Bordeaux

Bordeaux

We're extremely focused on Bordeaux - several staff members fly over to the region on multiple trips each year to taste new vintages from barrel and older vintages from bottle. K&L also enjoys excellent relationships with negociants and châteaux, and over the years we've established outstanding allocations on the top wines. It hasn't hurt that one of K&L's owners is a complete Bordeaux fanatic and our main buyer. The top red wines are typically blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and the white are primarily Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, though the blends vary substantially depending on which part of the region you're talking about. Within Bordeaux you'll also find the sweet wines of Sauternes. Interested in great Bordeaux? Look no further...

2009 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac
Back In Stock!
Top Pick!
100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2009 Pontet-Canet continues to just knock it out of the park every time I’ve been lucky enough to drink a bottle, and this beauty was as good as it gets yet again. Deep purple-colored, full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, and just about off the charts in terms of scale and density, it nevertheless just glides across the palate with an ethereal, seamless texture that never seems heavy or cumbersome. This is pure Pauillac in all its glory and is a monumental wine in every way. Drink it any time over the coming 4-5 decades." (...

2015 Arnauton, Fronsac
Top Pick!
90 points James Suckling: "Blackberries, sandalwood and dried-dark-mushroom aromas follow through to a medium to full body, round and chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Needs a year or two to soften." (02/2018) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "With a claim as the highest vineyard in Bordeaux (not that that means much), this estate has produced a powerful, rich wine that just avoids overripeness and moves into a more elegant style. Plenty of tannins still go with the dark-chocolate flavors and the black fruits. (RV)" (05/2019)

2006 Arnauld, Haut-Médoc
Top Pick!
Back in again for the third time in a year. Maybe the last one hundred cases! Chateau Arnauld is located between Margaux and Moulis, on a large gravel outcropping on the edge of the Gironde, neighboring Chasse-Spleen and Poujeaux. The oceanic breezes off the Gironde estuary keep vines cool, promoting long, even ripening for the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot planted to these mineral-rich, high-draining soils. The blend is typically about half Cabernet and half Merlot, often with a bit more Cabernet. The wines are made in a traditional style made to withs...

92 points James Suckling: "The quality of the fruit and tannins are very pretty here. It’s full-bodied, with round velvety texture and a delicious finish. Very impressive. Drink or hold." (07/2014) 90-92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Firm tannins, but also ripe, sweet fruits, with a fine balance. While the wine is on the light, fresh side, it does have a good, final structure. (RV)" (04/2010) K&L Notes: At the very top of the Haut-Médoc, embedded in a sea of gravel just next to the Gironde River north of St-Estèphe, sits the anomaly of the Left Bank: Chât...

2016 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac
Top Pick!
100 points Wine Enthusiast: "A voluptuous wine, this is rich and fruity yet properly balanced by a magnificent structure. Pure, crisp and packed with a black currant flavor, this will be a remarkable wine as it develops. Still young, it needs many years to develop. *Top 100 Cellar Selections 2019, Editors' Choice* (RV)" (05/2019) 99 points Vinous: "The 2016 Pontet-Canet is absolutely breathtaking. Powerful, ample and racy in the glass, the 2016 is one of the most exquisitely well-balanced young Pontet-Canets I can remember tasting. Savory, high-toned a...

91-92 points James Suckling: "A big and fruity wine for the appellation with round and chewy tannins. Lots going on. Serious. Best ever?" (04/2019) Vinous: "The 2018 Renon is a plump, juicy red to drink over the near and medium-term. Ripe red cherry, cedar, tobacco, mint and wild flowers grace this attractive, mid-weight Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon blend. (AG)" (04/2019) K&L Notes: This 19-hectare property, which was named by the Franciscan monks who created the vineyard, is located along the Garonne river in Bordeaux Supérieur. 50% Merlot, 25% Caberne...

