This 2010 Gran Reserva from our favorite Rioja winery is back in stock! As is the case with so many other great spots in Spain, Bodega Casa Juan is located opposite the village church, in the beautiful walled pueblo of Laguardia. The winery is a converted flour mill, featuring concrete tanks for fermenting and blending the wine, and barrels that are used for up to seven years. These are traditional Riojas in elaboration and spirit, though the site specificity of their Laguardia and Villabuena vineyards confers a fruit character all its own to these wines...

Mas Codina is a 40-hectare estate in Alt Penedès which dates back to 1681. This Gran Reserva Cava was hand-harvested from 25- to 40-year-old vines and estate-bottled. Vines are planted in calcareous and sandy clay soils which keep the wine minerally and lively. Varietals include Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. 100% hand-riddled, it has spent over 30 months on its lees and is bottled with no dosage.

95 points Tim Atkin: "Very much a reflection of its cool, almost marginal terroir, this is one of the best Viñedo Singular reds. Made from Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha and 4% Viura, it's a subtle, chiselled, graceful red with racy acidity, stony minerality, floral top notes and a core of red cherry and pomegranate fruit. 2023-35" (02/2022) 94 points Wine Advocate: "The wine labeled in 2016 as Gran Vino and in 2017 as Viñedo Singular has finally been simplified to 2018 Finca la Emperatriz Tinto with the category of Viñedo Singular, the new official sin...

Mas Codina is a 40-hectare estate in Penedès, which dates back to 1681. This Brut Rosé consists of Pinot Noir grown in their own vineyards in the middle Penedès region. Here the Garriga brothers are quite pleased with the results they see from the Pinot Noir grown in chalky-clay soils. They have been working organically for the past several years, and their first harvest doing so with certification was 2017. We direct import this delicious Cava, and it is arguably one of our best values in rosé bubbly right now. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)

La Peligrosa Garnacha is a vibrant and bold red wine crafted from old-vine Grenache grapes in Spain's Sierra de Gredos region. Known for its intense flavors of ripe red berries, spices, and a hint of earthy minerality, this wine offers a rich and velvety texture. La Peligrosa Garnacha exemplifies the unique terroir of the region, providing a captivating and robust drinking experience.
95 points Decanter: "Finca La Emperatriz is situated close to the borders of the Rioja appellation, in one of the coolest areas in the whole region. So much so that a little bit more to the west, vine cultivation is not feasible. It is also at relatively high altitude – almost 600m – which is particularly beneficial for white grape varieties. Grapes for this wine are Viura from poor soils, which were cool-macerated before crushing. Partly fermented and aged in barrels, partly in concrete vats, with lees contact, for 10 months before bottle ageing. Pedro ...

92 points James Suckling: "Subtle creamy oak to the ripe blue and black berries. Plush, integrated oak here that extends onto the medium-bodied palate with plenty of chocolate to the juicy berries. Tight, grippy and long. " (06/2023) 92 points Tim Atkin: "Jardín only uses grapes from the Hernáiz brothers' estate in Baños de Rioja and is a cuvée of Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha. Matured in a combination of American and 30% French oak, it's a subtle, graceful, refreshing blend with lots of sappy red berry fruit and granular tannins. 2024-29" (02/2024) 9...

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Most of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 20 hectares, which are north-facing and located at 600 meters in altitude, affording the visitor with one of the most dramatically beautiful views of Rioja's main mountain ranges: the Sierra Cantabria mountains immediately to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda mountains to the south. This white win...

91 points Wine Advocate: "The young 2023 Albariño is varietal and has the imprint of the sandy and granite soils. It has good ripeness and 13% alcohol, keeping very good acidity and freshness (pH 3.29 and 7.46 grams of acidity), with a bittersweet twist in the finish. It's clean, round and tasty. They produce 50,000 bottles and do different bottlings of the same blend, keeping the wine in stainless steel with the lees. 93 points Tim Atkin: ""I like wood on Albariño, as long as it's subtle," says Sonia Castro and that's certainly the case here. Stainless steel fermented before ageing in foudres, it has the classic focus and chiselled acidity of the 2021 vintage in the Salnés Valley, with flavours of lemon juice, green apple and orange zest and a hint of baking spice sweetness. 2024-30" (11/2024) 92 points Wine Advocate: "2021 was a cooler and rainier year with higher acidity, so some wines went through (partial) malolactic. 92 points Tim Atkin: ""It's very hard to stand out as a Crianza," says David González, but he's managed it with this very well-judged bottling of Tempranillo and 25% Garnacha. Subtly wooded and refreshing, with crunchy black fruits, bright acidity, granular tannins and fine balance. 2023-28" (02/2023) K&L Notes: Luis Gutiérrez' notes on the producer for Wine Advocate: "Consistent with the philosophy of recovering the old brands of the winery, they have created two new wines—Viña Dorana Reserva and El Predilecto—and they stopped producing Gómez Cruzado ...

Finca Garabato is a parcel of Valtea's oldest wines. This wine spends a year in tank with extended lees contact. This gives the wine a lovely richness, which really ramps up the flavor and textural qualities of the wine. Still refreshing, only richer than the regular Valtea bottling and ready to take on a meal.

