2017 Blason Pinot Grigio Isonzo del Friuli

Winery notes: "Golden yellow with coppery highlights expresses a floral character. Excellent as an aperitif and with fish based hors d’oeuvres." The 18 hectares of vines on the Blason estate in Isonzo grow in alluvial limestone soil that is also high in iron content, hence its predominantly reddish color. The growing region is at the confluence of two climate systems, that of the foothills of the Julian Alps and the nearby Adriatic Sea. This allows for white wines of fully developed flavors and aromas, but which also retain a striking mineral edge. This ...Read More »

2015 Blason Bruma Rosso Friuli

This wine is a sterling showcase of what the red Bordeaux varietals can achieve in the moderate climate of northern Italy. 'Bruma' is the Friulian dialect term for the morning fog that blankets the Valle de Isonzo. Made from 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot grown in pebbly limestone soils high in iron oxide, the Bruma Rosso is aged 18 months in small barriques. Showing red fruit character along characteristic savory notes of leather and espresso bean, it's an outsider's take on classic varietals and a noteworthy food-pairing wine.

2007 Teresa Raiz Decano Rosso

This is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Cabernet Franc, aged one year in Allier oak barrels. Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, the easternmost region in Italy, lies just east of Venice leaning against the Slovenian and Croatian borders. It is home to many small wineries including one of our favorites, Ermacora. Most of the famous wines produced in Friuli (the everyday usage of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia) are white but over the past couple of decades the quality of reds has jumped considerably.

2016 Ermacora Malvasia Colli Orientali del Friuli

From the winery: "Four hectares in 1922, this is our origin. With constant efforts, vine after vine, harvest after harvest, we are reaching the century of our company life. It dates back to 1922, when the family bought the Ipplis mansion along with the surrounding land, starting the on-farm activities with a differentiated production. After the initial run of Antonio, founder of the company, immediately after the Second World War, the son Marino takes the lead until the late '70s, when the whole family decided to devote himself exclusively to the product ...Read More »

2016 Zuani "Vigne" Collio Bianco

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Enticing scents of field flower, white stone fruit, citrus zest and a whiff of tomato leaf leap from the glass. A blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio and Friulano, the savory succulent palate delivers apple, juicy pink grapefruit, white peach and a hint of mineral. Tangy acidity keeps it light on its feet while an almond note wraps up the finish. *Editors’ Choice* (KO) " (07/2018)

2017 Venica "Jesera" Pinot Grigio Collio

2016 Edi Keber Collio Bianco

Importer notes: "Situated just a stone’s throw away from the Slovenian border, Edi Keber’s 10 hectares of vineyards grow on the classic “ponka” soil, a stony, friable marl that gives the wines remarkable weight and body. Extremely poor, the "ponka" naturally stresses the vines which produce very small quantities of grapes (1 to 1.5 kg/vine) and provide a distinctive minerality, typical of the Collio region. Keber's first bottled wines date back to 1957, although his family, originally from Vienna, has made wine for 350 years. Edi deeply believes in the u ...Read More »

I Clivi Ribolla Gialla Brut

"I am fascinated by Italian sparkling wines made of indigenous Italian varieties," writes importer Oliver McCrum, "and the Zanussis make a really good one. It's not made by either of the normal methods used to make dry sparkling wine, but rather by the method used to make Moscato d'Asti, which involves putting must into the special fermentation tank, and fermenting all the way from grape-juice to sparkling wine in one step. The wine is then aged in the tank on the lees until judged to be done, then decanted off the lees and bottled. (Some top-end Prosecc ...Read More »
