1996 Linkwood 21 Year Old "Signatory" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml)

The exceptional Linkwood distillery is another one of the grand old Diageo malts that you wonder why they haven't bothered to make a big deal of. Until you dive deeper into how and why the distillery is so important for making them money on the globally viable blended whisky market. After one taste of this Linkwood it's immediately clear that this is one of the heart malts for the great Johnnie Walker Blends. It kind of reminds me of all the things I love about Johnnie Walker that aren't peaty. Johnnie Walker, in particularly the Johnnie Green, is actual ...Read More »

1996 Ardmore 21 Year Old "Old Malt Cask" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

Usually when we're offered old peated malt, it comes with some expected sticker shock. We've had great opportunities in previously offering some older peated stocks, in particular from Old Particular via the Bowmore Distillery. And while those whiskies are relatively affordable compared to other Islays on the market, they are by no means overtly undervalued. They're fairly priced, but still a stark premium above a regular Highlander. Right now, if we want to buy 12 year old Laphroaig in a private barrel we're paying upwards of £100 a bottle before import ...Read More »

1996 Haut-Bages Libéral, Pauillac

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind at Farr's horizontal. A dense, surly, blackberry/liquorice tinged nose. A lot of new oak yet to be resolved. Dates and raisin. A very high extraction on the toasty palate. Blackberry, kirsch, liquroice. Quite decadent, but good purity and definition. Certainly well-made. Cherry-tinged finish. Good length. Tasted September 2006. (NM)" (09/2006)

1996 La Conseillante, Pomerol

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the château, the 1996 La Conseillante has always been a good performer in what is a Left Bank vintage. Although there is noticeable bricking on the rim, there is plenty of freshness on the nose, quite floral with crushed strawberry, cranberry leaf and a touch of tomato vine, which after ten minutes turns into black truffle (typical trait in Pomerol). There is good vigor here for a 20-year-old Pomerol. The palate is medium-bodied and here you could argue that it is more advanced than the aromatics. Yes, ...Read More »

1996 Guiraud, Sauternes

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "For sure, the 1996 has a more composed bouquet than the 1995 with marmalade, Clementine and touches of brown sugar and chlorine emerging from the almost Barsac-like aromatic profile. The palate has a waxy texture, touches of spice and marmalade that segue into a tense, bitter lemon and bitter orange finish. Comparing the 1996 with recent vintages, it just fall short in terms of the complexity and nuance, but it remains a pleasurable Sauternes, albeit one outshone by the succeeding vintage. Drink now-2020. Tasted April 2013 ...Read More »

1996 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the château, the 1996 Haut Bailly is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. It has an attractive bouquet with blackcurrant pastilles, briary, a touch of gravel and dried orange peel. As I commented a few years ago, this is a 1996 that is not as immediate as others, but seems to find its voice with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a soy-tinged opening. This is well balanced and quite rounded in the mouth, quite masculine and perhaps having dispensed with some of the f ...Read More »

1996 Krug Brut Champagne

100 points Wine & Spirits: "It's hard to imagine how a wine of this power can sustain perfect balance. What is now a more nonchalant intensity in the aroma was, in fact, too much to handle when we tasted this last year, as if the wine had no time for mere humans with their limited sense receptors. If you stop to taste ripe pear, ginger spice, apple blossom and butterscotch the wine leaves you lost in random flavor descriptors as it soars off into a vinous glow that lasts for minutes. This may well be the greatest vintage wine of Henri Krug's career (unle ...Read More »

1996 Screaming Eagle Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

1996 Lafon-Rochet, St-Estèphe

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the sleepers of the 1996 vintage, Lafon-Rochet has turned out an atypically powerful, rich, and concentrated wine bursting with black currant fruit. The opaque purple color gives way to a medium to full-bodied, tannic, backward wine with terrific purity, a sweet, concentrated mid-palate, and a long, blockbuster finish. This wine remains one of the finest values from the luxury-priced 1996 vintage, and is well-worth purchasing by readers who are willing to invest 5-6 years of patience; it should keep for tw ...Read More »

Thick, grapey and concentrated; still quite primary. This shows the fat and depth of the '96 vintage in the northern Medoc. Finishes long, with substantial tannins. Impressive. The nose is fragrant and generous with more red fruit than black, cedar and tobacco, fine definition, perhaps a little rustic in keeping with the winemaking at the time, but certainly giving lots of pleasure. 1996 Dal Forno Romano Amarone della Valpolicella

