1998 Tamdhu 20 Year Old "Old Malt Cask" K&L Exclusive Single First Fill Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) Top Pick!
1998 Tamdhu 20 Year Old "Old Malt Cask" K&L Exclusive Single First Fill Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

The excellent Tamdhu distillery is one we've worked with previously, but the spirit itself doesn't make it to the open market too often. The distillery, near the village of Knockando, has wide onion-shaped stills. Couple that with classic wooden washbacks and you've got one of the most reliable malts on the market. Part of why we don't see more of this excellent spirit on the open market is that the blenders do value the quality and consistency so highly. Since Tamdhu's purchase by Ian Macleod (owners of the Chiefton's Brand) in 2011, their revamped dist ...Read More »

1998 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien

92 points Wine & Spirits: "(No tasting note given.)" (04/2002) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This opaque purple-colored, muscular, full-bodied, classically made St.-Julien displays impressive concentration, chewy, highly-extracted flavors of black fruits, iron, earth, and spicy wood, and a powerful mouth-feel. A pure, uncompromising, traditionally-styled wine, it is to be admired for its authenticity, class, and quality. (RP)" (04/2001) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium ruby. Very pure aromas of black cherry an ...Read More »

1998 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

96 points Wine Enthusiast: "A big, rich wine with huge amounts of fruit oozing out of the glass. Great concentration and intensity, with licorice flavors from the Mourvèdre, finishing with chewy tannins. A great year for this wine, which should age well for 15 to 20 years." (12/2001) 95 points Wine Spectator: "Very youthful, with a juicy blast of red plum and fig fruit flavors on a racy frame, this also has plenty of spice, tar, plum cake and mineral in reserve, as the finish shows more structure and slowly darkens with time in the glass. Only just sta ...Read More »

1998 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac Top Pick!
1998 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

91 points Vinous: "(78% cabernet sauvignon, 14% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 5.4 g/l total acidity; 13.2% alcohol): Dark ruby-red. Ripe blackcurrant aromas and flavors are lifted by pungent graphite, cedar and mineral notes. Balanced, pure and smooth in the mouth, with excellent perfume and precision. Finishes long and pure, with lingering cassis and leather notes. This is another Lynch-Bages that has picked up volume and flesh from bottle aging. It's a very classic Pauillac and a wine that can still improve with additional cellaring. ( ...Read More »

1998 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan

94 points Wine Spectator: "I love the nose on this wine; multidimensional, with flowers, sweet blackberry and citrus fruit. Full-bodied, with superclassy tannins that are polished and very refined. Goes for minutes on the palate. Still very reserved and not giving all it has. Give it much more bottle time to realize its wonderful style. One of the sleepers of the vintage. (JS, Web-2009)" 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the château, the 1998 Haut-Bailly is a wine that exploits what was a fine vintage in Pessac-Léognan, and appears to ...Read More »

1998 Turley "Rattlesnake Acres" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

89-90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There are 275 cases of the dense, tannic, concentrated, outstanding 1998 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Acres (14.2% alcohol) This effort possesses exquisite purity and fabulously ripe, unmanipulated fruit that cuts a creamy, lush texture on the palate. The Rattlesnake Acres will drink well in 3-4 years and keep for 15 or more. (RP)" (01/2000) Wine Spectator: "A big, muscular, hearty style, rich in ripe stewed plum, white pepper and beefy notes, turning firm and chewy." Full-bodied, with round, soft tannins and lots of spicy, earthy and leafy flavors. Long and rich. Give it a little more bottle age. This has always been excellent. —'88/'98 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2008). Best after 2010. 1998 Billecart-Salmon Blanc de Blancs Champagne

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "From a relatively open vintage, this is a wine that is generous, rounded, full of green fruits, and balanced with a ripe texture. It has weight, but has more to do with sheer pleasure. It could age, maybe over 5 years, but its nutty hints show it is ready to drink. (RV)" (12/2007) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1998 Blanc de Blancs is a gorgeous wine with well-delineated varietal aromas and flavors. From start to finish, this is a wine that exudes refinement and balance. The fruit is sourced from Mesnil, Avize ...Read More »

1998 Val di Suga "Vigna del Lago" Brunello di Montalcino

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good medium red. Expressive, complex nose offers wild strawberry, plum and milk chocolate, along with exotic, slightly rustic oak notes of clove and coconut. Fat, oaky and sweet, with good density buffered by sound acidity. Finishes with big, dusty, building tannins and a note of menthol. (ST)" (09/2003)

