Bordeaux

Bordeaux

We're extremely focused on Bordeaux - several staff members fly over to the region on multiple trips each year to taste new vintages from barrel and older vintages from bottle. K&L also enjoys excellent relationships with negociants and châteaux, and over the years we've established outstanding allocations on the top wines. It hasn't hurt that one of K&L's owners is a complete Bordeaux fanatic and our main buyer. The top red wines are typically blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and the white are primarily Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, though the blends vary substantially depending on which part of the region you're talking about. Within Bordeaux you'll also find the sweet wines of Sauternes. Interested in great Bordeaux? Look no further...

Jeb Dunnuck: "Made with help of Jean-Luc Thunevin, the 2016 Château Lafont Fourcat is a larger production cuvée from vines near Castillon. It's a total winner and offers lots of black and blue fruits, plenty of leafy herbs, and hints of tobacco, medium body, supple tannins, and terrific balance. It's another sleeper readers should snatch up and drink over the coming 4-5 years." (02/2019) James Suckling: "Bold and crisp with a slew of cherries, this is generous, basic red Bordeaux with a slightly sappy finish. Drink or hold." (02/2019) Vinous: "The 20...

(07/2014) 90-92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Firm tannins, but also ripe, sweet fruits, with a fine balance. While the wine is on the light, fresh side, it does have a good, final structure. (RV)" (04/2010) Jancis Robinson: "Rich dark plum fruit but also meaty and savoury - a wine with attitude. Smooth and pretty dense, just about fresh. (JH)" (10/2011) K&L Notes: At ...

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Consistently one of the top, under-the-radar wines of Pessac-Leognan, Haut-Bergey's beautiful 2006 boasts a deep ruby/purple hue as well as a classic bouquet of hot rocks intermixed with graphite, cassis, incense, and charcoal. Medium to full-bodied with noticeable but sweet tannin, impressive purity, and an alluring texture, it is relatively evolved for a 2006, so consumption over the next 15 years is recommended. Offering blockbuster notes of crème de cassis, burning embers, violets, graphite, and liquid rock-like minerality, it shows the more elegant style of the vintage on the palate yet builds with air, revealing incredible concentration and depth of fruit, loads of tannins, and a mammoth-sized finish. 2006 Arnauld, Haut-Médoc
Top Pick!
Chateau Arnauld is located between Margaux and Moulis, on a large gravel outcropping on the edge of the Gironde, neighboring Chasse-Spleen and Poujeaux. The oceanic breezes off the Gironde estuary keep vines cool, promoting long, even ripening for the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot planted to these mineral-rich, high-draining soils. The blend is typically about half Cabernet and half Merlot, often with a bit more Cabernet. The wines are made in a traditional style made to withstand the cellar: black-fruited with spicy complexity from barrel, a rich midpal...

91-92 points James Suckling: "A big and fruity wine for the appellation with round and chewy tannins. Lots going on. Serious. Best ever?" (04/2019) Vinous: "The 2018 Renon is a plump, juicy red to drink over the near and medium-term. Ripe red cherry, cedar, tobacco, mint and wild flowers grace this attractive, mid-weight Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon blend. (AG)" (04/2019) K&L Notes: This 19-hectare property, which was named by the Franciscan monks who created the vineyard, is located along the Garonne river in Bordeaux Supérieur. 50% Merlot, 25% Caberne...

92 points Decanter: "2015 was an exceptional vintage in this part of the world, making many second wines a shrewd value purchase. Luckily this doesn't disappoint, although I cannot recommend highly enough that you go for the 2010 at this point, as the 2015 is still extremely young and tight. You can feel a touch of heat on the finish from the alcohol, which is indiscernible in the grand vin, but you can entirely forgive it given its finesse combined with a swirl of cinnamon and a lick of fun. (JA)" (11/2017) 90-91 points James Suckling: "A tight and fo...

