest and richest in the Historic series, the New York Malmsey unfolds slowly in the glass, gradually revealing layers of depth and flavor. Coffee, toffee and date notes emerge, followed by earthy, almost truffley flavors. Powerful and assertive on the long finish. *Editors' Choice* (JC)" (11/2006) 92 points John Gilman: "The Rare Wine Company’s New York Malmsey is a bit darker in color than the Boston Bual, and carries closer to five percent residual sugar. The wine is quite a bit deeper-pitched aromatically than th ...Read More »

Rare Wine Company Historic Series "Boston" Bual Madeira

93 points Wine Enthusiast: " Slightly richer than the Charleston Sercial, the Boston Bual boasts knockout aromas of toasted nut oil, orange peel and hints of dark honey or maple syrup. Despite the extra weight and sweetness, it's not cloying at all the finish is mouthwatering and long. *Editors' Choice* (JC)" (11/2006) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Nutty aromas and flavors are filled with buttery notes in this plush and sweet style. Dried apricot and mango details add to the richness. Finishes with seductive smoke, dried beef and cocoa powder components. ...Read More »

Blandy's 5 year old Malmsey Madeira

Producer note: "Dark, golden brown with characteristic Madeira bouquet of raisins, toffee and nuts. Sweet with a rich, full bodied, honeyed and complex finish and beautifully balanced acidity. Blandy's 5 year old Malmsey was aged in American oak casks in the traditional 'Canteiro' system. This comprises of the gentle heating of the wine in the lofts of the lodges in Funchal. Over the years the wine is transferred from the top floors to the middle floors and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. After this gradual 'estufagem' the wine underwe ...Read More »

Madeira Vintners "Fenix" Seco Madeira

Isabella Gonzalez makes this delicious, drier style (50g residual sugar) Madeira. A new entrant to the Madeira market, this strikes a lovely balance between off dry amontillado saltiness and dry oloroso richness. It would be delicious paired with any number of richer soups (French Onion, butternut squash, rich, creamy tomato with tarragon), a cheese plate, or perhaps to add interest to a cocktail, mixed with bourbon, rye or Scotch in place of sherry.

Cossart Gordon 5 Year Old Bual Madeira

Wine Spectator: "Smooth and lush, with loads of glazed apricot, maple, vanilla and cream flavors. Fresh, focused finish. (KM)" (11/2006) K&L Notes: Cossart Gordon 5 year old Bual underwent fermentation off the skins with natural yeast at between 65°F-70°F in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. After approximately 3 days, fortification with grape brandy takes place, which arrests the fermentation at the desired degree of sweetness. Producer note: "Clear, amber colour with tinges of gold; a bouquet of dried fruit, vanilla, wood and toffee with ...Read More »

Blandy's 5 year old Sercial Madeira

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "In a recent series of entry-level Madeiras, this was a standout, offering excellent complexity and richness at a reasonable price. Nuts, toffee and dried fruit aromas and flavors swirl together, balancing moderate sweetness with harmonious acids. Long on the finish. *Editor's Choice* (JC)" (11/2006) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Lively and rich, with a hazelnut nose and apricot, pear and almond flavors. Long, spice- and mineral-filled finish. Rare Wine Company Historic Series "Charleston" Sercial Madeira

94 points John Gilman: "I really like the Rare Wine Company’s Charleston Sercial bottling, which is one of my favorites in their fine historic Madeira bottling series. This wine only has one percent residual sugar, which with Madeira’s inherent tangy acids, comes across as quite dry, but beautifully buffered. The bouquet is a first class blend of white cherries, oranges, a touch of nutskin, fresh nutmeg, smoky overtones and a lovely base of soil. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and beautifully transparent, with a superb core, racy acids ...Read More »

2002 Blandy's Sercial Colheita Madeira (500ml)

92 points Wine Spectator: "Racy, with a dry edge thanks to an almond husk accent that runs alongside the singed orange peel, salted caramel and sandalwood notes. Light ginger and green tea hints thread the finish, which stays on the dry side. (JM)" (06/2017)

