Bid on this magnum of 2011 Saxum "Booker Vineyard" Paso Robles Syrah-Mourvèdre (1.5L) (96RP, 94ST, 94VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Beautifully done, and probably the most elegant, seamless version of this cuvee I’ve tasted, the 2011 Booker Vineyard offers terrific aromas and flavors of liquid violets, sappy underbrush, smoked , exotic spices and plenty of crushed rock-like minerality that are all carried by layers of sweet cassis and black raspberry. There’s a northern Rhone-like character here, but it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, fantastic mid-palate concentration, and a seamless, layered and multi-dimensional mouthfeel that’s hard to resist. Made from 67% Syrah and 33% Mourvedre and aged in 300- and 350-liter hogsheads (and fermented with varying degrees of whole cluster), this beautifully pure, polished and complex effort will benefit from short-term cellaring and have over 15 years of overall longevity. Made from a blend of 41% Syrah, 19% Grenache, 16% Petite Sirah, 13% Mourvèdre and the balance Tempranillo and Roussanne, this inky colored beauty offers terrific notes of mostly blue fruits (blackberries, blueberries), crushed violets, Asian spices and forest floor. Full-bodied, concentrated, elegant and seamless on the palate, it has a ripe tannin and a gorgeous finish. Highly expressive blackberry, cherry preserve, licorice pastille, Moroccan spice and potpourri scents are complemented by a smoky mineral overtone. Seamless and broad in the mouth, offering deeply concentrated black/blue fruit liqueur, cherry cola and candied violet flavors that become livelier as the wine opens up. Jeb Dunnuck: "As with the Bone Rock, there are only four barrels of the 2015 James Berry Vineyard Rocket Block, a blend of 89% Grenache and 11% Mataró, from a tiny parcel, that was all co-fermented. Offering the essence of kirsch liqueur, ground pepper, gravelly minerality, herbes de Provence, and licorice, it reminds me of a great vintage of Domaine de Marcoux’s Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes. Massive and opulent on the palate, yet pure, elegant, and refined, with silky tannins, it’s as good as wine gets. Hats off to Smith for another magical wine." (10/2019)
