Bordeaux

We're extremely focused on Bordeaux - several staff members fly over to the region on multiple trips each year to taste new vintages from barrel and older vintages from bottle. K&L also enjoys excellent relationships with negociants and châteaux, and over the years we've established outstanding allocations on the top wines. It hasn't hurt that one of K&L's owners is a complete Bordeaux fanatic and our main buyer. The top red wines are typically blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and the white are primarily Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, though the blends vary substantially depending on which part of the region you're talking about. Within Bordeaux you'll also find the sweet wines of Sauternes. Interested in great Bordeaux? Look no further...

100 points Decanter: "A profoundly generous wine with coffee grounds and patisserie notes revealing grilled oak that's subtle but extremely pleasing. The quality of the tannins is exceptional - they are drawn out, elongated and shrouded in smoke. Layer upon layer of complexity unfurls in the mouth, getting better and better, with tons of juicy black fruit. The liquorice is black and tight on the perfectly balanced finish right now, with sprinkles of star anise and a gentle lift of fresh mint. Give it a good few years before opening. 2019 Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac 6-Pack in OWC (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Back In Stock!
98-100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A truly great Lafite, and maybe the wine of the vintage, the 2019 Château Lafite-Rothschild reveals a deep purple color as well as an ultra-classic bouquet of crème de cassis, lead pencil, unsmoked tobacco, chocolate, and gravelly minerality. Deep, full-bodied, and flawlessly balanced, it's a magical, heavenly bottle of wine that's going to be approachable with just 5-6 years of bottle age yet evolve for 100 years or more. It reminds me of the 2016, only with a touch more sexiness and opulence." (06/2020) 99-100 points James...

2018 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Pessac-Léognan (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Back In Stock!
99-100 points James Suckling: "Wow. I can’t get over the pureness of fruit in this wine with so much currant, tar and wet-earth character. Flowers, too. So aromatic. Full body, yet pureness and brightness of fruit. Layered. Incredible depth and beauty. Greatest ever?" (04/2019) 96-98 points Decanter: "These guys clearly know what they are doing, and they keep doing it. This wine is consistent even in difficult years but in years like this, where they have the room to manoeuvre, it really shines. This is great stuff, with lovely freshness to the deep fr...

Full body, yet pureness and brightness of fruit. Layered. Incredible depth and beauty. Greatest ever?" (04/2019) 96-98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Possibly one of the finest wines ever to come from the Bernard family’s flagship estate near Léognan, the 2018 Domaine de Chevalier checks in as a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot that hit 13.5% alcohol and will spend 18...

99-100 points James Suckling: "This is one of the most structured and deep Rauzans I have tasted with a full body, layers of fruit and a firm and polished tannin backbone. Compact and composed. Such depth and power. " (04/2019) 97-100 points Vinous: "The 2018 Rauzan-Ségla is fabulous. Regal and soaring in the glass, Rauzan-Ségla is simply unforgettable. Stunning aromatics and layers of flavor develop in the glass in a drop-dead gorgeous Rauzan that will leave readers weak at the knees. Inky and explosive, the 2018 possesses off the charts intensity and...

2015 Grand Destieu, St-Emilion
Top Pick!
92 points Vinous: "Unctuous, deep and super-concentrated, the 2015 Destieux shows the more modern side of Saint-Émilion. Bittersweet chocolate, grilled herbs, plum, violet, new oak and spice are fused together in a texturally rich, sumptuous wine that hits all the right notes. The oak has begun to integrate beautifully in this decidedly flamboyant, hugely delicious wine. Readers who appreciate the more extroverted side of Bordeaux will adore Destieux. Today, it is super-expressive, not to mention flat-out delicious. (AG)" (02/2018) 90-91 points James S...

2017 Roquefort Blanc, Bordeaux
Top Pick!
The wine just shines! Sauvignon Blanc (the base of the wine is zippy and herbaceous and has brisk acidity), Semillon (for body and structure), and Muscadelle. This wine is crisp and super focused on the palate. Minerals and earth with lemons and limes. According to Robert Parker: "Thanks to the talented oenological team of Denis Dubourdieu and his assistant, Christophe Olivier, Roquefort is generally one of the most interesting generic white Bordeaux."

