1986 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien

95 points Wine Spectator: "A monster in its infancy. Almost black in color, with intense cassis, herb and mint aromas and superrich, dense cassis and licorice flavors. May last forever. (TM)" (10/1992) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1986 Ducru Beaucaillou was served by Bruno Borie both decanted and directly from bottle, poured blind. From the bottle, it has an attractive bouquet with plush blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, indeed, showing more fruité than I was expecting. There is a roundness to these aromatics, perhaps a little more ...Read More »

1986 Raymond-Lafon, Sauternes

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It is hard to believe this wine will eclipse the great 1983, but the differences in the two wines are negligible. I do not believe the 1986 makes quite the impact on the palate that the huge, massive 1983 does, but there is a great deal of botrytis, and a profound, penetrating fragrance of sauteed pineapple, vanillin, toast, and honeyed peaches. In the mouth, the wine is more streamlined than the 1983, but lusciously rich and full bodied, with very good acidity and a creamy, intense finish. It will be interesting ...Read More »

1986 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac (1.5L)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine is the finest Grand-Puy-Lacoste produced after 1982 and before 1995. The 1986 still possesses an impressive deep ruby/purple color, as well as a classic nose of cedar, blackcurrants, smoke, and vanillin. Full-bodied, powerful, authoritatively rich, and loaded with fruit, this wine's solid lashing of tannin is not likely to melt away for 3-4 more years. It can be drunk, although it is backward and unyielding. Certainly, it is one of the better northern Medocs of the vintage. (RP)" (01/1998) Wine Specta ...Read More »

1986 Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Blanco Gran Reserva Especial Rioja

100 points James Suckling: "This is a triumph. An amazing white showing roasted pineapple, dried apple, flowers and hints of lemon curd on the nose. Hints of almonds, too. Full-body, closed and tight with amazing depth and beauty. Waxy, salty, and creamy. Goes on for minutes. 21 years in wood, seven in concrete and then about three years in bottle. First year since 1978. Viura with a hint of malvasia. I have the same mind-tingling sensation tasting this as tasting the 1964 Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva Blanco. Another perfect wine. 8,000 bottles made. " (10 ...Read More »

1986 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Still backward (frustratingly so), this wine shows a very dark ruby color with a hint of pink at the rim. The aromatics are beginning to emerge from just pure fruit-driven notes to secondary characteristics. Sweet earth, truffle, black currant, underbrush, and licorice emerge with coaxing. In the mouth, the wine is powerful, dense, with high tannin., impressive concentration, and a formidable, sort of old-style personality. The best 1986 Medocs are terrific wines, but have never been wines that show a lot of char ...Read More »

1986 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe

95 points Decanter: "Vibrant deep colour, this has masses of spice box and minerals on the nose. Of course, the 86 was famous for its power and tannic structure and this is still muscular and foursquare, but the tannins are beginning to yield and soften. Very fresh acidity and classic sweet cassis fruit with notes of minerals, underbrush and tobacco. Very pure and long. Impressively, the wine had been decanted two hours previously and was still evolving in the glass more than an hour later. Tasted at Decanter Fine Wine Encounter 2015. (JS)" 93 points Wi ...Read More »

1986 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (bin soiled label, very high shoulder) Back In Stock!
1986 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (bin soiled label, very high shoulder)

95 points Decanter: "Marvellous old Bordeaux with delicate cassis, graphite, and faded violet nuances. A legendary wine for this estate, equal to the 1982 but ageing better. (ID)" 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Now at 30 years of age, there is a gulf between the two Pichons in this vintage that no longer exists. The 1986 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has long been one of the best wines from the estate alongside the 1982 (even if the first bottle was a little oxidized). The second bottle was representative. It has a classic pencil-lea ...Read More »

1986 Rayne Vigneau, Sauternes

91 points Wine Spectator: "Wonderfully explosive, bursting with lime, honey, and dried apricot notes; it burns your palate with flavors that go on and on. Medium-to-full-bodied, very sweet, yet fresh and balanced. Tempting now. " (04/1995) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is the first reassuring example of Rayne-Vigneau in years, exhibiting a deft touch of new oak, an elegant, yet concentrated, flavorful style, and a great deal of finesse. The overwhelming impression is one of pears, pineapples, and great balance and character." (01/1998) ...Read More »

1986 Suduiraut, Sauternes

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Plump, rich, honeyed, pineapple, coconut, and buttery fruit flavors abound in this full-bodied, rich wine that falls just short of being profound. It is muscular and rich, but it is missing an element of complexity that I found in many other 1986s." (01/1998) Wine Spectator: "Ripe and golden, with buttered pear and pineapple aromas and long, honeyed fruit flavors." (12/1989)

