Champagne

Here you'll find all the familiar and famous producers at very competitive prices, but even more exciting is the smaller grower-producers that we offer. K&L imports many of these grower-producer Champagnes directly, saving you a bunch of money that would otherwise end up in the pocket of an importer or distributor. The folks are able to control the entire process of making their Champagnes, since they do the vineyard work as well as the winemaking. In addition to the Champagne selection shown below, we operate a Champagne Club that you don't want to miss.

Bruno Michel "Assemblée" Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
This fantastic Champagne used to be labeled "Blanche Brut" and comes from the villages of Pierry and Moussy in the sud-Épernay sub-region of Champagne. Bruno Michel has been organic since 1999. This Champagne is composed of 78% Chardonnay and 22% Meunier with 30% reserve wines. It is one of the most balanced Champagnes in our stock, with an effortless quality that is almost impossible to describe or resist. It has great toast and spiced apple aromas and flavors and a crisp dry finish. It is dosed at a very light seven grams per liter. (Gary Westby, K&L C...

This powerful Pinot Noir Champagne comes from a less than 1/2 acre parcel in the grand cru of Bouzy planted in 1970 called Les Maillerettes. These old Pinot vines are the source for the massal selections used by the Paillard family for the rest of their plantations. This bottling, which will cellar for a very long time, also shows quite well right now. While I would not recommend this as a party bottle, graduates of Champagne will find one of the best expressions of real Pinot in this majestic wine. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)

This fantastic, elegant, very dry rosé is composed of 90% Mesnil Grand Cru Chardonnay and 10% red wine from Pinot Noir grown in the 1er cru of Vertus. The Gonet family has crafted a wonderful, crisp rosé that has the elusive strawberry fruit that fans of the subtle style of Champagne rosé cannot get enough of. This is an incredible deal at the price. - Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "From the heartland of Chardonnay in Champagne comes this rich, creamy, apple-flavored wine. It has lively acidity, balanced with some sweetness from the dosage. It has weight and a crisp aftertaste. (RV)" (12/2012) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Lightly floral, this creamy crowd-pleasing Champagne shows good balance, with a lively mix of Honeycrisp apple, passion fruit and smoked almond. (AN)" (12/2015) Jancis Robinson: "100% Chardonnay from Oger, Cramant and Avize. From a 50-ha estate. Olivier Bonville is the third generation...

100 points Wine & Spirits: "If a wine could ever make you want to pull the top down on your '68 Ferrari convertible, rip off the rearview mirror and take off, this is it. It has a different kind of energy than the '02 Cristal Rosé, which is more ethereal, like strawberries at the right hand of some ancient Gallic god. This is more insolent, brash, earth bound. All the scents and flavors seem to emanate from limestone, as does the acidity, which hits at the front of the mouth and powers through the wine with the kind of solar energy that lifts mist off th...

This blend of 2/3 Pinot Noir and 1/3 Chardonnay comes exclusively from the Brochet families estate in the premier cru of Ecuiel on the mountain of Reims. It is dosed at just five grams per liter and sees 10% barrel fermentation. This exceptional vintage Champagne reminds me of some of the best 1988s that I tasted when they were young. This is streamlined, elegant and graceful Champagne with beautiful pain au levin toast and savory dark cherry Pinot power. If you like this as much as I do, it is worth getting some to age. “Classic” vintages like this are ...

Moussé Fils "L'Or d'Eugene Perpétuelle" Blanc de Noirs Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend of 80% Pinot Meunier and 20% Pinot Noir drawn from a solera established in 2003, the latest rendition of Moussé's NV Brut Blanc de Noirs L'Or d'Eugène was disgorged in June 2019 with four grams per liter dosage. Wafting from the glass with a deep and complex bouquet of golden orchard fruit, honeycomb, mirabelle plum, candied peel and fresh pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a rich and sapid core of fruit, lively acids and a delicate pinpoint mousse. This balanced, elegant Champagne is composed of 30% Chardonnay, 60% Pinot Noir and 10% Meunier. Nicolas Maillart Grand Cru Brut Rosé Champagne
Top Pick!
92 points Wine Spectator: "Refined and creamy, with focused notes of crushed white cherry, pastry cream, fleur de sel and orchard blossom. Mouthwatering acidity and accents of grated ginger and lemon zest hold sway on the finish. Elegant. (AN)" (11/2015) 90 points John Gilman: "The Nicolas Maillart non-vintage Brut Rosé is composed of a fifty-fifty blend of chardonnay and pinot noir, with eight percent of the pinot being still red wine. It is from the base year of 2014 and was finished with a dosage of seven grams per liter, after its disgorgement in N...