2010 Valentons-Canteloup Bordeaux Supérieur
Top Pick!
Chateau Valentons-Canteloup Bordeaux Superieur is a family-owned property that sits just along the Dordogne river in Bordeaux. It is owned by the Meynard family and Jacques Meynard makes all the wine on the property from white to rosé to red. Jacques also makes a wine under the label of Chateau Valentons-Canteloup that he calls "Cuvée Excentrique", and it is truly eccentric for a Bordeaux Superieur, made from Petit Verdot (70%) and Merlot (30%).

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This rich wine has a high percentage of Sauvignon Gris in the blend. That softens the acidity and adds perfume as well as a ripe pear and spice character. The wine is intense and full, just hinting at herbal acidity at the end. *Best Buy* (RV)" (10/2020)

2016 Tronquoy-Lalande, St-Estèphe
Top Pick!
93 points James Suckling: "The aromas of violets and flowers are impressive in this with dark fruit underneath. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh and bright finish. Shows beautiful depth and resilience. Drink from 2023." (02/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Tronquoy-Lalande has a deep garnet-purple color and nose of crushed blackberries and black cherries with herbs, cigar box and damp soil. Medium to full-bodied, it offers good concentration and depth with firm, fine-grained tannins, finishing long and per...

92-93 points James Suckling: "This is a wine that shows lots of chocolate, tobacco and currants. Full body, with velvety tannins and a long finish. All there." (04/2011) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From Helene Garcin, this blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot displays classic tobacco leaf and smoky barbecue notes along with rich black currants and crushed rocks in a medium to full-bodied, seductive, attractively up-front style. Some Asian plum sauce is also noticeable in this complex, evolved and delicious wine, which can be dru...

2006 Arnauld, Haut-Médoc
Top Pick!
Chateau Arnauld is located between Margaux and Moulis, on a large gravel outcropping on the edge of the Gironde, neighboring Chasse-Spleen and Poujeaux. The oceanic breezes off the Gironde estuary keep vines cool, promoting long, even ripening for the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot planted to these mineral-rich, high-draining soils. The blend is typically about half Cabernet and half Merlot, often with a bit more Cabernet. The wines are made in a traditional style made to withstand the cellar: black-fruited with spicy complexity from barrel, a rich midpal...

93 points James Suckling: "Ripe and generous with lovely freshness. This is a very elegant Haut-Médoc that has excellent balance and a long, almost silky finish that makes it easy to enjoy right now. Drink or hold." (02/2019) 91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Lamarque has a very refined bouquet with gorgeous aromas of blackberry, cedar and pressed flowers that unfurls beautifully in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with quite robust and firm tannin, but the fruit is so pure that you barely notice its arching structure. It deli...

1982 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac
Top Pick!
100 points James Suckling: "What an amazing red. It's so very youthful with toasted oak, light vanilla, and dark berries such as currants and blueberries. Then it turns to mint. This is so fresh and intensely fruity. It lasts for minutes on your palate with each sip. It is so powerful yet elegant. It will improve for hundreds of years. I would still leave it in my cellar for five or ten years. If you need to drink it, decant it three to four hours in advance." (11/2010) 100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine remains one of the legends of ...

2015 Pauillac de Latour, Pauillac
Top Pick!
94 points James Suckling: "A firm and linear red with currant, blackberry and stone aromas and flavors. Full yet closed and tight. Acidity drives this one. Third wine of Paulliac. Serious. Needs two or three years to come together." (02/2018) 93 points Vinous: "Latour's 2015 Pauillac is gorgeous. Deep, pliant and super-expressive, the 2015 is utterly captivating. Silky tannins wrap around a core of fruit as this radiant, inviting wine shows off its charms. There is a level of purity to the 2015 that is remarkable. In the past, the Pauillac has at times...

It's a total winner and offers lots of black and blue fruits, plenty of leafy herbs, and hints of tobacco, medium body, supple tannins, and terrific balance. It's another sleeper readers should snatch up and drink over the coming 4-5 years." (02/2019) James Suckling: "Bold and crisp with a slew of cherries, this is generous, basic red Bordeaux with a slightly sappy finish. Drink or hold." (02/2019) Vinous: "The 20...