94 points Tim Atkin: "iguel Merino makes this exceptional white from an equal mix of Viura and Garnacha Blanca, both sourced from old-vine parcels in Briones. Gently wooded in 500-litre barrels, it's a wine that’s inspired by white Burgundy, with struck match reduction, layers of lime, citrus and lanolin, and a persistent finish. 2024-30" (02/2024) 93 points Wine Advocate: "93+ points "The white 2022 Blanco was produced with 50/50 Garnacha Blanca (planted in 1946 in their La Loma vineyard) and Viura from various old plots. The winery of Finca la Emperatriz is a single estate property in the way that we think of with Bordeaux. It should be of no surprise seeing that the former owner of the property was none other than Eugénie de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III and last Empress of France, whom the property is named after. 90 points James Suckling: "Crushed blackberries, dark plums and spices extend to a fruity, medium-bodied palate, wrapped by firm and dusty tannins that will soften more in a year’s time. A fruit-forward, balanced and well-made Rioja." (07/2022) 90 points Wine Advocate: "The very young and fruit-driven 2021 El Pedal Tempranillo is a ripe and juicy blend of Tempranillo with 4% Mazuelo (Cariñena) despite the contained 13.7% alcohol. It's serious, fresh, juicy, velvety and balanced. They told me 2020 (and 2021) was a vintage when the Cabernet Sauvignon ripened thoroughly. Partnering Tempranillo with 5% Graciano, it has patisserie and sweet spice aromas, layered tannins and subtle raspberry and wild strawberry fruit. 2024-30" (02/2024) K&L Notes: The Miguel Merino Gran Reserva is sourced from some of their very best sites, old vineyards that were planted in the 1950s and 1960s in so...

95 points Wine & Spirits: "Inocente is Valdespino’s flagship, a wine from the Macharnudo Alto vineyard, where the soil is pure white albariza. It ferments in 600-liter wooden casks without added yeasts, a practice that has become increasingly rare in Jerez. The intensity of the wine’s salinity is remarkable—iodine and salt—coming together with ripe white fruit, scents of nuts and exotic spices. The structure is dry and austere, like drinking the juice of stones. This will last for a decade in the cellar, but it’s impossible to hold onto a bottle if there...

Fermented in stainless steel and aged in concrete eggs for more texture, this is very much a coastal wine, with sea breeze salinity, a hint of fennel and beeswax and a focused, mineralrich core." It’s another zone of steep slopes and old vines – the variety in this case being Mencia (known as Jaen in Portugal’s Dão region). This is totally dark brown/amber with notes of figs, toffee, caramel syrup, molasses and coffee. It is dense, super sweet, intense, rich and an amazingly, unctuously textured, thick beverage to consume slowly and introspectively after a meal. Drink now through 2050, or even longer. (01/2024) 94 points Wine Advocate: "2017 was not an easy harvest, but it produced some beautiful and classical wines, like the 2017 Viña Ardanza Reserva, which shows a little more advancement and polish and is ready to drink. The wine is aged entirely in small American oak barrels for two years, with the first year in new wood and the second in “three wine” barrels. It's elegant, has typicity and is balanced and fresh, really impressive and clean. It matured in American and French oak barrels for 22 months and has been in bottle since August 2020, getting closer to the profile of a Gran Reserva. Impressive. 8,620 bottles produced. (02/2021) K&L Notes: Gómez Cruzado was one of the classical names in the historical Barrio de la Estación, but unfortunately quality slipped and they were forgotten for a long time. Our ninth vintage of this direct import Albariño! This shows everything we like in the grape: hints of lemongrass, lively stone fruit, and a brisk, saline-tinged palate. Located in the sub-zone of Condado do Tea, where the days are a bit warmer and evenings are slightly cooler, there is a wonderful mid-palate presence to complement the typically lean and mineral qualities of Albariño. A classic with any shellfish, especially Dungeness crab!

It has notes of blood orange and a citric touch of freshness that makes it very showy, aromatic and attractive. It has 14.5%, a pH of 3.5 and 5.1 grams of acidity, still parameters that denote good freshness, acidity and balance. It was a superb year, with quality, quantity and freshness. It's quite the opposite from the previous 2015, which was a much warmer and riper year. The 2016s have moderate alcohol and especially the perception of less ripeness (even though the alcohol is very similar). It feels very young, still quite primary. (Web-2014)" K&L Notes: A wonderful expression of Manzanilla, the La Cigarrera always comes to us very fresh, expressing the briny, sea air quality for which these wines are known. Gin Mare is a product we discovered in Scotland, of all places, years ago while searching for single malt. The retailer across the street from our hotel in Edinburgh was featuring the gin in a tasting that evening and we went over to check it out. Distilled in Spain with olives, rosemary, basil, and thyme, it's a savory and truly Mediterranean experience. The herbs never overpower the palate, however, as the balance between them is quite delicate and refined. It's definitely an ideal choice for martinis, paired with olives, of course.