1986 Chateau de Ravignan Bas-Armagnac (750ml)

From the importer: "Castles have graced the property of what is now the Château de Ravignan since the 12th century. The name "Ravignan" itself comes from the deep ravines surrounding the property that once served as a natural defense. The château was later occupied by feudal barons and partially destroyed during the religious wars of the 16th century. In the mid-17th century, a Louis XIII manor was built on the property. ? Vineyards were planted in 1732. Around the same time, the property was sold to Jean La Croix, who later took the name Ravignan.?"

1986 Domaine Boingnères Folle Blanche Bas-Armagnac (750ml)

When discussing the components of a great brandy, the soil is just as important an indicator of quality as it is to a great wine. Boingnères grows all their fruit in a majority of sand and limestore--the absolute best makeup for producing fantastic grapes. Run by Martòn Lafite, of the esteemed Château Lafite family, the Domaine also owns their own still (rather than hiring someone to bring them a still like many producers do) so they have been familiar with the workings of their distillation for decades. The single vintage Folle Blanche expression uses o ...Read More »

1986 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan

93 points John Gilman: "The 1986 Haut-Bailly is a really terrific example of the vintage and is starting to really drink beautifully at age twenty-four. The deep, complex and very pure nose offers up a mix of cherries, orange zest, tobacco leaf, lovely minerality, summer truffles and cedary wood. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish and strikingly transparent, with a lovely core of fruit, superb intensity of flavor, modest tannins and outstanding length and grip on the beautifully balanced finish. Just a lovely and very refined example of the ’86 vint ...Read More »

1986 Domaine de Chevalier, Pessac-Leognan (some soiled labels)

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright red with an amber rim. Notes of spicecake, forest floor and faded flowers complicate red cherry and minerals on the refined, complex nose. Sweet and suave on entry, then spicy and more austere in the middle, with harmonious acidity nicely framing the decadent red cherry, clove and spicy tobacco flavors. Finishes long and pure, with very good definition and sneaky concentration and length. This is drinking splendidly now and is not likely to gain much by further cellaring, but it certainly isn' ...Read More »

1986 Joseph Phelps "Insignia" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend
Bid on this bottle of 1986 Joseph Phelps "Insignia" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (94RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This surprisingly rich, dark garnet-colored Insignia displays notes of cedarwood, tobacco leaf, black currants, graphite and damp earth. Medium to full-bodied with remarkable density, richness and vigor for its age, one would think that with this much Merlot in the blend it would be near the end of its life, but that's not the case. It appears to have reached its plateau of full maturity, but it should drink well for another decade or more. Another strong performance by an Insignia from the mid-eighties, this 4,000-case blend follows nearly the same formula as the 1984 and 1985 (23% from estate fruit and the rest from growers). The final blend was 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. (RP)" (11/2013)

1986 Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1986 Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac (98RP, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the château, the 1986 Lafite-Rothschild continues to offer an exquisite bouquet at 30 years of age. This is beautifully defined, still full of energy, with copious blackberry, clove, leather and graphite aromas that seem to gain momentum in the glass. The palate is extremely well balanced with a crystalline quality, filigree tannin, perfectly pitched acidity, a quintessential Lafite-Rothschild with a sense of energy and focus undiminished by time. This finish displays immense purity and refinement, one of the most mineral-driven Lafites that I have encountered, whilst the aftertaste seems to linger for over one minute. It must rank as one of the finest wines from the estate. (NM)" (12/2016)

1986 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1986 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe. Wine Spectator: "Very firm and elegant, with a bit of a hard edge to remind you it's a St. Estephe, but the grapy, cassis aromas and flavors are classic. It's very well put together; all it needs is the complexity and pizzazz that comes with cellaring." (05/1989)

1986 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1986 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (96JS, 93RP). James Suckling: "I tasted this at a fun restaurant in Bordeaux called Le Père Ouvrard in the Bouscaut neighborhood. The 1986 was a great vintage for the Médoc but less so for Pessac-Léognan, partly because an early torrent of rains wrought havoc for wines with more merlot in their blends. Many of the 1986s are starting to fall apart, but the La Mission was holding on nicely with dark berries, currants, iodine and oyster shell. It was full-bodied, very soft, very silky and ended with a fresh finish. It’s a wine definitely on a holding pattern." (06/2016)
