1970 Phélan Ségur, St-Estephe (Very High Shoulder Fill) Back In Stock!
1970 Phélan Ségur, St-Estephe (Very High Shoulder Fill)

One of a few notable Bordeaux chateaux established by an Irish immigrant, Chateau Phelan-Segur was formed in the early 1800s by wine merchant Bernard O’Phelan of Tipperary. The estate grew to be one of the largest in St-Estèphe before being sold in 1883 to the Delon family that held it until 1984. The estate's proximity to the estuary of the Gironde and soils of alluvial gravel over sandy clay have produced several vintages of exceptional wines.

The opaque purple color gives way to a medium to full-bodied, tannic, backward wine with terrific purity, a sweet, concentrated mid-palate, and a long, blockbuster finish. This wine remains one of the finest values from the luxury-priced 1996 vintage, and is well-worth purchasing by readers who are willing to invest 5-6 years of patience; it should keep for tw ...Read More »

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Dark red, no doubt somewhat lightened by the mise Ripe, expressive nose offers black raspberry, mocha, chocolate, leather, minerals and nutty oak. Lush, sappy and sweet, with a sucrosite rare for Bordeaux from the Medoc. Wonderfully full without coming across as heavy; this one has sex appeal and class. Finishes with sweet tannins and impressive length. This wine is higher in acidity, pH and tannin level than the '06, according to Duboscq; the finished alcohol is 13.7%. One of the great vintages here ...Read More »

2016 Phélan-Ségur, St-Estèphe (Pre-Arrival)

94-95 points James Suckling: "A super fragrant red with blackberry and blueberry aromas plus hints of blackcurrants. Full-bodied, powerful and structured. Tannic. Very long finish. A muscular and intense wine." (04/2017) 94 points Decanter: "They finished picking here on 25th October, one of the latest ever harvests at Phélan. Feathery tannins and a fresh, ripe but crunchy aspect to the fruit gives a real sense of vivacity and grip. I love the dark pepper spice that clamps around the fruit on the second half of the palate. This is an excellent vintage ...Read More »

2009 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe (1.5L)

100 points James Suckling: "This is amazing as always with layers of fruit and firm, velvety tannins. Full body, incredible depth of fruit and length. Currants, raspberries and Indian spices. It goes on for minutes. A monumental Cos. Greatest ever from here. Better in five years, but amazing." (11/2015) 100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the greatest young wines I have ever tasted, the monumental 2009 Cos d’Estournel has lived up to its pre-bottling potential. 1999 Lafon Rochet, St. Estephe

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Scents of dried Provencal herbs, spicy new oak, red currants, and a hint of cassis jump from the glass of this dark ruby/plum-colored 1999. The wine is soft and seductive, with cherry and licorice characteristics discernable in the flavors. (RP)" (04/2002) Wine Spectator: "Aromas of plum and sweet basil. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a medium finish. Caressing and delicious. Ready to go now. (JS, Web-2007)"

2016 Les Pagodes de Cos, St-Estèphe (Pre-Arrival)

93-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "The tannins are really deceptive in this wine. It is sumptuous and elegant at the same time. The black currant fruit and acidity are a foil for the powerful tannic structure. Balanced and rich in fruit, it is ready for some serious, but not too long, aging. (RV)" (04/2017) 93-94 points James Suckling: "The brightness and focus to this second wine of Cos are certainly impressive. You can see the quality. Full body, a tight and focused palate and beautiful fruit and density. Ultra-fine tannins. Gorgeous. Sophisticated." (04 ...Read More »

2016 La Dame de Montrose, St-Estèphe

93-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "While the wine has opulence and richness, it also has a more severe side that is classic for Montrose. It maintains the packed fruit of the vintage in both tannins and juicy blackberry fruit. This is a wine for drinking after 10–12 years. (RV)" (04/2017) 93 points Vinous: "A gorgeous second wine, the 2016 La Dame de Montrose is incredibly expressive today. Supple, radiant and inviting, La Dame has all the potential to be an overachiever in this vintage. Today, it is quite open, and, even more importantly, flat-out delicio ...Read More »

2010 Le Crock, St-Estèphe (1.5L)

92-94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Big and tannic, very firm and tough. Yet all the fruit is there, offering great potential. There is a ripe, juicy aftertaste. Under the same ownership as Château Léoville-Poyferré in Saint-Julien." (06/2011) 91 points James Suckling: "A wine with blueberry and mineral character on the nose and a palate. Dried spices. Full body, with chewy tannins and a tangy finish. Needs time to soften. Better in 2016." (03/2013) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Offers a good beam of cassis and briar, with singed anise, lilac and black tea n ...Read More »