Henriques & Henriques "1900 Century Solera" Malmsey Madeira
Bid on this bottle of Henriques & Henriques "1900 Century Solera" Malmsey Madeira. H&H is the only producer of Madeira who produces wine primarily from their own vineyards, an advantage they have always enjoyed since the company's founding in 1850. More than anything else, the winery is known for their Verdelho, though they also produce very good Sercial from their own grapes, as well as a tiny amount of Boal and Terrantez. All their age statements show the minimum age of wine blended in (as opposed to the average age), and most of their wines are aged the old fashioned way, in the canteiro (i.e. up in the rafters, exposed to heat and sunlight) method.

1863 Blandy's Malmsey Solera Madeira
Bid on this bottle of 1863 Blandy's Malmsey Solera Madeira. The Blandy family is one of the original founders of the Madeira wine trade, with roots tracing back to 1811, and is the only family to still own and manage its own original company. Thanks to this consistency, you can count on Blandy's old bottles of Madeira, the slowest-maturing and longest-lived wine in the world, to be in excellent condition. According the the producer, their older Malmseys exhibit the following characteristics: "Rich, smooth and luscious on the palate, showing complex notes of moka, dried fruit and honey, hints of tropical fruit, butterscotch, toffee-nuts and marmalade."

Rutherford & Miles 1814 Bual Solera Madeira
Bid on this bottle of Rutherford & Miles 1814 Bual Solera Madeira. The history of this producer: "The firm that was eventually to become Miles Madeira was originally known as Rutherford & Brown, established on the Island of Madeira in 1814. In 1856 Henry Price Miles left England with his family and arrived in Madeira. Having worked as an apprentice since the age of 12 under the tutelage of James Rutherford, he acquired sound knowledge and experience of the workings of the Madeira trade. In 1872, the Rutherfords left for London (due to Phylloxera which decimated most of the vineyards in Madeira) and started up a wine importing business at the Old Trinity House in Waterlane. This prompted Miles to purchase the company and stocks and he later made a gentleman's agreement with Rutherford that any Madeira sold by them in the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, or Russia would be bought through H. P. Miles and Co. This agreement was respected and carried on until the Rutherfords sold their firm R

1850 D'Oliveira Madeira Verdelho Reserva
Bid on this bottle of 1850 D'Oliveira Madeira Verdelho Reserva (96RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1850 Verdelho remains an exquisite Madeira that is one of the finest ever produced in this, the founding year of the winery. It has a well-defined bouquet with seductive notes of fresh marmalade, quince, dried mango and melted candle wax. The palate is crisp and well-defined with superb acidity that is perfectly in tune with the spice-laden vestiges of decayed fruit. It is fresh and taut, performing impressively for its 162-years of age. (NM)" (08/2012)

1870 Barbeito Bual Madeira
Bid on this bottle of 1870 Barbeito Bual Madeira. Neal Martin writes: " I previously described winemaker Ricardo Freitas as a “game changer” and I still espouse that opinion. If Madeira can be accused of being hidebound by tradition with outmoded techniques, then Ricardo is the man with the passion, ideas, the talent and let us not forget, the finance, to shake up a once somnolent industry content to ply its trade to tourists. What he achieves is a level of precision and delineation that is second to none, a lucidity of aromas and flavors that can be intoxicating."

1864 Blandys Bual Madeira
Bid on this bottle of 1864 Blandys Bual Madeira. Neal Martin writes: "Blandy’s is a brand under the Madeira Wine Company, who also stencil the bottles under Leacock, Cossart Gordon and very occasionally, Miles. There are subtle differences between them in terms of style, Blandy’s undergoing shorter fermentation and sweeter, perhaps more commercial. Cossart can be light and drier; Leacock’s richer. In this report, I thought it would be clearer to list the producer as the brand rather than the company. They have a talented winemaker in the form of Francisco Albuquerque, and in Chris Blandy, they have new blood coming on-line, a mature head on young shoulders, someone with ideas to usher both Blandy’s and Madeira itself into the 21st century."
