Burgundy

Burgundy

Welcome to one of the most historic wine regions in the world, a province of eastern France that is famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of other grapes are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) This is complicated and exciting territory - the hallowed ground where more than a few bonafide wine geeks end up. View our selection...

2016 Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc "Les Sétilles" Top Pick!
2016 Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc "Les Sétilles"

91 points James Suckling: "A tangy and fresh white with sliced lemons and hints of dried tea leaves and flowers. Medium body, bright acidity and a long, flavorful finish. Drink now." (02/2018) K&L Notes: One of the wines poured at the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. This was the old world wine choice for the reception.

2012 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru "153rd Anniversary Cuvee" (Elsewhere $60)

92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A subtle touch of wood sets off ripe and relatively elegant notes of earth, dark cherry and spice. The mid-palate is dense, serious and powerful with plenty of mouth coating sap that helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine on the moderately austere, backward and built-to-age finale. While this is presently backward it should be approachable after 6 to 8 years of bottle age though note that it should live for a very long time. For readers having a child or grandchild in 2012 this would be a good choice to buy in qu ...Read More »

2016 Château de la Charriere Bourgogne Pinot Noir Top Pick!
2016 Château de la Charriere Bourgogne Pinot Noir

This fruit-forward Bourgogne is backed by plenty of tannins from vines with an average age of 35 years, planted at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare. Hand-harvested and completely destemmed, the grapes fermented for more than two weeks and the wine aged for up to a year in mostly neutral French oak barrels.

2017 Domaine Renaud Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes

Domaine Renaud is a small operation, making Mâcon, Pouilly-Fuissé and St. Veran from 12 hectares of estate vineyards. Their cellar is modern, and the winery uses upright ovals for many of the wines, and stainless steel for others. This value is a great alternative to California Chardonnay and an entry into white Burgundy.

2016 Kalinda Bourgogne Blanc Top Pick!
2016 Kalinda Bourgogne Blanc

For decades now, our Kalinda private label has been providing K&L customers with awesome wines at a fraction of what they'd normally pay under the producers' mainstay labels. 2016 was such a short vintage in Burgundy that many producers had to source new fruit just to fill the barrels. The good news is the quality of the 2016 vintage was spectacular, so the fruit they purchased was exceptional in most cases. This is exactly what happened to Jacque Bavard, one of our favorite producers in Burgundy, and the reason we can offer our first Bourgogne Blanc und ...Read More »

2014 Domaine Bruno Colin Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru "Morgeot"

90-92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Firm reduction flattens the underlying fruit. By contrast there is excellent volume to the muscular medium-bodied flavors that possess an attractive sense of tension that adds lift to the opulent but not heavy finish where a hint of bitter lemon peel arises." (06/2016) 91 points Wine Spectator: "This white reveals a racy profile yet remains open-knit, with moderate concentration to the butterscotch, white peach and apple flavors. 2017 Domaine Renaud St-Véran Top Pick!
2017 Domaine Renaud St-Véran

Once in a great while you find wines from the Mâcon so good that tasting them blind you are forced to apply some much higher (and more expensive) appellation to it. Often, such a wine comes from hillside vineyards, with better drainage and cooler nights. This is such a wine, from the slopes below the giant monolith of rock that is Solutré. Domaine Renaud is a small operation, making Mâcon, Pouilly-Fuissé and St-Veran from 12 hectares of estate vineyards. Louis Bouillot Crémant de Bourgogne "Perle d'Aurore" Brut Rosé

90 points Decanter: "The Louis Bouillot ‘Perle’ series is exceptionally well-crafted for its price and all of the wines are recommendable. I’ve picked out the Rosé Perle d’Aurore, though, as rosé is something of a Bouillot speciality (over a million bottles are produced every year) and it’s a wine which isn’t shy about its burgundian identity. “We want,” says Marcel Combes, “vinosity above all, almost a touch of tannin, with what you could almost call a compote style of fruit.” Autumn red fruits are there on the nose, but in a soft and understated sty ...Read More »

2015 Domaine Ponsot Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru (Previously $450)

92-95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Once again there is just enough reduction present to mask the underlying fruit but not the earth and underbrush elements; moreover it is sufficiently light that I doubt that it will persist for very long. Otherwise there is a slightly finer mouth feel to the sleek, intense and muscular mineral-driven flavors that explode on the sappy, rich and balanced finale that displays strikingly good length. However, note well that like the Charmes, this is definitely not constructed for early drinking so be prepared to have ...Read More »

