Bordeaux

Bordeaux

We're extremely focused on Bordeaux - several staff members fly over to the region on multiple trips each year to taste new vintages from barrel and older vintages from bottle. K&L also enjoys excellent relationships with negociants and châteaux, and over the years we've established outstanding allocations on the top wines. It hasn't hurt that one of K&L's owners is a complete Bordeaux fanatic and our main buyer. The top red wines are typically blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and the white are primarily Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, though the blends vary substantially depending on which part of the region you're talking about. Within Bordeaux you'll also find the sweet wines of Sauternes. Interested in great Bordeaux? Look no further...

2017 Grand Bateau Blanc, Bordeaux

This blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon is a stellar value from Bordeaux. Grapes are hand-harvested and the juice undergoes a cold soak before 75% of it is barrel fermented and the other 25% is fermented in stainless steel. Crisp and mineral with vanilla tones on the nose, the palate is nicely rounded and full with citrus and tropical fruit. It is delicious with lighter foods and also quite refreshing on its own.

The cépages is sixty-five percent merlot and thirty-five percent cabernet sauvignon and the wine is never aged in more than ten percent new wood. This property is located at the southern end of the Graves region, very close to Barsac and Sauternes. It is one of the oldest in Bordeaux, dating from the fourteenth century. John Statton built the original chateau in 1360 on the site of a Roman villa, while the land was still in English possession. In the 1500s, the property was purchased and run by the powerful Angol-Gascon family of Montferrand. At the time there were 14,000 acres of vineyards and property. 2013 Doisy-Daëne, Sauternes (375ml)

93-96 points Vinous: "A model of total grace and understatement, the 2013 Doisy-Daëne is drop-dead-gorgeous. Freshly cut white flowers, mint, sweet spices, pears and lychee all meld together in the glass in an effortless, gracious wine. The soft, intensely floral, crystalline finish makes it impossible to resist a second taste. The 2013 Doisy-Daëne impresses for its superb drinkability. If I was going to buy only one moderately-priced Sauternes in 2013, Doisy-Daëne would be it. " (04/2014) 93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Denis Dubourdieu h ...Read More »

2015 Cap St-George, St-Georges-St-Emilion (Previously $27) Top Pick!
2015 Cap St-George, St-Georges-St-Emilion (Previously $27)

93 points Decanter: "One to watch in 2015. Not a hugely well known wine from a satellite appellation, but this has an excellent balance between glamour and restraint. There is good persistency, with touches of minerality and salinity. It's my favourite of the Janoueix range, and again a testament to 2015 in the smaller right bank appellations. (JA)" (12/2017) 89-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Cap St George, now owned by Jean-Philippe Janoueix, has a rich, sexy bouquet with small dark cherries, crème de cassis and dark plum fruit, a ...Read More »

2016 Badette, St-Emilion (Pre-Arrival)

92-93 points James Suckling: "Crushed-stone and chalk character with dark fruit such as blueberries. Medium to full body and chewy tannins. Done. " (04/2017) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Badette (composed of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot) leaps from the glass with Black Forest cake, warm black plums and blueberry compote notes with suggestions of baking spices, fragrant earth and menthol plus a waft of lavender. 2010 La Prade, Côtes de Francs

90 points Wine Spectator: "Dark and ripe, with a lush edge to the plum sauce and dark fig notes that's held in check by a charcoal frame. Bitter orange and Campari hints flash through the finish, with a briary feel as well. (JM, Web Only-2013)" K&L Notes: Château La Prade, just four-and-a-half hectares, was purchased by the Thienpont family in 2000. Despite the tiny size, part of the vineyards are on the limestone plateau and the rest is on a south-facing slope rich in iron. This somewhat unique terroir results in a rich Merlot-dominated blend with grea ...Read More »