2016 Fombrauge, St-Emilion
Top Pick!
93-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a perfumed wine, likely thanks to a dollop (7%) of Cabernet Franc. It has ripe fruit characters, pleasant richness and a firm structure. (RV)" (04/2017) 94 points James Suckling: "There’s a very rich and powerful core of red-plum and mulberry aromas and flavors here, delivering an assertive and very shimmery, polished palate. Great tannin texture. Long and regal. Every bit as good as the 2015, but more lively in 2016. " (02/2019) 94 points Vinous: "The 2016 Fombrauge has come together beautifully during its agin...

2009 Grand Pontet, St-Emilion
Top Pick!
92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend of 70% Merlot and the rest equal parts Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine has an opaque purple color and a sweet nose of vanillin, roasted coffee beans, chocolate and kirsch liqueur intermixed with blacker fruits such as cassis. It is rich, full-bodied, moderately tannic, but low in acidity and quite heady and powerful (15% natural alcohol). This impressive wine is a big, back-strapping effort to drink over the next 15+ years. Produced by Sylvie Pourquet, the sister of Gerard and Dominique Be...

1997 Grandis, Haut-Médoc
Top Pick!
A K&L new discovery in 2020. Originally a hunting lodge, Château Grandis is a little-known estate planted to approximately 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Its gravel and clay-filled limestone soils have been home to vineyards since the early 1700s, but the winery was rebuilt and modernized in 1985, resulting in a great boost in quality of production. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, which is followed by ageing in 100% oak barrels for 12-18 months. This wine is so delicious. Bright ...

2000 de Viaud, Lalande-de-Pomerol
Top Pick!
Known for their practice of holding back vintages to maturity, this small but high-quality Lalande-de-Pomerol producer crafts some best-in-class wines that are often tough to find but remarkably rewarding. De Viaud remains a family-run property of the Bielle family, and is a great reference-point for classic claret in the modern era.
Price: $39.99

The wine just shines! Sauvignon Blanc (the base of the wine is zippy and herbaceous and has brisk acidity), Semillon (for body and structure), and Muscadelle. This wine is crisp and super focused on the palate. Minerals and earth with lemons and limes. According to Robert Parker: "Thanks to the talented oenological team of Denis Dubourdieu and his assistant, Christophe Olivier, Roquefort is generally one of the most interesting generic white Bordeaux."
Price: $15.99

This château, owned by the Meynard family, sits right next to the Dordogne river. Jacques Meynard is in charge of vinification.
Price: $12.99

Château Bois-Malot is located in St-Loubes and situated on the shoreline of the Dordogne River. The soils are clay and light limestone with a subsoil of red pebbles and clay. 2010 Clinet, Pomerol (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Back In Stock!
97 points James Suckling: "Gorgeous nose with lots of dark fruit like plum and blueberries. Crushed pepper and chalk with wild strawberries and vanilla. Dense and velvety on the palate with superbly polished tannins and great depth. It's absolutely gorgeous now but needs at least five to six years of bottle age to really shows its great quality. " (02/2013) 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The blend is largely dominated by 85% Merlot, with some Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Cabernet Franc also included. Inky/purple-colored, the wine...

2016 Bellegrave du Poujeau, Haut-Médoc
Top Pick!
90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This vineyard in the southern part of the Médoc is so close to Bordeaux city that only a small part has been saved from buildings. The wine is worth the effort, rich with fine tannins and wood-aging flavors that sustain the ripe blackberry fruits and smoky character. The wine should age well, ready to drink from 2022. (RV)" (04/2019)

2004 Haut-Bergey, Pessac-Léognan
Top Pick!
90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A top-notch effort from proprietress Helene Garcin, Haut-Bergey’s 2004 exhibits an evolved, cedary, smoky, tobacco, and sweet cherry-scented bouquet offered in a medium-bodied, supple-textured style. (RP)" (06/2007) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Red-ruby. Sexy, rather wild aromas of roasted raspberry and game. Supple but firm-edged, with good grip to the raspberry and mineral flavors. There's good fruit here but limited fat and a restrained sweetness. (ST)" (06/2007)

2016 Roquefort Rouge, Bordeaux
Top Pick!
Jancis Robinson: "90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from Lugasson, property of the Bellanger family. 30-year-old vines yielding 50 hl/ha. Two-thirds aged in barrel for 12 months. Clean and direct. With fairly pronounced tannins still. I'm not sure I agree with the Bellangers that this has 12 years' ageing potential but it's certainly a very good effort for the price. 16/20 points (JR)" (11/2019) Wine Enthusiast: "Still young and full of bright fruit, this is a juicy wine with acidity and red-fruit flavors. Its vibrant character is lively although it ...

