2018 Domaine des Niales Rhedon-Marin Mâcon-Villages Vieilles Vignes
Top Pick!
This is a charming Chardonnay from a small grower in the Mâcon. Lionel Rhedon-Marin is a graduate of the College of Viticulture in the nearby village of Davaye, where Guffens trained. All of their young-vine fruit is sold in bulk to one of the better negociants, who is pleased to have it, since Lionel is such a careful grower. But their old-vine fruit, all over 45 years of age, is kept for the domaine wine, which is charming and elegant. This is a balanced, well-made and wonderfully crisp and mineral-driven Mâcon. Only K&L's direct import makes this pric...

92 points Decanter: "This cooperative of about 430 growers is best known for its Crémant de Bourgogne, but it also makes a lovely St-Bris. The 2018 took a silver medal at the 29th Concours des Vins du Grand Auxerrois. Exhibiting delicate nuances of white flowers, its allure is immediate, and it dazzles with its bright stony impact. Wonderful acidity, especially given the vintage, makes it a pleasure to drink now – particularly with sushi. Drinking Window 2020 - 2020. (MA)" (06/2020)

2019 Château Vitallis Macon-Fuissé
Top Pick!
Founded by the Dutron family in 1835, Château Vitallis is run today by winemaker Dennis Dutron. It is an estate of about 40 acres, including 5 acres in Macon-Fuissé. From the importer: "The estate is known for its old vines, some of which are over 65 years old. The average age is 35 years. The vineyards are situated on Southeast facing slopes at an altitude of 750 to 900 feet in the villages of Fuissé and Solutre … They use traditional methods in the vineyards and and temperature-controlled cellar. The use of stainless steel vats assures a long cool ferm...

93 points James Suckling: "This is always beautiful with dried strawberries, flowers and hints of rosebush. Medium-to full-bodied with a round yet poignant tannin background and fresh acidity. Lively Mercurey. Drink or hold." (05/2020) 92 points Decanter: "Faiveley's exemplary Mercurey Premier Cru comes from a substantial six-hectare parcel that faces east on a very gentle slope. Just a little more concentrated than its La Framboisière cuvée - which is also worth buying - this is rich, sunny and full of red berry and bramble fruit with good underlying ...

2018 Château de la Charrière Beaune 1er Cru "Clos des Vignes Franches"
New!
In 2003, Yves Girardin, a 10th generation grower in Santenay (and brother of Vincent Girardin) acquired this property and built a new winemaking facility. More recently, after completing technical training, Yves’s son Benoit has joined him, bringing to 11 the consecutive generations of the family to grow wine in Santenay. Working in their new cellars, they have really improved quality a tremendous amount in the last few years, and we are excited to import their wines direct.

John Gilman: "The 2019 Mâcon-Villages from Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon is a nicely ripe and expressive wine that shows plenty of aromatic personality as it wafts from the glass in a pretty mix of nectarine, clementine, pretty nuttiness, a sound base of soil and a topnote of musky floral tones. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and succulent at the core, with just a wisp of CO2, sound acids and good length and grip on the wide open and inviting finish. This is a very nicely done, and though there is a touch of pinching on the backend from the...

91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is the first wine to display any appreciable reduction and it's enough to overshadow what appears to be ripe fruit. There is fine volume and punch to the well-detailed middle weight flavors that flash evident minerality on the energetic if somewhat attenuated finish. I suspect that the sulfur that is causing the reduction is also responsible for the attenuated finish and thus my rating assumes that once the post-bottling sulfur is absorbed, it will ameliorate both problems. *Outstanding* " (06/2020)

90 points Decanter: "The Louis Bouillot ‘Perle’ series is exceptionally well-crafted for its price and all of the wines are recommendable. I’ve picked out the Rosé Perle d’Aurore, though, as rosé is something of a Bouillot speciality (over a million bottles are produced every year) and it’s a wine which isn’t shy about its burgundian identity. 'We want,' says Marcel Combes, 'vinosity above all, almost a touch of tannin, with what you could almost call a compote style of fruit.' Autumn red fruits are there on the nose, but in a soft and understated sty...