2016 Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc "Oncle Vincent"

James Suckling: " This is aromatically similar to the Sétilles but with even more citrus influence that continues onto the tighter and more complex flavors that terminating in youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. This is a very good Bourgogne though it's one that will need at least a year or two of bottle age first." (06/2018) Wine Spectator: "A compact style, offering lemon, apple and light spice flavors that take on a tactile feel on the finish. Offers just a hint of citrus peel bitterness for lift. Drink now. 2009 Sérafin Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

90 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here the nose is not only slightly riper but it's also notably more complex with sauvage and stone notes on the pungently earthy dark berry fruit aromas. The dense and altogether serious middle weight flavors are shaped by the very firm, indeed almost chewy, tannins on the extract-rich and palate staining finish. This moderately rustic wine is typically one of the best bets in the Serafin portfolio and I highly recommend the 2009 version to you. Green plum and melon dominate this wine that is ready to drink. (RV)" (11/2017) Wine Spectator: "Pear, white peach, stone and earth flavors ply the fleshy texture of this intense white. Tactile and brisk on entry, then thick and energetic in the middle palate, conveying a distinct impression of sweetness countered by pure saline minerality. 2016 Etienne Sauzet Bourgogne Blanc

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An agreeably fresh nose combines primarily pear and apple notes with soft floral and citrus nuances. There is lovely detail to the attractively textured flavors that culminate in a dry, saline and chiseled finish. This is a quality Bourgogne plus it has the stuffing to age too." (06/2018) Decanter: "The Sauzet Bourgogne Blanc, which is mostly from domaine fruit, is tense and acid-driven, with aromas and flavours of honey and white flowers, finishing with chalky grip. Drinking Window 2018-2024. (WK) " (10/2017) K&L Notes: ...Read More »

2016 Domaine Jean-Michel Giboulot Bourgogne Pinot Noir

Jean-Michel is the third Giboulot to head the family estate in Savigny-lès-Beaune, having presided over the 12 hectares in Beaune, Pommard, and Savigny since 1982. Following Jean-Michel's recent conversion to organic farming, the wines have become fresher and rounder, and the increased proportion of destemmed fruit has helped this transition in style. Much as with Giboulot's 2015s, his 2016s are undoubtedly some of the best we've tasted yet from the portfolio, one that we've been working with directly now for a number of years.

2016 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Clos des Porrets St-Georges" (Pre-Arrival)

90-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is sufficiently reduced to overshadow the fruit but it appears to be ripe. Otherwise there is excellent punch and verve to the powerful and muscular flavors that possess excellent mid-palate density while delivering fine length on the balanced finish. This manages to be very Nuits in character without being unduly chewy or rustic. Once again, this is worth considering." (01/2018) 93 points John Gilman: "Clos des Porrets is always the most red fruity of the Gouges family’s premier crus when it is ready to dr ...Read More »

2014 Domaine Bruno Colin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Boudriotte"

91 points Vinous: "Sexy, rather exotic scents of orange zest, yellow peach and spices. In a bigger, riper style than the foregoing 2014 samples, displaying a silky texture and lovely balance. This wine will give early pleasure but also has the spine to age. Spreads out nicely without any impression of heaviness. Much more material here. (ST)" (09/2016)

2016 Chateau de la Charriere Santenay "Les Charmes Dessus" Rouge

The Girardin family has cultivated the vine for 13 generations, and the domaine developed in the sixties thanks to Jean Girardin, notably with the acquisition of Château de la Charrière. Having passed his childhood amongst the vines and in the cellar, Yves developed a passion for all aspects of wine and its culture. In 1981 the family holding of 12 hectares was divided, and Yves found himself at the head of 3 hectares. Wishing to grow and diversify his range of appellations, he bought vines at Chassagne-Montrachet and Pommard and today holds 21.50 hect ...Read More »

2009 Domaine Faiveley Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Aux Vignerondes"

90-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: " Here the fruit runs towards the blue side of the spectrum with aromas of blue berry, plum and violets that is in keeping with the extremely rich and mouth coating medium weight flavors that possess a seductive mouth feel even though the tannins that surface on the balanced, long and serious finish are rather firm." (01/2011) 89-92 points Vinous: "Good full, deep red with ruby highlights. Aromas of blackberry, licorice, violet and minerals; very much a Vosne-side style of Nuits. Sweet and dense but tangy, with b ...Read More »
