2017 Quinta da Aveleda Loureiro-Alvarinho Vinho Verde Top Pick!
2017 Quinta da Aveleda Loureiro-Alvarinho Vinho Verde

91 points Wine & Spirits: "Amazing: Fresh white refreshment for $10. Buy a case and you’ll have a savory, salty Atlantic white to drink all summer long. Right now, it’s delicate, with filigreed lemon-lime flavors offering fruit depth before signing off in a crisp, clean finish. Chill it as an early-evening aperitif, a brunch wine for bacalhão fritters or pike quenelles, or a picnic wine for ventresca tuna salad." (08/2018) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Branco Quinta da Aveleda, the Estate white in the Bordeaux-style bottle, not to be confuse ...Read More »

Caves Messias Santola "Crab Wine" Vinho Verde

Produced from Loureiro and Pederña grapes grown in the granitic soils of the Vinho Verde region, the Santola (or as we here are calling it, "the crab wine") is a delicious, spritely and refreshing white. It doesn't get much more traditional, thirst-quenching or seasonally perfect then this wine. Delicious, low in alcohol, slightly fizzy and way too easy to drink!

Kopke 10-year-old Tawny Port

92 points Wine Spectator: "Subtle, with a perfumy profile of cinnamon, powdered ginger, hazelnut husk and toasted sesame notes leading the way, backed by mouthwatering date and dried fig details and a lengthy finish. Drink now. (JM)" (06/2018) K&L Notes: Sweet, woody, spicy fruitcake and cinnamon reveal themselves on the nose. On the palate, the flavors are wonderfully balanced, no surprise given that the average age of the wine here is actually 15 years and not 10. Since there is no category for 15 year tawnies, Kopke simply chooses to label it as a 1 ...Read More »

1977 Taylor Vintage Port

98 points Vinous: "The 1977 Taylor's Vintage Port is initially tight and conservative on the nose: strawberry, baked cherry, tobacco and wild hedgerow notes emerging but remaining tight-lipped. This needs a good decant! The palate is endowed with depth and concentration, very well balanced with an attractive crispness. Perhaps you could argue that it is a "linear" and more "correct" Taylor's compared to the 1970 and lacks some charm. But there is immense complexity here so it is more a case of a Port demanding a very long maturation in bottle. Tasted in ...Read More »

1997 Dow's Vintage Port

95 points Wine Spectator: "Warm and inviting, with a worn leather feel to the mix of dried anise, espresso, bittersweet cocoa, steeped fig and mulled currant notes, which move seamlessly together through the buckwheat-edged finish. There's plenty here to like now, but this has ample energy for additional development. (JM, Web Only-2017)" 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Mouthfilling and round, without any sharp edges, but this wine remains extremely firm and dense, with several decades of life ahead of it. Dried fig, chocolate and black licorice flavors only ...Read More »

2017 Soalheiro Alvarinho Vinho Verde

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Alvarinho is dry (3.5 grams of sugar and 6.5 grams of total acidity) and comes in at 12.5% alcohol. Colloquially known as the "classico," the flagship unoaked Alvarinho, is typically one of the finest values in Vinho Verde. It ages effortlessly. It's concentrated and structured. Plus, with 100,000 bottles produced, there's enough of it to make it a little easier to acquire than some specialty bottlings. Sourced from 25-year-old vines, this shows off that bit of "Soalheiro Green," as I like to call it, th ...Read More »

2016 Quinta do Crasto "Flor de Crasto" Douro

This is the producer's tank-aged, entry level offering, and a blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional. In April 2014, Mark Squires, writing in Wine Advocate, said of the new label: "When we last left off – in Issue 211 – discussing new Portuguese releases and how enticing many fresh, un-oaked, entry-level reds were at great prices, this was not yet here. Add it to the group, because as time goes on it is performing that function well. (Include Crasto’s regular Tinto, too, which sees only nominal oak.) 1985 Fonseca Vintage Port