2001 Haut-Bergey, Pessac-Léognan

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A sexy combination of blueberry, blackberry, and raspberry fruit in addition to graphite and barbecue spices jumps from the glass of this earthy, soft, medium-bodied 2001. (RP)" (06/2004) Vinous: "Aromatic nose combines candied dark berries and violet. Sweet and pliant but bright, with ripe acids giving it excellent balance. Juicy, fresh, persistent wine, finishing with firm, ripe, palate-dusting tannins. A very good vintage for this chateau. (ST)"
Price: $29.99

93 points James Suckling: "Ripe and generous with lovely freshness. This is a very elegant Haut-Médoc that has excellent balance and a long, almost silky finish that makes it easy to enjoy right now. Drink or hold." (02/2019) 91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Lamarque has a very refined bouquet with gorgeous aromas of blackberry, cedar and pressed flowers that unfurls beautifully in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with quite robust and firm tannin, but the fruit is so pure that you barely notice its arching structure. It deli...

Price: $18.99

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another superb over-achiever from the appellation of Moulis in the Medoc, this wine, a blend of 48% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, shows lots of licorice, barbecue smoke, charcuterie, plum and black currants. It hits the palate with a medium to full-bodied opulence. The tannins are sweet and the acidity adequate to provide definition and vibrancy. This is a beauty. An outstanding effort from proprietors, the Flageul family. (RP)" (02/2013) 90 points Wine Spectator: ...

91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Showing a beautiful limestone minerality and focus, the 2016 Château d'Arce offers a terrific perfume of savory red and black fruits, dried herbs, flowers, and loamy soil. With medium to full body, notable tannins, and terrific purity, it has rock solid depth and richness on the palate and is going to benefit from short term cellaring but keep for a decade." (02/2019) 91 points James Suckling: "Very pretty red already with plums and currants and salty and earthy undertones. Medium body, firm tannins and a fresh finish." (04/2019...

2019 Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac 6-Pack in OWC (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
98-100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A truly great Lafite, and maybe the wine of the vintage, the 2019 Château Lafite-Rothschild reveals a deep purple color as well as an ultra-classic bouquet of crème de cassis, lead pencil, unsmoked tobacco, chocolate, and gravelly minerality. Deep, full-bodied, and flawlessly balanced, it's a magical, heavenly bottle of wine that's going to be approachable with just 5-6 years of bottle age yet evolve for 100 years or more. It reminds me of the 2016, only with a touch more sexiness and opulence." (06/2020) 99-100 points James...

2010 Valentons-Canteloup Bordeaux Supérieur

Chateau Valentons-Canteloup Bordeaux Superieur is a family-owned property that sits just along the Dordogne river in Bordeaux. 99 points James Suckling: "The aromas to this are phenomenal with oyster shell, blackberries, iodine and black truffles. Full-bodied, layered and so refined and intense. Love the texture and intensity. Chalky. Amazing. Goes on for minutes. Try in 2023." (02/2018) 97 points Vinous: "The 2015 Larcis Ducasse is just as compelling from bottle as it was from barrel. Rose petal, lavender, spice and mint give it an attractive upper register that melds seamlessly into a core of inky red and purplish fruit. Dense, powerful and overt, the 2015 also has quite a b...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The spectacular 2003 Pontet Canet is still incredibly young and vigorous. This full-bodied classic boasts a dense purple color as well as a superb nose of graphite, creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice and a hint of truffles, low acidity, and extravagant richness. Most of the tannins have been resolved in this superstar of the vintage. It should continue to drink well for 10-15+ years. The 90% of cabernet sauvignon really makes this special. Lead-pencil, tar and licorice notes. Powerful with finesse. Extremely persistent." (05/2020) 98-100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The blend this year is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, harvested from the 18th of September to the 5th of October. 100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Unquestionably one of the top 2-3 wines of the vintage, the 2016 Château Montrose is a monument in the making. Checking in as a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc raised in 60% new French oak (the balance was in once-used barrels) and representing a tiny 36% of the production, this deep purple-colored 2016 possesses powerful, incredibly classic Saint-Estephe notes of creme de cassis, graphite, damp earth, lead pencil shavings, and burning embers. With a powerful, full-bodied style on the palate, a ...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Beautifully sweet, slightly herbaceous black currant, licorice, and earthy notes emerge from this nearly opaque, dark ruby/purple-tinged 1982. Compared to the more elegant, feminine-styled wine often produced here, it is a beast. Dense, thick, rich, concentrated, and impressive, it can be drunk now and over the next two decades. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A big, virile, masculine style of wine, this 2005 has a dense ruby/purple color and loads of cassis, earth, minerals and spice. 2010 Bel-Orme Tronquoy de Lalande, Haut-Médoc

