2015 Elio Grasso Vigna Martina Barbera d'Alba

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 vintage is an important one for Barbera. Elio Grasso's 2015 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Martina is a solid and powerful wine that embraces the opulence and richness that distinguishes this singular grape variety. Barbera vines are planted at the edges of the Nebbiolo crus, and most of these plants were first put there by Gianluca's dad or his grandfather. The vines range in age from 45 to 70 years old. Planting philosophies tend to be passed down through the generations, from father to son, in these parts. The ...Read More »

2011 Vigneti Massa "Monleale" Barbera

Walter Massa is the real deal: a farmer with deep family roots in his native Colli Tortonesi who’s usually plowing his vineyards or buzzing around his cellar when someone arrives for a visit. According to the winery's importer, Massa is universally known as the Maestro of Timorasso — he rescued it from obscurity and near-extinction and now leads a mini-renaissance of the variety in the Colli Tortonesi. But he also produces amazing and distinctive reds from the local varieties Barbera, Croatina, Freisa, and Nebbiolo. Wine notes: All the classic Barbera ch ...Read More »

2013 Cascina Ca' Rossa "Vigna Mulassa" Barbera d'Alba

90 points Wine & Spirits: "Starting with saturated flavors of black cherry and plum, this gains scents of black spice, licorice and iodine that take it into a darker spectrum. Floral scents lend a delicacy to the rich fruit flavors, and a note of eucalyptus lifts the wine’s warm richness." (12/2016)

2015 Torti Barbera Oltrepo Pavese

90 points James Suckling: "A fresh and firm red with blackberries, spices and a cedar character. Some rose petals, too. Medium body and a chewy finish. Drink now or hold." (06/2018) K&L Notes: The Barbera grapes for this wine were grown in vineyards dating back to the early 19th century. It's a vibrant ruby red in the glass with a dry, full body. Thanks to the long growing season in this northern part of Italy, the wine develops gorgeous acid that makes it a perfect accompaniment to roasted and braised meats.

2015 Silvia Rivella Barbera d'Alba

Guido Rivella had a multi-decade career as the winemaker for Angelo Gaja. Now retired, he and his daughter have a tiny estate in Barbaresco. This Barbera comes from a vineyard next to the Barbaresco vineyard "Cole." It is an eastern-facing, 1.4-acre piece. The wine is fermented in stainless steel for 12-14 days and then aged in used barrique for six months. Barbera has naturally high acid, but this wine shows exceptional balance and is supple and layered, with complex earthy aromatics.

2014 Elvio Cogno Pre-Phyloxera Barbera d'Alba

90 points Wine Spectator: "Bracing acidity carries the cherry, blackberry and spice flavors to a long conclusion in this concentrated red. A mineral element emerges on the aftertaste. Drink now through 2020. (BS)" (11/2016) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Elvio Cogno 2014 Barbera d'Alba Prefilossera is a darkly extracted and thick wine that shows some serious muscle. This is a big-boned Barbera that exudes power and concentration with Morello cherry, tobacco and barbecue smoke. The mouthfeel is thick, but slightly shorter in this vintage. (ML)" (06 ...Read More »

2015 Agostino Pavia "Bricco Blina" Barbera d'Asti

From Oliver McCrum Wines: "The Asti and Monferrato areas of Piedmont, east of the Barolo zone, are Barbera country. Barbera may be indigenous to this region, and (although grown elsewhere in Italy and increasingly here in California) finds its best expressions here, ranging from bright, raspberryish wines aged in stainless steel, to darker, more substantial examples aged in small French oak. Agliano is one of the best-known Barbera villages in the Asti zone. Agostino Pavia and his sons Giuseppe ('Pino') and Mauro make two styles of Barbera from two diff ...Read More »

2015 Agostino Pavia "Moliss" Barbera d'Asti

90 points Decanter: "Fragrant black cherry aromas. Juicy, ripe and expressive, with good freshness. This is rustic and polished at the same time. A well made, simple and easy-drinking style." (05/2018) K&L Notes: Agostino Pavia and his sons Giuseppe ('Pino') and Mauro make two styles of Barbera from two different single vineyards, less than five thousand cases in all. Barbera d'Asti used to have a reputation for having acidity like that of a car battery, apparently due to high yields and an occasional lack of malolactic fermentation. These wines are di ...Read More »

2015 Cascina Ca' Rossa "Vigna Mulassa" Barbera d'Alba

Ca'Rossa was founded in 1967 when Alfonso Ferrio bought a small farmhouse and estate growing hazelnuts, vegetables, and raising chickens. Cascina Ca Rossa is located in the Roero area of Piemonte. With calcareous soils, high temperatures and very little rain, the area was under vine during the Roman era, home to Nebbiolo, Barbera and Arneis, a scented, dry white grape. At Cascina Ca Rossa, two distinct styles of wine are produced. The first style which could be considered "normale", pertains to vintage dated wines that are fermented in steel barrels and ...Read More »

2015 Cascina Val del Prete "Serra de Gatti" Barbera d'Alba (Previously $20)

Vinous: "Cascina Val del Prete's Barbera d'Alba Serra de' Gatti is always a fun, tasty wine, as it is again in 2015. Drink this juicy, flamboyant Barbera over the next few years while the cherry, plum, new leather and sweet spice flavors retain their youthful exuberance. (AG)" (02/2017)

2016 Vigneti Massa "Sentieri" Barbera

From importer PortoVino: "Walter [Massa] farms 22 hectares in eight distinct vineyard areas. Total production at Massa is about 13,000 cases, of which 5,000 is Timorasso. He produces amazing reds as well from the local grapes (Croatina, Barbera, Freisa, Nebbiolo). Most bottles of Barbera fail to answer the question of whether the grape, with a touch of wood, can truly age (instead of merely keep). Massa’s Barbera Monleale is the start of an answer; we’ve tasted examples going back 15 years, and we periodically bring in some library wines for you to taste ...Read More »

2013 Elvio Cogno "Bricco Merli" Barbera d'Alba

91 points James Suckling: "Lots of dried berry, apple and lemon aromas and flavors. Medium to full body, outstanding acid tension and a long and flavorful finish. " (10/2015) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Barbera d'Alba Bricco dei Merli is a dark and generous wine that is loaded tight with bright fruit flavors. The Cogno family describes it as having the exuberance of the 2011 vintage and the elegance of 2012. It's true that 2013 marches to the beat of its own drum with pretty fruit contours surrounded by a fringe of spice and ligh ...Read More »