2019 Château de la Charrière Bourgogne Rouge
New!
Château de la Charrière is one of our most popular direct import producers and a label that easily represents the best bang for your buck we carry in Burgundy. Formerly run by Yves Girardin, the business is now run by his young son Benoit, who definitely has modernized the winemaking a bit since his first vintage in 2011. Whereas the wines were a bit funky and rustic previously, the past few vintages are much cleaner, showcasing the pureness of the Pinot Noir by de-stemming completely so as to remove excess tannic structure.
Price: $17.99

86-89 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A very ripe yet nicely fresh nose speaks of pepper and liqueur-like dark berry aromas. The sleek, intense and delicious flavors possess very good energy on the solidly complex and lingering finish. This is ripe yet it retains good vibrancy that renders it quite appealing. *Outstanding* " (04/2020)

From K&L On The Trail blog: "Jean-Michel Giboulot took over the family business in 1982 and has put together one of the best bang-for-your-buck portfolios in all of Burgundy over the last three-plus decades. His wines from Burgundy's Savigny-lès-Beaune appellation are known as great values, and both the reds and whites are equally strong. Giboulot's wines straddle the line between traditional and modern, with reds that have crunchier fruit and fine tannins, but plenty of ripeness and purity. The whites are done in a feminine style with rounder fruit and ...

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru was showing a touch of reduction on the nose, so I had to leave the aromatics to one side. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm grip on the entry. This is a stricter, less opulent, more masculine Clos de la Roche with a saline note that became more prominent toward the finish. This will deserve at least five years in bottle: broody, a little saturnine at the moment but one surely destined to repay cellaring. Keep your eye out for this one. (NM)" (12/2017) 95 points Wine...

93 points John Gilman: "Gilles Lafouge may be best known for his outstanding red and white Auxey-Duresses cuvées and his Domaine Roulot-like Meursaults, but the Chanlins, year in and year out, is amongst the very best wines in his cellar. The 2018 is no exception, as this is a stellar young Pommard, offering up a superb aromatic constellation of red and black cherries, plums, a lovely base of minerality, gamebird, mustard seed, cedar and a very pretty topnote of violet. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and soil-driven, with a great core of sap...

2019 Domaine Renaud Mâcon-Villages
Top Pick!
Can’t afford Burgundy? Think again! The white wines of the Mâcon are excellent daily drinkers that won’t break your budget. Domaine Renaud is a property that we have been working with for years and they are consistently some of the best white wine values we have. Domaine Renaud is a small operation, making Mâcon, Pouilly-Fuissé, and St. Veran from 12 hectares of estate vineyards. Their cellar is modern, and they use upright ovals for many of the wines, and stainless steel for others. This value is a great alternative to California Chardonnay and an entry...

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This too is notably floral in character with additional notes of citrus, apple and a discreet dollop of wood. The rich, supple and delicious flavors are not especially dense but the natural refinement of Puligny is present on the moderately long finale where the only reproach of interest is a hint of warmth." (06/2020) Jancis Robinson: "Cedar and green fruits on the nose. Creamy texture and with that same slightly sour freshness as on the Bourgogne Côte d’Or. Salty freshness. (JH)" (01/2020)

2018 Domaine Jean et Gilles Lafouge Auxey-Duresses Rouge 1er Cru "La Chapelle"
Top Pick!
93 points John Gilman: "The 2018 la Chapelle is one of the ripest wines in the Lafouge cellars this year, coming in at all of 13.4 percent octane. The wine is just stellar on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet wafting from the glass in a classic mix of red and black cherries, raw cocoa, gamebird, plums, a complex base of soil tones and just a touch of new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and beautifully sappy at the core, with fine focus and grip, impeccable balance, fine-grained tannins and outstanding backend mineral drive on th...

