1988 Margaux, Margaux

95 points Wine Spectator: "This has both sinew and flesh, with taut dried red currant, blackberry and plum skin notes that are forced to expand outward as the core of black tea, charcoal, plum paste and dark humus fills in quickly behind them. The charcoal-tinged grip carries the finish, with more bass than treble at first, but there's perfume here as well. Seriously long and the most overlooked of the truly great vintages here. Drink now through 2025. (JM, Web Only—2014)" 93 points James Suckling: "Mineral and blueberry skin and flowers on the nose. It ...Read More »

1988 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien

93 points Wine Spectator: "Shows plenty of mint, currant and mineral character on the nose. Full-bodied, with big and soft tannins. Plenty of mushroom, berry and fruity character. Opulent and beautiful. (JS, Web-2009)" 92 points Vinous: "The 1988 Léoville Barton has a lovely nose of brambly black fruit, melted tar, tobacco leaf and undergrowth, very traditional in style but after three decades, remaining fresher and more vibrant than many of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied and possesses more fruit and greater density than the Langoa-Barton. I lov ...Read More »

1988 Guiraud, Sauternes

91 points Wine Spectator: "Medium-gold color, with aromas of lemon tart, curd, piecrust and honey. Full-bodied, medium sweet, with bright acidity and a long, exciting finish. Balanced and refined. (JS, Web-2009)" 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted as part of a vertical held at the chateau. The Guiraud 1988 offers the most pleasurable aromatics of the 1980s with a lifted perfumed nose of lanolin, beeswax, brown sugar and quince that all vie for attention. There is a pleasant adhesive scent and fine delineation. The palate is fresh in the mo ...Read More »

1988 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac

93 points James Suckling: "There's licorice here along with mint, some lead pencil and flowers. It's full and round displaying wonderful vanilla and plum flavors. Very silky and refined yet dense and caressing. A beauty, though it does turn a little dry, always revealing its wood." (11/2015) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Very pretty aromas of vanilla, tobacco, berry and chocolate. Medium- to full-bodied, with soft tannins and a berry, chocolate finish. Not very dense. This pales compared with the other top Pauillacs. I never thought this was a perfect win ...Read More »

1988 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

95 points Wine Spectator: "Complex aromas of dark chocolate, currant and cigar box. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a mouthpuckering finish. Still very concentrated and chewy. Finishes with loads of ripe fruits, tobacco and cedar. Big and juicy wine. Give it a couple of years still. (JS, Web Only-2009)" 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Ex-cellar bottle tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical. There are more red fruits on the nose of the ’88 Lynch Bages rather than black: raspberry, cedar, black tea and a touch of earth. Very good definitio ...Read More »

1988 Darroze Domaine de Lagoue Bas Armagnac (750ml)

This small estate outside of Hontanx produces extremely high quality Baco. The nose is ultra rich and decadent. Some dense fruit but bold fresh and dried spices and roasted coffee and toffee flavors. The front is the balance between the mellow and rich, moving toward the roasted dark flavors and a very long spicy finish.

1988 Talbot, St-Julien

Vinous: "The 1988 Talbot is a vintage that I had not tasted for a long time. Now at 30-years old, it has a slightly paler colour compared to the 1988 Gruaud Larose with faint bricking on the rim. The bouquet is very attractive with bright soy-tinged red fruit, sandalwood, clove and a touch of antique bureau. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin, soft in texture with soy-tinged (again) red fruit, finely judged acidity and a classic, traditional cedar-tinged finish that is maybe just a tad too bitter, though this might be offset accompanied by sui ...Read More »

1988 Dartigalongue 30 year old Vintage Bas-Armagnac (750ml)

The oldest house in Bas Armagnac, the Dartigalongue family began to distill in 1813. In 1838, Pascal Dartigalongue founded the first Maison d'Armagnac in Nogaro, the heart of the Bas Armagnac region. In 1870 son Joseph acquired a large vineyard in Salles d'Armagnac near Nogaro. In 1978 great grandson Pierre Dartigalongue created his Museum in Nogaro which houses all the archives of Maison D'Armagnac, including all correspondence since 1838 and a fascinating collection of Vieux Armagnacs in their original bottles, dated 1829, 1848, 1852, 1870, and 190 ...Read More »