2002 Billecart-Salmon "Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart" Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
98 points James Suckling: "A very composed Champagne with plenty of still fresh lemon and white cherry fruits on offer. There's impressive clarity, power and richness here. The nose has candied peach, strawberry, white cherry and grilled nuts. Very flavorsome palate with pastry flavors adding savory notes to the stone fruits and citrus. Toasted almonds and chalky minerals define the long finish. Still so young and powerful!" (10/2017) 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2002 Brut Cuvée Nicolas François was disgorged in January 2015 with four ...

93 points James Suckling: "This is a dense and flavorful Champagne with fantastic depth and richness. Lots of bread dough and dried fruit such as mangos and some lemon rind. Full and layered yet remains fresh and vivid. Drink now." (03/2018) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "The small Sézanne region of Champagne is known for its Chardonnay (as exemplified by this wine) with its crisp mineral texture. The apple-skin and green-plum flavors are given an edge by the tight acidity and dryness. It could do with another few months in bottle, so drink this bottling ...

2007 Billecart-Salmon "Cuvée Elisabeth" Rosé Champagne (Previously $230) (Previously $230)
Top Pick!
97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Aromas of red berries, orange rind, dried flowers, warm brioche and spices introduce the 2007 Brut Rosé Cuvée Elisabeth, one of the highlights of this tasting chez Billecart. It's full-bodied, broad and vinous, with an enveloping attack and a bright underlying spice of acidity, revealing plenty of chalky dry extract and concentration, concluding with a long and precise finish. Despite the style of the vintage and the fact that malolactic fermentation was largely blocked, this is quite a textural, powerful wine. (...

93 points Wine Spectator: "Graceful, sleek and finely knit, with a subtle range of nectarine, lemon curd, almond blossom and ground ginger flavors, expanding on the silky mousse. Offers a lingering, mineral-laced finish. (AN)" (08/2019) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "With its 100% Chardonnay, this Champagne is finely textured, elegant with minerality and the freshest crispest apple flavors. 97 points Wine Spectator: "This goes from zero to 60 right out of the gate, with an intense spine of acidity driving tightly meshed flavors of crushed black currant, ground coffee, candied grapefruit peel and toasted almond. The profile expands on the palate, carried by the fine, raw silk–like mousse. Richly aromatic and expressive from start to lasting, spiced finish. Billecart-Salmon "Brut Réserve" Champagne

A full, defined palate demonstrates richness that will help to give this a long life in the cellar. (ME)" (02/2017) 95 points James Halliday: "An uncommon blend of 40% pinot meunier and 30% each of pinot noir and chardonnay, with 40% reserve wines, fermented in a mix of tank and use of aged oak barrels. Deliberate choice of meunier is the key to its drink any time soon style, which combining elegance, finesse and gre...

2012 Louis Roederer Brut Champagne (Elsewhere $80) (Elsewhere $80)
Top Pick!
96 points James Suckling: "Just over two-thirds Pinot Noir (Verzenay) and the balance southeast-facing Chardonnay from Chouilly. This has 30% of oak fermentation which has compressed the wine, lending it an air of extreme concentration. The nose is gently spicy, offering peaches and cherries as well as neat autolysis edge. The palate has a powerful, long and assertive feel, with peach and lemon pith, chalky minerals, and some grapefruit. A powerful vintage for Roederer." (01/2018) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This beautiful wine, with its poise, eleganc...

92 points James Suckling: "One of the great, all-round NV offerings in a classically styled, soft and silky package. Berries, biscuits and smooth, vinous texture in the mouth. Really easygoing with all-round appeal." (09/2018) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV Brut Réserve, based on the 2012 vintage and disgorged after four years on the lees in July 2017, is very clear, precise and fresh on the nose, with bright fruit and delicate brioche notes. Blending equal parts of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay from 30 different crus and w...

94 points Vinous: "The Extra-Brut Cuvée No. 742, based on the 2014 vintage, is a gorgeous wine. In this release, the Cuvée seems especially marked by Pinot in both its flavor profile and texture. Dried pear, hazelnut, mint, chamomile and dried flowers all grace this rich, beautifully resonant Champagne from Jacquesson. Best of all, the 742 will drink well with minimal cellaring. The 700-series Champagnes are often superb; the 742 is an especially fine edition. The blend is 59% Pinot Noir (from Aÿ, Dizy and Hautvillers) and 41% Chardonnay (from Avize and ...

