94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The NV Champagne Brut Rose is an attractive pale salmon hue, with a fresh perfume of wild strawberry, ripe peach, white and red flowers, a hint of tropical fruit, and grapefruit. The palate is rounded, with fruit up front and through the mid-palate, and it has a silky and fresh lift. There is a wonderful ease and drinkability to this wine, which delivers balance and finesse. (AF)" (11/2022) 93 points James Suckling: "Attractive salmon color with aromas of dried strawberries and lemons, as well as hints of flowers. Full-bodied wi...

97 points James Suckling: "Perfumed with apple, green mangoes, perfume and honeysuckle. Medium-bodied with a creamy and integrated texture and a subtle finish. Bitters. Botanicals. Intense." (07/2023) 96 points Wine Spectator: "Vivid acidity and a chalky underpinning make a crystalline frame for finely detailed notes of ripe melon, mandarin orange, toasted brioche and candied ginger in this harmonious Champagne, which is expressive and expansive on the palate, but with a sense of finesse and restraint. Long and creamy on the mineral-laced finish. (AN)"...

This 100% estate grown, Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs is made entirely with old Chardonnay selections from Mesnil, Cramant, and Oger. This is our number one most re-purchased Champagne, and it is often sold out! We have been working with Champagne Launois, located in the Grand Cru of Mesnil, for more than 16 years now, and they are our number one seller for good reason. Highly recommended.

Don't let the name change fool you, this is the same great Champagne that used to be called "Carte Blanche". The Ariston Aspasie reserve is made of 40% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, and 30% Meunier. A balanced cuvée in every way, this Champagne is clean and powerful at once. It has a natural toasty quality from spending five full years on the lees, and plenty of refreshing zip from the far northern location of the vineyards. No bottle in our inventory transports me to Champagne like this one. It is as true to the terroir and as pure as anything I could wis...

90 points James Suckling: "A dense and fruity wine with cooked-apple and lemon flavors. A hint of biscuit. Creamy texture. Subtle finish. " (09/2019) K&L Notes: Baron-Fuenté is a négociant that owns almost 90 acres of vines and purchases another 90 acres "sur pied," meaning that they pick the grapes. This is an important distinction since many négociants buy "sur lattes," meaning in bottle! This delicious Champagne is composed of 10% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, and 60% Meunier and had been aged three years on the lees. It is fermented at relatively col...

Without a doubt, this is one of the best Champagnes we carry at any price. This is made from the Launois "mother vines" the massal selected old vines planted from 1947-1953 on the best mid-slope sites of their grand cru vineyards in Mesnil, Oger and Cramant. This is the last special club that they will ever produce, as they are moving to a proprietary tete-de-cuvee in the future. This shows off how well Chardonnay did in 2013 with laser like focus and a display of chalk that is hard to find in any other bottling, but at the same time remains creamy and g...

100 points James Suckling: "This is really something. Electric on the palate. The aromas are so complex with sliced fresh and dried ginger, subtle pie crust, tarte tatin and hints of nutmeg with some salted caramel. Toasted bread, too. Always subtle. The palate is full- to medium-bodied yet hemmed-in with a freshness and balance that draws you back. Savory and vibrant. It's full of energy. Spectacular. Fascinating." (07/2023) 96 points Wine Advocate: "A blend of the 2012, 2008 and 2007 vintages, the NV Brut Grand Siècle #26 won't be released for anothe...

"The first ever straight vintage rosé from the masters of the style at Billecart. This wine is composed of 55% Chardonnay from the grand crus of Chouilly, Mesnil and Cramant and 45% Pinot Noir from Verzenay, Mareuil and Ludes. The red wine comes from ancient vines in the Valleofois vineyard just next to the Clos des Goisses in Mareuil. This incredible wine has the pure, subtle fruit that this great house is famous for on a frame that is as delicate and fine as one could imagine. The finish is nearly blanc de blanc like, with excellent lift and great chal...

