One of K&L's very finest buys from France. This is a reserve cuvée, made from Millet's chalkiest limestone soils. There is a long maceration at very low temperatures to extract as much flavor and character as possible. The resulting wine is intensely charged with stone fruit and minerality, and bright citrus notes. The wines of this family domaine have been a staple here at K&L since the 1994 vintage when Franck and Betty Millet drove a long way (to Beaune!) on Easter Sunday to meet Clyde and crew to present the wines. We love these wines for their fresh...

Domaine Cherrier was founded in 1930. Since then four generations of the family have run the estate. The domaine has limestone and calcareous clay soils that wonderfully influence the character of the grapes grown there. The Sancerre is consistently delicious, with citrus, chalky minerality and light floral notes. Its dry finish complements seafood and cheese beautifully. K&L French Regional buyer Keith Mabry says: "The Cherrier to me is always one of the biggest crowd-pleasing Sancerres/Sauvignon Blancs from anywhere in the world."

Winemaker Anthony Girard grew up in his family's Sancerre winery, but spent a number of years learning about wine production all over the world before returning home to continue working with Sauvignon Blanc. While helping with the namesake Girard label, Anthony wanted to create his own project on the side and eventually purchased a small plot of pristine real estate near the town of Récy, with primo Sancerre limestone soils. After acquiring the vines, he was given a large key as a symbolic gesture of new ownership, a "clef du récit," which became the nam...

The Millet Sancerre has been a favorite here at K&L for a long time. Grown in limestone-clay soil, the wine reflects the terroir wonderfully. The flavors are bright with lime, mineral, passion fruit, and that wonderful chalkiness one wants from a Sancerre. This wine over-delivers and pairs beautifully with oily seafood dishes, and of course, your favorite cheeses.

The wines of Aurore Dezat are a regular feature in our wine club offerings, and her vibrant Sancerre is an easy favorite among K&L staff as well. Aurore makes wine on her family estate in Sury-en-Vaux, which was established by her grandfather. Before Aurore took over the estate, most of the fruit was sold off through négociants. She has slowly phased out the négociant contracts. The estate is home to more than just vines, with grain crops and farm animals also finding a home there, but for Aurore, the focus is on the wine. She farms organically and empha...

Domaine Côtes Blanches was established in the 1930s by Bernard and Pierre Millet. In 1980, it was time for the second generation to take the reins, so François and Monique expanded the estate to 21 hectares of vines (15ha of Sauvignon, 6ha of Pinot Noir). After returning from his studies in Beaune, Nicolas (son of François and Monique) joined the family-run estate and brought a newly energized passion. The family is dedicated to the land and the environment by which they are surrounded. All farming is done organically, harvest dates are dictated by natur...

A family domaine that has been run by third-generation winemaker Aurore Dezat since 2011. Dezat farms 13 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir in the commune of Sury-en-Vaux with her partner David Girard. The Sauvignon Blanc is planted over limestone gravel known as Caillottes and the famed Kimmeridgian marl known as Terres Blanches. Les Chasseignes comes from a single parcel that is all on Terres Blanches. This marl is know for producing wines of richness with an underlying tension. The wine is fermented and aged in a mix of stainless steel tan...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This Touraine Sauvignon Blanc is rich and flavorsome. Lemon in color, it has a perfumed nose of golden apple, ripe summer pear, pineapple and orange zest. The wine has a round mouthfeel with juicy fruit dominating. Pair with heavier or sauce-driven dishes (RS)" (12/2023) K&L Notes: This family-owned domaine, located in the tiny Loire village of St-Julien-de-Chédon, dates back to 1804. Since 2009, Laurent Benoist has been at the helm, focusing his efforts on sustainable farming and pure, terroir-driven wines. As a region, Tou...

The husband and wife team of Franck and Betty Millet produce astounding Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre as well as this Pouilly-Fumé that has all of the expected freshness, mineral notes, and affordability that have made these wines a longtime K&L favorite. This is a beautiful, new addition to the Millet portfolio. We are excited to feature this Pouilly-Fumé from our dear friends, some of the best winemakers in Sancerre. Lean, crisp and focused, this wine has an excellent balance of chalky minerality, citrus, lemongrass, and orchard fruits. It’s a beautifu...

Nestled in the village of Verdigny, Domain Tabordet is run by brothers Yvon and Pascal Tabordet, who took the reins back in 1981. When the two brothers first took over the estate it consisted of three hectares (7.4 acres) in Sancerre. By 1988 they had added another 4.5 hectares of Sancerre and another 12 hectares (29.7 acres) in neighboring Pouilly-Fumé, just across the Loire River. Wine growing in Pouilly-Fumé dates back to the fifth century when the Romans dominated the area. In 1937 it became an official Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) of France...