2010 Bel-Orme Tronquoy de Lalande, Haut-Médoc

Full and nice texture on the palate with charming fruit and fine tannins. Enjoyable finish with medium length and a tasty licorice note. Drink from 2016." (06/2013) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at Château Rauzan-Gassies. The 2010 Bel-Orme Tronquoy de Lalande has a superior bouquet to the 2009, a little more fruit intensity and focus, dusky blackberry, scorched earth with a touch of leather. The palate is medium-bodied...

2016 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien (Direct from Property)
Top Pick!
97 points James Suckling: "Terrific intensity of dark berries, almost peppery blackcurrants and violets with attractive and integrated, spicy oak and an earthy edge. The palate has a super powerful and long, linear core with plenty of fruit flesh strapped in tight for a long and thrilling ride into the finish." (02/2019) 97 points Wine Spectator: "This is so vivid as it brims with pastis-soaked plum, blackberry, black currant and blueberry paste flavors, all carried by a perfectly integrated brambly spine. Tar and ganache notes give the finish an extra...

Jancis Robinson: "Blackish ruby. Very much alive even if slightly less drive than the 1996. With food this could shine. Lots of interest here on this slightly gamey wine. Tannins still in evidence. 16/20 points. (JR)" (06/2018) K&L Notes: This historic château was constructed in 1277 and renovated in 1997. Its wines are deep and elegant, hand crafted with care. Grapes are sustainably grown on gravelly soil and a deep limestone base, then picked at optimum maturity and carefully sorted. Each plot is vinified separately then blended into the final wine. ...

2009 Clinet, Pomerol
Top Pick!
100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Clinet has been on a hot streak lately and the 2009 appears to be the greatest wine ever made at the estate, surpassing even the late Jean-Michel Arcaute's monumental 1989. A blend of 85% Merlot and tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc (12%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (3%), this big Pomerol boasts an opaque, moonless night inky/blue/purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of blueberry pie, incense, truffles, black raspberries, licorice and wood smoke. Viscous and multi-dimensional with silky, sweet tannin, massive ...

Jancis Robinson: "90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from Lugasson, property of the Bellanger family. 30-year-old vines yielding 50 hl/ha. Two-thirds aged in barrel for 12 months. Clean and direct. With fairly pronounced tannins still. I'm not sure I agree with the Bellangers that this has 12 years' ageing potential but it's certainly a very good effort for the price. 16/20 points. (JR)" (11/2019) Wine Enthusiast: "Still young and full of bright fruit, this is a juicy wine with acidity and red-fruit flavors. Its vibrant character is lively although it...

2016 Pape Clément, Pessac-Léognan (Pre-Arrival, Elsewhere $125) (Pre-Arrival, Elsewhere $125)
Top Pick!
98 points James Suckling: "Stunning concentration of perfectly ripe blackcurrants here with a delicate whiff of vanilla oak and extremely fine tannins that are almost perfectly integrated on the seductive and delicate palate, right through the almost literally breathtaking, super-long and very polished finish." (02/2019) 97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Tasted on two separate occasions, the 2016 Château Pape Clément never failed to disappoint, offering a huge, powerful, full-bodied personality as well as beautiful notes of cassis, graphite, high-class cigar tob...

2015 Fontesteau, Haut-Médoc
Top Pick!
91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois annual tasting, the 2015 Fontesteau has a generous bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, cedar and sous bois scents that are nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, quite fine tannin, plenty of edgy red fruit and impressive delineation on the finish that shows focus and length. This is recommended. Bravo. 2015 Baron de Brane, Margaux
Top Pick!
92 points Decanter: "2015 was an exceptional vintage in this part of the world, making many second wines a shrewd value purchase. Luckily this doesn't disappoint, although I cannot recommend highly enough that you go for the 2010 at this point, as the 2015 is still extremely young and tight. You can feel a touch of heat on the finish from the alcohol, which is indiscernible in the grand vin, but you can entirely forgive it given its finesse combined with a swirl of cinnamon and a lick of fun. (JA)" (11/2017) 90-91 points James Suckling: "A tight and fo...

1985 Angélus, St-Emilion
Top Pick!
Jancis Robinson: "De Boüard’s first vintage, and already aged on the lees. Sweet and rather gorgeous and with some freshness. Kerpow! There is a bit of decay but also liquorice." (11/2011) Wine Spectator: "Very concentrated, with plum and cassis character and a hint of nuts. It's full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and loads of coffee and fruit on the finish. Better after 1996." (10/1994) K&L Notes: 90 points Neal Martin for Wine Advocate: "Tasted at Farr Vintners’ vertical from ex-chateau magnum. The 1985 has declined since I tasted it five ye...