2007 Louis Latour Meursault 1er Cru "Genevrières"
Top Pick!
Wine Spectator: "A fresh, lemon- and baking spice–flavored white, backed by lively acidity. This is a bit lean, and a tad sharp on the finish. (BS, Web Only-2010)"
Price: $79.99

89-92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here the nose is quite pure with its array of pear liqueur, tangerine, hazelnut and acacia blossom. The generously proportioned, round and seductively textured medium weight flavors exude evident minerality on the youthfully austere, long and balanced finale. This is very Narvaux in character and is excellent for its level." (06/2020) K&L Notes: 91-93pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "This comes from the lower part of the vineyard, just above Genevrières.Pale colour with a light green streak. This has more subs...

2014 Château de la Maltroye Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge 1er Cru "Clos du Château Maltroye"
Back In Stock!
92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A subtle application of wood sets off the pretty and airy combination of essence of pear, citrus peel, menthol and soft spice nuances. There is excellent energy and richness to the delicious medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with dry extract, all wrapped in an impressively persistent yet almost delicate finale. This is a wine of grace and harmony with just enough minerality to comment on. Worth checking out. *Outstanding*" (06/2016) 91 points Vinous: "Deep red with ruby tones. The aromas of crushed black c...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "The red wine from this dual-color premier cru is structured and dense, as befits a wine from a vineyard close to Pommard. The black fruits are equally solid, with a smoky edge from the wood aging still in play. Drink this wine from 2023. (RV)" (12/2019) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Concentrated and expressive, with black cherry, black currant and violet aromas and flavors permeating the dense texture. Firms up on the finish, yet shows enough fruit and flesh for balance and a good evolution. Offers a fine, juicy finish. Best fr...

2018 Château de la Maltroye Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Morgeot Vigne Blanche"
Top Pick!
91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A more elegant nose is attractively floral with an appealing array of layered aromas that include those of pear and apple compote as well as a touch of spice tea. The very supple and not especially dense flavors compensate by their beguiling refinement on the well-detailed and wonderfully complex finale that exhibits just a touch of youthful austerity. *Outstanding*" (06/2020)

2018 Domaine Paul Pernot Côte d'Or Bourgogne Blanc
Top Pick!
Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here the expressive nose is less spicy but more floral with its pretty essence of pear scents. The delicious medium weight flavors possess both good density and verve before concluding in a slightly firmer finish. This well-made effort will drink well young but could be set aside for a few years if that's your preference." (06/2020) Jancis Robinson: "Citrus-fruited and smoky at the same time, open. Slightly sour in its grapefruit-like freshness. But clean-cut and with a touch more intensity than some Bourgognes Blancs in 201...

Jancis Robinson: "Light nose and lots of vivacious, dancing fruit. Olivier seems to have the recipe … and it's fair value. If I found this in a country pub, I’d be delighted, though it’s probably not ‘serious’ enough to lay down. 16.5/20 points. (JR)" (01/2020) K&L Notes: Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "From bottle. Pale colour with a light green tint. 70 plots mostly below Meursault and Puligny but some from the Côte Chalonnaise and the Hautes Côtes de Beaune. 85% in wood, 12% new barrel. This wine accounts for one third of their white production! 12....

93 points Decanter: "The secret ingredient in this impressive village Gevrey-Chambertin is the inclusion of 25% Premier Cru grapes, which add a little more texture and concentration to the blend. With adroitly handled 20% whole bunches and new wood, it's spicy, sweet and textured with sappy acidity and notes of summer pudding and aromatic kitchen spices. Drinking Window 2021 - 2026. (TA)" (10/2019) 89-92 points Wine Spectator: "No Tasting Note Given." (04/2020) Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A ripe yet reasonably cool nose speaks of both red and dark be...

Domaine Renaud is a small operation in the town of Puisse making Mâcon, Pouilly-Fuissé and St. Veran from twelve hectares of estate vineyards. Their cellar is modern and they use upright ovals for many of the wines, stainless steel for others. The wines have long been customer favorites at K&L with their clean and fresh style, and their affordable price tags. With citrus and stone fruit profiles, zippy acidity, and a minerality that comes from their humble terroir, we think Renaud is one of the best entry level Burgundy estates we carry at K&L.

