2017 Cary Q "New Beginnings - Shake Ridge Ranch" Amador County Grenache

Winemaker's Notes: "Picked on a Harvest moon at 3 am on October 4th, 2017, this was our very first year working with Amador County fruit. I am extremely grateful for this gorgeous, organically farmed, Shake Ridge Ranch fruit. The 2017 vintage was a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. The Syrah fruit folded in a rustic, old-world flare that ignited the lighthearted Grenache with a bit more structure and balance. This vintage is easy, light and very approachable with alcohol coming in at 14.1%. This year produced unusually light-skinned grapes, therefore, ...Read More »

2017 Shenandoah Vineyards "Special Reserve" Amador County Zinfandel

From the winery: "Leon and Shirley Sobon founded Shenandoah Vineyards in 1977. They were one of the first four wineries in Amador County's now well known Shenandoah Valley appellation. From the first offering of 1,200 cases, the winery has continued to thrive, adjusting the portfolio of wines over the years. It is now producing about 25,000 cases per year. Demand continues to grow as a result of skilled winemaking, marketing, and strong family commitments to quality and service. 2017 Sobon Estate "Lubenko Vineyard" Fiddletown Zinfandel New!
2017 Sobon Estate "Lubenko Vineyard" Fiddletown Zinfandel

Shenandoah Vineyards in Plymouth, CA, was founded in 1977 by Shirley and Leon Sobon. They moved from Los Altos, California, where Leon was a Senior Scientist with the Lockheed Research Lab. Leon's gift for home winemaking led him to leave Lockheed and begin a new career as a Winemaker. The selection of a winery site in the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County was well researched. Leon and Shirley and their six children moved to the old Steiner Ranch, outside Plymouth, CA, planted a vineyard, and converted the old stone garage to the Shenandoah Vineyards ...Read More »

2014 Turley "Sadie Upton" Amador County Zinfandel

93 points Vinous: "The 2014 Zinfandel Sadie Upton Vineyard is endowed with real class and personality. Deep, dense and beautifully centered, the 2014 speaks to poise and balance. Succulent red cherry, pomegranate, spice, cedar and tobacco meld into the deep, fleshy finish, while polished tannins add to the wine's total finesse. (AG)" (12/2016) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another Amador offering (from vines planted in 1922 during Prohibition) is the 2014 Zinfandel Sadie Upton Vineyard, an expressive wine with loads of raspberry, cherry and ...Read More »

2014 Turley "Judge Bell" Amador Valley Zinfandel

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Absolutely sumptuous, the 2014 Zinfandel Judge Bell Vineyard (planted in 1907) is another Amador County cuvée, coming in at 15.5% alcohol. This is a big, dark, full-bodied wine with expressive aromatics of sweet red, blue and black fruits, spice, a dash of pepper, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and Turley’s signature hallmark of purity and vibrant fruit nicely balanced by acidity and sweet tannin. Hedonistic, but also intellectually satisfying, this big, juicy Amador Zinfandel should drink well for 5-6 years. All told ...Read More »

2016 Sobon Estate "Lubenko Vineyard" Fiddletown Zinfandel

90 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Ripe and a tad softer in texture than its mate above but no less robust in its outgoing, zesty, concentrated character, this wine is perhaps more destined for fans of the style simply because there is very little held back here. Like the ReZerve, it can benefit from cellar aging, but the rewards are likely to be somewhat less clear, and this is the kind of full-blooded wine that we are more likely to consume with post-prandial cheeses and walnuts than with a typically savory Zinfandel dish like grilled sausages or pork chop ...Read More »

2016 Skinner El Dorado Mourvedre

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This classy wine offers a mix of spice rack and black cherry aromas, with rich plum, earth and rhubarb flavors. There is balance between ripeness of fruit and tension from the tannins and acidity. It stands on it own as a beautifully complex but not heavy wine. (JG)" (11/2018) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Distinctive, plump and showing personality, this offers flavors of dried cherry, fruitcake spices and orange peel that end with zesty tannins. Winemaker's Notes: "The 2017 Mourvedre from the Goldbud Vineyard has a deep violet hue and exotic, heady aromas of lilacs, lavender, mulberry and boysenberry, black pepper, anise and petrichor. The palate shows a brilliant range of flavors from plum skin and candied violets to ginger, lacquered apple and Chinese Five Spice. These grapes were lovingly lady foot-stomped. 33% whole cluster adds a brambly aroma and rich texture. Sustainably farmed. Aged in neutral French oak barrels. 13.5% alcohol. 208 cases."