2009 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac 12-Pack in OWC
Back In Stock!
100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A wine I’ve been lucky enough to have numerous times since release, the 2009 Pontet Canet is one of those magical efforts that wine lovers encounter far too infrequently. From one of the greatest vintages for the region ever, this deep, saturated purple-colored effort offers an incredible bouquet of crème de cassis, blackcurrants, lead pencil shavings, damp earth, and graphite. This gives way to a full-bodied, powerful Pauillac that carries a massive amount of sweet fruit yet stays light and beautifully balanced on the palate. Wi...

98 points Decanter: "An incredible wine; this just tingles through the palate from beginning to end. Rich body and a silky, polished texture. Clear pencil lead, black olive, cassis, rosemary. Firm tannic hold suggests there are decades ahead, with a fresh uplift to the finish. A classic example of how Pessac-Léognan can deliver perfect tightrope balance in its best wines. Made from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc with 1% Petit Verdot to complete the blend. (JA)" (10/2019) 98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is an ext...

2016 Le Crock, St-Estèphe
Top Pick!
94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Under the same management as Château Léoville-Poyferré in Saint-Julien, this estate belongs to the Cuvelier family. With its structured Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is made to age. Big tannins and concentrated fruits are full and dense. *Cellar Sellection* (RV)" (05/2019) 93 points James Suckling: "The purity of the cabernet sauvignon is very evident here with currant and floral character. Full-bodied, firm and very polished with lovely, strong tannins. Muscular and polished. Give it three or four years to come together." (...
Price: $39.99

Here is a fine find from the Right Bank. Founded in 1704, this 14-hectare estate run by the Bardet family is located on gravelly/clay soils that impart depth and complexity to the wine. 86% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. We just discovered this property in 2019, and we have already sold quite a bit of their 1995 and 1996. Super old-school label for an “old school” property. This wine has lots of red berry aromas and flavors. It really opens up with some decanting.

2016 Ronan (Clinet), Bordeaux Supérieur
Top Pick!
91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The Merlot-dominated 2016 By Clinet (there's 5% Cabernet Franc) is a charming, already delicious effort that gives up elegant notes of chocolate-laced plums and dark fruits, notes of leafy herbs and truffle, medium to full body, and a layered, charming mouthfeel. It's a terrific Bordeaux to drink over the coming 7-8 years or so." (02/2019) Vinous: "The 2016 Ronan by Clinet, the Bordeaux AC from Ronan Laborde of Château Clinet, has a clean, fresh, juicy red cherry and crushed strawberry bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with s...

2018 Jouanin, Cotes de Castillon
Back In Stock!
Thank the emerging region of Cotes de Castillon for this spectacular deal in red Bordeaux. This cuvee shares many qualities of top-flight St-Emilion, with a great sweetness of fruit along with vanilla and spicy notes from new oak. 2012 Sociando-Mallet, Haut-Médoc
Top Pick!
90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Once again proprietor Jean Gautreau has hit pay dirt with a beautiful blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Wonderfully sweet, ripe tannins seem to be a rule of thumb from this great terroir just to the north of St.-Estèphe’s Château Montrose. A beautiful deep ruby/purple color, decent acidity, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and stunning fruit put this wine right in the midst of the best classified crus from the Médoc, yet it has never been classified. Go figure. Softer than I would ...

90 points James Suckling: "A very rich and ripe red for this appellation. Full-bodied, round and juicy with ripe and round tannins. Dark-berry, brick and stone undertones. " (01/2019) Wine Enthusiast: "Fruit and tannins come together well in this ripe wine. Its structure will allow it to age while the berry flavors bring a fresh edge. Juicy and fruity, it has fine potential. (RV)" (02/2019) Wine Spectator: "Solid, with a core of warm cassis and raspberry puree flavors infused with a licorice note and backed by a frankly toasty finish. (JM)" (05/2019)...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The spectacular 2003 Pontet Canet is still incredibly young and vigorous. This full-bodied classic boasts a dense purple color as well as a superb nose of graphite, creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice and a hint of truffles, low acidity, and extravagant richness. Most of the tannins have been resolved in this superstar of the vintage. It should continue to drink well for 10-15+ years. (RP) 95+" (08/2014) 93 points James Suckling: "Pure ripe fruit on the nose with raspberries and blueberries. Full bodied, wi...

