1970 Bodegas Bilbainas "Viña Zaco" Gran Reserva Rioja (base neck fills) (Previously $150)

Founded in 1859 by a group of Bordelais to export to the wine-starved French market after phylloxera had ravaged its vineyards. Its original name was Savignon Frères & Cie, but was changed to Bilbaínas after being purchased by a group of Bilbao businessmen. The Spanish royal family, Winston Churchill, and Salvador Dalí were among the wine's ardent admirers. The wines represent classic Rioja in both history and character. They are based in Haro, as are other iconic bodegas such as Muga, La Rioja Alta, Cune, Lopez de Heredia.

1970 Gazin, Pomerol

Robert Parker writes: "Readers may have forgotten (or never knew) that a chunk of this vineyard was sold to Petrus in the early 1970s, but what remains is still a superb terroir and incredibly well-placed on the plateau of Pomerol, adjacent to Petrus and across the road from Lafleur."

1970 Graham's Vintage Port

94 points John Gilman: "I drank quite a bit of the 1970 Graham’s over the course of the 1990s, but had not crossed paths with a bottle in several years until this most recent example. The wine is superb in 1970, as it displays a bouquet of voluptuous complexity, offering up scents of black cherry, plum, cedar, fresh mint, chocolate, a bit of tobacco leaf, and lovely, estery floral topnotes. On the palate the wine is focused and opulent, with fine framing acidity adding a note of precision to the attack, and with excellent freshness and balance on the sof ...Read More »

1970 Giscours, Margaux (high shoulder fill) Back In Stock!
1970 Giscours, Margaux (high shoulder fill)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1970 Giscours continues to offer a large-scaled, spicy, licorice, earth, cedar, curranty, and leathery nose backed-up by muscular, full-bodied, tannic flavors. This fully mature, fleshy, distinctive wine ...has good size, fine ripeness, and an overall sense of balance." (06/1996) Wine Spectator: "Deep ruby-garnet; tarry nose, with cassis and black truffle accents; firm, fruity and round..." (05/1993)

1970 Taylor Vintage Port (cracked capsules)

Now fully mature and sublime, the 1970 Taylor is a lovely port to drink now. 98 points Wine Spectator: "Clearly lives up to Taylor's superb reputation. Deep ruby, with intense violet and chocolate aromas, full-bodied, with gorgeous fruit flavors, full but well-integrated tannins and an extremely long finish. Amazing balance and finesse." (1989) 96 points Robert Parker: "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time ...Read More »

1970 Phélan Ségur, St-Estephe (Very High Shoulder Fill) Back In Stock!
1970 Phélan Ségur, St-Estephe (Very High Shoulder Fill)

One of a few notable Bordeaux chateaux established by an Irish immigrant, Chateau Phelan-Segur was formed in the early 1800s by wine merchant Bernard O’Phelan of Tipperary. The estate grew to be one of the largest in St-Estèphe before being sold in 1883 to the Delon family that held it until 1984. The estate's proximity to the estuary of the Gironde and soils of alluvial gravel over sandy clay have produced several vintages of exceptional wines.

1970 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien (1.5L)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine has been fully mature and delicious for many years, so I was not surprised by how stunning this bottle was. It has always been an outstanding wine for the vintage - complex, rich, savory, and the quintessentially elegant Bordeaux. This beauty continues to reveal the fragrance and finesse that one expects from Lafite-Rothschild but so rarely finds. A fragrant, complex bouquet of cedar, herbs, vanillin, fruitcake, and coffee is followed by a soft, gentle, graciously-constructed wine with sweet layers of f ...Read More »

1970 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac (high mid fill)

96 points Wine Spectator: "Deep garnet; fragrant tar and black truffle nose; extremely concentrated; big and mouth-filling, with very dense cassis flavor; enormous, generous fruit; a voluptuous claret." (05/1993) 94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright red with an amber rim. Captivating nose of dark plum, blackcurrant, oak, coffee, cocoa and flowers. Juicy, sweet and suave on entry, then brightly focused in its red fruit and black flavors complicated by cedar and citrus. Finishes with flinty, saline nuances and very suave tannins. ...Read More »

1970 Rieussec, Sauternes (very high to high shoulder fill, some soiled/torn labels)

*** From Michael Broadbent: "Surprisingly pale, sweet, spearmint nose, medium sweetness and body, nice rich flavour, good acidity." Neil Martin: "A medium-bodied palate, good acidity, a little ephemeral and very floral. Quite sharp but good delineation. A pretty Sauternes with an attractive pineapple finish."

