Produced from a small estate plot, this Armagnac is aged in 400L barrels and was distilled entirely in 1979. From the importer: "Domaine Séailles is one of the pioneers of organic viticulture in the Côtes de Gascogne region of Southwest France. A family-owned estate since 1961, Séailles is now run by Jean Labérenne, who lead the domaine to Ecocert organic certification in 1997, swearing off all chemical fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, and synthetic chemical products. Domaine Séailles' Armagnacs from the 1970s are absolutely lights out. The balance between fine French oak and shockingly bright fruit—especially for such old brandies—is hauntingly beautiful. The tiny estate only has 2.5 acres of Ugni Blanc dedicated to Armagnac on Ténarèze's famous clay limestone soils, and they manage to produce extremely high quality brandy for very affordable prices. The '75 sits at a wonderful 46% ABV and is so approachable that it may just become the go-to pour for you and your guests.

Styles vary tremendously across Armagnac and Domaine Séailles' flavor profile falls firmly in the middle between the two extremes of woody or fruity. The small 2.5 acre plot of Ugni Blanc on clay limestone soils makes for a brandy that has generous fruit, but a mineral backbone that stands up to long aging in French oak. As the brandy crests the 30 year mark it begins to develop distinct secondary sweetness notes as the fruit/wood interplay develops. Lots of maple/molasses/honey tones mark the '89 without sacrificing fruit. The stone fruit flavors jump o...

A small domain located in Tenareze, Domaine Séailles has been a pioneer in the region for organic viticulture and has been certified as such since 2002. Their estate consists of just 25 hectares, mostly dedicated to the production of wine. On the Armagnanc side of things, just 2.5 hectares are dedicated to a small yearly production of Ugni Blanc specifically for distillation. Grown on the clay limestone soils characteristic of Tenareze, the wine from these vineyards is distilled every January on an old, wood-fired continuous still. The spirit is aged in ...

Since 2002 Domaine Séailles is officially certified as organic in all of their wine and Armagnac production. They've foresworn chemicals pesticides and artificial fertilizers and instead opt for a biodynamic approach. While the brandies that have been made this way are still quite young by many Armagnac standards, they are lively, bright, and delicious in their own right (not to mention showing tremendous aging potential). If you're looking for a punchy young Armagnac with crystal-clear fruit and excellent pedigree, combined with a stewardship of the env...