90 points James Suckling: "Attractive nose with loads of candied violets, raspberries and rose petals. Plum and some licorice. Full and nice texture on the palate with charming fruit and fine tannins. Enjoyable finish with medium length and a tasty licorice note. Drink from 2016." (06/2013) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at Château Rauzan-Gassies. 2016 Valandraud, St-Émilion
Top Pick!
98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Including 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Merlot-dominated 2016 Château Valandraud is a brilliant example of this cuvée that should match or exceed the incredible 2015 at maturity. Brought up all in new oak, its deep purple color is followed by a powerful bouquet of crème de cassis, graphite, smoked earth, and hints of earth. Possessing full-bodied richness, thrilling purity of fruit, ripe tannins, and just about perfect balance, it's another tour de force from the incredibly talented Jean-Luc Thunevin. It's slig...

About this producer: "A beautiful mansion rebuilt in the nineteenth century overlooking the vineyard. A few steps, Roland’s hillock monitors the vines such as an ancestral vineyard keeper. The land of Château Roland La Garde is marked of history and gives to the men who cultivate it the will of excelling. Terroir, tradition and great wine blend well in this place. (02/2018) 96 points Vinous: "The 2015 Malartic Lagravière is just as fabulous from bottle as it was from barrel. Rich, voluptuous and dramatic, it captures all of the natural intensity of the year. This needs more time. Still tight and structured. (JS, Web-2010)" 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Leoville-Barton ’99 has a well-defined nose, more restrained and extrovert than the Langoa, with notes of blackberry, wild hedgerow/woodland, Chinese tea and a dash of white pepper. 2019 Tour St-Christophe, St-Emilion (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)

95-97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "From an estate that continues to fire on all cylinders, the 2019 Château Tour Saint Christophe reveals a saturated purple color to go with a pretty, floral bouquet of black raspberries, mulberries, violets, graphite, and crushed stone. Fabulously balanced, medium to full-bodied, with good acidity as well as sweet tannins, it's a finesse oriented, elegant version of this cuvée that does everything right. This estate has backed off the power and ripeness over the past few vintages, and the wine is more elegant, balanced, and seam...

2010 Pape Clément, Pessac-Léognan
Top Pick!
100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I certainly underrated the 2010 Pape Clement from barrel, rating it only 93-95+. (Thank God I put a 'plus' there!) Having tasted it four times in Bordeaux, and rating it perfect three times and 99 the fourth time, this final blend of 51% Merlot, 47.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1.5% Petit Verdot is perfection in a bottle. Tipping the scales at 14.5% natural alcohol, there are 8,000 cases of it. 2005 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
Top Pick!
96 points James Suckling: "A meaty and decadent Lynch with very ripe currant aromas on the nose. Full body, velvety-textured tannins and a powerful finish. It shows so much structure and fruit yet remains polished and focused." (10/2015) 96 points Wine & Spirits: "There's a relaxed feel to this wine. Cazes's team can dress Lynch-Bages in the black-tie formality of a first growth, but the wine is still lovely-a touch of gaminess makes it friendly rather than ponderous. There's something ethereal about its tannins, like a chocolate truffle melting in the...

96 points Decanter: "Inky purple in colour, with peony and iris aromatics, then a whoosh of freshness that makes your mouth water before you are even halfway through. This is extremely impressive, well balanced, with fine tannins and real discretion but hidden power and depths. Clear floral character, with an austerity that makes you celebrate minerality. There are gourmet touches but the focus is rather on slate, rosemary and crushed stones with hints of chocolate shavings alongside the damson and blackberry fruit. 3.56pH, 80% in casks, 11% 20hl wood an...