92 points Decanter: "There’s a touch of pepper and juniper here, it’s full-bodied, very savoury style. The tannins are just-ripe and it’s well balanced with a long finish—there's tension and power here rather than concentration of fruit, and it will take a while to really reveal itself. This will be one of the longer-lasting Liracs of the vintage. (MW)" (09/2019) K&L Notes: An 88-acre estate, Château de Montfaucon sits just across the Rhône River from the esteemed vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is owned and operated by Rodolphe de Pins, a U.C. D...
This Champagne comes from a very special plot in Monthelon, just behind the Le Brun house on a southeast facing slope. It is entirely Meunier, half of which was planted in 1952 and the other half in 1902; the oldest living vines that I have seen in Champagne. The village of Monthelon is in the Côteaux de Sud Épernay, one of the coldest microclimates in Champagne, and that cold climate, in tandem with these ancient vines, has given us a truly epic wine. Alex’s craft has added to this — he uses a combination of small oak and large foudres for this wine alo...

The Veuve Clemence gets four years of aging on the lees to the Reserve's three, and comes from older vineyards. They are both entirely estate-grown, Grand Cru Chardonnay. Before now, this cuvée was only available for the French market, but because of our great relationship with Launois, we were able to convince them to sell us a little. If you like it, don't hesitate - they may not have more for us the next time I order. While the wine certainly has mid-palate power, it is a dry, serious Champagne that loves to be paired with shellfish and is a wonder wi...

Damien Hugot is a 25th-generation grower, with 20 acres of estate vineyards, mostly in the Grand Crus of Cramant and Chouilly. The Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs is composed entirely of Chouilly and Cramant, and mostly from old massal selected vines. This wine, which is 100% Chardonnay, has incredible richness and great toastiness for a Blanc de Blancs. We are very proud to import these wines directly, and offer them at such good prices. If you are looking for a bottle of Champagne that has both toast and the classy chalk of the best vineyards for Chardonnay,...

This Champagne is composed of two-thirds Pinot Noir and one-third Chardonnay. The Champagne has a graceful, delicate balance that Verzenay wines sometimes lack but with the signature hazelnut Pinot core. I found it to have creaminess to complement its racy cherry fruit on the palate and an extraordinarily long, dry finish. It is dosed at 9 grams per liter: very dry! It will age very well. The Arnoulds own 27 acres in the village of Verzenay, a quite sizable holding in this high-rent area. It is planted to 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, which is avera...

Layered and delicious NV. 40% pinot meunier, 30% chardonnay and 30% pinot noir. " (07/2022) 91 points Wine Advocate: "Based on the 2018 vintage, with 55% of reserve wines, the NV Brut Réserve from Billecart-Salmon is a blend of 40% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir, with a dosage of 6.2 grams per liter. One of K&L's very finest buys from France. This is a reserve cuvée, made from Millet's chalkiest limestone soils. There is a long maceration at very low temperatures to extract as much flavor and character as possible. The resulting wine is intensely charged with stone fruit and minerality, and bright citrus notes. The wines of this family domaine have been a staple here at K&L since the 1994 vintage when Franck and Betty Millet drove a long way (to Beaune!) on Easter Sunday to meet Clyde and crew to present the wines. We love these wines for their fresh...

This is a charming Chardonnay from a small grower in the Mâcon. Lionel Rhedon-Marin is a graduate of the College of Viticulture in the nearby village of Davaye, where Guffens trained. All of their young-vine fruit is sold in bulk to one of the better negociants, who is pleased to have it, since Lionel is such a careful grower. But their old-vine fruit, all over 45 years of age, is kept for the domaine wine, which is charming and elegant. This is a balanced, well-made and wonderfully crisp and mineral-driven Mâcon. Only K&L's direct import makes this pric...
This Champagne used to be called Elisabeth Goutorbe Cuvée Éclatante. Elisabeth changed the name over to her married name Egrot when she and her husband moved out of her parents' facility in Aÿ, and into their own. It is a 100% estate-grown, direct-import gem. It is a blend of two thirds Pinot Noir and one third Chardonnay, mostly from the grand crus of Ay and Louvois and including some from the premier crus of Tauxieres and Mutigny. Dosage is a little under 8 grams per liter. This wine has the silky texture and tiny streamers that only patience brings. ...

