2019 Bodegas Aleanna "El Enemigo" Chardonnay Mendoza
Top Pick!
96 points James Suckling: "Cooked apple, lemon curd and light vanilla on the nose, together with stone, mineral and some dried flowers. Medium to full body with a creamy texture and beautiful fruit. Hints of vanilla and pie crust in the aftertaste. Always great quality for the price. Drink or hold." (03/2021) 94 points Vinous: "The 2019 Chardonnay El Enemigo from Gualtallary, Uco Valley, was aged for nine months in 500-liter barrels, partially in flor. Yellow with golden flecks. The aromas deliver cedar, hazelnut, hints of white fruit, a touch of yeast...

From biodynamically farmed Torrontes, this wine is produced from some of the highest elevation vines in production anywhere in the world, at more than 7,000 feet above sea level! Very floral aromas with juicy yellow plums and white peaches lead to a lovely, slightly spicy and floral, yet refreshing palate. Another great effort from one of our favorite Argentinian wineries.

This is a small production project from the northern Cafayate region, idea for growing crisp white wines like this. Importer Michael Skurnik tells the story: "The dos minas ("two chicks" in Argentine slang) of the name are Lucía Romero, who runs Bodega El Porvenir de los Andes in Cafayate, Argentina, and Heather Willens, who came to Buenos Aires via California and has experience working with small wineries in Argentina. Both are champions of wines from the mystical desert landscapes of Cafayate, and both believe that Torrontés is a wonderfully aromatic, ...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2020 Semillon was produced with grapes from a vineyard at 1,100 meters in altitude and fermented mostly in stainless steel but with 15% of the volume in new barriques. So, the wine has a combination of fruit and spicy aromas. It's medium-bodied and has retained 13.3% alcohol from a warm and dry harvest, and it's nicely textured, as the grape is more about mouthfeel than aromas. (LG)" (03/2021)

92 points James Suckling: "Peach-skin, apricot, dried-lime and flint aromas. It’s medium-to full-bodied with sharp acidity that cuts through creamy layers of ripe fruit. Intense, mineral and smoky finish. Semillon and chenin." (05/2021) 92 points Vinous: "The 2020 Catena Appellation White Clay Lujan de Cuyo is a blend of 60% Sémillon and 40% Chenin Blanc from Luján de Cuyo that spent up to eight months in French barrels. Yellow with a golden sheen. The nose is dominated by white flowers, honey and the aging process. In the mouth, this is voluminous wit...

94 points James Suckling: "Very flinty and minerally on the nose with some aniseed and sliced green-apple aromas that follow through to a medium-to full-bodied palate with a creamy texture and pretty apple, citrus and nougat flavors. Creamy and long. Subtle and fine. From the owner of Chacra and Burgundy’s Jean-Marc Roulot. Very drinkable now, but will improve." (03/2021) K&L Notes: Done in collaboration with Jean-Marc Roulot. Vines are planted in mineral soils with alluvial stones covered in calcaire. Aged: 18% in concrete eggs, 25% in stainless steel...

99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The amazing 2019 White Stones Chardonnay comes from a select group of 27 rows planted on lot I of the Adriana Vineyard, and the composition of those rows is soil with white oval stones covered by gravel. The Adriana Vineyard is planted at an altitude of almost 1,500 meters above sea level, in the district of Gualtallary in Tupungato. The stony soil prevents deep root growth, providing optimum drainage. This soil, which is very poor in organic matter, contributes to the vines' permanent stress conditions. The cool...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The expressive and aromatic 2018 Blanco Edad Media is a blend of 60% Chardonnay, 30% Chenin Blanc and 10% Sauvignon Blanc that had a flinty and faintly reductive nose that I loved. The wine developed a thin layer of yeasts, and the effect is very subtle but it lifts the wine up and does not take over its character. The palate was austere and mineral, with some chalky tannins and a supple, tasty finish. 5,500 bottles were filled in February 2019." (10/2019) 93 points Vinous: "Bright medium yellow. Bracing aromas...

97 points James Suckling: "There’s real direction and clarity to this white with sliced dried apples, crushed stones and minerals on the nose, as well as hints of biscuit and praline. Some honeysuckle and lemon-grass undertones, too. It’s full-bodied, yet very tight and lively with a line of fresh acidity running through the palate, providing energy and depth. From the owner of Chacra and Burgundy’s Jean-Marc Roulot. Drinkable now, but much better in three to four years. Try after 2023." (03/2021) K&L Notes: Done in collaboration with Jean-Marc Roulot....

This is the brainchild of Matias Michelini. He is the winemaker, agronomist and Grand Poobah of his winery named Passionate Wines. Matias strives to make experimental wines that express terroir. These wines are low production and are drawn from multiple inspirations, regions, and styles. Biodynamically grown Sauvignon Blanc from high elevation calcerous soils.