1998 Wild Duck Creek Springflat Shiraz

91 points Robert Parker: "A distinctive Shiraz, the black/purple-colored 1998's (600 cases produced) explosive aromatic bouquet is reminiscent of the Maryland-produced Old Bay spice (used with abundance on the local steamed crabs). The spicy note is accompanied by aromas of blackberries, cassis, licorice, and toasty oak. Rich and backward, with fabulous concentration, it will improve significantly with another 2-4 years of bottle age, and should keep for a minimum of 12-15 years." (02/2000)

1998 Turley "Tofanelli" Napa Valley Zinfandel

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The dark ruby/garnet-colored, full-bodied 1998 Zinfandel Tofanelli Vineyard (15.9% alcohol) exhibits spice box and berry fruit aromas and flavors, a sweet, luscious texture, soft, low acidity, and gorgeous voluptuousness. Drink it over the next 5-7 years. " (06/2000) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Moderately saturated red-ruby. Aromas of spicy dark berries, menthol and shoe polish. 1998 Tardieu-Laurent Côte-Rôtie

94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An amazing effort is the 1998 Cote Rotie, which comes from three hillside vineyards - La Landonne, Les Grandes Places, and Cote Rozier. The wine's dark purple color is followed by an explosive, exotic bouquet of bacon fat, cherry liqueur, black olives, roasted meats, and toasty wood. This expressive, voluptuously-textured, full-bodied, powerful, concentrated Cote Rotie reveals some tannin in the finish. 1998 Bourgoin 22 Year Old "Microbarrique" Cognac 375ml New!
1998 Bourgoin 22 Year Old "Microbarrique" Cognac 375ml

The wonderful micro batch artisanal Cognacs from Bourgoin are some of the most exciting of the new breed of Cognac producer. This special expression was finished in 10-Liter "alligator charred" barrels. The microbarrique's deep char imparts wonderful roundness and exotic flavors. Easy drinking but not at all boring, expect rich aromatics of stone fruit and honey. An aromatic character not unlike a fine highland malt, but the palate is where the barrel finish really makes it's presence known. 1998 Screaming Eagle Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon, which was bottled in late June, has turned out even better that I thought last year. It boasts a saturated ruby/purple color in addition to an expressive bouquet of cassis, minerals, and smoke. This multi-textured, round wine exhibits sweet, well-integrated tannin, a great mid-palate and finish, as well as spectacular purity and palate presence. Consume it now and over the next 15-20 years. 1998 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan (5L)

94 points Vinous: "The 1998 Haut Bailly has been a great wine that coincided with the château’s acquisition by the late Bob Wilmers. It has a sublime bouquet with blackberry, boysenberry, crushed stone and hints of violet. After twenty years it is still so youthful. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly firm tannin at the beginning, plenty of tarry black fruit, well judged acidity and a finish that to be honest, is not a million miles away from the 1998 Haut-Brion in style. You can see this continuing to evolve for another two decades without difficu ...Read More »

1998 Bourgoin 22 Year-Old "Brut de Fut" Cognac 375ml (Elsewhere $150)

Bourgoin Cognac is part of a small group of hyper artisanal micro-producers bucking the big business trends in the Charentes. The single estate is located near Tarsac in the Commune of Saint Saturnin. They see themselves as revolutionaries in this complex industry, but not in the sense that they're bringing something new or different. Instead, they espouse a return to simpler, more authentic ways of making cognac. To return, reestablish, renew, restore as in our planet's revolution around the sun. The special expression of this unique place is the result ...Read More »

1998 Raymond-Lafon, Sauternes (375ml)

Robert Parker says: "Raymond-Lafon is a name to watch in the Sauternes district, particularly if one is looking for a wine that is close to the brilliance and majestic richness of Yquem for less than one-third the price. This small estate abuts Yquem's vineyard and has an excellent reputation." The estate of Raymond-Lafon fell into neglect, and it was not until 1972 that Pierre Meslier, the manager of Yquem, purchased this vineyard and began to rebuild this wine's once fabulous reputation. With a tiny yield of 9 hectoliters per hectare (even less than Y ...Read More »

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1998 Harlan Estate Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (OWC - 95RP, 93ST, 90WS) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1998, which is a candidate for the 'Wine of the Vintage,' was produced from yields of 0.9 tons per acre. There are only 1,100 cases, and it is the first Harlan Estate to be composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. A spectacular achievement, it boasts an opaque plum/purple color as well as a sumptuous nose of espresso, mineral, blueberry, blackberry, tobacco, licorice, Asian spice, and roasted meat smells. In the mouth, it is seamless, full-bodied, with an unctuous texture, gorgeously sweet tannin, and layer upon layer of concentration. This is a tour de force in winemaking. It is hard to believe that a wine such as this has emerged from 1998. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2030. (RP)" (12/2000)

Still young and vibrant, the 1998 is an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next decade. The focus, length and persistence are all super-impressive, especially within the context of a challenging vintage.