96 points Decanter: "A troublesome vintage for many shippers, but Fonseca 1985 never fails to impress: tight-knit, dense and minty with a core of concentration and pure berry fruit. Succulent, wonderfully fresh and vibrant at 30 years old. Peacock’s tail of a finish. A real ‘wow’ of a wine that promises to last a lifetime. (RM)" (11/2015) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1985 Fonseca is still youthful in appearance with hardly any ageing on the rim. The nose offers kirsch, sloes and Christmas cake. Croft "430th anniversary" Port

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV 430th Anniversary Ruby Reserve Port is a blend of various grapes and field blends to reach an average age of 2.5 years old. It comes in with 90 grams of residual sugar. Although a non-vintage wine, this is a one-off, a single bottling for the 430th anniversary. This is chock-full of lifted fruit and flavor. Bright, fresh and pretty delicious, it is an easy drinker that nonetheless has some structure, although that is not the point. 1992 Quinta do Infantado "Estate Bottled" Vintage Port

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There were only 1,000 cases produced of the 1992 Vintage Port, and they are not likely to languish on retailers' shelves. A saturated, black/purple color is followed by a huge, ripe, pure nose of jammy blackberry and cassis fruit that is vaguely reminiscent of such great 1990 Hermitages as Chapoutier's Le Pavillon, Jaboulet's La Chapelle, or Chave's red label Cuvee Cathelin. 2011 Warre's Vintage Port (375ml)

97 points Wine & Spirits: "Half of the lot for this wine comes from the Quinta da Cavadinha, Warre’s property on the western bank of the Pinhão River, a relatively cool site facing east. The balance is from Retiro, in the Rio Torto and Telhada, a property in the Douro Superior the Symingtons purchased in 2006. Old-vine mixed plantings make up 40 percent of the blend, lending it the kind of co-fermented complexity that makes this compellingly drinkable, delicious right now, as it will be for at least the next 20 or 30 years. 2017 Soalheiro "Allo" Vinho Verde

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 ALLO (from the AL of Alvarinho and the LO of Loureiro) marked a departure last year for Soalheiro, generally considered to be an Alvarinho specialist (not that they were wholly uninvolved with Loureiro). It is a 70/30 blend of Alvarinho and Loureiro coming in at a relatively modest 11% alcohol (more like a Loureiro than an Alvarinho). 1977 Fonseca Vintage Port

100 points James Suckling: "Vintage Port doesn't seem like the right wine in the middle of the summer but I had an Amarone producer for dinner the other night in Tuscany and he had never drunk a wine from his birth year. He was lucky enough to have been born in 1977 - a great Port year! I found a bottle of 1977 Fonseca in my cellar - probably my last. It was absolutely gorgeous. Produced from 9 hectares of vines (at the time half of the D.O.'s total plantation) purchased from the local land preservation society, this is a fantastic, dry, creamy, white-fruited Malvasia-based wine from the smallest D.O. in Portugal, located right on the coast, where vines are literally planted in holes dug into the sand down to the point where clay subsoil is reached. This is the producer's first-ever white. Showing good concentration for the level, the fruit is also nicely supported by acidity. It is harmonious and balanced too, with a rather lush feel for an unoaked Bairrada white. This is a great first effort at a reasonable price. Easily the 10 with the most weight in the Fladgate group's lineup this issue, it is a rather powerful 10 year old Tawny with plenty of pop, the biggest and baddest of the trio (Fonseca, Croft and this). There is very fine concentration of flavor for a 10 year old Tawny. If I had a quibble, the alcohol shows at times, especially early on and rather notably when drunk a little too warm. Winemaker's notes: "A blend of Touriga National, Trincadeira and Touriga Franca. The glass opens with a triple layered aroma of savory peppercorn and cocoa, jasmine flowers, and black fruit. The immediate dark chocolate structure provides the canvas on which black cherries, roasted lamb, and exotic spices intermingle. The wine finishes with the tapering dark chocolate structure and culminates with hints of vanilla."

1977 Dow's Vintage Port
