1978 La Conseillante, Pomerol Back In Stock!
1978 La Conseillante, Pomerol

John Gilman: "The fine, Indian Summer conditions of 1978 were less helpful on the Right Bank than they were on the Left Bank, and so many of the ‘78s I have tasted from Pomerol and St. Émilion are a touch herbal from more indifferent ripening. This is the case with the ’78 La Conseillante, which is still a complex and nicely soil-driven wine. The bouquet is a blend of cassis, a bit of tariness, fresh herb tones, gravel, charred earth and cigar smoke. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish and still nicely suave on the attack, with a good core, fine focu ...Read More »

1978 Cheval Blanc, St-Émilion
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Cheval Blanc, St-Émilion (93ST). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright red. The captivating nose of red berries, minerals and grilled nuts is complicated by a delicate leafiness and a spicy tobacco note. Then sweet, bright and focused in the mouth, with flavors of red berries, tobacco, cedar and underbrush. Finishes very long and spicy, with a slight tannic kick at the back, but still manages to come across as refined and suave. This Cheval Blanc has always exhibited (especially in its youth), a firmer, more austere personality than most vintage. The 1978 growing season was characterized by slightly lower-than-average temperatures in the summer and fall. It was dry right through the very late harvest, which took place between October 9 and 18. There was a late start to the growth cycle and lots of mildew in the spring. This was one of the best bottles of 1978 Cheval Blanc I have ever tried. (ID)" (10/2011)

1978 Jaboulet "La Chapelle" Hermitage
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Jaboulet "La Chapelle" Hermitage (100JS, 100RP, 99WS, 96VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As heavenly and profound as it gets, the still youthful-colored 1978 Hermitage la Chapelle exhibits an insane bouquet of sweet cassis, truffle, smoked meats and licorice. Full-bodied, multidimensional, decadent and massive on the palate, with a stacked mid-palate and still present, sweet tannin, it tastes like a mix of the more fruit-loaded '90 and the more evolved, smoky and soy-laced '61. You could easily run out of adjectives describing this beauty, but it's a perfect wine any way you look at it. I see no reason to hold off, and it's drinking perfectly for my palate today, but it certainly won't fall off a cliff anytime soon. (JD)" (09/2015)

1978 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru "Champans"
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1978 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru "Champans". Neal Martin writes writes: "I was interested to learn that when Hubert de Montille inherited his father’s vines in 1947, it consisted of just three hectares. Over the years he built up both his family’s holdings and his reputation from his base in Volnay, not far from Michel Lafarge, while running a successful law firm in Dijon. During the 1990s he gradually handed over the running to his son Etienne, who was working in the financial sector and his daughter Alix, married to Jean-Marc Roulot. It was during Etienne’s tenure at Credit Foncier that he was charged with running Chateau de Puligny-Montrachet. That was probably when I first met him, somewhere around 1998, the first time accompanied by his father. Etienne is not a man to take things easy. He established a negociant business in 2003 (Les Deux Montille) that is based in the old Bouchard Pere cellars on the outskirts of Meursault, converted the vineyar