2015 Pauillac de Latour, Pauillac
Top Pick!
94 points James Suckling: "A firm and linear red with currant, blackberry and stone aromas and flavors. Full yet closed and tight. Acidity drives this one. Third wine of Paulliac. Serious. Needs two or three years to come together." (02/2018) 93 points Vinous: "Latour's 2015 Pauillac is gorgeous. Deep, pliant and super-expressive, the 2015 is utterly captivating. Silky tannins wrap around a core of fruit as this radiant, inviting wine shows off its charms. There is a level of purity to the 2015 that is remarkable. In the past, the Pauillac has at times...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend of just over 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Merlot (last year I mistakenly wrote that the balance was Cabernet Franc), the opaque ruby/purple-colored 2009 reveals notes of scorched earth/burning embers/charcoal, black currants, ripe cherries and lead pencil shavings. Full-bodied and pure with sweet tannin, this is an under-the-radar, high quality claret to drink over the next 20-25 years." 92-93 points James Suckling: "This is a wine that shows lots of chocolate, tobacco and currants. Full body, with velvety tannins and a long finish. All there." (04/2011) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From Helene Garcin, this blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot displays classic tobacco leaf and smoky barbecue notes along with rich black currants and crushed rocks in a medium to full-bodied, seductive, attractively up-front style. Some Asian plum sauce is also noticeable in this complex, evolved and delicious wine, which can be dru...

92 points James Suckling: "Aromas of currants, plums, and minerals follow through full body, with chewy tannins and a chewy finish. Needs time to soften. Serious depth to this wine. Better in 2015." (02/2013) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dark ruby/plum colored, with evolved notes of cedar wood, earth and underbrush, this wine possesses the classic tobacco leaf and black currants of a mid-level Medoc. It is medium-bodied, has good ripeness and should age nicely for 15 or more years." (02/2013) K&L Notes: *+V An elegant wine from good terroir. Full-...

99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Tasted at the domaine, the 1982 Leoville Las Cases is just about pure perfection, and while certainly mature, it has plenty of life ahead of it. Thrilling notes of blackcurrants, kirsch, tobacco leaf, cedar box, menthol, and exotic spices all emerge from this seamless, powerful yet magically elegant Leoville Las Cases. Opening up in the glass, with a smoky, singular character, it's an incredible wine from this terroir that has an almost Latour-like regal quality. It should continue drinking well for another 10-15 years and I'm sur...

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "From a 28.5-hectare vineyard overlooking the Gironde River on the northern side of Saint-Estephe, the 2016 Château Charmail is one of those hidden gems in the vintage that should be snatched up by readers. It’s a medium to full-bodied, elegant, classic wine that offers lots of darker fruits (cassis and blackberry), spice, new saddle leather, and leafy herbs as well as a kiss of damp earth. It has terrific balance and is going to keep for 15-20 years. The blend is 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and the rest...

93 points James Suckling: "The aromas of violets and flowers are impressive in this with dark fruit underneath. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh and bright finish. Shows beautiful depth and resilience. Drink from 2023." (02/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Tronquoy-Lalande has a deep garnet-purple color and nose of crushed blackberries and black cherries with herbs, cigar box and damp soil. Medium to full-bodied, it offers good concentration and depth with firm, fine-grained tannins, finishing long and per...

90-91 points James Suckling: "Tight and firm young wine with tar and berry flavors that follow through to a medium body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. " (03/2019) K&L Notes: Located to the west of Castillon-la-Bataille, this vineyard is close in geography and style to Saint-Émilion. The 2018 delivers a rich texture from the ripe Merlot as well as generous, warm berry fruits. At the same time, the wine has a light touch of acidity and a crisp aftertaste.

