1964 Bodegas Bilbainas "Clarete Fino" Gran Reserva Rioja (base neck fills) (Previously $200)

Bilbainas was founded in 1859 by a group of Bordelais who exported back to wine-starved France where phylloxera had ravaged its vineyards. Its original name was Savignon Frères & Cie, but was changed to Bilbaínas after being purchased by a group of Bilbao businessmen. The Spanish royal family, Winston Churchill, and Salvador Dalí were among the wine's ardent admirers. The wine represents classic Rioja in both history and character.

1964 Berberana Reserva Rioja (top shoulder, some stained labels) (Previously $200)

Berberana was known back in the day for the quality of their wines - we're talking pre 1970's vineyard expansion and grubbing of older vines for more productive clones. 1964 is a magical vintage in Rioja, undoubtedly the best post second world war vintage for the region. Others such as 2001 may prove to be its equal, but for now, '64 reigns supreme.

1964 Ausone, St. Emilion
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1964 Ausone, St. Emilion (95VN, 92JG). Vinous: "The 1964 Ausone is a wine that I first encountered in 2003 when it impressed...and then some. Now 15 years later I have no reason to alter that view because the 1964 is still going strong. It has a deep core with a mature rim. The nose is fresh and vibrant with a mixture of red and black fruit, rosewater, sandalwood and a hint of those same black olive that I remarked on before. The palate is medium-bodied, vivacious and beautifully balanced. It is not a flamboyant or ostentatious Ausone and perhaps compared to the Cheval Blanc it is more correct and linear. But it loosens its tie with aeration and seems to manifest more weight and corpulence, introducing a precise saline finish that just urges you back for another sip. What an outstanding 1964. Tasted at the Ausone vertical in London. (NM)" (03/2018)