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A candidate for the wine of the vintage, the 2009 La Mission-Haut-Brion stood out as one of the most exceptional young wines I had ever tasted from barrel, and its greatness has been confirmed in the bottle. A remarkable effort from the Dillon family, this is another large-scaled La Mission that tips the scales at 15% alcohol. A blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (47% of each) and the rest Cabernet Franc, it exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a magnificent bouquet of truffles, scorched ea...

2016 Calon Ségur, St-Estèphe

Crème de cassis, dried flowers, earth, and loads of limestone-like minerality all flow to a full-bodied, opulent wine that has sweet tannins and a great mid-palate. Drink this uber-sexy beauty any time over the coming 15+ years. " (10/2018) 95 points James Suckling: "Aromas of blackberries, blueberries, wet earth and black tea. 2016 Montrose, St-Estèphe
Top Pick!
100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Unquestionably one of the top 2-3 wines of the vintage, the 2016 Château Montrose is a monument in the making. Checking in as a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc raised in 60% new French oak (the balance was in once-used barrels) and representing a tiny 36% of the production, this deep purple-colored 2016 possesses powerful, incredibly classic Saint-Estephe notes of creme de cassis, graphite, damp earth, lead pencil shavings, and burning embers. 2005 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
Top Pick!
96 points James Suckling: "A meaty and decadent Lynch with very ripe currant aromas on the nose. Full body, velvety-textured tannins and a powerful finish. It shows so much structure and fruit yet remains polished and focused." (10/2015) 96 points Wine & Spirits: "There's a relaxed feel to this wine. Cazes's team can dress Lynch-Bages in the black-tie formality of a first growth, but the wine is still lovely-a touch of gaminess makes it friendly rather than ponderous. There's something ethereal about its tannins, like a chocolate truffle melting in the...

2009 Montrose, St-Estèphe (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Back In Stock!
100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Harvested between September 17 and October 5, this wine seems always open for business, so to speak, much like the great 1982s. The summer of 2009 was very hot and dry, which got the harvest off to a reasonably early start. The blend was 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Jean Bernard Delmas’ goal was to find perfect equilibrium between freshness and concentration, given its incredible opulence and the voluptuous character this vintage offered. That’s what this wine has in...

99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Tasted at the domaine, the 1982 Leoville Las Cases is just about pure perfection, and while certainly mature, it has plenty of life ahead of it. Thrilling notes of blackcurrants, kirsch, tobacco leaf, cedar box, menthol, and exotic spices all emerge from this seamless, powerful yet magically elegant Leoville Las Cases. Opening up in the glass, with a smoky, singular character, it's an incredible wine from this terroir that has an almost Latour-like regal quality. It should continue drinking well for another 10-15 years and I'm sur...

100 points Decanter: "Château Margaux's grand vin accounts for 35% of production in this vintage. It stood out as a potential wine of the vintage during en primeur and it is more than living up to its promise. The concentration is stunning, with a fruit structure that is darker, tighter and more insistent than Pavillon. It's so fresh, there is an opulence here, a dense silkiness to the tannins that is fleshed out across the palate, building to a big finish with menthol freshness. This is classically-styled Margaux with aromatic acrobatics and tannins so ...

2014 Malescot-St-Exupéry, Margaux
Top Pick!

(02/2017) 93 points Vinous: "The 2014 Malescot Saint Exupéry is powerful, rich and explosive. One of the more exuberant, flamboyant Margaux that readers will come across, the Malescot exudes serious depth and intensity. Black cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and dark spice meld into the deep, succulent finish. The 2014 needs time in bottle, but it is impressive and also highly promising. (...

(RV)" (04/2017) 94 points James Suckling: "There’s a very rich and powerful core of red-plum and mulberry aromas and flavors here, delivering an assertive and very shimmery, polished palate. Great tannin texture. Long and regal. Every bit as good as the 2015, but more lively in 2016. " (02/2019) 94 points Vinous: "The 2016 Fombrauge has come together beautifully during its agin...