1988 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Mosel

98 points Wine Spectator: "(original tasting note not published online)" (09/1989) K&L Notes: From Mosel Fine Wines: "AP: 17 89. This bottle had a perfect fill level and the cork was wet up to its half. The wine is slightly orange in color and the nose is somewhat muted at first with notes of flint, candied fruits and honey. After a few minutes, it opens up to show pure orange peel, mango, tangerine and spices (nutmeg and ginger). The wine is still quite rich on the palate and the notes of botrytis are very pure and clean, which give to this wine a gre ...Read More »

1988 Viña Real Reserva Rioja

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In 1988, Colombia's Cali and Medellín were in the news every other day, George H. W. Bush was elected President of the United States and we all went to see “A Fish Called Wanda," “Rainman” and one of the few internationally-acclaimed films from Spain, “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” (Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios) from director Pedro Almodóvar. In the meantime, 1988 was an Atlantic and tannic vintage (not only in Rioja, I'd say throughout Europe), and that year Rioja had 795 liters of rain ...Read More »

1988 La Lagune, Haut Medoc (Very High Shoulder)

From the "Chateau La Lagune produces a refined, feminine style of wine that offers aromatic complexity and elegant textures. Even though the chateau is located in the Haut Medoc appellation, the wine could easily be confused with a Margaux wine in blind tastings. Most vintages do not require years before the wine matures. 2005 was the first vintage since 1990 that brought attention back to the property for its beautiful style of Bordeaux wine and a contender for the top wine of the Haut Medoc appellation. Chateau La Lagune remains ...Read More »

1988 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien

92 points Wine Spectator: "Shows outstanding structure and definition. New oak comes through in the coffee and plum aromas and the palate is firm and concentrated, with delicious blackberry flavors. (TM)" (10/1992) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A supremely elegant, dense purple-colored effort, the 1998 reveals aromas of cassis, black raspberries, minerals, and currants. Precise, well-delineated, and medium to full-bodied, with magnificent purity and understated elegance, this noble, restrained wine reveals a tannic finish, suggesting 4-5 mo ...Read More »

1988 Domaine de Chevalier, Pessac-Leognan (Very High Shoulder)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Domaine de Chevalier produced one of the finest wines of this vintage in 1988. It is dark ruby, with an unevolved but generous bouquet of smoky new oak, cassis, and flowers. This fleshy, generously-endowed, medium-bodied wine is the finest effort from this property since their 1983. " (01/1998) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot and 5% cabernet franc; 12.5% alcohol): Amber-tinged red. Strong notes of torrefaction dominate the delicate red cherry, herb and ...Read More »

1988 Figeac, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 1988 Figeac, St-Emilion (93JG). John Gilman: "The 1988 Château Figeac is a wine of outstanding potential, but it is still several years away from its apogee. The nose is young, deep and still marked by a bit of youthful “horsiness” that may or may not fully disappear with further bottle age. However, under this bit of barnyard is a stunning mélange of black cherries, menthol, cigar ash, a nice touch of St. Émilion nuttiness, a complex base of soil tones and a refined framing of cedar. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, suave and classically structured, with a sappy core of black cherry fruit, a fine signature of soil, and still a fair bit of ripe tannin perking up the finish. The focus and balance here are exemplary, and the complexity is already most impressive for its still fairly youthful state. I would keep this wine tucked away in the cellar still for seven or eight more years to let it fully blossom, and then drink this excellent vintage of Figeac over t

1988 Rieussec, Sauternes
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1988 Rieussec, Sauternes (95RP, 90ST, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted in Sauternes with Charles Chevalier, the 1988 Rieussec is a vintage that Chevalier himself claimed to be his favorite. I can understand why. It has an unerringly youthful bouquet with vibrant citrus fruit, wild honey, mandarin and mineral scents, a bouquet that seems to have electricity flowing through it. The same can be said for the palate that is full of tension and vigor, almost clinical in terms of focus with alluring viscosity and wonderful length. This bowled me over with its charm and breeding. Hunt a bottle down and share with your best friends—this is a superlative Rieussec, one of the best produced. (NM)" (01/2017)