Domaine Begude was purchased in 2003 by British couple James and Catherine Kinglake. The Kinglakes converted the vineyard to organic production, using only natural fertilizers and no irrigation. Today their wines are among our best direct imports with an array including Chardonnay, Viognier, Pinot Noir and even Grüner Veltliner. The wines are made by Laurent Girault, a native of Charente who has made wine all over France as well as New Zealand’s Central Otago region. Laurent’s winemaking style is clean, honest and done with little intervention. The Sauvi...

Drink or hold." (03/2023) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Shows nice brightness, with fleur de sel notes out front that give this zing from the get-go, followed by pink grapefruit oil, gooseberry and bitter almond hints. Domaine Cherrier was founded in 1930, and since then four generations of the family have run the estate. Brothers François and Jean-Marie work sustainably in all their vineyards. In 2010, they acquired 10 hectares of vines in the nearby region of Menetou-Salon. The estate has limestone and calcareous clay soils that wonderfully influence the character of the grapes grown there. K&L French Regional buyer Keith Mabry says: "For those seeking Sancerre quality but at a more competitive price, look no further than Menetou-Salon. The Cherrier brothers deli...
Maison Barrière and Château Beychevelle collaborate to create this wine that's a stunning value from Bordeaux. This blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon is a stellar value from Bordeaux. Grapes are hand-harvested and the juice undergoes a cold soak before 75% of it is barrel fermented and the other 25% is fermented in stainless steel. Crisp and mineral with vanilla tones on the nose, the palate is nicely rounded and full with citrus and tropical fruit. It is delicious with lighter foods and also quite refreshing on its own.
The family-owned domaine dates back to 1804, located in a tiny Loire village named St-Julien-de Chédon. Since 2009, Laurent Benoist has been at the helm, focusing his efforts on sustainable farming and pure, terroir-driven wines. As a region, Touraine has the flexibility to plant a wide range of varieties, so it’s different from the more formal areas such as Vouvray that only allows Chenin Blanc, or Sancerre, which only allows Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. In Touraine, they can grow Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Pin...

From a small family winery in the heart of Graves, this is a mineral-driven and vivacious white wine ideal for drinking early and often. 90 points Vinous: "Lime and mint combine on the 2021 Les Montaignes, making a tangy, shake-your-grass skirt sort of Sancerre. Hailing from a north-east facing site (so a less sunny exposition) in a cooler year than we've seen recently, this shows its zest and tang, which requires you to love acidity and the greener spectrum of flavors. It was fermented and aged for 12 months in amphora, allowing the fruit to shine. It fades a little quickly. (RG)" (07/2023)

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "The estate is noted for white wine, and this latest release lives up to the reputation. This textured, mainly Sauvignon Blanc wine has tight acidity set against wood aging and ripe citrus and white-fruit flavors. *Top 100 Cellar Selection of 2022* (RV)" (05/2022) 93 points Decanter: "Apricot, pear and apple on the nose with a soft lime tang. Great persistence and energy, fruit has been well controlled and this delivers a round but fresh and lively glass of wine with subtle minerality on show too. Crunchy apple, candied lemon...

From one of the most hallowed vineyards in Sancerre, and made by the scion of one of the pre-eminent families in Sancerre, Dominique Crochet's Les Chêne Marechand Sancerre is a gorgeously expressive wine. This vineyard near the village of Bué annually produces some of the most complex and collectible Sauvignon Blanc on the planet. It’s got all the telltale signs of a great Sauvignon Blanc, prominent lime zest, gooseberry and honey dew notes, but it’s also got weight. The grapes are from an old vineyard plot, dubbed "Le Chêne Marchand." It faces south whe...

94 points James Suckling: "So aromatic with banana-cream pie, smoke and lemon curd. Always subtle and complex. Full-bodied and very tight, offering a crushed-stone and cooked-apple finish with an intense dried-lemon undertone. 60% sauvignon blanc and 40% semillon. Drink after 2024, but already gorgeous." (03/2022) 93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Domaine De La Solitude (Pessac-Léognan) Blanc has a clean, classy nose of tart pineapple, honeyed guava, and sappy flowers to go with a medium to full-bodied, rich, fleshy, impressively textured style on the p...

94 points Decanter: "This parcel was planted in 1968 at 7,000 vines/ha, on limestone soils ('caillottes'), facing west. With flinty, calcareous and mineral aromas, Petit Chemarin has a complex, energetic and lively bouquet. The palate is crystalline, very precise, with racy acids, concentration, a fleshy mid-palate and a long and delicately perfumed finish. Exquisite equilibrium for this wine, which will shine even more in 5—10 years or more. 92 points Wine Advocate: "Francois Cotat’s 2011 Sancerre La Grand Cote – like its Monts Damnes counterpart – finished dry and with around 14.5% alcohol. Musky and otherwise haunting flora scents suggestive of narcissus, peony, and rowan are joined by grapefruit and herbal essences for a striking nose; then reemerge on a silken, expansive, succulent Persian melon- and bittersweet nut-oil-informed palate. It’s amazing the sense of primary juiciness and transparency to floral, nutty, herbal, and stony nuances conveyed in the long finish here, despite the wi...