Our best deal in pink bubbles! Fans of Billecart-Salmon take note: this is an elegant, dry style that is made entirely from estate-grown fruit in Brouillet. This Champagne is a blend of half and half Pinot Noir and Meunier. The color comes from 12% Meunier that is vinified red, from an old-vine plot that gets quite ripe. It is a very pretty tarnished pink color and has a lazy bead from over five years of aging on the lees. It has gorgeous red cherry fruit on the nose and mid-palate, but still finishes snappy and dry. The wine also has a nice mineral note...

Jancis Robinson: "Apple blossom and minty. Dry, but gentle thanks to the soft bubbles. More tingling than fizzing. Green apples, pomelo pith and peel, chicory leaf and a tiny hint of nectarine. Mauzac stripped bare. I'd love to try this with cockles! (TC)" (07/2020) K&L Notes: Antech's Brut Nature is produced with no added dosage, which translates to a super clean and crisp glass of bubbly. It is composed of 90% Mauzac, 5% Chenin Blanc, and 5% Chardonnay. All harvesting is done by hand. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, and the wine undergoe...

Alexandre Le Brun is the smallest producer that we import, or even carry from Champagne at just 7.5 acres. He only makes wine from half of the grapes he brings in, selling the rest off to negociants--his production is just one thousand cases a year total. This tiny scale allows Alex to do nearly everything himself and this hands-on approach shows through in the finished product. He only uses his own estate fruit for his Champagne, and this wine comes from just two rows in the grand cru of Chouilly, in a plot called La Derriere du Mont Aigu. This is elect...

If you have enjoyed the wines of Lallement, Bollinger, and Krug in the past, I think you will very much enjoy Michel Arnould. They are bold, masculine Champagnes with plenty of toasty flavor. This is a blend of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay, entirely from estate vineyards in the Grand Cru of Verzenay. This is a great party Champagne, since it is full of flavor yet refreshing and moreish. The hazelnut Pinot character, so unique to the village of Verzenay, is pronounced in this wine, and many good tasters have mistaken it for barrel fermentation (it is...

The Quartz comes from the famous Les Chétillons parcel in Le Mesnil sur Oger and has four atmospheres (59 psi) of pressure instead of the normal six (88 psi). While I would be hard pressed to tell by looking at or tasting this Champagne that it has lighter carbonation, it tastes very different from the Reserve due to the wonderful vineyard site. Since less yeast and sugar were added to the wine during bottling, it has less leesy flavor, and because there is less dissolved carbon dioxide in the wine the flavors of the grapes underneath shine more. Look fo...

This all estate-grown Champagne is pure Pinot Meunier from vineyards in Troissy. It is on the richer side of brut, and full of exotic spice, fruit, and even some toasty, chanterelle-like notes. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

Elisabeth Goutorbe and her husband Jean-Marie Egrot run their tiny production Champagne house almost entirely by themselves. They get very little help from their cat Maurice, but can rely on Elisabeth’s father, René Goutorbe of Champagne Henri Goutorbe for a little bit of help. Of the 15 acres they own in Ay, Louvois, Tauxieres and Mutigny, they only keep the fruit from their 2.5 best—mostly in Ay, but also a touch of Louvois Chardonnay for balance. Their home straddles the border of Ay and Mutigny, two great terroirs in the Gand Valley of the Marne, whi...

Domaine Cherrier was founded in 1930. Since then four generations of the family have run the estate. The domaine has limestone and calcareous clay soils that wonderfully influence the character of the grapes grown there. The Sancerre is consistently delicious, with citrus, chalky minerality and light floral notes. Its dry finish complements seafood and cheese beautifully. K&L French Regional buyer Keith Mabry says: "The Cherrier to me is always one of the biggest crowd-pleasing Sancerres/Sauvignon Blancs from anywhere in the world."