99 points Decanter: "This has to be up there with one of the most seductive Comtesses on record with layers of alternating softness and concentration combined with a lot of 2016’s elegance and power. The nose on this stands out a mile, getting it right up on the podium before you even take a sip. Rich raspberries combine with peonies and curls of woodsmoke while the appellation’s signature slate, cedar, liquorice and tannic grip slowly builds up on the palate. I’ve tasted this several times with each conveying a juiciness and elegance that is quite diffe...

97-99 points Wine Enthusiast: "This estate continues its stately quality progress with a vintage that brings out great richness as well as a serious, structured side. The blueberry flavors are shot through with tannins that contrasts with the wine's succulent fruitiness. As the wine matures, that fruit will shape the wine's future as much as the tannins. This is for the long term. (RV)" (06/2020) 96-98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Another tremendous wine from this estate, the 2019 Château Calon Ségur comes from 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 12% Cabernet ...

The second label of Grand Enclos du Château de Cérons. Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sauvignon Gris. A K&L staff favorite for value in Bordeaux Blanc.

91 points James Suckling: "15 Feb, 2017 – Quite a lot of smoky oak and lots of slightly chewy tannins. A fairly flashy wine that could do with better harmony. But there’s some attractiveness in terms of the ripe fruit and spices on the finish. Needs time to be tamed. Drink in 2019." (02/2017) 90 points Vinous: "The 2014 Saint-Paul has developed into a delicate, elegant Haut-Médoc over the last two years, but without losing its essential energy and persistence. Today, the Saint-Paul is a bit less exuberant than it was from barrel, but it has gained poli...

97-100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "In the running for the wine of the vintage in Saint-Estèphe (if not the whole Medoc), the 2018 Château Calon Ségur is a tentative blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Petit Verdot that will spend 20 months in new French oak. In comparison to the more backward Montrose and more classically styled Cos d’Estournel, this beauty is as sexy and opulent as Saint-Estèphe gets, revealing a saturated purple color, awesome notes of crème de cassis, crushed rocks, spicy oak, and cedar pencil, fu...

2017 Canon, St-Emilion
Top Pick!
97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Showing spectacularly, the 2017 Chateau Canon checks in as a final blend of 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc that’s from one of the most exceptional terroirs in the appellation. Hitting 14% alcohol (the pH is 3.66), it reveals a ruby/purple hue as well as gorgeously sweet raspberries and cassis-like fruit interwoven with notes of spring flowers, rose petal, white chocolate, and spice. While it doesn’t have the massive opulence of the 2015 and 2016, it’s more classically styled as well flawlessly balanced, with a terrific sense of...

" (04/2019) 91-93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2018 Château Lespault-Martillac is terrific, and despite having gravellier, draining soils, the Graves region turned out plenty of beautiful wines in the vintage. This deeply colored effort offers medium to full-bodied richness and notable elegance to go with classic aromas of crème de cassis, crushed rock, earthy forest ...

Coming in as one of the most lovely and forward value Bordeaux in our inventory, the Graves rouge from Château Trébiac is predominantly Merlot with about 1/3 Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate is around 70 acres planted on a gravelly plateau 35km south of Bordeaux proper, capably managed by Arnaud de Butler. It displays all the upfront richness and charm of the 2018 vintage with no shortage of vibrance and freshness. Just a fantastic Tuesday night pairing for a wide array of dishes.

(04/2019) 98-100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "'We produced great Cabernet Franc this year,' Directeur Général Pierre Graffeuille told me during my visit to Léoville Las Cases. 91-93 points Vinous: "The 2017 Les Ormes de Pez was matured in 45% new oak with 13.42% alcohol. None of the vines were touched by frost. Cropped at round 50hl/ha, it has a clean, pure red cherry, blackcurrant and cedar-scented bouquet, more Pauillac in style than Saint-Estèphe. The palate is well balanced with ripe tannin that feel more malleable than previous vintages at this stage, a little saline in the mouth with a silky smooth finish. This will be delicious over the next couple of decades and I suspect it will be more approachable than the 2016. Don...