1970 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac High Mid fill

Jancis Robinson: "Magnum. This was a strange wine as at the beginning it was rather tart and disappointing. And after 45 minutes or so it was starting to return to that state, but about 20-30 minutes after pouring it was absolutely glorious in typically Lafite lighter, but soaring, register. Mid ruby. A bit rusty. Light and a bit raw. Very light in fact. Lots of acidity. But then it came out and, I suspect, would have been even more impressive had it not been served alongside the powerhouse of Latour 1970. 17.5/20 points. 1970 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien Top Pick!
1970 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien

94 points John Gilman: "I have been a big fan of the 1970 Ducru-Beaucaillou, but in the past I have always found it just a half step behind the superb 1966. However, the most recent tasting seemed to indicate that the wine is showing more structural integrity and greater depth than it did for the last decade and a half, and it may well be that the wine has simply remained a bit young and I have been underestimating it in the past. This most recent bottle offers up a stunning and still youthful nose of cassis, black cherries, a touch of red currant, cigar ...Read More »

1970 Suduiraut, Sauternes (375ml)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A deep amber colour and a Beerensauslese-lite nose that is well defined, although lacking some botrytis. There are scents of Satsuma, beeswax and just a little chlorine. The palate is commendable, well balanced, a little ginger on the entry leading to a balanced palate with orange rind, Seville orange marmalade, almost Barsac-like on the finish. (Previously - Suduiraut can make powerful, rich wines that are often rustic and excessively alcoholic and hot when young. I am told they become more civilized with age, and certain ...Read More »

1970 Cheval Blanc, St-Emilion

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at Cheval Blanc dinner at The Ledbury. This has always been a great 1970 Saint Emilion. It has a noticeable deep hue. The nose is unashamedly rustic with mulberry, crushed flowers, wild heather and a touch of chlorophyll. Great definition and vibrancy: a wine wallowing in its secondary aromas. The palate has fine definition and demonstrated much more backbone than the Cheval ’78 tasted alongside. Here, the Merlot is undaunted by the Cabernet Franc and lends it a beguiling fleshiness, especially towards the ...Read More »

1970 Cockburn Vintage Port

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Ruby color, with just a hint of brick at the rim. Mouthfilling red berries and plums, finishing with chocolate and peppery spice. Overall, it’s a bit austere, but pretty, and capable of another decade or two of further aging. Drink or hold. (JC)" (03/2004) Jancis Robinson: "Very dark ruby. (Darker than 1977.) A burnt, rather simple quality to this nose. Not much subtlety. Thick on the palate with very marked sweetness. Hot finish. Thick, sweet and almost New World! 175./20 points. (JR)" (09/2012)

1970 Fonseca Vintage Port

96 points Wine Spectator: "Some people may enjoy this wine's rather fat, rich and powerful fruit now, but I still find it too young for drinking. Deeply colored, with smoky mint, tar and fruit aromas, full-bodied, with concentrated fruit flavors and plenty of tannins. (JS, 1989)" 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Vintners Company’s 650th anniversary celebration at Vintners Hall, the Fonseca 1970 was the finest bottle I have encountered. The bouquet opens beautifully with heady scents of clove, ginger, small red cherries, bergamot a ...Read More »

1970 Bodegas Bilbainas "Viña Pomal" Reserva Rioja (3cm fill)

Undoubtedly an underrated, traditional Rioja, Viña Pomal is a bottling which has been made for 100 years. It comes from a single vineyard in Haro (in fact, the vineyard borders Lopez de Heredia's Viña Tondonia). Composed of 100% Tempranillo, this classically styled Rioja is aged for 18 months in American oak followed by additional time in bottle.

1970 Montrose, St-Estèphe
Bid on this bottle of 1970 Montrose, St-Estèphe (95JG). John Gilman: "The ’70 vintage of Montrose has always been one of my favorites for this property, and this particular bottle showed outstandingly well. The bouquet is very, very deep and delivers a wonderfully complex mélange of cassis, black raspberry, cigar box, woodsmoke, a stellar expression of Montrose earthy soil, herbs and a judicious framing of cedary, spicy wood. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, young and urgent, with great acids, a rock solid core of black fruit, excellent expression of terroir, and profound length and grip on the mineral-infused finish. The ’70 Montrose is still a tad on the young side, and will continue to improve over the next twenty years, and should have no difficulty lasting another fifty! To give some idea of just how good the ’70 Montrose is, we paired it up with the ’70 Latour! I have a very, very hard time imagining that the highly-touted 1989 and 1990 will ever be as good as the 1970 Mont
