Precedent was founded by Nathan Kandler who fell into a career in winemaking after a summer stint as a bartender provided the proverbial "bite" from the wine bug. The Kirschenmann Vineyard is recognized as one of Lodi’s great old-vine Zinfandel vineyards. Planted in 1915 on its own roots, this organically farmed vineyard has fast become one of Lodi’s most prized sites under the stewardship of famed winemaker Tegan Passalaqua. The sandy silica soils and the river’s cooling influence make this vineyard one of a kind. Nathan’s winemaking hand has everythin...

(01/2020) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Produced from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley was sourced from sites Emerson Brown has worked with for a number of years, coming primarily from bench and valley floo...

2018 Sea Smoke "Ten" Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir
Top Pick!
For years, vintners have coveted a stretch of land in the western end of Santa Barbara's Santa Rita Hills AVA known to have the perfect microclimate, soils, and exposure to grow world-class Pinot Noir. In 1999, fulfilling a long-held dream of owner Bob Davids, this sought-after stretch of land became Sea Smoke Vineyard. Sea Smoke produces Pinot Noir grown exclusively on the south-facing hillsides of the estate vineyards. On summer evenings, the Santa Ynez River canyon funnels a cool maritime fog layer (sea "smoke") across the hillsides, slowing the ripen...

Medium to full-bodied, the palate is classically styled with restrained red and black fruits and loads of spices. It has a firm, fine-grained frame and seamless freshness on the long, nuanced finish." 91 points Vinous: "Deep ruby-red. Black currant, cherry, pipe tobacco and woodsmoke on the highly fragra...

2017 Turtle Rock "Westberg Red" Paso Robles Zinfandel-Tempranillo
Back In Stock!
96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The Zinfandel-dominated 2017 Westberg Red (which includes 24% Tempranillo) is another saturated purple-colored effort from winemaker Don Burns that offers an earthy, meaty bouquet of black fruits, plums, Asian spices, flowers incense, and blood orange. It's ripe, sexy, rounded, and just a beautiful drink. I’d be thrilled to have bottles in the cellar." (10/2019) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend of 76% Zinfandel and 24% Tempranillo aged 22 months in 60% new oak, the medium ruby-purple colored 2017 Westberg Red is...

2005 Laphroaig 13 Year Old "Chieftain's" K&L Exclusive Single Sherry Butt Cask Strength Unchillfiltered Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
The magical distillery on the south shore of Islay, like all south shore distillers, is quite unlike any other. But Laphroaig has a certain place in the hearts of the hardest core peat lovers. They're the last distiller down there to malt a portion of their barley on site. Their complex system of tiny stills create the most peculiar and enticing peated spirit in the world. The quality and consistency of their casks is second to none. But over the last decade, what was once a staple in the independent bottling repertoire has completely disappeared. Laphro...

95 points Vinous: "The 2016 Barolo Bussia might very well be the most impressive young Barolo I have ever tasted from Barale. The aromatics alone are magical. Sweet rose petal, orange peel, cinnamon, red cherry and chalk are some of the many aromas and flavors that soar out of the glass. A wine of translucent beauty, the 2016 captures all the allure that makes Barolo one of the world’s most coveted wines. Don’t’ miss it. The autosuggestion is too strong to ignore, and the bouquet of this mourvedre/grenache/shiraz blend has a ripe fig overtone. The palate keeps its focus where it should, with a suite of sultry earthy notes ex the mourvedre, lightened and brightened by the other varieties." Fresh acidity lends tension and keeps it balanced. (KO)" (10/2019) 96 points Vinous: "Sandrone's 2015 Barolo Aleste is a total stunner. Based on Chardonnay, Marsanne, Petite Manseng, and Sauvignon Gris, its lighter gold hue is followed by a fresh yet also textured white that offers up lots of pineapple and white currant fruits as well as notes of toasted bread, crushed rock, spice, and a touch of flowers. Ariston Aspasie "Brut Prestige" Champagne
Top Pick!
Paul Vincent Ariston says that his 25-year-old vines reflect the vintage, but the Prestige, made from vines averaging 60 years, reflect his terroir. It is composed of 50% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir and 25% Meunier. This was one of the best bottles from my 2010 trip, and we drank two just to make sure! It has fantastic Brouillet black cherry power, and finishes very dry and super long. It is a powerhouse in the style of a vintage Bollinger, but with even more soul! 2015 Val di Suga Brunello di Montalcino
Top Pick!
92 points Decanter: "As of the 2015, all of Val di Suga's wines spend less time in wood to curb Sangiovese's tendency to oxidise. This wine brings together grapes from all three of Val di Suga's distinct vineyard sites in equal proportions. Fragrant orange and raspberry notes progress into darker, earthier nuances. There is a saline edge and a gentle grip holding together lush fruit. It's a touch short but still bright and tangy on the finish. Based on Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Carignan from the La Clape AOC, the Grenache and Mourvedre were aged in tank and the Syrah in 300-liter barrels. Beautiful cassis and black raspberry fruits as well as complex blood orange, spice, violet, and licorice notes all flow to a medium to full-bodied, incredibly pure red that has silky tannins, beautiful balance, and a great, great finish. This super rare bottling is made with some of the nearly extinct, native grape varieties of Champagne. It is composed of 40% Petit Meslier, 40% Arbanne, and 20% Pinot Blanc. I think it is the best of the excellent Ariston portfolio. The nose has only hints of exoticism; the overall impression is of rich cream and toast, but underneath is a hint of pine and exotic white fruit from the old varieties. On the palate the Champagne makes for a double take: it is very rich and textural, but finishes with a laser beam of chalky acidity that just goes on and on. ...

This Gran Reserva is from some of their oldest Tempranillo and Graciano vines, planted in 1931 and 1946. It is elegant, generous and a precociously delicious treat for now, or over the next 15 years. Miguel Merino makes, as he likes to put it, an "updated classic" style of Rioja, all from his own 2 hectares of vines and several hectares of vineyards owned by a close friend. All the fruit is from sloped vineyards (Miguel is a fan of his slopes) within the cooler climate Rioja Alta town of Briones, which makes his wine a terrific showcase of the terroir (e...

Very fruity, this rosé is particularly well suited as an aperitif or with salads and vegetable dishes."

94 points James Suckling: "A strong vintage for warmer-climate shiraz and this wine is certainly reaping the benefits. The nose has such eclectic fruit aromas that run a full spectrum, from the lighter spiced red-fruit aromas to red plums, through blue fruit to darker blackberries and plums. The palate has impressively layered flavors that run the same broad spectrum as seen on the nose and the tannins are so well groomed and run very, very long. Holds fruit flavor deep. Will age very well for 15-plus years. Drink or hold. Screw cap." (07/2020) 93 poin...

This powerful Pinot Noir Champagne comes from a less than 1/2 acre parcel in the grand cru of Bouzy planted in 1970 called Les Maillerettes. These old Pinot vines are the source for the massal selections used by the Paillard family for the rest of their plantations. This bottling, which will cellar for a very long time, also shows quite well right now. While I would not recommend this as a party bottle, graduates of Champagne will find one of the best expressions of real Pinot in this majestic wine. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)