99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dal Forno's virtually perfect 1996 is undoubtedly the finest Amarone I have ever tasted. Its inky black/purple color is accompanied by extraordinarily pure, graphite-infused, blackberry, plum, mineral, licorice, and espresso flavors. Despite its monumental intensity and richness, this wine is not heavy, somehow managing to conceal its 17.5% alcohol! 1996 Ledaig 19 year old "Sherry Cask Finish" Isle Of Mull Single Malt Whisky (750ml)

Another well aged Sherry finished peated from the Tobermory distillery. These guys have really turned up the quality in the last several years, taking good aged stock and filling them into ultra high-end Sherry barrels to give them that extra little something. For those wanting that peat and Sherry combo there's very little out there in the same range, particularly if you don't want the sappy sweetness added by PX (I'm thinking Lagavulin DE). 1996 Three Rivers (Chris Ringland) Dry Grown Shiraz Barossa Valley (OWC)
Bid on this bottle of 1996 Three Rivers (Chris Ringland) Dry Grown Shiraz Barossa Valley (OWC - 100RP) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A colossal effort and very much in keeping with the style produced by the owner/winemaker Chris Ringland, the 1996 Shiraz (only 100 cases produced) is made from 90-year old vines. Following malolactic fermentation in cask, it spent 40 months in new oak prior to being bottled unfiltered. This is arguably the greatest Shiraz made in Australia, but sadly, there is little of it. This viscous, black/purple-colored wine represents the essence of both wine and Shiraz. With impeccable balance, uncanny as well as unreal levels of concentration, yet perfectly integrated tannin, acidity, alcohol, and wood, it is akin to a dry vintage port. Once past the explosive bouquet of creme de cassis, espresso, melted fudge, and graphite, this massive yet seamless wine offers layers of unctuously-textured flavors crammed with blackberries, smoke, charcoal,

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (98RP, 97JS, 97VN, 96ST, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Lafite-Rothschild was remarkably deep in color considering that it is now 20 years in age. The bouquet is classic Pauillac with pencil shavings and sous-bois infusing the black fruit, masculine and a little aloof, yet focused and very well delineated. The palate is very well balanced with crisp blackberry and boysenberry fruit, spicier than I recollect, a crescendo of flavors so that it seems understated at first but fans out with a sense of confidence towards the finish. I think this still has more to give so cellar it away for another 5-8 years if you can, but otherwise this is an exemplary Lafite-Rothschild that I can envisage getting better and better in bottle, if not quite as enthralling as either Mouton-Rothschild or Château Margaux. 1996 Egly-Ouriet Brut Grand Cru Champagne
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1996 Egly-Ouriet Brut Grand Cru Champagne. Among well-known estates in Champagne, including the producers-formerly-known-as “Grandes Marques,” Egly-Ouriet enjoys special renown. This long-time grower has only been estate bottling Champagne since the 1950s, when Charles Egly bottled 100 cases a year for family and friends. His son Michel expanded this to 1,600 cases, but when Francis Egly took over in 1982, he became a committed récoltant manipulant (grower-producer) and electrified the category with sensational wines that were sinewy yet lithe, and were as delicious as vin clair as they were with bubbles. Part of the reason for this is that Egly’s vinification approach is unusual, but as he says, “In the past, the best vintages of Champagne are those with a high degree of maturity.” You’re right if you inferred that he means most champagnes are made from fruit that isn’t fully ripened (which sounds bad, but in the case of Champagne it isn’t), because most pr

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Domaine Armand Rousseau Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (96JG, 94ST, 93BH, 93RP). John Gilman: "Like the ’96 Clos St. Jacques, the Clos de Bèze from Domaine Rousseau shows enormous potential, but it still demands at least another half decade in the cellar. The deep, complex and potentially stunning nose offers up scents of cassis, black cherries, grilled meat, herb tones, a great base of soil, espresso and a very well-done framing of new oak. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Dominus, a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot, tips the scales at 14.2% alcohol. Although this offering lacks the power, intensity, and compelling characteristics of the 1991 and 1994, it is not far off the pace of those two monumental wines. A super nose of roasted coffee, chocolate, dried herbs, black fruits and kirsch is both intense and persuasive. The wine displays terrific richness, medium to full body, low acidity, a succulent, opulent texture, and superb purity. This beautifully made 1996 is one of the few wines that has successfully tamed the vintage's elevated tannin level. It should be relatively drinkable upon its release, yet evolve nicely for two decades. Impressive! (RP)" (12/1998)

Creamy-sweet in the mouth, with a fat texture and elevated alcohol (14.9%); flavors are rather zinfandel-like. Williams, who told me that the vineyard owner picked these grapes several days later than Williams would have liked, called this slightly high-toned wine "pinot port."