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here too there is a hint of petrol to the layered aromas of resin, white orchard fruit and a floral top note. There is fine volume to the nicely rich medium-bodied flavors that are slightly drier on the refreshing, indeed bracing finish that is a bit more structured." (06/2020) K&L Notes: Allen Meadows writes: "Sylvain Langoureau has been directing this 9 ha domaine since 1989 which he says is now farmed entirely organically."

2018 Domaine François Lamarche Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits
New!
91 points Decanter: "The Hautes Côtes are increasingly coming into their own in hotter, drier Burgundian vintages. This pale, delicate, refreshing Pinot Noir comes from a 1.53-hectare parcel close to Vosne-Romanée at 380 metres of altitude and has impressive freshness and lift, despite being picked last. Spice and tobacco notes from 30% whole bunches add extra complexity. Drinking Window 2021 - 2026. (TA)" (10/2019) Vinous: "The 2018 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits comes from 1.53 hectares of vine. 2018 Domaine Jean et Gilles Lafouge Cote-d'Or Bourgogne Rouge
Top Pick!
Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Ripe, fresh and nicely layered aromas are comprised mostly by various red berries and soft earth nuances. There is both good volume and verve to the relatively fine and attractively textured flavors that terminate in a mildly rustic and warm finish. This is really quite good for its level and worth checking out. *Outstanding, Top Value!*" (04/2020) Connoisseurs Guide: "Gilles Lafouge observed that his vines for his Bourgogne “Côte d’Or” are located in Pommard and he really likes the location of these vines and how they respo...

2018 Château de la Charrière Santenay "Les Charmes Dessus" Rouge
New!
Château de la Charrière is the family property of Yves Girardin, scion of one the most established families in Burgundy, with a history extending back 13 generations. Yves and his son Benoit farm 21.5 hectares of domaine holdings, and since Benoit has taken over the winemaking after finished his studies in Beaune and Bordeaux, the wines have truly taken on a refined and focused character that belies their incredibly affordable price points. We've been direct importing these wines for a number of years now, and they've more than capably stood up as some o...

90-92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This too is firmly reduced with reasonable, though not invisible, wood influence. The naturally elegance of Petits Monts is evident on the very sleek if tautly muscular flavors that possess good detail and minerality before terminating in a bitter cherry pit-inflected finish that displays better if not perfect balance." (01/2020)

2014 Domaine Bernard et Thierry Glantenay Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Chênes"
New!
90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes includes just a little whole bunch fruit from the parcel of older vines. The nose is already very attractive, the 30% new oak nicely integrated with the red cherries, wild strawberry and citrus aromas. The palate is clean and fresh with a keen line of acidity, tensile with a chalky texture in the mouth, dovetailing into an almost Pommard-like finish with impressive structure and linearity. It will need 3-4 years in bottle, but should turn out to be a fine Volnay. Thierr...

91-93 points Vinous: "The 2018 Maranges Clos de la Boutière 1er Cru comes from a parcel of 80-year-old selection massale vines (the domaine being one of only two to produce bottlings from this Premier Cru). It has a well-defined bouquet that is a little more mineral-driven compared to the La Fussières. The palate is framed by fine tannins and crisp, slightly tart red cherry and wild strawberry fruit. This Clos de la Boutière is very precise and translates the terroir with style and verve. Just superb. (NM)" (01/2020) 89-91 points Allen Meadows - Burgho...

2014 Domaine Bernard et Thierry Glantenay Pommard 1er Cru "Les Saucilles"
New!
90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There are just two barrels of the 2014 Pommard 1er Cru les Saucilles this year, although that is two more than 2013 when it was completely hailed. The vines here were planted in 1922. It has a refined bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, mixed with sous-bois and marmalade tones. I like the purity here. The palate is gentle on the entry with fine, saturated tannin, gently building in the mouth to reveal red cherries and raspberry fruit towards the lightly peppered finish. This is charm and personality gal...

