Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 1989 La Rioja Alta "Viña Ardanza" Reserva Rioja (93VN). Vinous: "Medium red. Maturing Burgundy aromas of plum, dried cherry, loam and milk chocolate, plus a whiff of coconut. Big, rich and sweet, with huge palate presence; flavors of plum, bitter chocolate and coconut are given clarity by ripe, integrated acidity. Lovely sweet finishing flavors stain the palate. Bid on this bottle of 1989 Montrose, St-Estèphe (100RP, 99JS, 98VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "For many years I have vehemently argued that the 1989 Montrose is a benchmark wine for the estate. Having tasted it several times over the last couple of months, I have never found a single occasion to alter that view. Tasted at the vertical in London, it continues to shine, having never lost any of its luster in recent years. It is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc that was picked from 11 to 28 September. Lucid in color, the aromatics do not hold back with vibrant blackberry, blueberry and black truffle, hints of sous-bois, all with sensational precision that few can match in this vintage (indeed, its precision lends it a veneer of modernity since "precision" is now more commonplace across Bordeaux). Bid on this bottle of 1989 d'Yquem, Sauternes (98VN, 97DC, 97RP). Vinous: "The 1989 Yquem is probably the best and most consistent of the triumvirate at the end of the decade. Two bottles tasted at 30 years of age give me no reason to alter that opinion. Limpid gold in color, slightly lighter than the 1988, it has a vivacious bouquet of gorgeous orange blossom, tinned apricot, quince jelly and wild heather, all delivered with impressive clarity. The palate is cohesive, pure and exquisitely balanced, sporting just the right amount of viscosity (less than the 1990). It bursts with tangerine, white peach, saffron and fresh fig, flecks of Seville orange marmalade appearing on the finish. This is Yquem flirting with its very best, and you never know – it could get even better with age. (NM)" (09/2019)

Bid on this bottle of 1989 La Conseillante, Pomerol (97VN, 96RP, 94JG, 94WS). Vinous: "The 1989 La Conseillante is one of the top performers in Pomerol and arguably now one of the best values. This bottle confirms that exuberance and joie-de-vivre on the nose, displaying the telltale crushed violets in bloom, with precious but controlled red and black fruit underneath. The palate is sumptuous from the start, presenting cashmere tannin and perhaps a little more glycerine in this bottle. The bravura finish leaves you grinning from ear to ear. Stunning, and it will remain on its plateau for many years. Tasted at the 1989 Bordeaux dinner at Hatched in London. (NM)" (09/2019)

Bid on this bottle of 1989 Meyney, St-Estèphe. On the lighter side for Bordeaux, this consistent over-performer offers a great introduction to the region, and in the words of critic Robert Parker, "will prove uncommonly long-lived as well as profoundly flavored."

Bid on this bottle of 1989 Cheval Blanc, St-Emilion (98DC, 95VN, 94JG, 93ST, 93WS). Decanter: "Cheval Blanc saw 25% less rainfall than average in this vintage. Summer was hot but not a heatwave – the grapes were brought in from 7 September to 5 October, the earliest harvest date in the 20th century, and there are clear hints of prune and fig, but with menthol and eucalyptus touches that give it a fresh lift and suggest that blockages of maturity just might have been the key to its longevity. Concentrated, sexy, opulent, lifted through the finish, just smoky enough. The blend, by the way, is not exact because Cabernet Sauvignon was counted with the Cabernet Franc right up until 2014. However, plantings were recorded as 54% Merlot and 46% Cabernet Franc, with a high yield of 50hl/ha (the average between 1946 and 2014 is 33hl/ha, so this is significant). Bid on this bottle of 1989 Jasmin Côte-Rôtie. Domaine Jasmin remains a family run estate currently managed by Patrick Jasmin who took over from his father Robert in 1999. The winery is one of just few estates to blend the majority of its production from eight lieux-dits into one Côte-Rôtie bottling. According to the importer: "The flagship wine has always borne the floral perfume of its small amount of Viognier, and it deftly marries the elegance from such granitic sites as Coteaux de Tupin and Côte Blonde with the schist-derived power of 1920’s Sérine vines in the Brune sector’s Moutonnes and Côte Baudin."

Bid on this bottle of 1989 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage (100DC, 97VN, 96RP, 95JD). Decanter: "1990 is rightly touted as one of the greatest Rhône vintages, but it overshadows the excellent preceding year. Chave's 1989 is masterful. Still with a little blackcurrant and raspberry fruit, this has spicy, savoury faces and a gruff, grunty element. It's still full in body but the tannins are fading now, whereas fresh acidity remains, and it's sinewy in texture, reminiscent of an old man's musculature. It's rounded and fruity on the palate, with plenty of nutmeg, cinnamon, burning fireworks and woodsmoke, joined by a little truffle and cheese rind with some air. It's saline on the finish, showing spectacular length still with some sweet raspberry and kirsch. Highly complex and utterly authentic: unmistakable terroir. (MW)" (06/2019)

Bid on this bottle of 1989 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien (98DC, 96WS). Decanter: "1989 was an early year, with flowering three weeks ahead of usual. Now at 30 years old, a floral aspect curls out of the glass, with touches of roses and peonies, followed on the palate by bilberries and blackberries, with a cigar smoke and eucalyptus finish. It's still vigorous in its tannic structure, but it's soft and supple enough to enjoy today. This bottle was recorked by hand at the winery last year, with five people checking every single one of the 5, 000 bottles remaining at the chateau. The wines were topped up from magnums of the 1989. 3% Petit Verdot completes the blend - a variety not used in the grand vin since 1996. (JA)" (11/2018)