Jancis Robinson: "As they don't grow anything but Chardonnay, they buy Pinot Noir from Paul Dethune in Ambonnay. 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir (as red wine). Stainless steel, 100% malo. Dosage 8.3 g/l. More fruity than their whites. Blood orange with a touch of sweetness that I didn’t find in the white wines. Lime bonbon. Dusty spices on the finish, like fine-ground walnut skin. This is very satisfying. Plump in the middle. Wonderful food rosé. (TC)" (05/2023) K&L Notes: This little bottle of rosé is delicious! This is the first time we have had th...

Pure and focused, yet with plenty of mid-palate depth as well as richness, this gorgeous Valréas is going to drink nicely for a decade." (03/2023) 93 points James Suckling: "Here’s a very good example of Valreas that has the combination of southern warmth and mountain freshness that we ...

The unprecedented Tres Vieux Brut de Fut is one of the most memorable and unique offerings from any producer in Cognac. Bouju is well known for speaking out in the region against the use of additives and has carved out a niche as one of the few Grand Champagne producers willing to offer unfiltered, uncut, full-strength Cognac. This brandy is the house's top offering and represents some of the oldest stocks with a minimum age of 40 years. The color is dark like coffee and when we inquired about that insanely dark color, Bouju explained that long term agin...

Château de Sarenceau is a family property and the 4th generation runs it today. This small estate of only 9 hectares allows a precise and careful work of the vines. This is the first time we have carried this property and it was our biggest buy on April 2022 trip. Rare enough to be underlined, this Saint-Emilion is a 100% Merlot! It offers an evolved nose, with notes of truffle, plum and licorice. The mouth opens with a lot of fruit and freshness, and it finishes with ripe black fruit flavors. A great wine from a great vintage. Will cellar well 10 mor...
Winemaker Anthony Girard grew up in his family's Sancerre winery, but spent a number of years learning about wine production all over the world before returning home to continue working with Sauvignon Blanc. While helping with the namesake Girard label, Anthony wanted to create his own project on the side and eventually purchased a small plot of pristine real estate near the town of Récy, with primo Sancerre limestone soils. After acquiring the vines, he was given a large key as a symbolic gesture of new ownership, a "clef du récit," which became the nam...

Although not labeled as such, this is a Blanc de Noir composed of 60% Meunier and 40% Pinot Noir. It is aged for over four years on the lees and dosed at about 10 grams per liter. It has a lovely combination of spiced pear, pie crust, and black cherry on the very generous, open nose. The wine is broad, rich, and textural in the mouth, and has a persistent black fruit finish.

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "From an Aisne-based producer, this bone-dry Champagne also has plenty of richness that shows though in the ripe texture of the Pinot Noir. (RV)" (12/2021) 91 points James Suckling: "Intense nose of toast, dried pineapple, lemon rind, walnut, cocoa bean and Virginia tobacco. Medium-bodied with sharp acidity and soft bubbles. Mineral, austere and toasty character. Bone dry." (09/2021) K&L Notes: This super well-balanced bottle of Champagne gets an astoundingly luxurious seven years of aging on the lees! The Millet Sancerre has been a favorite here at K&L for a long time. Grown in limestone-clay soil, the wine reflects the terroir wonderfully. The flavors are bright with lime, mineral, passion fruit, and that wonderful chalkiness one wants from a Sancerre. This wine over-delivers and pairs beautifully with oily seafood dishes, and of course, your favorite cheeses.

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The base 2020 Ventoux has a beautiful, exotic nose of wild raspberries, strawberries, candied violets, and peppery garrigue. This flows to a medium-bodied, pure, incredibly elegant Ventoux that has plenty of chalky minerality, a seamless mouthfeel, good overall freshness, and enough structure to allow it to evolve for 10-12 years. It's beautifully done." (01/2022) K&L Notes: Located in the foothills of Mont Ventoux lies one of the top producers in the Ventoux region of the Rhône - Domaine de Fondrèche. Vigneron Sebastien Vincent...
Wine Enthusiast: "Dominated by Pinot Noir, this rich Champagne, mainly from the 2014 harvest, is full of mature fruitiness that is discovering toasty flavors. The bottling is now coming into its own. (RV)" (12/2021) K&L Notes: This all-estate Champagne is aged for six years on the lees and is composed of 70% Pinot Noir, 15% Chardonnay and 15% Meunier. This wine has very fine, brioche-like aromas from the long sur-lie aging, as well as a savory cherry note from the high-quality Pinot. It is very rich and long in the mouth, with a fine bead, again from l...