This spectacular Champagne is one of the most sought after in France, and Launois' cult status made it very difficult for us to make a purchase. 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Based on the 2014 vintage, complemented by fully 40% old reserve wines, the new release of Charles Heidsieck's NV Brut Réserve was disgorged earlier this year. It's showing very well, opening up in the glass with notes of green apple, dried white flowers, pear, candied peel and walnuts. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a textural attack and a racier, tighter-knit core than either the 2012- or 2010-base renditions, displaying good concentration and underlying richness. Blanc de blancs from Bouzy? Yes--and what a blanc de blancs it is! This single-varietal, single-vineyard, single-harvest Champagne comes entirely from the Les Motellettes parcel which was planted in 1961. Quentin Paillard, his brother and his father all wanted to make terroir Champagne from their best, oldest plots--the very plots that they use to propagate the massal selections for the rest of their vineyard. This Chardonnay has understated power and is perhaps the most subtle, complex young Champagne that I have ever had. We only managed to get 4 cases...

Elisabeth and Jean-Marie only made 400 of these magnums, and we only got 12 of them! It is all Chardonnay, half from Elisabeth's best plot in Ay and half Louvois from Jean-Marie's best plot. It is a very limey, Puligny-Montrachet like expression of blanc de blancs, and dosed at just 4 grams per liter. -Gary Westby, K&L

This extra brut is not nearly as dry and steely as one might expect, as it is sourced from the Hugot estate's very old massal selected vineyards in the grand cru's of Cramant and Chouilly. It is Meursault-like in its richness, with subtle pineapple notes framed by fresh baguette flavors. Don't be afraid to drink this as an aperitif! It is quite rich and broad for an extra brut! Fans of Billecart-Salmon take note: this is an elegant, dry style that is made entirely from estate-grown fruit in Brouillet. This Champagne is a half and half blend of Pinot Noir and Meunier. The color comes from 12% Meunier that is vinified red, from an old-vine plot that gets quite ripe. It is a very pretty, tarnished pink color and has a lazy bead from over five years of aging on the lees. Our current selection has a 2012 base wine. It has gorgeous, red cherry fruit on the nose and mid-palate, but still finishes snappy and dry. The wine also has a ni...

If you are patient with this wine, and let it warm up a little bit after opening it, you may be surprised at how much depth and complexity it has. Don't let the initial exuberant fruit fool you--there is a lot behind this dry rosé!

The wine is fruity, tangy and zesty, with a strong edge of minerality that will soften. Drink the bottling from 2020. (RV)" (12/2019) Wine Spectator: "A lush style, offering immediate vanilla and honey flavors. Picks up a citrus note on the finish, as the structure makes itself evident. Very open and accessible. It is a full malo wine and is aged three years sur latte, being finished with a dosage of nine grams per liter. I am not sure if this is the same release I reported on last year or a new cuvée, but the wine is showing very well. This is an incredible value in Extra Brut, and unlike so many in this style, it has the natural richness to pull off the very low dosage. It is composed of 80% Pinot Noir, 15% Chardonnay and 5% Meunier. The wine benefits greatly from 50% Reserve wines and has plenty of richness and toast as well as great acidity. 2008 Billecart-Salmon Extra Brut Champagne (Previously $100) (Previously $100)
Top Pick!
97 points Decanter: "A blend of 65% Pinot Noir consisting of Premier and Grand Crus from the Montagne de Reims and the Vallee de la Marne and 35% Chardonnay from the Cote des Blancs. Significantly, this has nine years ageing on its lees (longer than some Prestige Cuvees), the 2008 was first released onto the global market back in March 2019. With an Extra Brut dosage of 4g/l, this is a highly expressive, confident and convincing interpretation of the vintage. Right now, it is youthfully sharp and focused with fine salinity, depth, acidity and balance, an...

" (07/2018) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This finely balanced wine is both crisp and fruity. Zingy acidity and lemon crispness are contrasted by riper apple and pear fruitiness. About this producer: "In the 19th century the founder of the family, Marie Arsène Brochet, would carefully select the best vinestocks in the vineyard and identify them with a touch of paint on the trunk. Already, her primary focus was the search for a very special quality and typicity of terroir. Only those vinestocks marked with paint for three years in succession were selected for subsequent use in grafting. Through this selection massale technique, the Pinot Noir d’Ecueil has developed its exceptional character. This grape varietal is now used for ¾...

This Champagne is composed of 1/3 each Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. All of the fruit is estate grown from the Ariston's vineyards in Brouillet … La Vallée Brouillet might be my very favorite place in all of Champagne.