95 points Vinous: "The 2019 Sancerre le Grand Chemarin is a tender and wonderfully elegant style that shows excellent concentration. It remains understated with a fine grip on the finish. The wine has a mouth coating texture, no doubt due to the limestone soils but also the Pinards' careful handling. This caresses the mouth with its restrained pear and ripe apple fruit. It's wonderfully welcoming at the beginning, but the finish is structured. Wherever the wine is in your mouth, it always exudes a sense of balance. (RG) " (08/2021)

95 points John Gilman: "I love every vintage of Clos la Néore produced by the Vatan family, but it is the cooler, leaner years like 2013 where I have had my greatest success aging this wine for the very long haul. The 2013 vintage has produced a wine here at 12.5 percent and this seems likely to age along the lines of vintages like 1988, 1993, 1997 and 1998 here, which are timeless examples of the magic of this terroir and the Vatan family’s guardianship. The 2013 Clos la Néore delivers a simply stunning young nose of lime, green apple, fresh mint, cryst...

94 points John Gilman: "I am so happy to see that the great work done here since 1959 by Edmond Vatan is being carried on in conjunction with his daughter Anne, as I have been a huge fan of these magical Sancerres since I first crossed paths with the brilliant 1988 vintage here. The 2011 Clos la Néore is another superb wine in the making, with a very classic aromatic and flavor profile and great potential for longevity (though perhaps not the steely spine of acidity of the 2010 here). The stunning nose offers up scents of lime, tart pear, a touch of almo...

The 2019 Harmonie is very pretty, mingling aromas of pear, peach, herbs, lemon, and hints of orchard fruits. The palate is pure, almost crystalline, with ripe acids, a fleshy texture and a nicely defined finish. Perfect for seafood. Gitton was established in 1945 with an eye toward producing traditional, single-vineyard Sancerre and has never wavered in its commitment to excellent wines. From one acre at their founding, they've grown to nearly 60 of the best in the region. All of their wines are estate grown and vinified with native yeasts. The Galinot is hand harvested from nearly 60-year-old vines in Sparnacian flint soil. There is something of virtue-in-necessity to the vineyard’s story. Planted in 1959, this hillside site is less than a hectare of flinty, silex soil, which makes...

The 'R' de Rieussec is produced from plots that do not have the required amount of botrytisation and by sorting the healthy grapes on the other plots. Fermentation takes place for 20% in new barrels. This technique gives the wine great potential for ageing, while preserving its freshness and the grape's fruity essence. From the winery, "Wines are fermented in barrels. The yields are sorted and each parcel is identified and isolated in a batch of barrels, in order to judge whether or not it can be used in the Grand Vin after fermentation. Several tastings...

90 points Wine Advocate: "The Francois Cotat 2011 Sancerre Les Monts Damnes went entirely dry, with 14.5% alcohol recognizable primarily in sheer volume conveyed on a polished, richly lees-endowed palate, but also in a bit of finishing heat. Scents – and thereafter, bitter-sweetly pungent palate presence – of coriander, cardamom, caraway and sage, are allied to succulent Persian melon and lightly cooked apple. There is a faint suggestion of sweetness, reportedly a function of the alcohol and fruit personality rather than above-threshold residual sugar. T...

Domaine du Salvard has seen five generations of the Delaille family since its founding in 1898. Today brothers Emanuel and Thierry farm forty-two hectares with the help of their father Gilbert, carrying on the time-honored traditional winemaking of their forefathers to produce a classic, elegant style of Cheverny. The blend is 85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Chardonnay from calcareous soils and vines ranging from 10-65 years of age.

93 points John Gilman: "The 2007 Monts Damnés” from Gérard Bouley is a brilliant example of the vintage that is drinking splendidly right out of the blocks, but clearly has the potential to age gracefully for at least a decade. I followed this wine in the open bottle over three days, and it only got better with each day. The stunning bouquet offers up scents of pink grapefruit, tangerine, green apple, complex, chalky soil tones, a touch of crushed sea shell, fresh mint and an exotic topnote of candied violets. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep ...

It shows the purity and precision of the vintage, has terrific mid-palate concentration, bright acidity, and a great finish. The blend is 80% Sauvignon and 20% Semillon, harvested from the 15th to the 24th of September, that's still resting in 50% new French oak. It's a stunning white in the making." Juicy and tight, with bracing acidity and a distinctly saline iodiney character. Picks up a bitter pear skin note with air and finishes with superb clarity and stony persistence. This is one for the cellar, as are all of Boulay's wines. Recent bottles of the Clos de Beaujeu 2005, 2000, 1997 and 1995 have shown extremely well. (JR)" (03/2010)
