Domaine Pacory 16 Year Old "K&L Exclusive" Domfrontais Calvados (750ml)
Top Pick!
This will be one of the most crowd pleasing spirits we've ever brought in from France: this 16 year single barrel exclusive of 70% pear and 30% apple distilled Calvados from the small producer Domaine Pacory. In the Domfrontais region of Normandy, the brandies are generally at least 60% pear. Located on the ferme des Grimaux, the Pacory property has been in the family since 1939, but it wasn't until 1959 that Claude Pacory decided to try to perfect the art of Calvados distillation. The torch was passed to Frédéric in 1986 and he's been carrying the tradi...

Domaine Hubert "K&L Exclusive" Pays d'Auge Vieux Calvados (750ml)
Top Pick!
Astrid Hubert has taken over her family's apple distillation business with a desire to bring Calvados into the modern generation. She wants to make her estate's brandy more fruit-forward and more feminine in style -- "After all, I am a woman!" she told us during our visit in 2013. There has never been an apple brandy this good on the American market at such an affordable price. The juicy apple flavor simply bursts on the first sip, the fruit taking front and center stage as the cider-like acidity helps balance out the richness of the wood. Try making a J...

Another in precedent value from the exceptional producer in Mantilly, this time aged over thirty years in ancient casks before being bottled exclusively for K&L. The barrel in question was distilled from 70% pears and 30% apple in 1984 and rested in the gorgeous farmhouse cellars at the Pacory's small estate in the Domfrontais. This region is renowned for it's old pear trees, but the far-flung area is also famous for being one of the last areas to accept AOC control over their spirits. The local reputation for illicit distillation and tax-avoidance, is m...

At the Ferme Des Grimaux near Mantilly, the Family Pacory has farmed the land since 1939. It wasn't until 1959 that Claude Pacory decided to focus his efforts on perfecting the production of Calvados. Like all the farmers in this area, they'd specialized in the production of apples and pears and the creation of ciders and brandy from their juices, but this focus on brandy was exceptional in this part of Normandy. The results were exceptional. Claude and his 100 hectares were exceptional by all accounts. On their 100 hectare property 700 pear trees and 40...

As you go up Camut's range of Calvados you start to see how the immense care they take in the cellar translates to what's in the bottles. The 6-year is fresh, forward, and fruity. The 12-year starts to bring the darker riper apple flavors into the mix. The 18-year begins the transition toward the savory and nutty character that is often exhibited in old Calvados. While the whole line is exceptional, the subtle differences between the expressions are a connoisseur's dream, the Réserve de Semainville is honestly in a totally different league. It states "a...

95 points Vinous: "Pinning down the term hors d’age is a moving target, but this bottling by Michel Huard stands at the older end, with a minimum of 10-year-old spirits, along with a significant percentage that is more than 25 years old. Golden-colored, it opens with a gorgeous, old-time nose - rustic in the best sense of the word. There’s woodiness here, from the nose to the finish, but it’s an attractive virtue, with deep and well-integrated. There’s balanced aromas and flavors of tarte tatin, with notes of pepper and even salted licorice. In the mouth...

93 points Vinous: "This 12-year-old bottling from Adrien Camut is thrilling for its age. Light amber in color, the warm, friendly aromas of wildflowers and honey swirl in contrast to the bracing spice in the mouth. On the midpalate, you encounter serious apple-peel flavor, smoky grilled apple, and complex, dry tannins, that continue through the long finish. (JW)" (11/2018) K&L Notes: We knew that Camut is considered the top producer in Calvados – the crème de la crème of apple spirits. The Camut 12 year, however, blows everything else out of the water;...

Lemorton Calvados comes from the southern appellation of Domfrontais. In this appellation at least 30% of the cider in the Calvados must be made from pears. This 6-year-old is elegant and beautiful, with more than 60% of the blend coming from pear. The apple, however, is what shines through and the Lemorton succeeds, more than any other Calvados we offer, in showcasing the bright acidity of the fruit along with soft touches of baking spice. Fantastic Calvados.

The spirit opens with baked apple aromas and then transitions into ripe red apples with some nutty notes from the extensive barrel aging. The Camut line of Calvados always show better with age, as the double distillation, while making them more neutral in their youth, frees the spirit from impurities that show with age. The palate is soft, rich, and oozing with baking spice, intense earth, and cooked pomme fruit. It is the top of the line for 15+ year old Calvados.

Calvados distilled by Didier Lemorton at La Baillée Fétu in Mantilly, in the Domfrontais Region of Normandy. Distilled from pears (up to 80%) and apples. Single distillation occurs on a traveling, wood-fired column still. The spirit in the "Selection" is aged 3-5 years. Aromas of sage, stewed apple and pear, and brioche transition to a drying palate of tobacco and cinnamon. A hint of crème caramels whispers on the finish. Perfect for Calvados cocktailing. Voted #12 on VinePair’s "50 Best Spirits of 2021" 43% ABV

92 points Vinous: "An average of seven years old, Manoir de Montreuil Réserve includes some brandies up to 20 years old in the blend. Light golden in color, the nose is full of baking spices, which carries through the palate, along with honey, vanilla, and apple strudel. The overall flavor is subtle, with a note of chalky minerality on the finish. Like the Sélection, this is very drinkable, but the younger expression has a bit more liveliness and verve. Still a good value. (JW)" (11/2018) K&L Notes: The Giard family has been producing Calvados in the P...

92 points Vinous: "This easy-going, six-year-old from Adrien Camut is so mellow that the drinking experience might seem akin to a reggae beat. Honeyed-gold in color, there’s an affable, round, expressive nose of fresh apple and toffee, and in the mouth it’s rich and mouthcoating, with notes of coffee and chocolate that are balanced by freshness on the midpalate that glides into a lengthy finish. This Calvados is in no hurry. (JW)" (11/2018) K&L Notes: Camut's 6 year old is simply astounding. Camut has always been the benchmark for Calvados, and this ne...