Wine Enthusiast: "With its high proportion of Meunier, this Champagne is a ripe generous wine that has rich pear and kiwi flavors that are full and tangy. (RV)" (12/2020) K&L Notes: This Champagne is composed of 70% Pinot Meunier and 30% Pinot Noir and is aged three and a half years on the lees. The exotic, pure Meunier fruit in this Champagne marries with the creamy, delicately toasty aromas and flavors. The wine has no trace of sherry-like oxidation or bruised apple malic character that Meunier-based Champagnes sometimes have. On the contrary, this i...
91 points James Suckling: "This has aromas of grapefruit, pomegranates, and biscuits. It’s honeyed and sleek with a medium body and supple bubbles. Soft and creamy finish. Majority pinot noir, with chardonnay and meunier. Around 40% reserve wines. 10g/l dosage." (02/2023) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This ever-popular Champagne is getting imperceptibly drier. Château Bois-Malot is located in St-Loubes and situated on the shoreline of the Dordogne River. The soils are clay and light limestone with a subsoil of red pebbles and clay. The wine is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc and is aged for 18 months in tanks, followed by six months in barrels. If you like framboise you will adore this wine — 2015 was a huge success for this property. The Ariston's vineyards are vastly different than those of the other blanc de blancs producers that we carry. The steeper slopes, less chalk and more fossils in the soil of Brouillet make for a rich, creamy style of Chardonnay Champagne that will appeal to just about anyone. This is one of my favorite toasting Champagnes. All of the flavors are up-front; it is open-knit and fun. It is a perfect way to start a party. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

The Verquière estate has been passed down from father to son for four generations and is now managed by Thibaut Chamfort. Following age-old traditions and sustainable practices, the estate was certified organic in 2014. The Côtes-du-Rhône is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, grown on chalky clay soils with loads of large pebbles in the vineyards. This has become one of our favorite everyday reds out of the South of France and we're confident you ...

This Champagne comes from one plot of 70-year-old Chardonnay vines in the Montagne of Reims village of Trepail. It is aged for three years on the lees. The Champagne has a chalky, creamy, bread bakery-esque nose, and a concentrated impression on the palate. As one would expect from such ancient vines, it delivers the goods on the finish with plenty of chalk as well as a bit of honey and white fruit. This makes a perfect aperitif, but will also pair well with seafood such as seared scallops or even raw oysters. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

The wines of Aurore Dezat are a regular feature in our wine club offerings, and her vibrant Sancerre is an easy favorite among K&L staff as well. Aurore makes wine on her family estate in Sury-en-Vaux, which was established by her grandfather. Before Aurore took over the estate, most of the fruit was sold off through négociants. She has slowly phased out the négociant contracts. The estate is home to more than just vines, with grain crops and farm animals also finding a home there, but for Aurore, the focus is on the wine. She farms organically and empha...

This non-vintage Special Cuvée is an example of a classic Champagne done well. Notes of marzipan on the nose and the palate give toastiness and leesy notes, specifically sourdough. Jean-Michel Giboulot took over the family business in 1982 and has put together one of the best bang-for-your-buck portfolios in all of Burgundy over the last three-plus decades. This great bottle comes from the far northern edge of Champagne in the Massif St-Thierry, north of Reims. All of the vines for this 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Meunier cuvée come from Cormincy, the last village in Champagne before the flats facing out towards the Ardennes. As one would expect from a Blanc de Noir, this is a full-bodied wine with plenty of savory red fruit flavor. Due to its far northern provenance, this Champagne also has great snap and refreshment to balance out its power. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)