2013 Turley "Cobb Vineyard" Amador County Zinfandel

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A lighter Zinfandel (although by no means should the word 'wimpy' be implied), the 2013 Zinfandel Cobb Vineyard from Amador tips the scales at 15.3% alcohol. This higher elevation vineyard (1500 feet) planted in volcanic and granite soils has produced a more finesse-styled and aromatic Zinfandel. It possesses a touch of austerity, but beautiful, almost Pinot Noir-inspired black cherry and berry fruit. Some minerality again makes an appearance in the wine. 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Zinfandel Buck Cobb Vineyard from volcanic, granitic soils in Amador County, displays a darker fruit character, a similar dark ruby/purple color, earth, tar and deep, rich berry fruit. It cuts a relatively broad swath across the palate and conceals any sense of heat or its power (15.3% alcohol). Delicious, round, seductive and juicy, this is also a wine to drink over the next 5-6 years. 2017 Rootdown "St. Amant Vineyard" Amador County Trousseau

Winemaker's Notes: "This Trousseau sings on the nose with wild green strawberry, delicate violet, and fresh soft herbs straight from a bright summer garden. The palate circles around polished fruit: watermelon, cran-apple, red currant, black cherry, and tart raspberry with lingering dried plum. All the while notes of crunchy pickles offset silky rose petals and dusty black licorice. 2013 Turley "Judge Bell" Amador Valley Zinfandel

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Zinfandel Judge Bell comes from a block of vines planted in 1907 known as Picnic Hill Block in the Story Vineyard. These are classic head-pruned, dry-farmed, ungrafted vines planted eight years before the beginning of World War I. One of the best Amador Zinfandels I’ve ever tasted, this wine displays plenty of briary raspberry, black and red cherry as well as boysenberry fruit, good underlying structure, some earth, pepper, meat and spice. 2013 Turley "Sadie Upton" Amador County Zinfandel

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From an Amador County site, the 2013 Zinfandel Sadie Upton Vineyard (15.5% alcohol) comes from vines planted in 1922 at the rather impressive elevation of 1500 feet. This is an aromatic, medium-bodied Zinfandel despite the lofty alcohol. The soil is said to consist of lots of granite, quartz, and silica, and those elements are evidenced in the wine’s minerality, its almost Pinot Noir-like perfume, and moderate weight. This is a beauty, not a blockbuster Zinfandel, but one of enormous charm, endearing ripe fruit, ...Read More »

Winemaker's notes: "The 2016 wine has a purple color of substantial depth and the hues are a youthfully bright garnet. The aroma is loaded with classic Zinfandel fruit; black raspberry, dark cherry and boysenberry. The bouquet has a hazelnut and nutmeg scent contributed by the small oak barrels that aged this wine for fourteen months. The flavors are juicy, luscious, and round. Former Pax assistant winemaker Duncan Arnot Meyers and cooper Nathan Roberts produce beautiful, terroir-driven, varietally pure small production wines. From the producer: "The Gamay Noir vines at the Barsotti and Witters vineyards in El Dorado are maturing, and we feel the wine we are making from these two sites is getting better every year. 2012 Keplinger "Diamond Bar - Fair Play" Amador County Syrah

White flowers, crushed rocks, lavender and purple/black fruit blossom in a dark, brooding wine long on personality and pure class. This is a fabulous first effort. Sweet herbs, flowers, mint and anise develop in the glass adding attractive overtones. The firm tannins need a few years to soften, but all the elements are in the right place. 2015 Renwood Fiddletown Zinfandel

Connoisseurs Guide: "Vanillin oak makes a big play for attention right from the start here and is a sustained, but not overly pushy adjunct to this one's principal theme of well-defined, berry-like fruit. While the wine begins on a supple note that briefly suggests that it's a Zinfandel best tagged for drinking in the short term, it tightens and firms up in a hurry and shows the tannic, Amador grip of one that, in fact, warrants a bit of time before rounding in to its best. Hasty drinking is not advised here, and its path to better will extend for anothe ...Read More »
