2016 Chateau de la Charriere Chassagne-Montrachet "Les Champs Morjot"

From the winery: "The Girardin family has cultivated the vine for 13 generations, and the domaine developed in the sixties thanks to Jean Girardin, notably with the acquisition of Château de la Charrière. Having passed his childhood amongst the vines and in the cellar, Yves developed a passion for all aspects of wine and its culture. In 1981 the family holding of 12 hectares was divided, and Yves found himself at the head of 3 hectares. Wishing to grow and diversify his range of appellations, he bought vines at Chassagne-Montrachet and Pommard and toda ...Read More »

2015 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Vergers"

93 points John Gilman: "The Fontaine family’s parcel of vines in Vergers lie right on the border with Clos St. Jean and celebrated their forty-fifth birthday in 2015. This too is a classic expression of Vergers, delivering a fine aromatic constellation of pear, tangerine, chalky soil tones, citrus zest, spring flowers and a deft framing of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and a touch more reserved in personality than the Chenevottes, with a fine core and excellent cut and grip on the long and nicely soil-driven finish. Give this a ye ...Read More »

2016 Domaine Marc Colin St. Aubin 1er Cru "Cuvee 3C"

91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A very pretty nose exhibits mostly floral scents that displays background notes of white peach, citrus zest and matchstick. There is a fleshy mouth feel to the very round and solidly concentrated middle weight flavors that culminate in a sappy, stony, saline and impressively complex finale. This is well-worth considering. *Sweet Spot*" (06/2018) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru "3C" is a multi-vineyard blend caused by frost damage (see producer introduction for details). 2016 Olivier Leflaive Chassagne-Montrachet

89-91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Ripe aromas are composed by notes of rosemary oil, resin, pear and a phenolic hint. There is once again very good energy to the palate soaking flavors that possess excellent power for a villages level wine, all wrapped in a solidly complex, structured and persistent finish. Fine quality here and worth your interest." (06/2018) 90 points James Suckling: "A lemony and fresh white with limes and hints of white pepper. Medium-bodied, vivid and fruity. A fluid finish. 2014 Domaine Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Clos de la Maltroie"

94 points Wine Spectator: "A powerful, viscous white, with floral, lemon oil and mineral notes. Delivers good acidity and a chalky sensation, leaving a juicy impression on the finish. Best from 2018 through 2028. (BS)" (05/2017) 91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is also quite strongly reduced so some time in a decanter would be beneficial. There is outstanding richness to the seductively textured and opulent flavors that coat the palate with dry extract while the citrus-tinged acidity is sufficiently firm to maintain the balance on the saline- ...Read More »

2017 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Clos Saint-Jean" (Pre-Arrival)

95 points Decanter: "Michel Coutoux has three parcels inside the Clos, totalling 0.5ha and planted in 1992, 1996 and 2005. True to his winemaking style, which is especially well suited to 2017, this shows sea breeze and oyster-shell aromas, lots of wet stone minerality, scented oak and a core of citrus fruit. (TA)" (12/2018) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean is one of the highlights of the Niellon portfolio this year, unwinding in the glass with notes of pear, lemon, toast, nutmeg and subtle ...Read More »

By contrast there is excellent volume to the muscular medium-bodied flavors that possess an attractive sense of tension that adds lift to the opulent but not heavy finish where a hint of bitter lemon peel arises. *Outstanding*" (06/2016) 91 points Vinous: "Pure but mute nose hints at white peach, pineapple, citrus fruits and white flowers. A step up in texture and concentration from the preceding premier crus, offering generous flavors of yellow peach and spices. Finishes impressively long and lively. This wine comes from stony hillside soil but the vines here were not stressed owing to their deep roots, Fontaine maintains.(ST)" (09/2017) 91 points John Gilman: "The 2015 Grande Montagne from the Fontaines is excellent and really shows a lot of stony minerality on both the nose a ...Read More »

Rich and sweet but fresh, with concentrated flavors of ripe peach and flowers carrying through to a palate-staining finish. These 55-year-old vines are actually planted on humid, heavier clay-based soil at the foot of the hillside, but their deep roots reach the rocks underneath, giving the wine good calcaire energy and tension. It's a lovely Chassagne that will drink well for a decade or more. (WK)" (01/2019) Vinous: "Bright medium yellow. 91-93 points Vinous: "The 2017 Saint-Aubin Derrière Chez Edouard 1er Cru comes from vines planted in 2000. It has a slightly awkward bouquet compared to the Les Frionnes but the palate is fresh and lightly spiced on the entry, good weight in the mouth, maybe needing a little more race to manifest towards the finish but there is that persistent stem ginger note that lingers long after the wine has departed. Racy and full of nervous energy. (NM)" (01/2019)

2017 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Chaumées Clos de la Truffière" (Pre-Arrival)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées Clos de la Truffière was marked by a light touch of reduction, with leesy top notes of nutmeg and bread dough mingling with its bouquet of orchard fruit, confit lemon and toasted nuts. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and expansive, with the broadest shoulders and the most mid-palate amplitude of any premier cru in the range, balanced by juicy acids and concluding with a taut finish that I suspect is slightly shorted by the wine's youthful reduct ...Read More »

However, the 2014 from Michel Coutoux is really special and was absolutely singing at the time of my visit. The bouquet jumps from the glass in a fine blend of apple, tangerine, superb minerality, citrus blossoms, vanillin oak and a topnote of orange zest. Tactile, salty wine with good breadth but only moderate length and grip. Incidentally, these virused, very old (about 70 years) vines, which typically yield very small grapes, produced less than 40 hectoliters per hectare in 2017 after suffering badly from the frost in 2016, and Céline Fontaine told me that they need to be replanted soon.