Many producers that, in the past, may have viewed their Bourgogne rouge as an afterthought, are now taking the making of these wines more seriously. And with good reason: After all, these are often sampled as the first impression—or “calling card”—of the producer, so they’d do best by making a strong first impression in order to get consumers interested in their other, more expensive wines. Faiveley has gone through some changes, and their style has gone from deep extraction and austerity to a focus on fruit and freshness. It really shows in the 2017 Bou...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Offering up aromas of pear, orange oil, toasted nuts and freshly baked bread, the 2018 Mâcon-Villages Clos Saint-Pancras is medium to full-bodied, round and succulent, with a lively but open-knit core and a nicely defined finish. As I've written before, Frantz Chagnoleau and his wife Caroline Gon (winemaker at Domaine des Héritiers du Comte Lafon) farm their vineyards organically and have expressly sought out cooler, higher-altitude sites. Harvesting is by hand, followed by fermentation and élevage on the lees in almost en...

2018 Domaine François Lumpp Givry 1er Cru "A Vigne Rouge"
New!
91-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: " A similar if somewhat cooler and more restrained nose that introduces succulent and concentrated yet energetic middle weight flavors that possess surprisingly good mid-palate density considering the young vines while delivering solidly powerful and lingering finish. This is also quite firmly structured and will once again require at least a few years of bottle age first." 94 points James Suckling: " A rich, creamy-textured red with ripe-strawberry, chocolate, stone and hazelnut aromas and flavors. It’s full and layered with attractive fruit and lightly chewy yet polished tannins. Flavorful finish. Subtle, yet structured. Try after 2022." (08/2020) 92-94 points Vinous: "The 2018 Beaune Les Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus 1er Cru, from the 3.9-hectare monopole in Grèves, has a lovely, floral, very pure bouquet that frankly puts Bouchard’s other Beaune Premier Crus in their place. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple ta...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "In the heart of the massive run of premier crus on the slopes above the city of Beaune, this vineyard has produced a wine with powerful tannins and great swathes of black fruits. It needs to age … *Cellar Selection* (RV)" (10/2019) 92 points Wine Spectator: "This is bright and elegant, saturated with cherry, raspberry, vanilla and clove flavors. The precision and balance makes this attractive now, yet this should develop well. (BS)" (05/2020)

William Kelley writes: "Domaine Paul Pernot, an important seventh-generation estate in Puligny-Montrachet, continues to sell the bulk of the production from its 20 hectares of vines to négociants, the Maison Joseph Drouhin prominent among them. Octogenarian Paul Pernot is still to be found at the domaine on a daily basis—moving pallets when I visited— but it's his sons who are in charge these days. The wine that is bottled under the Pernots' own label is made in much the same way that it always was: whole cluster pressed, barrel fermented and matured for...

92 points John Gilman: "The Clos du Roi premier cur bottling from Laurent Juillot is also planted with a range of vine ages, as the parcels were planted at the same time as those in the Clos des Barraults (1972, 1980 and 1995). The wine sees thirty-five percent new oak during its elevage and the 2017 shows off a marvelously refined bouquet of red and black cherries, a bit of pomegranate, a very complex base of soil, a lovely mix of gentle spices, pigeon, fresh thyme, bonfire and cedar. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, tangy and structured, wi...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Aromas of green apple, pear, white flowers and beeswax introduce the 2018 Bouzeron, a medium-bodied, racy wine with an elegantly satiny attack, bright acids and a long, precise finish. This is a touch more demonstrative out of the gates than the 2017 rendition, but it retains plenty of cut in this warm year and should age well. I met the thoughtful Pierre de Benoist a few days before France went into lockdown due to COVID-19, and it was a pleasure to taste these new releases from Domaine de Villaine. As ever, th...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Offering up an inviting bouquet of cherries, raspberries, sweet soil tones and subtle hints of smoked meats, the 2018 Mercurey Vieilles Vignes is medium to full-bodied, bright and lively, its pure core of fruit girdled by velvety tannins and tangy acids. Once again, this has turned out beautifully and represents a fine example of the appellation. As I wrote last year, the Faiveley family first produced wine from rented vines in Mercurey in 1933, finally beginning to acquire land there three decades later. Today,...
